Donnie Yen reveals how a change in the script for his latest feature, The Prosecutor, allowed for him to reunite with one of his Ip Man co-stars. Yen, who has previously portrayed Chirrut Imwe in 2016's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and High Table assassin Caine in John Wick: Chapter 4, is best known for playing Ip Man in the movie series of the same name focused on the Wing Chun master. The Prosecutor sees Yen portraying a public prosecutor going to great lengths to defend his client, by any means necessary.
When speaking to Screen Rant, Yen opened up about how one notable casting choice for The Prosecutor almost never came to pass due to the movie's original script. Yen revealed that originally, Kent Cheng's Bao Ding was envisioned as a younger character to better fit the dynamic. However, Yen reconsidered once he felt that an older actor...

The Ip Man franchise is one of the most popular modern martial arts series, which tells the life story of the real Wing Chun grandmaster, Ip Man. These films were only loosely based on Ip’s real life, as it was unlikely the actual man regularly faced off against the sinister villains portrayed by martial arts movie legends like Sammo Hung, Mike Tyson, and Scott Adkins in the movies. However, the Ip Man films broadly followed Ip’s life story from his early 40s in conflict-ridden China to his death at 79 in 1972.
Martial arts icon Donnie Yen powerfully portrayed Ip Man throughout the series. Although Yen was a similar age to Ip in the first installment, the kung fu star continued to tell the story of Ip’s life as he entered his 70s and beyond. Each film in the Ip Man franchise depicted the different facets of the grandmaster's...

Legendary Hong Kong martial arts star and filmmaker Sammo Hung gave a masterclass at the Tokyo International Film Festival, where at age 72 he demonstrated that while he now uses a cane, his charismatic abilities and innovative spirit remain. Hung held an engaging talk where he shared lessons from over 60 years in the industry developing martial arts cinema.
Born into a performing family, Hung’s journey began with training at Hong Kong’s prestigious Peking Opera school. “The training was very rigorous,” Hung recalled. “We learned fundamental movements so by graduation you could perform nearly any move.” This training laid the groundwork for his future success in martial arts films.
Hung’s film career started early, with his debut at age 9 in the 1960s. A pivotal moment came in 1973’s “Enter the Dragon” where Hung fought Bruce Lee in the opening scene. After Lee’s tragic death, Hung took on choreographing...

In a career that has spanned seven decades, Hong Kong action movie legend Sammo Hung has seen a lot, and moreover, his body has been through a lot. So it wasn’t a surprise to see the 72-year-old use a cane as he took the stage for a masterclass session at the Tokyo International Film Festival. But as he captivated an appreciative audience, the confidence and humor that have seen Hung through his illustrious career in martial arts movies shone bright.
Born into a showbiz family, Hung’s career began as a child actor while at the China Drama Academy, a Peking Opera school in Hong Kong. He made his film debut in the early 1960s, aged nine. A slightly grainy, black and white clip of the film showed a fresh-faced boy Hung, to coos from his assembled admirers. “Training at the school was very severe. We learned all the fundamental movements.

Ip Man 5 with Donnie Yen is confirmed and may rectify Master Law's past defeats in the franchise. Lo Mang, a former martial arts star, deserves a huge win in Ip Man 5 to honor his legacy. The film should pay homage to Lo Mang's Shaw Brothers movies by showcasing his unique fighting style.
An insult to a kung fu movie legend can finally be rectified if one supporting character returns for Ip Man 5. The martial arts movie franchise appeared to reach a conclusion with Ip Man 4: The Finale's ending, but it's since become apparent that even the death of the titular character hasn't killed the series. Somehow, though, Ip Man 5 is happening regardless.

Bruce Lee forever changed Kung Fu movies, leaving behind a legacy that influenced martial arts worldwide. Jackie Chan's comedic timing and dangerous stunts solidified his role as the greatest Kung Fu star ever. Lesser-known stars like Fung Hak-on and Yuen Biao made significant contributions to the genre as well.
There have been so many incredible Kung Fu movie stars who left their mark on the martial arts genre, but over the years, a select few stood out as the greatest of all time. Following the massive interest in Kung Fu that developed during the 1970s in the wake of Bruce Lees incredible success, there were plenty of other stars who made a name for themselves both in Hong Kong and Hollywood productions. The Ip Man series features some of the best hand-to-hand action scenes in modern cinema. Ip Man faces a variety of opponents in different styles, showcasing his versatile skills. The best fight is between Ip Man and Master Hung in Ip Man 2, a legendary battle of skills.
The Ip Man series has some of the 21st century's best hand-to-hand action scenes, with their best fights standing out from almost anything else in modern cinema. The series focuses on Ip Man, a real-life Wang Chun Martial Arts Master. Played by Donnie Yen in the movies, Ip Man is a patient and kind man who nevertheless possesses the skills and will of a true warrior.
His greatest challenges range in combat style, all while Ip Man survives Japan's occupation of China in World War II, the efforts of corrupt foreign interests to abuse and mock Martial Arts, and the challenges of moving to the United States.

Ip Man 5 could be a spin-off that focuses on characters inspired by Ip Man, exploring their journeys and possibly featuring Ip Man in a supporting role through flashbacks. Another possibility for Ip Man 5 is to delve into the life of Wong Shun Leung, Ip Man's first student, and how he spreads his mentor's teachings to the next generation. The fifth installment could also focus on Ip Man's sons, Ip Chun and Ip Ching, as they carry on their father's legacy after his death, showcasing the family drama and emphasizing their journeys.

Where to Watch Powered by Bruce Lee's character Chen Zhen in Fist of Fury is a fictional character created by writer Ni Kuang, but his master Huo Yuanjia was a real historical figure. Fist of Fury draws on real historical events and themes of nationalism, adding authenticity to its narrative, despite fictionalizing many aspects of Chen Zhen's storyline. Other martial arts movies, such as The Legendary Fok and Fearless, have also portrayed Huo Yuanjia, showcasing his underdog story and contribution to Chinese martial arts.
Bruce Lee has taken on many personas on the big screen, but his most iconic hero and the realism in his backstory begs an intriguing question: is he based on a real martial artist? Drawing inspiration from China and Japan's historical tensions, Fist of Fury ensues in the 20th century when a martial arts master, Chen Zhen, returns to his former school following his master Huo Yuanjia's death.

It's safe to assume that Donnie Yen's appearance in John Wick: Chapter 4 was the first time many had seen this amazing action star in motion. While his brawl with Keanu Reeves was a sight to behold, Yen has had a lengthy history in the action genre, pumping out stellar film after stellar film that not only shows off his martial arts prowess but also tells compelling stories on top of it. Arguably one of his most successful ventures is Ip Man, a series chronicling the life of the eponymous Wing Chun grandmaster who famously mentored the late Bruce Lee.
Now spanning over four entries over a decade, the announcement of another mainline Ip Man film both surprised and stunned some. While it'll be a while before we see Yen on the big screen again, there's no better time to invest yourself in the grandiose story of Ip Man.

His feelings seem to be confirmed when Steve (Ben Plunkett-Reynolds; Jack and Ralph Plan a Murder), the director, and his assistant Piet (Bartholomäus Kowalski; Ultimate Justice) are having issues and the stunts keep going wrong. Ip Man: Kung Fu Master is the latest film to portray the legendary grandmaster of Wing Chun Kung Fu, Ip Man, the real life teacher of Bruce Lee who lived from 1983 to 1972. All the films have been heavily fictionalized, and the Ip Man film franchise is far from unified. There have been multiple actors, directors and filmmakers featuring Ip Man, and this new film is independent from all of those, although confusingly enough, it’s very connected.

Flat-footed storytelling meets fleet-footed choreography and sumptuous production values in the untaxingly fun “Ip Man 4: The Finale,” the last installment of director Wilson Yip and producer-star Donnie Yen’s glossy mythmaking tetralogy about the famous Wing Chun master.
The insistent subtitle is there for a reason: everyone, Yen included, thought that “Ip Man 3” would be his last time donning Ip Man’s priestlike tunic. Then again, after “Ip Man 2,” still the best in the franchise, Yen was also reportedly reluctant to return. A little like the great, wise, noble sifu (“master-father”) he so convincingly embodies, Yen apparently only re-enters the fray when circumstances (read: box office) leave him no other option.
The problem, then, is how to sustain a story that had largely run out of arc by the bruising climax of the last film? The solution the regular team of screenwriters — Edmond Wong, Chan Tai-lee, Jil Leung,...

China’s internet is thrilled by news that Marvel appears to be insisting on casting an ethnic Chinese actor as Shang-Chi in the master of kung fu’s own spinoff film and has begun scouting out candidates for the role.

He added that the studio has “been adamant to reps offering up their clients for the role” that candidates “have to be of Chinese ancestry,” with no other Asian ancestry accepted.

Disney’s live-action version of the classic Disney tale comes on the heels of various revival projects like “The Jungle Book” and “Beauty and the Beast,” both of which grossed over $1 billion worldwide. “Beauty and the Beast” grossed $174.8 million its opening weekend alone. A remake of “The Lion King” is one of many upcoming live-action projects.
The animated “Mulan,” released in 1998, was based on the Chinese legend of Hua Mulan and was directed by Tony Bancroft and Barry Cook. It grossed $304.3 million worldwide after earning $22.7 million its opening weekend.
Yen was the martial arts choreographer for 2000’s “Highlander: Endgame” and 2002’s “Blade II,” appearing in both of those films as an actor, as well. He also starred opposite Jackie Chan in 2003’s “Shanghai Knights.”

Yen made his movie debut in the 1984 Hong Kong film “Drunken Tai Chi” and came to wider attention with his portrayal of Nap-lan Yun-seut in 1992’s “Once Upon a Time in China II.” His international breakthrough came playing the title character in 2008’s “Ip Man,” based on Wing Chun grandmaster — and Bruce Lee’s teacher — Yip Man. He reprised that role in 2010’s “Ip Man 2” and last year’s “Ip Man 3,” where Yen starred opposite boxing legend Mike Tyson – and accidentally broke the champ’s finger during a fight scene.
Yen is repped by CAA, Bullet Films, and Bloom Hergott.

Ip Man 2, from Cine Asia, is a semi-biographical martial arts film loosely based on the life of Wing Chun grandmaster, Ip Man. The film was directed by Wilson Yip and Sammo Hung, produced by Raymond Wong, written by Edmond Wong, and stars martial arts legend, Donnie Yen, who reprises the leading role.
This sequel continues on from events in the first Ip Man film, and covers Ip Man’s life in Hong Kong, which was at the time under British colonial rule, and recovering from the Japanese invasion of China. Ip Man’s main hurdles are his reduced circumstances, British oppression, and rivalry from other martial arts practitioners, including the local Hung Ga master Hung Chun-nam, as played by Sammo Hung.

If ain't broke, don't fix it! That seems to be the theory with the very popular martial arts franchise Ip Man at this point, anyway. Star Donnie Yen recently announced that he is indeed planning on returning for Ip Man 4 after the very successful third entry was released earlier this year.
The modern day martial arts legend took to his Instagram to make the announcement that IP Man 4 is happening. While there was a pretty significant gap of nearly five years between the release of Ip Man 2: Legend of the Grandmaster and Ip Man 3, it seems like Donnie Yen is wasting no time in getting Ip Man 4 off the ground. Here is what he had to say about the movie in his Instagram post.

In Ip Man 3, Donnie Yen returns for another outing as legendary martial arts instructor Ip Man. Still under the direction of Wilson Yip, the newest installment trades Sammo Hung for Yuen Wo-ping as action choreographer, ensuring that the extended fight sequences remain the focal points for the narrative. Structurally, Ip Man 3 is closer to Ip Man (2008) than Ip Man 2 (2010), in that it's more easily divided into multiple chapters in the life of the titular character. Rather than the first film's wartime tragedies, however, the focus narrows to an even more personal story, in that Ip Man's loyal and supportive wife Wing Sing (Lynn Xiong) must deal with a life-changing illness. In the first two films, Wing Sing remained dutifully in...

In just a few short days, we'll be saying au revoir to 2015, and ringing in 2016, a year ripe with cinematic potential. This coming year will mark the first time that two iconic superheroes will share the big screen (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice), the start of Marvel Phase Three (Captain America: Civil War and Doctor Strange), and the end of a beloved superhero trilogy (X-Men: Apocalypse). Oh yeah, and another Star Wars movie is coming out as well (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story). All of these aforementioned movies are either sequels or part of an established universe, and they all very well may be some of the biggest movies of the year. But there are also a slew of follow-ups that you may not be so familiar with.
It's certainly no secret that sequels and big franchise movies have been dominating at the box office lately. This year,...

Back in March, we reported that the long-awaited Ip Man 3 is finally moving forward, with Donnie Yen returning to star as the title character, and heavyweight boxing legend Mike Tyson also coming aboard. Today, MovieClips has the first domestic trailer for this highly-anticipated sequel, with Well Go USA setting a January 22, 2016 release date. Ip Man 3 will be going up against Dirty Grandpa and The Boy in its new release date.
Our original report from March revealed that the producers had planned on using a CGI version of late martial arts legend Bruce Lee, which certainly caused some controversy. Just one week later, it was reported that Bruce Lee's estate was trying to stop the production from using this CGI version. While we never got an update about the lawsuit filed by Bruce Lee's family, the film's IMDb page lists Kwok-Kwan Chan (Kung Fu Hustle, Shaolin Soccer) as portraying Bruce Lee,...

Dynamic, relentless and funnier than its predecessor, Ip Man 2 is the flashier, hipper and better looking of the first two films about the life of the Wing Chun grandmaster Yip Man. That said, the original Ip Man is in my opinion the better film and one of my favourite martial arts movies of all time. Now the question is, how will Ip Man 3 do?
Donnie Yen and Mike Tyson square off in the first teaser trailer for Ip Man 3, the third and possibly final chapter in the story of the legendary wing chun practitioner. Tyson’s character is reportedly based on an American property tycoon that Ip Man did once fight. Unfortunately, most of the footage in this trailer comes from the first two movies, which is a shame since it lasts only 40 seconds. Talk about a short tease.

When it comes to making features like this one, i love the idea of coming up with my own personal “100 Great Kung Fu Movies” of all time. It is tough choosing just 100 because you know there are many more great Kung Fu movies that are not on the list.
I have decided that to make the list, a movie must have a few hand to hand moments during fight scenes in the movies chosen. If for example its mainly sword play with one fight scene hand to hand it won’t make the list. Its old school “style” Kung Fu movies, not modern day settings.
I understand everyone will have their own personal favorites and some may not agree with my list and that’s fine because it’s nice to have different opinions on this genre which keeps it fresh and alive when having good debates.
Anyway, thank you...
