“I’ve had dinner with Bong five or six times between here and Korea,” said Bong Joon Ho’s Oscar rival Quentin Tarantino (“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”), who has been a fan of the director’s work longer than anyone else at the annual “daytime formal” Oscar Nominees Luncheon. Now the Korean filmmaker’s fans are legion, it seems.

Toot Toot! The Little Engine that Could becomes a tale of the little town that could, when their tiny rail service is discontinued. A crackerjack cast of Ealing regulars — Stanley Holloway, Naunton Wayne, John Gregson — band together to take over the little spur line and keep it running. We get to see a vintage locomotive from the early 1800s in action, but the appeal isn’t limited to lovers of trains — Ealing’s knack for inspired, understated comedy is all over this show. Plus, it’s the company’s first feature in Technicolor, and is beautifully remastered.

The adventures of Stamford Raffles, a British statesman and founder of modern Singapore, is to be told through the perspective of his wives in “Mrs Raffles.” The independently produced series has attached British writer Alison Hume as lead writer and showrunner.
The project is an adaptation of “Olivia & Sophia,” a novel written by Singapore-based writer Rosie Milne. “The untold story of their extraordinary adventures in the early 1800s will immerse viewers in the exotic and diverse countries of Southeast Asia through a thrilling mix of character-driven fiction and factual historical events,” said production company 108 Media.
The project will be developed through 108 Media’s London office by Richard Mewis. An adaptation of a novella co-written by the author’s son Joe Hill starts out with promise but soon descends into repetitive and nonsensical theatrics
“Can grass be scary?” is a key question propelling the gory Netflix chiller In the Tall Grass, an adaptation of a creepy novella uncomfortably stretched to a not-quite-as-creepy full-length feature. Greenery has proved scary before, in everything from The Day of the Triffids to Signs to the grisly extremes of The Ruins, but here, it’s more of an annoyance and plays second fiddle to the nightmarish terror of … a big rock.

We conclude (probably) our Howard Keel Centennial celebration with one of the actors last pictures before retirement (though he returned in the 1980s via "Dallas" stardom). Here's Deborah Lipp...
When Nathaniel announced a celebration of Howard Keel’s centennial, I had my pick of Keel movies. Perhaps counter-intuitively, I lept at the chance to write about my beloved The Day of the Triffids (1963). Once committed, I had a moment of fear. Here is a movie I have loved almost my entire life; a movie played over and over on local television in the pre-cable days of my youth. I have probably not seen Triffids since graduating from high school—what if it doesn’t hold up?
I need not have worried but if you want to argue that Triffids is a terrible movie, there is plenty of evidence...

Last week saw the release of a handful of new international films, with Jo Nesbø’s Headhunters topping the list, and this week brings with it a rather different line-up, with Peter Berg’s Battleship being the biggest name amongst the new arrivals, opposite Kevin Macdonald’s critically acclaimed documentary, Marley.
My picks of the week:
Kevin Macdonald’s Marley & Daniel Lee’s White Vengeance.

Neil Cross, the creator behind the acclaimed Idris Elba-led BBC series "Luther", has been hired to pen a new adaptation of the sci-fi classic "The Day of the Triffids" for Ghost House Pictures reports Heat Vision.
John Wyndam penned the 1951 post-apocalyptic classic which has since became a landmark of science-fiction literature.

Released on DVD on March 14th, Savage is the debut feature from writer-director Brian Muldowney and stars Darren Healy (Disco Pigs; Layer Cake) and Nora-Jane Noone (The Day Of The Triffids; The Descent; The Magdalene Sisters) in a gritty and brutal “Straw Dogs”-meets-“Taxi Driver” exploration of violence, obsession and revenge that has been described as “uncompromising… utterly compelling… [and] not for the faint-hearted”.
Dubliner Paul Graynor (Darren Healy) works as a freelance press photographer, visually documenting the day-to-day events of a vibrant city that, like many others, is becoming increasingly hostile and threatening. What Paul doesn’t realise is he is about to become front-page tabloid news himself. Walking home alone at night after a date with Michelle (Nora-Jane Noone), the care worker who is responsible for looking after his ailing father, Paul is accosted and violently assaulted by two youths.

Irish indie production “Savage” marks the debut of writer-director Brian Muldowney, and is basically a “Taxi Driver” style tale of urban ills and revenge, showing a distinctly non-tourist friendly side to the streets of Dublin. The film features Darren Healy (“Disco Pigs”, “Layer Cake”) in the lead, with support from Nora-Jane Noone (“The Day of the Triffids”, “The Descent”) and various nasty looking young thugs. Having enjoyed a measure of critical praise at festivals, the film now arrives on region 2 DVD via High Fliers Films, coming complete with commentary by and a Q&A session with Muldowney, plus cast auditions. Healy stars as Dubliner Paul Graynor, a press photographer whose trade often brings him into contact with the worst of humanity. One night, walking home after a date with his elderly father’s care worker Michelle (Noone), the poor man is attacked by a couple of particularly vicious youths, who...

Deadline is reporting that Mandate Pictures, on behalf of Sam Raimi, has won a bidding war for the rights to produce The Day Of The Triffids, with Raimi in line to direct (as it was is favorite film as a child). A shower of meteorites produces a glow that blinds anyone that looks at it. As it was such a beautiful sight, most people were watching, and as a consequence, 99% of the population go blind. In the original novel, this chaos results in the escape of some Triffids: experimental plants that are capable of moving themselves around and attacking people. In the 1962 film, however, the Triffids are not experimental plants. Instead they are space aliens whose spores have arrived in an earlier meteor shower. Raimi and Tapert will board the producer roster, joining Michael Preger, Angry Films' Don Murphy and Susan Montford, and Mark Gordon.

Brian Cox seems to have made a career out of being everywhere at once, popping up in Hollywood blockbusters next to Brad, Jake, Matt and friends one minute and lending his actorly weight to a low-key television drama or a play at London's Royal Court the next. In the past seven months alone, he's been a scientist with a death-wish in the BBC's re-make of The Day of the Triffids, the beleaguered ex-Speaker of the House of Commons, Michael Martin, in On Expenses and the voice of an Ood elder on Doctor Who.

Brian Cox has been cast as the villain in 20th Century Fox's Planet of the Apes prequel.
He is in final negotiations to play the cruel owner of a primate sanctuary, reports The Wrap.
Rise of the Apes, set for release in June 2011, will see Cox collaborating again with director Ruper Wyatt, with whom he worked on 2008 prison break movie The Escapist.
The story tells of a chimp called Caesar (Andy Serkis) whose intelligence evolves after experiments to find a cure for Alzheimer's disease. The ape ultimately leads a simian uprising against mankind in modern-day San Francisco.
James Franco, Freida Pinto and John Lithgow are also in the cast.
Cox's previous credits include playing baddie William Stryker in X-Men 2 and the scientist father of Dougray Scott's lead character Bill Masen in the BBC's 2009 remake of The Day of the Triffids.

How do you get someone excited for a film adaptation of Coriolanus with zero interest in Shakespeare? Pack it with a fantastic cast, of course, Not only is the film marking Ralph Fiennes. directorial debut, but it.ll feature him, Gerard Butler, John Kani, Paul Jesson, James Nesbitt, Ashraf Barhom, Lubna Azabal and Jessica Chastain. Still not convinced? What if I tack on Brian Cox and Vanessa Redgrave? According to THR, Cox and Redgrave have decided to stick together and go from the BBC production The Day of the Triffids straight to Coriolanus, which begins shooting next week in Belgrade, Serbia. Fiennes leads as the Roman general Coriolanus. Redgrave will play his mother, Volumnia, who insists that he join the Senate. What seems like inevitable success turns into a disaster when conniving tribunes stifle his efforts. Coriolanus grows so upset he incites a riot, which ultimately leads to his expulsion.

Missed the BBC mini-series remake of “The Day of the Triffids”? Don’t worry, you can still catch it on DVD, which the Associates has released on a two disc Ultimate Edition DVD earlier this month on February 1st, and they’ve scheduled a single disc Blu-ray edition on February 22. The film, “an effects-laden CGI extravaganza about a world threatened by carnivorous, man-eating plants – boasts a star-studded cast that includes Dougray Scott (Desperate Housewives), Joely Richardson (Nip/Tuck), Eddie Izzard (Valkyrie; Ocean’s Thirteen), Brian Cox (The Bourne Supremacy), Vanessa Redgrave (Atonement; Evening), Jason Priestley (My Name Is Earl; Medium), Shane Taylor (Band Of Brothers) and Ewen Bremner(Hallam Foe).” With traditional global fuel sources dwindling, mankind’s search for an alternative has led to the cultivation and harvesting of the Triffid, a relatively newly discovered plant rich in oil extracts. Capable of seemingly intelligent behaviour and able to move around on their leg-like roots,...

BBC Two's night of programming themed around June Whitfield Cbe was a ratings success last Tuesday (December 29). The veteran actress and future DS Icon was celebrated in the documentary The Many Faces Of June Whitfield, which averaged 2.44m (10.4%) in the 9pm hour. Earlier, a rerun of the 1995 episode of This Is Your Life featuring Whitfield - then OBE - appealed to 2.28m (9.7%) between 8pm and 8.30pm, after which the 1985 festive special of Terry and June kept hold of 2.05m (8.6%). A classic episode of Absolutely Fabulous drew 2.16m (10.6%) from 10pm. The concluding half of The Day Of The Triffids was seen by 5.6m (24.3%) between 9pm and 10.30pm on BBC One. The audience was down around 500k on the first episode. Earlier, Holby City took 5.86m (24.8%) for BBC One in the 8pm hour, easily trumping ITV1's Funniest Ever (more)...

Doctor Who special The End of Time certainly improved in its second instalment but the same can't really be said for The BBC's adaptation of The Day of the Triffids, which lost some of its sting.
I'm left with the feeling that there should have been a few more episodes to develop the story. But it was a brave effort at updating John Wyndham's classic novel and boasted a top-notch cast. Spoilers ahead...
The Triffids themselves - which were not shown in any images or trailers before the programme aired - were fine when they appeared, this time looking more like lilies than the pitcher plants of the 1981 serial and with writhing root tendrils for locomotion (and snaring prey) rather than the ginseng-like nodules of their earlier incarnation.
These man-eaters were a naturally-occurring species from Africa rather than being the result of 'ingenious biological meddling' in Russia (as in...

BBC Two even fared better than ITV1, taking 2.63m (11.6%) for retrospective programme Not Again: Not The Nine O'Clock News. Also between 9pm and 10.30pm, Channel 4's The Greatest Songs Of The Noughties averaged 1.09m (4.8%). Ever since I first saw those amazing opening scenes from 28 Days Later, I've been waiting for someone to step-up and adapt John Wyndham's brilliant apocalyptic novel The Day of the Triffids, and do it right. We had a disastrous film version in 1962, that I watched once and vowed never to revisit. There is also a far more faithful UK television adaptation from 1981 that I would recommend to anyone who might be curious, although it was somewhat limited by a low budget and quite stilted direction, although the bleakness and horror were certainly there.
So now it's 2009, and we have a fairly big budget BBC adaptation with some serious star power: Dougary Scott (Mi:2), Joely Richardson (Nip/Tuck), Eddie Izzard (Valkary), Vanessa Redgrave (Atonement), Ewen Bremner (Trainspotting) and one of my favourite actors Mr.

Richardson Joins The Tudors
Joely Richardson is throwing herself back into work following the tragic death of her sister Natasha earlier this year - she has landed a high profile role in period drama The Tudors.
The former Nip/Tuck star was left devastated when her sibling passed away in March following a skiing accident.
She recently completed work on TV movie The Day Of The Triffids and is continuing her busy schedule with an appearance in the hit historical TV show opposite Jonathan Rhys Meyers, who portrays King Henry VIII.

Back in February we brought you news of that the cast of BBC's remake of The Day of the Triffids was actually looking pretty stellar with Vanessa Redgrave, Joely Richardson, Jason Priestley and Brian Cox rounding out the list of top-liners. Well now we've got your first look at the cast in action in this first promotional image from the Beeb (via: broadcastnow).
In the not too distant future, man's search for an alternative fuel supply leads him to uncover the ominous Triffid, a crop now cultivated for its fuel that seems to have a life of its own. But when billions of humans are mysteriously blinded, the Triffids find their way out of captivity. Free to roam the planet with a fatal sting, and a retributive taste for human flesh, the Triffids begin rapid breeding.
Now Dr Bill Masen (Dougray Scott) must lead the brave in their epic battle...

Neeson Completes Chloe Movie
Grieving actor Liam Neeson has returned to shoot the final scenes of his forthcoming movie Chloe after he was forced to abandon filming to be at the side of his dying wife Natasha Richardson during her final hours.
The Irish star quit the production of Chloe in Toronto, Canada on 16 March after learning Richardson had been hospitalised in Montreal, Canada after a fall during a skiing lesson.
He then flew his seriously ill partner to New York, where he was joined by family members and close friends at the Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan. Richardson passed away two days later.
The producers of Chloe rescheduled shooting to accommodate Neeson, allowing him time to comfort his devastated sons, Michael, 13, and Daniel, 12.
The star threw himself back into filming once he had buried his beloved wife last Sunday - returning to Toronto to wrap the movie.
But he was lost in mourning when the cameras were turned off, according to New York gossip column PageSix.
A source who spotted him sitting alone in a Toronto hotel tells the publication, "It was so sad. He looked like he was in an Edward Hopper print."
Neeson's representative confirms the actor has "completed the movie".
Neeson's sister-in-law Joely Richardson also returned to work on TV movie The Day Of The Triffids. However, bereaved Vanessa Redgrave, mother of Natasha and Joely Richardson, has delayed a charity performance in New York from April to October following her daughter's death.

Well this is a blast from the past - It was waaaay back in 2007 that we first reported that a contemporary remake of the classic British sci-fi classic The Day of the Triffids, was in the works. After that news on the production pretty much dropped off a cliff….until now. Variety have just released news on a pretty stellar cast list for the TV movie which will include: Dougray Scott, Joely Richardson, Brian Cox, Eddie Izzard, Jason (hmm??) Priestley and Vanessa Redgrave. And its gets even better. ”ER” and “Law and Order” writer Patrick Harbinson has written the script. A great story, a superb cast and gritty British production values. Count us In. Running at around 4 hours, the two part mini series will air on the BBC in the UK this year. No pics or trailer yet, but we have found a teaser poster. 2011, man has created a substitute...
