Gerard Butler's Nick "Big Nick" O'Brien has one of the best entrances in film history in "Den of Thieves." Upon rolling up to the aftermath of a deadly shoot-out at a local breakfast joint, the profoundly ethically-questionable Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Detective then proceeds to casually pick up and much down on a frosted donut from a blood-splattered box on the ground.

Big Nick is a lot like the movie around him. Written and directed by Christian Gudegast, 2018's "Den of Thieves" is a sleazy, booze-soaked tale of badly-behaved cops and charismatic robbers that's both extremely derivative (it's "Heat" with a hangover) and so aggressively heterosexual (between all the machismo and gun fetishizing on display) it comes off as homoerotic, but that's also part of the charm. It was an unexpected hit to boot, pulling in more than $80 million at the box office on a $30 million budget in theaters.

There's no denying that Den of Thieves has become a phenomenon. Seven years after the original film, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera arrived to further the story of "Big Nick" O'Brien and Donnie Wilson, which was an accomplishment unto itself. But then audiences responded to the long-awaited sequel with impressive box office receipts, and Lionsgate ordered a third movie. And now Den of Thieves 2 is still sitting in the Netflix Top 10.

In an interview with Cbr, stars Gerard Butler and O'Shea Jackson Jr. gave their reaction to Den of Thieves becoming a universe. They also discussed revisiting their characters after several years away. What were the challenges they faced in rediscovering Big Nick and Donnie for the second time, especially since there's not such an extended gap between the two movies in-universe?

Den of Thieves 2: Pantera debuted on Netflix with so much anticipation and excitement that it’s easy to forget that the film began its life as a theatrical release. Indeed, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera only had an 18-day theatrical release window before the sequel was released on VOD. Just as the theatrical and VOD releases of Pantera triggered a resurgence in popularity for the first Den of Thieves film, the sequel’s expected streaming popularity and strong VOD performance led to the announcement of Den of Thieves 3.

Such calculations have defined the recent career of Den of Thieves series star Gerard Butler, whose decidedly formulaic and uninspired starring action vehicles have been primarily geared toward streaming audiences. Gerard Butler knows what he is doing when it comes to delivering solid action movies, and anyone in doubt about this just needs to look at his Den of Thieves franchise. While the original Den of Thieves is still topping the Freevee chart, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera has debuted at the top of the Netflix chart after its successful box office run at the beginning of the year.

Den of Thieves: Pantera arrived seven years after the first movie, but the absence did make the heart grow fonder for Butler’s Big Nick. As well as impressing at the box office, the film managed to improve its critical review score to 63% (up from 41% given to its predecessor), and continued to please audiences who were waiting patiently for the franchise to return. The synopsis of Den of Thieves 2 reads:

Plane, the 2023 action thriller movie starring Gerard Butler (Den of Thieves) and Mike Colter (Evil) is getting a physical media release. Per Geek Vibes Nation, Lionsgate Home Entertainment is set to package Plane in a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Steelbook that will be available exclusively at Amazon.

The Steelbook is available for pre-order on Amazon for $34.99. Plane stars Butler as pilot Brodie Torrance, who saves his passengers from a lightning strike, landing on a war-torn island. Though his work is wide-ranging, a huge part of Gerard Butler's career has revolved around action films. After appearing in a period piece for his debut film, he played a supporting role in the James Bond movie Tomorrow Never Dies in 1997. Since then, he has been in multiple other action movies, including Olympus Has Fallen and Kandahar. Some of his action films have fallen into the climate survival subgenre, including both Greenland and Geostorm, the former of which has a sequel, Greenland: Migration, scheduled for this year.

Millennium’s new take on comic book character Red Sonja has gone through a few different iterations over the years, but the reboot is finally much closer to release. After a two-year post-production period, Red Sonja is finally gearing up for a UK release.

Signature Entertainment has picked up UK and Irish rights to the action fantasy with plans to release this year. Deadline notes that the film previously sold in international markets, though no updates on international release plans as of yet.

Matilda Lutz stars as “barbarian huntress Red Sonja, who must unite a group of unlikely warriors to face off against the evil tyrant Emperor Draygan and his deadly bride, Dark Annisia.”

Exclusive: Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey for Universal Pictures is growing by three more as Nick Tarabay, Jimmy Gonzales and Maurice Compte have joined the cast in unspecified roles, sources tell Deadline.

Jason Statham has begun filming his next action movie. The untitled action-thriller has also unveiled its full cast, which includes two Star Wars alums and the actor behind one of the best Pirates of the Caribbean villains.

According to Deadline, Black Bear has commenced production on Statham's next action movie in the UK and Ireland with Ric Roman Waugh in the director's chair. Waugh is perhaps best known for directing a trio of action movies starring Gerard Butler — Angel Has Fallen (2019), Greenland (2020), and Kandahar (2023). He also recently wrapped filming on the sequel, Greenland: Migration, which is expected to be released in 2025. Baltasar Kormakur was previously attached to direct but had to exit for undisclosed reasons.
