Steven Soderbergh remains one of Hollywood’s most compelling storytellers, a filmmaker whose mastery of genre fluidity continues to captivate audiences. As Jordan Peele once observed, the only difference between comedy and horror lies in the score—and here, Soderbergh manipulates that truth with razor-sharp precision. To say more would spoil the experience, but I’ll leave you with this: the same mind that crafts comedies also delivers the most unnerving horrors.
The Presence (2025) unravels the idea of an unseen force, one that shapes itself to fulfill the emotional needs of those within the house. Initially perceived as a supernatural entity, this Presence subtly intervenes to shield Chloe from danger, gradually exposing the fractures within her family. As the mystery deepens, the revelation of Tyler as the Presence flips assumptions on their head, raising a provocative question—does the house’s spirit evolve based on who is most emotionally trapped?...

Director Steven Soderbergh released his annual "Seen, Read" list of all the movies, TV shows, plays, books, and more he consumed in 2024. The famous helmer of Sex, Lies, and Videotape and Ocean's Eleven consumed a massive amount of content. But you'd be surprised to learn that the man who was once nominated for two movies for Best Director in one year watched the prequest Star Wars: The Phantom Menace (twice), Attack of the Clones, and Revenge of the Sith.
Soderbergh is known to be one of the busiest directors / producers / cinematographers in Hollywood, oftentimes directing and releasing multiple films per year. As an example, in 2023 alone, he directed Magic Mike's Last Dance and multiple episodes of TV shows, Command Z and Full Circle. Yet he also finds the time to watch and read dozens of films, shows, and books.

Founding Lush guitarist Emma Anderson has announced her debut solo album, Pearlies. The project arrives October 20th via Sonic Cathedral, while lead single “Bend the Round” is out now.
Anderson began writing what would become Pearlies back around 2016, when Lush was briefly reunited. In fact, the songs were intended for the shoegaze pioneers. “I thought we were in it for the long term, so some of these songs — or even just parts of them — were actually going to be for Lush,” Anderson explained in a statement. “That didn’t happen, so I had these songs and bits of music that I didn’t know what to do with.”
It took a lot of convincing for the songwriter to make a solo record, and especially to sing lead vocals. After Anderson’s frequent collaborator, Cocteau Twins’ Robin Guthrie, declined to contribute unless she agreed to make the jump, however, Pearlies began in earnest.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker trailer is now available and Star Wars fans are trying to figure out just how Emperor Palpatine is back. The maniacal cackle is featured at the very end of the trailer and it shocked fans from all over the world, who were then treated to actor Ian McDiarmid at Star Wars Celebration demanding the trailer roll again. It seems impossible. Darth Vader killed him in Return of the Jedi to save Luke Skywalker's life, so how could he be back all of these years later?
The return of Palpatine has been talked about a lot over the years by hardcore Star Wars fans. As it turns out, Rebels Season 4 many have given us a clue as to how the villain could return. The World Between Worlds in the hidden Jedi Temple on Lothal was something Palpatine sought to manipulate as he could travel through time by using the Force.

Black and Blue FIlms Managing Director Jonathan Sothcott is a busy man, besides producing eight films over the past two years he’s now capitalising on the success of his own independent productions – films such as the forthcoming Elfie Hopkins and Strippers vs. Werewolves – and has teamed up with distributor 4Digital Media to bring independent international genre films to the UK home entertainment market through his all-new “Jonathan Sothcott Presents” imprint.
Kicking off in Spring 2012, the imprint will see the release of films we here at Blogomatic3000 deem our bread and butter – low budget, full of ideas, sometimes cheesy horror. And the first two films announced sound right up my street!
First up is Two Headed Shark Attack (awesome title Fyi) starring Carmen Electra and the daughter of the Hulster himself, Brooke Hogan. Sothcott notes
I love shark movies, Jaws is my favourite film, and I see every one that comes out.

Tom Provost.s feature film debut The Presence starts with a tranquil scene of a boat traveling up river. The imagery is relaxing and beautiful but it.s accompanied by Conrad Pope.s original score which is anything but. There.s a sense of dread as the song plays on and Mira Sorvino.s character, whose name is never revealed, arrives on a remote island. The house she.s headed to hasn.t been modernized: there.s no fridge, no lights, no faucet and no bathroom. The woman arrives by herself but she.s not alone and it.s not quite clear who the film.s title refers to because there.s also more than one ghostly entity.

Sometimes when I'm walking through Blockbuster, I will see the covers of direct-to-dvd movies, and I will admit that I tend to judge them right there. I will look at its poorly photo-shopped cover and laugh at the suckers who will rent this dud. Well, when it comes to The Presence, it turns out I am the sucker. Will The Presence win any Oscars? Not at all. It isn't a perfect film, particularly in regard to pacing, but for those who enjoy unconventional ghost stories, The Presence will be a pleasant surprise.
In The Presence, an unnamed woman (Mira Sorvino) is staying at her family's cabin on an island. She works, listens to old jazz records, and stays inside her head a little too much. There is a man in a white shirt (Shane West) who might be the ghost of a drowned convict, and he watches the woman silently,...

Described on Horrornews.net as “The most innovative ghost story I’ve ever seen”, director Tom Provost’ “The Presence” is just that and more. It combines elements of drama, suspense, romance & a few “Bumps in the night” into a smartly told tale of a woman (Mira Sorvino) who retreats to an old cabin her grandmother owned to do some work. Unfortunately for her there is an apparition (Shane West) who is inhabiting the cabin when she arrives there. In addition, her boyfriend arrives unexpectedly to spend some time with her which leads to the apparition growing obsessive with her. I got… More...

Lionsgate is distributing Tom Provost's The Presence on DVD today and appropriately, here is a review on this, sometimes romantic, thriller. The Presence stars Mira Sovino as "The Woman." She vacations to a nearby cabin to deal with some emotional pain. Here, there is only more suffering with a duo of ghosts tormenting her at various points in the film. "The Man" is played by Justin Kirk in a somewhat awkward style. Other film messages might also seem awkward. The film is really centered on some elements of Christian mythos including temptation to sin, the Devil and reaching a higher power through good deeds. According to IMDb, Mira Sorvino has been quite busy lately. Although, to be honest, we sort of tuned out around the time she costarred with Val Kilmer’s blind masseuse in 1999′s At First Sight. So we were pleased to see the trailer for her creepy new haunted-cabin flick, The Presence. The fact that it was produced by The Blair Witch Project’s Daniel Myrick only heightened our interest.
What can we tell from the trailer to this straight-to-dvd supernatural thriller? Well, first off, that Ms. Sorvino (sorry, Academy Award-winner Ms. Sorvino) appears to have inherited a secluded cabin in the woods from her grandfather,...

Looking to escape the pressures of everyday life, a woman (Sorvino) travels to a secluded cabin in the woods. She’s not alone, though, because an apparition (Shane West, A Walk to Remember) inhabits the cabin and begins to stalk her.
But when the woman’s boyfriend (Justin Kirk, TV’s Weeds) arrives, the spirit in the house grows darker and more obsessive. The woman soon begins to exhibit bizarre and irrational behavior, and her boyfriend fears she’s been possessed by the ghost who’s in love with her.
Written and directed by Tom Provost (Under Suspicion) and executive produced by The Blair Witch Project co-creator Daniel Myrick, The Presence is premiering on DVD.

Atmosphere takes hold in director Tom Provost’s debut supernatural thriller, following a woman (Mira Sorvino) visiting a cabin in the woods as an apparition stalks about. Where the film really makes its mark is how it turns genre staples on their head, but getting there may leave some underwhelmed. The film builds to an exciting climax that will leave many talking due to the interesting notions it puts forth or the confusing way it is expressed—but they will be talking. Hit the jump for my full review. A beautiful cabin sits on an island that has a mysterious presence (Shane West) haunting it. Unmoving, we are left to wonder whether the apparition is merely able to observe or if...

We reported on this upcoming horror flick not a few days ago and one of the things which really intrigues me about is that Daniel Myrick (Blair Witch, The Objective) is executive producing the flick. I know what you're saying, Blair Witch?! Seriously, forget that film, The Objective was awesome, so we're going to be watching this, and as such, I found a teaser I had missed in my first round of research. This is obviously some type of sales piece and is no way indicative of the film to come.
"Set in an old cabin isolated deep in the back-rivers of an unknown locale, a man lives a desolate, lonely existence. No electricity. No indoors plumbing. No means of communication. When a woman arrives at the cabin for some time away from a troubled marriage, we discover the man is actually a ghost. As she sets up house in the cabin,...

If you had said the name Daniel Myrick not a month ago, I would have laughed. If his name doesn't ring a bell think Blair Witch, but after watching his latest film (with very low expectations) The Objective I was pleasantly surprised, it was actually a great film! So when I ran across this bit of news last week, that Myrick would be Executive Producing The Presence, which is directed by Tom Provost, and read the outline and synopsis, I though this has some great potential. The Presence has some interesting production ideas: The first third of the film is largely without dialogue and they say that "the unusual use of darkness will create a movie with a very distinctive look". It's basically an old fashioned ghost story with an updated style. "Set in an old cabin isolated deep in the back-rivers of an unknown locale, a man lives a desolate,...
