There's a sub-genre of anime for just about any interest a viewer might have, and while there aren't as many anime centered around acting as other sub-genres, there are still great and thought-provoking choices out there. Some are series that offer anywhere from one to several dozen episodes, while others are movies that leave an impact on audiences and get their message across within two hours.
Some acting-focused anime are more lighthearted and focus on romantic or comedic elements, like Skip Beat! and Kodocha, while others like Perfect Blue and Oshi No Ko aren't afraid to take their audiences to darker places. Whatever individual tastes viewers have, there's at least one acting anime out there to suit their needs.

The anime industry is changing and growing every single day while still relying on the strong roots that established this beloved medium. As time goes on, improving ideas are proposed to keep fans fascinated. There are plenty of anime that weren't given the proper attention that they deserved during their release around 20 years ago. Whether it be a conflict of interest, lack of budget, or creative liberties, some series weren't developed to the best of their abilities.
An example of an anime that steered far from the path of its source material is the original 2001 adaptation of Fruits Basket by Natsuki Takaya. The series began its development before Takaya had completed the manga, leaving the anime team to make choices that Takaya disapproves of to this day. However, a faithful reboot proved that with a little time, criticism, and understanding, there's a possibility to create an even better version of...

Not every anime show can achieve the mainstream success of the most popular anime like My Hero Academia or Attack on Titan, even if some shows deserve it, which means that there are a lot of underrated anime gems waiting for fans to discover and enjoy them. There seems to be an almost constant stream of highly-acclaimed anime series these days—more than anyone interested in the art form will have enough time to consume, in fact. This inevitably causes some underrated series to slip through the cracks.
Naturally, no list of underrated anime could cover every single anime that gets overlooked. But at least this list can highlight 20 obscure anime of particular note and hopefully help them get more recognition.

Shojo is a unique demographic within anime that centers around romance, emotion, and a typically female perspective. Though it's a much smaller category and often doesn't see the same popularity as shonen, it's nonetheless introduced many anime fans to some of the most iconic stories and characters of all time. Throughout the years, many shojo protagonists have stolen audiences' hearts with their kindness and inner strength.
