Descriptions of the Apple TV+ series “Dope Thief” as a “drug ring drama” are not exactly accurate. Yes, it revolves around small-time crooks and friends Ray and Manny posing as DEA agents to rob equally small-time drug dealers. But it’s Manny and Ray’s relationship that matters most, especially when a simple job turns deadly, and an anonymous drug kingpin determined to recoup his loss puts a bounty on their heads. Becoming targets for the DEA doesn’t help either.

Exclusive: C. Thomas Howell (Seal Team) and Michelle Hurd (Star Trek: Picard) have signed on to star alongside Trevor Donovan and Ashley Elaine in Where the Wind Blows, a romantic Western based on the USA Today bestselling novel by Caroline Fyffe.

Shooting this summer in Montana, the film follows Chase (Donovan), a rugged cowboy and solitary drifter who closed off his heart long ago — until the day he impulsively does a kindness for a beautiful young woman (Elaine), and everything changes in three days.

John Schimke will direct from his script written with Fyffe and Mike Maden. Producers are Schimke, Ashley Elaine and Don Paul with Ae Productions, Inc., and Brandon Smith and Eden Matson at Nova Vento Entertainment. Ricki Maslar, CSA is handling casting.

In the new BET+ original film “Kemba,’ a sheltered college student falls in love with a man, only to learn that he is not who she believes him to be. Instead of the loving man that she imagines, he is actually a drug kingpin. After being abused and manipulated, she finds herself at the center of the war on drugs. Exclusive: Gersh has signed Kelley Kali, the filmmaker best known for co-writing, co-directing, producing and starring in the 2021 dramedy I’m Fine (Thanks for Asking), which garnered her SXSW’s inaugural Special Jury Recognition for Multi-Hyphenate Storyteller upon its world premiere at the Austin, TX festival.

Currently streaming on BET+, BET Her and Showtime, I’m Fine tells the story of Danny (Kali), a recently widowed hairdresser who finds herself living on the streets with her eight-year-old daughter Wes (Wesley Moss). As Danny works to secure the funds that will allow her to lock down an apartment, she also aims to protect her child from the reality of their situation. The film was released theatrically in the UK and Ireland, also selling to HBO Europe.

Exclusive: Sony has added Michelle Hurd (Star Trek: Picard), Bryan Brown (Australia), Darren Barnet (Gran Turismo) and Hadley Robinson (Moxie) to the cast of their as-yet-untitled rom-com from director Will Gluck (Easy A). Sydney Sweeney and Glenn Powell will lead the ensemble, as previously announced, with Alexandra Shipp also featuring.

Details as to the plot of the R-rated comedy are under wraps. But it’s based on a script by Ilana Wolpert that Gluck is re-writing. Nesta Cooper will lead the cast of the film directed by Kelley Kali, which is currently shooting in Atlanta, as previously announced.

The upcoming film follows Kemba (Cooper) as a young college student who falls in love with a man, only to learn he is a drug kingpin who leads her down a path of abuse and manipulation, placing her in the middle of the government’s “war on drugs,” and ultimately landing her in federal prison. While Hurd and Thomas will play Kemba’s loving parents Odessa and Gus, details as to Saunderson and Carryl’s roles haven’t been disclosed.
