What do you think of when The Black List is mentioned? In the scope of television and movies, the first feature that comes to mind is probably James Spader’s long-running NBC series from 2013. To documentarians and the like, it’s probably The Black List film interview series that aired on HBO years ago. Unbeknownst to many, that same term is connected to something extremely important in Hollywood as well. Originating over 20 years ago and conceived by then-development executive Franklin Leonard, this version of The Black List is a survey (curated by over 500 studio and production company executives) that showcases the “most-liked” but not-yet-produced screenplays.
In the past, this list has had some prominent movies pop up on it, including 2022’s The Menu (which made the list in 2019) and 2024’s Challengers, as well as Lift (released the same year and making an appearance on the list in 2021). As much as...

Damien Chazelle's "La La Land" is a bittersweet tale of a romance that almost was. The story of Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) and Mia (Emma Stone) is of a love that is very much requited and yet, due to circumstances, simply cannot be. That theme of a near-miss is very much the real-life story of the movie as well as its fictional narrative in a number of ways. For one, the film infamously nearly won Best Picture at the Academy Awards. Although this was less an instance of a near-miss and more just a genuine mistake, there was a good minute there where the filmmakers thought it actually happened.
That's not the only near-miss that "La La Land" experienced during its journey from inception, to cinemas, to awards season. When the film was first being developed, Chazelle had two completely different actors in mind for the leading roles: Miles Teller and Emma Watson.

Movie stardom is incredibly difficult to achieve, and even more difficult to maintain. Once an actor finds that breakthrough role, they're immediately faced with the challenge of giving their fans what they want while also, depending on their level of ambition, taking on roles that will hopefully expand their range (or at the very least keep them from getting stuck in a creative rut). Some actors correctly identify that their audience isn't looking for much in the way of variance (John Wayne is a perfect example of this), while others are determined to throw a curveball here and there (as Sylvester Stallone's unwisely did with poorly received comedies like "Rhinestone" and "Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot"). Mess with expectations too much, and the fans will stop trusting you to deliver.
Wayne and Stallone at least had a go-to mode of movie they could return to as needed to satisfy their audiences.

If it can be said, and Anthony Mackie has said it, the new Captain America has "made a lot of dudes famous." At least that's the claim he's sticking with in a new video titled "Anthony Mackie's Memories."
One of the fellas he claims to have given the good ol' Mackie Bump to in the Entertainment Weekly video? Ryan Gosling. As in, Mickey Mouse Club's Ryan Gosling. Are You Afraid of the Dark? star Ryan Gosling. Young Hercules star Ryan Gosling. The Notebook's Ryan Gosling.
Why Does Anthony Mackie Say He Made Ryan Gosling Famous?
In the charming and funny 14-minute clip filled with truly fascinating anecdotes, the actor goes through almost his entire filmography to share silly, one-of-a-kind stories from his time working on various sets, and reflects on the career he's made for himself while also making other dudes famous.

Typically, when a movie includes a cast of well-established actors and celebrities, the odds of it getting turned into a critical and commercial success should be high. However, over the years, there have been many instances when those incredible casts get severely misused. 2024 has been no exception, as the release of Borderlands became one of the latest victims of this issue.
Despite having Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Jamie Lee Curtis in the ensemble, the movie performed poorly among critics and audiences. Aside from Black's standout voice work, the actors felt miscast, resulting in phoned-in performances. Other examples from 2024 include Netflix originals like Atlas and A Family Affair, where famous actors have weak and clichd material to work with. Many movies have failed to use their stacked casts properly, yet these examples stung the most to viewers.

Emma Stone didnt take any breaks after her second Oscar, and her follow-up project, Kinds of Kindness, is now streaming and she plays three different characters in it. Emma Stones acting career began on TV in the early 2000s, and she made her big screen debut in the 2007 comedy Superbad. Stone built a career in comedy with movies like The House Bunny and Zombieland, and her big break arrived in 2010 with the comedy Easy A. Stone continued playing comedic roles after that, and her first drama role arrived in 2011 with The Help.

While reflecting on his time working with DC, screenwriter Will Beall cites Back to the Future II as an inspiration for an early Justice League script.
In an interview with The Wrap, Beall talked about his experiences working on DC films. Baell has worked on other films such as Gangster Squad, Bad Boys: Ride or Die, and Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. Concerning his work with DC, Baell wrote for Aquaman and described the experience as a positive one. When discussing his work on Zack Snyders Justice League, Beall said, I did a very early draft of Justice League. Some of it found its way into the Snyder cut. I was delighted that I could help.

Will Beall's original Justice League script was inspired by Back to the Future Part II, featuring a post-apocalyptic future team-up. Beall's script was later replaced by David S. Goyer and Zack Snyder's three-film plan, with Beall receiving a "story by" credit in Zack Snyder's Justice League. Beall has contributed to other successful DC projects, such as Aquaman and Bad Boys: Ride or Die, showcasing his continued influence in the DC Universe.
Justice League's original screenwriter Will Beall has finally talked about his original concept and revealed the classic movie that inspired it. Beall was brought on by Warner Bros. to pen the script for Justice League in the summer of 2012, hot off his script for Gangster Squad and a year out from the release of Man of Steel. Sean Penn is giving his take on straight actors playing roles of gay men, saying in a recent interview that he would not play Harvey Milk today.
Penn portrayed the openly gay politician in 2008’s Milk and earned his second Oscar for the film.
“I went 15 years miserable on sets,” Penn told The New York Times. “Milk was the last time I had a good time.”
He continued, “It could not happen in a time like this. It’s a time of tremendous overreach. It’s a timid and artless policy toward the human imagination.”
After starring in the film directed by Gus Van Sant and written by Dustin Lance Black, Penn went on to star in films like Fair Game (2010), The Tree of Life (2011), This Must Be the Place (2011), Gangster Squad (2013), The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013), The Gunman (2015), The Professor and the Madman (2019), Licorice Pizza (2021), and many more.

There was a time when writer Will Beall was one of Hollywood's most sought-after writers. However, after the star-studded Gangster Squad failed to meet expectations, that all changed.
Warner Bros. still turned to him for help with expanding its DC Universe, though, and he's credited with working on both Aquaman and...Zack Snyder's Justice League?! The reason Beall got a "Story by" credit on that director's cut is because he was once tasked with writing a vaguely similar Justice League movie which, believe it or not, Ben Affleck was eyed to direct (years being cast as Batman).
The project started taking shape in the early 2010s and was ultimately scrapped when Warner Bros. put all of its eggs in Zack Snyder's basket. In this feature, we take a look at what might have been, delving into everything we know about Beall's plans for this scrapped project.

Stone's advice helped writer Julio Torres create a successful Papyrus sketch for SNL. Exceeding SNL's formula, the sketch stood out with a relatable premise and a funny character. Torres says: I think the humor comes not from making fun of him, but from seeing qualities in him that we can relate to.
According to writer Julio Torres, a piece of advice from Emma Stone helped inspire Ryan Gosling's incredible "Papyrus" sketch on Saturday Night Live. The sketch, which follows Gosling as a man haunted by the "Papyrus" font that's used for the Avatar franchise, was a breakout success for the long-running NBC show. It even inspired a sequel when Gosling hosted SNL earlier this year, with the follow-up expanding on the original and incorporating Avatar: The Way of Water.

Two-time Oscar winner Emma Stone and actor Ryan Gosling have starred together in three films to date and have been lauded for their on-screen chemistry. While they began with the romantic comedy Crazy, Stupid, Love, the pairing worked wonders in the musical romance La La Land, which won Stone her first Oscar for Best Actress.

The 16 Best Ryan Gosling Movies, from ‘The Fall Guy’ and ‘Drive’ to ‘Barbie’ and ‘Blade Runner 2049’
[Editor’s note: this list was originally published in July 2023, and has since been updated.]

Gosling has had a long, fruitful career, but it’s safe to say that he’s never committed to a role as hard as he’s committed to the bit that was the “Barbie” press tour. Every interview and soundbite the Canadian actor gave in the publicity run for Greta Gerwig’s take on the iconic Mattel toy line has launched meme after meme, as he’s spoken about the importance of telling the tragic story of Barbie’s beau Ken. Ryan Gosling stars in The Fall Guy, a new action-thriller based on the 1981 television series of the same name. In the upcoming film, Gosling plays Colt Seavers, a stuntman who finds himself thrown into an epic adventure when the actor he's doubling for goes missing. Seavers goes on the hunt for his missing partner, only to land in the middle of a much larger conspiracy.
Gosling is the perfect person to make a movie that involves the behind-the-scenes antics of the film industry because he's had such a long and prolific career. Despite recent successes, Ryan Gosling's best moments on screen are with Emma Stone in films like La La Land and Crazy, Stupid, Love. The 2024 Oscars served as a reminder of the on-screen magic shared by Gosling and Stone, prompting hopes for a new film collaboration. While a joke tweet sparked rumors of a reunion in Ryan Gosling's upcoming sci-fi movie, it seems unlikely they'll work together soon.

Netflix has named Dan Lin, the producer of “The Lego Movie” and Netflix’s “Avatar: The Last Airbender” live-action adaptation, as the new Chairman of Film to replace Scott Stuber, the company announced Wednesday.
The film industry veteran will begin on April 1 and report to Bela Bajaria, Netflix’s Chief Content Officer. Stuber, who announced his exit last month and that he would step down in March, was with the streamer seven years.

With Poor Things racking up a lot of critical praise over the last three months, it's very clear that Emma Stone may have found the director who she can elevate her craft with, and that is Yorgos Lanthimos. As a whole, Poor Things has acquired 11 nominations going into awards night. It's a visually stunning film that feels ripped from a children's book, although, be advised, it does not have a level of children's content in the movie.
Every great director finds their one partner in crime who feeds off one another creatively. In the stories shared between Lanthimos and Stone during the award-season buzz, you can tell that the magic behind this project did not happen overnight. Emma Stone is great at just about anything. Gosling and Stone's chemistry sizzles onscreen, making them a legendary screen duo in any era of Hollywood history. Crazy, Stupid, Love showcases their comedic timing and brings them together as a comedy dream team. La La Land capitalizes on their onscreen chemistry, earning them Oscar nominations and solidifying the film as a classic of the era.

One cannot understate the impact Martin Brest's crime comedy "Beverly Hills Cop" had on popular culture when it was released in 1984. Between "Cop," the 1983 comedy "Trading Places," and Walter Hill's 1982 buddy film "48 Hrs.," Eddie Murphy was suddenly one of the largest and most striking movie stars in the world. His glib delivery and willingness to be crass rattled cinemas to an astonishing degree, and audiences began flocking to see Murphy in just about anything. Brest's film was made for a mere $13 million and would rack up about $316 million worldwide. It was also nominated for Best Original Screenplay at the Academy Awards.
In the film, Murphy played Axel Foley, a Detroit-based detective who says he's going on vacation to Beverly Hills, but who is secretly investigating the death of a friend, unbeknownst to his bosses. The film involves a lot of Murphy's bafflement at the posh, unusual, upscale...

Cats (2019) had a star-studded cast including James Corden, Judi Dench, and Taylor Swift, but became one of the most unpopular movies in recent memory. Amsterdam (2022) had potential as an Oscar-contending drama with an exceptional cast, but ended up being a lackluster disappointment despite the talent of Christian Bale and Margot Robbie. Suicide Squad (2016) failed to live up to expectations, despite an ensemble cast that included Will Smith and Margot Robbie, and missed the opportunity to be DC's answer to Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy.
A handful of star-studded movies turned out to be total busts that ultimately wasted the cast's potential. Typically, an ensemble piece is a promising glimpse into the quality of any given film or television show's quality as well as an excellent marketing strategy for the content. Ryan Gosling's role as Ken in the new Barbie film is another memorable performance by the esteemed actor. He is a versatile performer with some exceptional roles, though he is largely known for his romantic performances in films like The Notebook and La La Land.
Though these famous Gosling roles are important stepping stones throughout his journey to becoming an A-list actor, there are some underrated performances he should also be recognized for. Some of these roles are from well-known titles, such as The Nice Guys, but Gosling deserves more credit for his performances. Other movies, like The Believer, are not frequently talked about but are hidden gems within his widespread experience as a prominent movie actor.

Throughout her storied career, Emma Stone has starred in a wide variety of movies, from raunchy teen comedies to Oscar-winning dramatic masterpieces. Some of Stone’s movies have been universally praised by critics, like Birdman and The Favourite, while others have been panned as one of the worst, like Marmaduke and Movie 43 – and there are plenty of middling efforts that rank somewhere in between. With challenging roles like a woman in recovery, an aspiring starlet, and a conniving courtier, Stone has earned a cabinet’s worth of awards, including an Academy Award, a BAFTA Award, and a Golden Globe Award.

Normally, whenever Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling team up for a movie, you can’t keep people away from the movie theater – unless that movie is Gangster Squad. For projects like Crazy Stupid Love and La La Land, Stone and Gosling are the kind of classical movie stars audiences have always loved. They’re super funny, easy on the eyes, and they have really good chemistry together. No wonder both films have inspired as many GIFs as a popular CW TV show. However, not everything this duo touches turn into gold. In between Crazy Stupid Love and La La Land, the duo headlined another movie that the whole world has chosen to forget ever exist: Gangster Squad.

Here's every movie collaboration between Megan Fox and Will Arnett ranked. It's not uncommon for actors to bond while making a project, and to work together many times in the years that follow. Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson, for example, have appeared together in 11 movies, including the Zoolander duology and Starsky & Hutch. Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone have also appeared together a few times, including crime movie Gangster Squad and the critically acclaimed La La Land.
Megan Fox and Will Arnett wouldn't be the first duo that comes to mind when it comes to screen pairings though. Exclusive: Nick Nolte (Graves) and Jacqueline Bisset (Birds of Paradise) will star alongside Oliver Masucci (Fantastic Bests: The Secrets of Dumbledore) in Shelter Me, a pandemic-set psychological drama marking the directorial debut of actor Jake Weber.
The film will be Nolte and Bisset’s third together, on the heels of Peter Yates’ 1977 treasure-hunter adventure The Deep, based on Peter Benchley’s 1976 novel of the same name, and Til Schweiger’s 2018 Alzheimer’s dramedy, Head Full of Honey.
Shelter Me is an anthology of storylines set against the international backdrop of Covid-19. Masucci portrays Jon Boylan, an A.I. research scientist who is unable to intimately connect with members of his test group (Nolte and Bisset). He subsequently develops a remote monitoring system that exposes personal struggles, weaknesses and strengths during isolation that come to a reckoning, as their layers of personality begin to peel away.

Claws-out high school drama has inspired some pretty memorable movies. Youthful touchstones like Heathers, Cruel Intentions, and Mean Girls take the intensity of hormones and the cruelty of high school students, and mix them with snappy, era-appropriate dialogue and up-and-coming stars. It’s a potent cocktail that when mixed just right yields delicious results. Netflix is looking to follow that template with their new high school revenge comedy Do Revenge, directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, the co-writer of Thor: Love and Thunder who previously helmed Netflix’s Someone Great and created MTV’s Sweet/Vicious.
Will Do Revenge become the 2020s defacto teens-behaving-badly comedy? Only time will tell, but Do Revenge’s cast is enticing enough to suggest that the alchemy may be right for another mean girl magnum opus. Not sure where you’ve seen some of these fresh-faced stars before? Read below to find out.

The logline for “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley” is being kept under wraps, but the film is a follow-up to the trilogy of cop comedies in which Murphy plays Foley, a Detroit cop who is suspended from the force and travels to LA, only to find himself investigating the murder of a friend.

Tom Holland has proven a charming actor, capable of poignancy, humor, and super-heroic action. Stretching beyond his work as Spider-Man, he detoured into an adaptation of the Uncharted video game, coming off more as a cross between Indiana Jones and James Bond than an original character, which is not at all his fault. He is an appealing performer and you want to root for him to succeed.
The PS3 game this is based on works fine as a video game and its sequels but the simplified storytelling conventions for a video game need to be expanded and evolved for filmed entertainment. Here, screenwriters Rafe Lee Judkins, Art Marcum, and Matt Holloway let the fine cast and their audience down.
