Storytelling in gaming has changed over the years with developers often aiming for cinematic or literary experiences. But according to veteran writer Richard Dansky, best known for his work on Splinter Cell: Blacklist, this approach might be one of the main reasons modern games fall short.

Dansky believes many developers fail to recognize the unique strengths of video games as a medium, attempting to make games that resemble novels or films rather than embracing their interactive nature. Instead of embracing the unique possibilities of video games, developers often constrain themselves with the limitations of traditional storytelling methods.

Your browser does not support the video tag. Night Sky, a sci-fi series on Prime Video, was canceled after just one season due to low viewership, despite positive reviews and a unique concept. The show centered around an older couple, Franklin and Irene, who discovered a device that could transport them to another world to "see the stars." Night Sky explored mature themes of grief and mortality, while also delivering a captivating story filled with mystery and love. Despite its cancellation, there is hope that the series could find a new home and continue its story.

Final Fantasy X‘s Tidus has been a topic of debate among fans for a long time. This is mostly due to his inconsistent portrayals across various remakes and spin-offs. Many fans have expressed disappointment with Square Enix’s inability to replicate his original look, particularly his tan and Okinawan influence.
The character’s changing appearance has led to criticism, with fans claiming that each subsequent version fails to capture the original’s essence. And a recent official render of the character that was released has sparked discussions once again.

Universal Pictures has released all three of filmmaker Jordan Peele’s directing efforts to date – Get Out, Us, and Nope. And their working relationship is going to continue with the fourth movie Peele will be directing, a project that is, so far, only known as Untitled Fourth Film Directed by Jordan Peele. In early 2023, Universal announced that they would be releasing Peele’s fourth film on Wednesday, December 25, 2024… but the strikes that hit Hollywood last year threw Peele off track and the movie was removed from Universal’s release schedule. Now it’s back on there, as Deadline reports that Universal is aiming to get Peele’s fourth film into theatres on October 23, 2026. What was once meant to be a Christmas release will now be arriving just in time for Halloween!

Patty Doyle's death in training leads to NASA accepting female astronauts, a pivotal moment in For All Mankind. Cass Bugg's portrayal of Patty is heroic and tragic, showcasing her talent for more significant roles. Patty is Bugg's most significant performance to date, though she does have a noteworthy role as Jeanine Albemarle in Night Sky.
Patty Doyle (Cass Bugg) is a guest star in For All Mankind, and viewers may recognize the actor from some of her previous roles. For All Mankind is an alternate-history sci-fi series about the space race that ponders what would have happened if the race to the moon had just a few key events changed. Premiering on Apple TV+ in 2019, each season of the show takes place in a separate decade, which keeps the story moving but also means that occasionally characters and storylines can be easily forgotten as they're whisked into a new time period.

Universal Pictures has released all three of filmmaker Jordan Peele’s directing efforts to date – Get Out, Us, and Nope – and they’re working with him on his fourth film as well, a project that is, so far, only known as Untitled Fourth Film Directed by Jordan Peele. At one time, Universal had announced that they would be releasing Peele’s fourth film on Wednesday, December 25, 2024… but that plan has since changed. The film has been removed from Universal’s release schedule, and during a recent interview on the Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend podcast Peele confirmed that the change in release plans is due to the strikes that hit Hollywood last year. Peele is still working on the project – and he thinks it could out to be his favorite of the films he has made.

Nine months ago, Universal announced that they would be releasing Peele’s fourth film on Wednesday, December 25, 2024… but that plan has since changed. World of Reel reports that Universal has removed the film from its 2024 release slate, and it looks likely to be bumped to a date sometime in 2025.
One major reason why Universal and Peele may have decided to change the release date is the fact that they had been hoping to get the film into production this past summer – something they weren’t able to do because of the Hollywood strike that brought most productions to...

Maya and the Three is set for new life after its creator confirmed ongoing development for a "semi sequel."
In a post to X, Maya and the Three creator Jorge R. Gutiérrez explained that the fear of Netflix canceling the series early forced plans for season 1 to be a complete story. As ended up being the case, Netflix decided not to move forward with the series. While many believed this meant Maya and the Three would join similar limbos to other TV series pulled early, Gutiérrez unexpectedly added in a follow-up post that a semi-sequel set in present-day Los Angeles was in development.

Wes Craven's 1991 horror hit "The People Under The Stairs" evades easy description. It's a movie that's at once chaotic, insightful, campy, hilarious, horrifying, and weird as hell. There are images in the movie that are impossible to unsee, and ideas about race and capitalism that felt prescient in the '90s and are more relevant than ever now.
"The People Under The Stairs" has been overdue for a remake and it's only fitting that it's finally in the works courtesy of the new master of social commentary-filled thrillers, Jordan Peele. Peele's production company Monkeypaw is at work on an update to Craven's original, and while there's still a lot we don't know about "The People Under the Stairs," we're creeping into the shadows to bring you all the details we can on this fresh take on a very freaky story. Here's everything we know so far.

Ezra Claytan Daniels has been hired to pen a remake of Wes Craven’s “The People Under the Stairs” for Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw and Universal, The Wrap has learned.
The scribe behind genre-centric streaming shows like “Doom Patrol” and “Night Sky” and comics like “Upgrade Soul” will pen a remake of the 1991 original horror flick, which has accumulated a cult following since then both due to its quality and its ahead-of-its-time social topicality.
Written and directed by Craven, the original “The People Under the Stairs” concerned a young Black child (Brandon Adams) who breaks into the home of his family’s greedy landlords. Spoilers for the unaware, but he discovers incestuous adult siblings keeping young boys captive under the stairs of their large house.

It’s been a decade since Chvrches first released The Bones of What You Believe. Now, the band is honoring their celebrated debut album with a 10th anniversary reissue, which features four previously-unheard songs and five live recordings from 2013.

James Blake has returned with his sixth studio album, Playing Robots Into Heaven. Stream it below.
After trying his hand at ambient music last year, Playing Robots Into Heaven is billed as Blake’s return to form, getting back into the sort of electronic music he introduced himself with on early EPs like The Bells Sketch and Cmyk. The uptempo lead single, “Big Hammer,” is indicative of that, although with the confidence of having been in the game for over a decade now. It begins with a simple, ominous beat that swells into a trap-inspired banger, and arrives with a heist-themed music video directed by Oscar Hudson.
Blake’s international tour in support of the album begins at the Fabrique in Milan on September 18th. The trek also includes a hometown show in London at Alexandra Palace on September 28th, before wrapping up in Los Angeles on October 20th. Tickets are available here.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has always been full of powerful supervillains and superheroes. With aliens, androids, and wizards, the MCU has proved time and again that it is a large place. Yet, regardless of how many new characters have been introduced, they never came anywhere near a god's level of power. This seems to be changing, as Phase Four of the MCU has prominently featured higher beings, more so than any phase of the Infinity Saga.

The Venice and Telluride film festivals are kicking off Oscar season this week, which means the good stuff is finally on its way. Unfortunately, the streaming offerings over Labor Day weekend aren’t particularly robust. But there are a few titles worth checking out as summer fades away.
The contender to watch this week: “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny”
The first three “Indiana Jones” movies earned a collective 13 Oscar nominations, and while the franchise’s long-gestating final installment saw lukewarm reception, it could still be a below-the-line contender — especially with fall blockbusters like “Dune: Part Two” being delayed to 2024. Anytime John Williams‘ name appears in the credits, there are awards chances in the offing. Catch Harrison Ford‘s Indy swan song on VOD. It’ll stream on Disney+ later this year.
Other contenders to watch:

Anytime John Williams‘ name appears in the credits, there are awards chances in the offing. Catch Harrison Ford‘s Indy swan song on VOD. It’ll stream on Disney+ later this year.

Ahead of the LP’s Sept. 8 release, Blake has shared the Oliver Hudson-directed video for the first single “Big Hammer,” a predominantly instrumental track with sampled vocals but none from Blake himself:
