The wellspring of creativity resides within the human mind. Amid the monotony of daily routines in a static world, people find solace in creativity and imagination. Within the confines of a mundane office setting, we all yearn for a room of our own, where the regular cacophony fades, and we can function attentively to bring out the best of our work. In this place, the hidden brilliance of an individual that gets lost in the crowd could thrive once again.
Drawing inspiration from Jonas Karlsson’s novel The Room, Joachim Back’s inaugural feature, Corner Office, explores a similar notion. It envisions a haven where reality’s limits disappear, letting people express themselves and their creativity. Unfortunately, only a few can create such a haven. Like the film’s main character, Orson (played by John Hamm), a typical office worker who excels only in his personal inner chamber at work...

With shows like Severance leading the charge, workplace satire is taking a turn for the increasingly surreal as it deconstructs the white-collar American experience. Part of this wave is Joachim Black's dark comedy Corner Office, which opened at the Tribeca Film Festival last year and is poised for a wide theatrical and video-on-demand release this August. Based on the novel The Room by Jonas Karlsson, Corner Office is a stylishly dour and turgid film that is never as biting or subversive as it seems to think it is.
Unassuming office worker Orson (Jon Hamm) begins working for a shadowy corporation known simply as The Authority, where he finds the daily office culture and many of his co-workers to be mind-numbingly dull. Unable to connect with any of his immediate colleagues, including his office neighbor Rakesh (Danny Pudi), Orson stumbles across a secret room in the office that contains reality-bending properties.

Adapted from Swedish novelist Jonas Karlsson’s The Room, director Joachim Back’s Corner Office opens with Orson (Jon Hamm) arriving on the first day of his new job at The Authority. The company, housed in a monolithic, brutalist tower, is likely what the average person thinks of when they think of “Kafkaesque.” Whatever services its workers provide remains a complete mystery, and Orson, the consummate employee, adheres to a strict efficiency-maximizing routine and looks down on his co-workers, particularly his deskmate Rakesh (Danny Pudi), for what he takes to be laziness and incompetence. His stated desire to become “a person to be reckoned with” would seem to be out of joint with his subservience.
While hunting for office supplies, Orson stumbles across the titular office, seemingly unused. For him, this room represents the pinnacle of design, what with its precision layout, the abstract paintings adorning its wood-paneled walls, its lighting,...

Workplace dramas are all the rage right now, thanks to films like “Blackberry” and shows likes “Severance,” “The Consultant,” “WeCrashed,” and “Industry.” But who paved the way for works like that? That’s right, Don Draper and “Mad Men,” a series that remains one of the highlights of 21st-century TV. So it’s comforting, in a way, to see Jon Hamm back in a cubicle for “Corner Office,” a new dark comedy hitting theaters and Digital/On Demand next month.

"They don't care about you! You're a number in a column on a spreadsheet...!" Lionsgate has revealed the official trailer for an indie film called Corner Office, a workplace comedy in the same vein as Office Space and "Severance" with a few tricks up its sleeves. There's been many of these corporate-work-sucks series recently, such as "The Consultant" and "Glamorous" and "WeCrashed" and "Industry", along with all the classics like "The Office". This premiered at last year's Tribeca Film Festival, and played at the Raindance & Fort Lauderdale Film Fests. In this office satire, Jon Hamm plays Orson, a straight-laced employee at a big, generic corporation who discovers a blissfully empty corner office to get away from his colleagues. But why does this seem to upset them so much? What is really going on? Starring Danny Pudi, Christopher Heyerdahl, Allison Riley, Shawn Macdonald, and Sarah Gadon. That is one magnificent mustache on Hamm,...

Latin American companies have descended on the 60th LA Screenings, mindful of the ever-shifting panorama in content distribution and production.
The ongoing writers’ strike is viewed by some as a boon for international content. Take what Netflix co-ceo Ted Sarandos said at the company’s first quarter financials report presentation when the writers’ strike was looming: “If there’s a strike — and we want to work really hard to make sure we can find a fair and equitable deal so we can avoid one — but if there is one, we have a large base of upcoming shows and films from around the world.”
“The global market is finally realizing that Latin America, with almost 700 million inhabitants that speak the same language, is a territory that has a huge penetration in terms of Ott and – still – pay tv subscribers,” says Mexico City-based Manuel Marti, Fremantle’s head of scripted development, Latin America.

Most of the time, most people’s lives are pretty boring. Passing the day at the office, then coming home to do laundry and microwave dinner. Movies tend to cut these bits out, to focus on the escapist stuff, but every once in a while one comes along, searching for poetry in the mundane. From its confessional title, “Sometimes I Think About Dying” reveals that it will be about the interior life of a relatively private person, played by Daisy Ridley, who sits at her cubicle, imagining her body hanging from a nearby crane, or her corpse rotting on the forest floor.
Who’s to say what Ridley’s slump-shouldered, drably dressed character, Fran, is thinking about when her mind floats away? Director Rachel Lambert doesn’t elaborate on whatever emotion is stirring behind Fran’s eyes, though she does at times depict her daydreams, presenting them as images more than complete thoughts.

Writer-producer-director Theodore Melfi has a different take than those who think independent filmmaking is becoming an endangered species; in fact, he tells me right now we are in “a golden age of independent film.” That might be one of the reasons he is bullish about both films he has at this week’s Tribeca Festival in New York City — independently produced movies he is helping shepherd along. On Corner Office, which stars Jon Hamm, he is an executive producer, and on American Dreamer, he is the screenwriter as well as a producer of the comedy that stars Peter Dinklage, Shirley MacLaine and Matt Dillon. Both are for sale, and the bottom line is Melfi truly believes the audience will dictate whatever the perfect form of distribution is, whether it be theatrical, streaming, digital VOD or a combination of all three.

Editor’s note: This review was originally published at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival. Lionsgate releases the film in theaters and on VOD and digital on Friday, August 4.
Orson (Jon Hamm) is an upwardly mobile corporate drone who suffers from Main Character Syndrome in a Kafkaesque work environment, his arrogance so vigorously rubbing against his anonymity that the friction created between those two forces is almost powerful enough to sustain the ultra-droll office satire that “Corner Office” constructs around it. Adapted from Jonas Karlsson’s lightly surreal (but extremely Scandinavian) novella, “The Room,” Joachim Back’s feature-length debut promotes a typical skewering of corporate drudgery with the hint of a curious new twist.
Whereas stories about paper-pushing worker drones have been done to death — to the point that Back’s film can seem perversely familiar when it isn’t futzing with the blueprints of reality — the human cog at the center...

After launching a delayed hybrid version of its annual event last summer, the Tribeca Festival is back with a multi-pronged approach to its vast programming this month. Once again, the festival will host a number of in-person events, including films, talks, masterclasses, and starry events, but those looking to enjoy the event from home will still be able to participate, thanks to the Tribeca At Home platform.
This year’s festival will open with the Jennifer Lopez Netflix documentary “Halftime” on June 8. The film, directed by Oscar-nominated Tribeca alum Amanda Micheli (“Vegas Baby”), will host its world premiere at the festival before premiering on the streamer June 14. The festival will close with the Al Sharpton-centric documentary “Loudmouth” on June 18, and also host a gala screening of B.J. Novak’s “Vengeance.” In between, it will screen a variety of films from new names, rising stars, and old favorites.

The festival...
