Just finished the finale (hope there's a second season) and this show resonated with me in a huge way. It's so well written, beautifully acted (have to single out Jon Pointing who plays Danny - I thought he was going to be a one dimensional character at the very beginning but wow) and the show has such a massive heart.
Pure brilliance.

First and foremost, this is a comedy and as other reviewers have mentioned, in the genre of the classic British sitcom. In this respect, it performs outstandingly.
Yes, serious issues are tackled but they are not presented in an overbearing way, rather as part of everyday life. Which they are to the people who have to deal with them.
It has some hilarious moments and there are some excellent one-liners in there. It also has serious moments, including a very emotional and tear-jerking finale.
Jon Pointing deserves a special mention for an absolutely stellar performance as Danny. The rest of the cast all gel together nicely and all play their parts well.
My only criticism - it was too short. There needs to be a Season 2. It more than deserves it.

Surprisingly the release went quiet but I am glad to discover it after a review at guardian. If you are into bright blue real life looking dramedies, that is 100% must. Actors, plot, twists and the way how it shot is brilliant. Yes-yes-yes!

Absolutely brilliant. Captured the vulnerability of students leaving the nest and going off to uni. Really funny in places and also very touching and emotional. I loved it.

One of those series where you want another 20 episodes but you also appreciate its length. Characters really gel together and its funny throughout with a great storyline. I do want more...

The more you watch of this, the more you will get it. Each episode makes your appreciate the whole story a little bit more. It's not meant as a route one comedy, rather it's something slightly more subtle and well worth your time. As a Watfordian, it's also an affectionate and accurate portrayal of that suburban life. I hope there is more.

What an honest and brave look at young people's challenges and successes around mental health, navigating sexuality and general early adulthood. So cleverly written, kind and absolutely hilarious. I was truly touched by this show.

We've been waiting a long time for a kind of coming of age show like this. It has as much heart as it does humour and shows the gay community and its allies as a normal group of people. Not defined by their sexuality.
Plus the soundtrack is great for anyone who spent their 20,s or 30's around 2010.

Series 3 Review:
What a heart warming story about 2 best friends. I have to admit even though in series 1 and 2 it left hints of what happens, I really didn't expect it. It was so sad and yet so beautiful. It really shows how some people are so special to us that even when they're gone, we still carry them with us.
As a whole the show is funny, witty and uplifting, with a hint of sadness. I'd definitely watch it over again.
Series1 & 2 Review: I really enjoyed series 2 and by the end of it i was gutted there wasn't more episodes. I wish the episodes were longer or the show had more of them.
I did feel like series 1 was a lot funnier than the second one but there was some moment i found hilarious. The character building and back stories did touch home a little bit. Each story felt so personal which helped me to be invested in the show even more. I also love that it is based on a true story of the narrator.
All in all I did think the show was brilliant and I'm really looking forward to series 3. Hopefully it'll have just as many laughs in it as series 1.

I enjoyed this so much that I binged both series within two days. My favourite character was Katy Wix's Jules, and I loved the way she popped up at the most inopportune moments. Much to the annoyance of Tom (Robert Gilbert), another of my favourites.
My score was dragged down by three elements. First the idea of a queer chosen family has already been done to death, in Queer As Folk and It's A Sin. So it was tiresome to hear not only Jack but also Yemi hammering home that point. We got it in the 2000s. Second, why was gay sex always portrayed without any affection? People are slammed up against cubicle walls, forced into cupboards or fisted in the dark. I know that happens but it would have been nice to see just one scene of tenderness between two lovers. Finally, was it necessary for almost everyone to swear so much? It wasn't funny.

This is a tricky show for me to review. I can see how people might like it. I REALLY disliked it.
One thing is clear - despite the trailers and the casting this is NOT a comedy. Laughs are few and far between, and most of them are based on pretty thin one liners.
It's basically a sentimental show about the writer's first year at university, shortly after the death of his father, and the parallel troubles one of his university friends is going through. All told through Jack Rooke's narration..
But the university scenes feel artificial, with a friendship group that comes together for no apparent reason, and the family are salt-of-the-earth Londoner's that only exist in sitcoms. If this is what Jack's actual experience was, its surprising that it played out like a badly written cliche.
The show bravely includes scenes of promiscuous gay culture. Certainly uncomfortable. But I didn't find it funny. If anything it was mostly exploitative of Jack's naivety.
The best thing about the show by far is Jon Pointing's performance as Danny. Like most of the cast, his character is sketched out really thinly - we barely explore why he is a mature student, or what his background is - but he manages to bring sensitivity to his character, and his scenes with his grandmother are very touching.
Rather like Gameface or This Way Up, it's another example of a comedy writer being given the chance to write something more personal. And like those shows, it ends up a bit light on the laughs. But it lacks the relatable characters that allowed those dramas to develop.

Big Boys is about a shy kid going to uni and although it has (somewhat-typical for recent Channel Four comedy) Inbetweeners-style humour it has a bit more heart to it than that show and the two leads are allowed to both lean into the silly bawdy humour and yet still be emotionally honest and plausibly genuine.
I enjoyed episode one a lot and will look forward to binging the rest.

I rarely review TV series, but I felt I had to write one for this show. It's a Masterpiece!, Pure gold, it's funny, it's sad it's everything I want from a TV show. Excellent acting. I thoroughly enjoyed it, really hope they revisit for a second series .

NO SPOILERS! This show tackles so much...coming out, mental health, finding your tribe...in a tender and sometime laugh out loud way. I loved it. I intend on watching with my two college age sons during the next break. I hope they can be as good an LGBTQIA ally as Danny is on the show. *cheers*

Such a funny and original show. You will not regret watching it. It's a very situational comedy style, a lot like The White Lotus. It is rare to come across something this entertaining. I only wish there were more episodes!!!
PS. I've watched more than just the first episode, unlike the other reviewers ;-P.

Loved the bromance between a straight and gay best friends. The comedy was great and it dealt with serious topics such as mental health issues. I thought it was brilliant.

There have recently been a ~relatively~ decent number of shows that center around a young gay protagonist; Love victor, please like me, heartstopper, etc. Big boys is possibly the most understated and comforting of the lot. It's a show about loss, sexuality, and community. But it isn't so focused on one theme that it can't support the others. On top of all of this, it manages to feel less like a drama and more like a classic British sit-com. I really hope this show gets similar levels of attention to the aforementioned. It obviously doesn't have the biggest budget, but it has some stellar acting, writing, and an abundance of warmth. We need more lovely shows like Big Boys in production.

It's about a pathetic kid with no personality going to uni and coming out. I think it's meant to be a comedy but it's not funny at all. The poor storyline is made slightly worse by constant narration which is dull and lifeless.

Heartwarming, clever, and fabulously written TV. Loved every minute of it and can't wait for a second series 😍 The cast were superb and episode six made me itch for the next part of the story. Highly recommended.

I binged watched the series and after a bit of a slow start, I ended up loving this little gem. It is funny and moving all at the same time. It tackles coming out and mental health issues brilliantly. I look forward to series 2.

I started watching this and I was a little apprehensive, by the third episode I was fully immersed into the lives of the characters and their personalities, this is such a well written TV series showing the lives of modern day University students, some of it may not be for the liking of everyone, but this TV series has got to up with the best of this genre.
