The new “Holes” TV series has filled in a key role: Jac Schaeffer, creator of the Marvel Studios series “WandaVision” and “Agatha All Along,” will direct the pilot episode for the Disney+ production, Variety has learned exclusively.
Disney Branded Television ordered the show to pilot in January (as first reported by Variety), with Alina Mankin serving as writer and executive producer and Liz Phang serving as showrunner and executive producer. The logline for this adaptation of Louis Sachar’s 1998 book shifts the story to focus on a teenage girl, who “is sent to a detention camp where the ruthless Warden forces the campers to dig holes for a mysterious purpose.”
As well as serving as showrunner and executive producer on “Agatha All Along,” Schaeffer directed Episodes 1, 2, and 7 of the show, the latter of which especially won wide acclaim last fall for its complex, time-hopping structure and performance showcase for costar Patti LuPone.

The world has a way of evening things out. Take this week, for example, with The Penguin debuting as one of the best comic book television adaptations of the century, while Agatha All Along limps along as one of the worst. It’s a cringe-worthy, grating, tedious, and monotonously boring spooky fantasy.
The Disney+ series has been the worst since Secret Invasion and is easily one of the worst Marvel streaming series ever. Agatha All Along lacks basic scares, thrills, laughs, and any semblance of the joy typically found in shows like this. It makes you wonder exactly who this series was created for.
Perhaps those fierce Hocus Pocus loyalists developed over the last few decades? Either way, the first four episodes of Disney+’s Agatha All Along are a calculated misfire on almost every level.

In Netflix sci-fi epic series 3 Body Problem, British actor Alex Sharp stars as Will Downing, a terminally-ill scientist who not only manages profound romantic heartbreak, but ultimately transcends the limits of human existence.
Plucked straight out of Julliard to play the lead character of Christopher Boone in the Marianne Elliott-directed stage production of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Sharpe won a Tony for the role. He went on to star opposite Lily Collins in the film To the Bone, as activist Rennie Davis in The Trial of the Chicago 7 and with Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson in The Hustle, before playing opposite Bill Nighy in Living and with Anthony Hopkins and Helena Bonham Carter in One Life, the 2023 film about British humanitarian Nicholas Winton, who rescued hundreds of Jewish children from occupied Poland.

One of the classic movie tropes of studio comedies, and especially in the 70s and 80s- is the ever-clever “slobs vs snobs” tale. You know, the blue-collar underdog against a preppy, often annoyingly sophisticated social elite. Movies like Revenge of the Nerds, Animal House, Wayne’s World, or Caddyshack make this the crux of their stories and often use multiple characters in each category to drive the shenanigans all the way up. But in some cases, a movie will tell the story with just one slob and one snob- and crank them both to their absolute extremes- and then throw in a heist because… we love that stuff.
In today’s episode of Revisited, we’re going to be talking about 1988’s buddy comedy classic- Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. This movie stars Steve Martin and (the now retired) Michael Caine as two con artists who make an old western-style bet to run each other out of town.

Anne Hathaway credits Christopher Nolan for essentially saving her career amid backlash she received online.
In a new interview, the Idea of You star recalled that after she won an Oscar for Les Miserables and co-hosted the Oscars, she received a lot of vitriol, which affected her career.
“A lot of people wouldn’t give me roles because they were so concerned about how toxic my identity had become online,” Hathaway told Vanity Fair in a recent interview. “I had an angel in Christopher Nolan, who did not care about that and gave me one of the most beautiful roles I’ve had in one of the best films that I’ve been a part of.”

An idyllic getaway goes awry after a freak accident leaving teen Lidia (Zoe Arnao) and her father, Pablo (Hugo Silva) to mourn the loss of the family matriarch (Irene Montalà) by escaping to their isolated lighthouse where the paranormal flirts with their fragile dispositions while a troubled family friend (Sergio Castellanos) stirs the pot on the periphery.

“Trolls Band Together,” the third chapter in the DreamWorks Animation franchise, gets psychedelic with the introduction of new worlds and characters, helped along by some trippy 2D animation from Titmouse. It’s a musical tribute to ’90s boy bands, fittingly enough, as Justin Timberlake’s Branch reunites with his long-lost brothers (known as the family band BroZone): Floyd (Troye Sivan), John Dory (Eric André), Spruce (Daveed Diggs), and Clay (Kid Cudi).
But Floyd is kidnapped by pop-star siblings Velvet (Amy Schumer) and Veneer (Andrew Rannells) as part of their nefarious musical scheme.
“With Justin and boy bands as part of the DNA of the Troll universe, it felt like a natural extension, and also, musically and visually, it’s more psychedelic,” director Walt Dohrn (“Trolls World Tour”) told IndieWire. “If you can see my room, I live in a kaleidoscopic, Technicolor, psychedelic world. DreamWorks Animation is going through a great period right now. Movies like "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish" and "The Bad Guys" experimented with both tone and visuals and delivered two of the best and most acclaimed animated movies of the past few years. After the disappointing release of "Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken," DreamWorks wanted to end 2023 back on top with the third installment in the "Trolls" series. "Trolls Band Together" brings the trilogy of animated jukebox musicals inspired by the Troll doll toys to a close with a film all about boy bands — including an actual Nsync reunion.

Stop me before I pun again.
It’s a mantra that I dearly wish the creators of the third installment in the hugely successful animated Trolls series had taken to heart. Capitalizing on the fact that one of the film’s main voice stars, Justin Timberlake, was formerly a member of one of the biggest boy bands in pop history, Trolls Band Together is stuffed with so many groan-worthy punning jokes and one-liners referencing such bands from the ‘90s and other eras that you wonder whether the film was made for its target tyke audience or their parents. Many of the latter will at least enjoy the pop culture nostalgia while enduring the perfunctory storyline.
You have to admire Timberlake for being willing to make fun of his showbiz past. The plot involves the revelation that his character, Branch, was once the baby (literally) member of BroZone, a mega-successful boy band featuring his four brothers,...

It came out of my scholarship program at the non-profit Australian Theatre for Young People, a program that I’m very proud of and has had incredible success. If there was ever a movie I was going to direct, it would be this one,” said the actress. “This project is just so special and original.

Actress Rebel Wilson is set to make her directorial debut with an adaptation of the Australian musical of “The Deb” for Unigram, AI Film and Access Entertainment.
“The Deb,” according to the official synopsis, tells the story of “lovable farm-girl and high school outcast Taylah Simpkins, who is certain the upcoming Debutante Ball, ‘the Deb,’ is her one chance to redefine herself. When her cynical city cousin Maeve is exiled to Taylah’s drought-stricken town Dunburn, she thinks the ball is a ‘heteronormative shit-show’ and immediately disrupts the status quo. In their search for the spotlight, Taylah and Maeve dig deep to find self-acceptance — and a date to the Deb.”
The musical originally premiered at Sydney’s Australian Theatre for Young People (Atyp) in 2022, written by Hannah Reilly. It includes original songs from singer-songwriter Meg Washington.

The ongoing Hollywood writers’ strike casts a cloud over what otherwise promises to be a solid Cannes film market. Most buyers and sellers came out of Berlin this year “cautiously optimistic” as the (partial) resurgence of the theatrical market alongside a slowly but steadily growing digital ancillary business offers reason to believe reports of the death of the indie industry — widespread in the wake of the Covid theater shutdowns — have been greatly exaggerated.
“I see the investment by Amazon and Apple TV in the theatrical business as a real positive,” says David Garrett of Mister Smith Entertainment, “because it shows they recognize the real value of the theatrical experience.” Amazon’s success with Ben Affleck’s sports-marketing biopic Air, which grossed upwards of $80 million worldwide in theaters before going out online, bodes well for the upcoming rollout of Apple’s Cannes title Killers of the Flower Moon from Martin Scorsese,...

Exclusive: Pitch Perfect and The Hustle star Rebel Wilson is set to star in action-comedy film Bride Hard from director Simon West (Expendables 2) for a Cannes market launch.
The film follows “badass secret agent Sam (Wilson) who has been tasked with one of her hardest missions yet – being a Maid of Honor for her childhood best friend”.
Screenplay was written by Shaina Steinberg from a story by Steinberg and CeCe Pleasants. WME Independent will handle worldwide sales.
Balcony 9 Productions will be producing and financing. Producers include Joel David Moore and Max Osswald (Some Other Woman), Cassian Elwes (Mudbound), and Colleen Camp (Knock Knock).
“Bride Hard combines action, adventure and comedy. These are genres I love to mix together. I’ve done it in the past with films like Expendables 2 or even going back to Con-Air and Tomb Raider,” said West. “I think audiences will love this. It operates on so many levels.

Boy bands are powerful. They've stood the test of time, staying endlessly relevant and fascinating, and have dominated pop culture discourse no matter the decade. Whether it be The Beatles or One Direction, we've at least once dreamed of following a boy band we've been obsessed with while they're on tour. And now, eOne is making a movie about it.
Titled "Rock The Boat," the female-driven boy band comedy stars queen of comedy Rebel Wilson, Leslie Mann, and James Van Der Beek. Here's everything we know about it.
Everything We Know About The Story Of Rock The Boat
As per Deadline, the film is being described as a "female-driven comedy" that borrows inspiration from the real-life phenomena generated by boy bands such as "Backstreet Boys" and "New Kids on the Block" during their reunion tours aboard luxury cruise ships. Because who doesn't want to be a part of that?

Horror delights, rom-coms and a new sci-fi series starring Christoph Waltz are just a few of the highlights arriving on Amazon Prime Video in February. This month sees the debut of the second and final season of “Carnival Row” on Feb. 17, while Feb. 24 is when “The Consultant” – a “Severance”-like thriller series starring Waltz and directed by “WandaVision’s” Matt Shakman – drops.
In terms of new original Prime Video movies, on Feb. 10 there’s “Somebody I Used to Know,” a romantic comedy starring Alison Brie who co-wrote the script with her husband Dave Franco (who serves as director).
And you’ll find last year’s buzzy horror hit “Smile” on the streaming service on Feb. 21, while “Mad Max: Fury Road” filmmaker George Miller’s “Three Thousand Years of Longing” arrives on Feb. 17.
That’s not to mention noteworthy library additions like “A.I.,” “The Talented Mr. Ripley” and “Almost Famous.

February is the shortest month of the year but Prime Video is paying that no mind with its jam-packed list of new releases for February 2023.
This really is an uncommonly stuffed month on the Amazon streamer and it all starts with a handful of Amazon Originals. Amazon’s original offerings kick off with the release of Dave Franco-directed romcom Somebody I Used to Know on Feb. 10. That is followed by Carnival Row season 2 – a gritty fantasy crime drama is set in a world of steampunky fairies. The show stars Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevigne and this batch of episodes will be its swan song. Meanwhile The Consultant on Feb. 24 is a dark comedy workplace thriller starring Christoph Waltz.
The biggest hits this month, however, might just be some recent cinema faves. If February is for lovers, Amazon didn’t get the memo as there are quite a few horror movies of note here.

Netflix doesn’t publicise the titles it will remove – and users will only be alerted to something’s imminent removal if they happen to select the title in question.

Rebel Wilson is getting ready to serve as the star of “Double Fault,” a tennis comedy in development at Paramount Players.
Jim and Brian Kehoe, the brothers who wrote the 2019 high school comedy “Blockers,” are in talks to pen the screenplay. The logline is being kept under wraps.
“Double Fault” will be produced by Wilson and Todd Garner (“Senior Year”), with Brad Jenkel (“The Matador”) on board as executive producer.
Wilson recently starred in Netflix’s teen comedy “Senior Year,” in which she played a 37-year-old who wakes up from a coma and returns to high school to get her diploma.
In Variety’s review of “Senior Year,” Dennis Harvey praised Wilson as “a naturally gifted comedian” who pulls together the movie “through sheer force of personality and riffing performance chops.”
Prior to “Senior Year,” Wilson hadn’t starred in a movie since 2019’s “Isn’t It Romantic,” a romantic comedy that parodies stereotypical Hollywood meet-cutes.

“Monty Python” legend John Cleese has defended J.K. Rowling amid transphobic tweets, slammed the new “woke rules” for laughs, and now is calling out film studios for producing uncreative comedies.
During the FreedomFest conference in Las Vegas (via New York Post), Cleese told Fox News Digital that comedians do not have the freedom to be funny in 2022.
“There’s always been limitations on what they’re allowed to say,” Cleese said. “I think it’s particularly worrying at the moment because you can only create in an atmosphere of freedom, where you’re not checking everything you say critically before you move on. What you have to be able to do is to build without knowing where you’re going because you’ve never been there before. That’s what creativity is — you have to be allowed to build. And a lot of comedians now are sitting there and when they think of something,...

Gem-clad Anne Hathaway and Zendaya wistfully dancing together? Sounds like the definition of “Euphoria.”
Oscar-winner Hathaway stars opposite Zendaya in a Bulgari jewelry ad directed by Paolo Sorrentino (“The Great Beauty”). Titled “Unexpected Wonders,” the two-and-a-half-minute short film is set in Rome and inherently calls back to Hathaway’s diamond-heavy roles in “Ocean’s 8” and “The Hustle,” with a dash of a sensual love affair.
“Accept Rome’s heartwarming invitation and search for joy and wonder in every moment, gleaming beauty in the most surprising places — knowing that staying curious opens us up to an infinity of blissful opportunities,” Bulgari captioned the video release. “Discover #UnexpectedWonders, #Bulgari’s new Brand movie. #Rome.”
Hathaway purrs in the film, “In the search for wonder…,” while Zendaya adds, “…there are no endings.” Elegant jewels are strewn about an estate as Hathaway gazes lustfully at rare gemstones and Zendaya herself. The two actresses seem...
