The Eternal Daughter: Lenkiewicz Ladles the Milk of Sorrows
Screenwriter Rebecca Lenkiewicz makes her directorial debut with Hot Milk, an adaptation of Deborah Levy’s comically menacing 2016 novel about a daughter tethered to a mysteriously ailing mother. Or, rather, it’s narrative about the point of un-tethering, fashioned a bit like the reverse situation of the Joseph Conrad novella The End of Tether (1902), wherein an aging sea captain lives solely for the happiness of his child. Having penned a number of high profile femme centered scripts, such as Disobedience (2017) for Sebastian Lelio and She Said (2022) for Maria Schrader, Lenkiewicz returns to a distilled, sinister sense of uneasiness which she mined so eloquently in Pawel Pawlikowski’s Ida (2013), where a relationship between women remains weighted down by a past they’ve been unable to articulate.…...

Director Sierra Falconer, whose debut feature will premiere next week at the Sundance Film Festival, has signed for representation at WME.
The UCLA grad’s “Sunfish (& Other Stories on Green Lake)” was selected for the U.S. dramatic competition at the 41st edition of the Utah cinema confab founded by Robert Redford. The film weaves together four interconnected tales unfolding over one summer around an idyllic lake in Northern Michigan.
“I grew up spending summers on Green Lake in rural, northern Michigan, and from the start, I knew my first film had to be a portrait of this special place,” Falconer tells Variety, adding that her film “captures small but significant moments of connection, framed by a shared sense of belonging.”

In the Prime Target trailer, Leo Woodall plays a Newton-ridiculing, mathlete determined to find a pattern in prime numbers. Cracking the code to prime numbers, figures only divisible by one and itself, means access to any computer across the globe. This also makes him the “prime target” for an unknown threat.

Has Tilda Swinton ever given a bad performance? Through an astounding career that has ranged from avant-garde theater and experimental cinema to Marvel movies, the Scottish actress never fails to dazzle, delight and dumbfound.
So it is again with her turn in The Room Next Door, her second collaboration with Pedro Almodóvar (after the 2020 short The Human Voice) and the English feature debut of the Spanish cinema giant.
An adaptation of Sigrid Nunez’s novel What Are You Going Through, Almodóvar’s film follows best-selling writer Ingrid (Julianne Moore) and Martha (Swinton) as they rekindle their friendship after losing touch. As they immerse themselves in past memories, anecdotes, art, and movies, Martha, who is battling terminal cervical cancer, wants to die with dignity and asks Ingrid to be in the next room when she takes a euthanasia pill. Brazilian director Marianna Brennand’s drama “Manas,” about a 13-year-old girl suffering abuse in the depth of the Amazon rainforest, has scored the Venice Days director’s award.
Backed by Walter Salles and the Dardenne Brothers, “Manas” is set on the island of Marajó in the Amazon rainforest. Marcielle lives near the riverbank with her father, mother and three siblings. Prompted by her mother’s words, she idolizes her older sister who supposedly escaped her reality by “finding a good man” on the barges that ply the region. As Tielle, as she is known, matures, her idealized visions shatter, leaving her trapped between two abusive environments. Increasingly worried about her younger sister and the bleak future they face, she decides to confront the oppressive system that controls her family and the women in their community.

Acclaimed British filmmaker Joanna Hogg (The Souvenir, The Eternal Daughter) will head up the jury of the Giornate degli Autori (GdA) sidebar at the upcoming 2024 Venice Film Festival. Hogg will oversee a jury of 27 young European film fans judging the movies of the parallel section, which runs alongside the Venice festival from Aug. 28 to Sept. 7. The jury will pick the section’s GdA Director’s Award.
“Throughout her cinematic journey, Hogg has examined the human soul, family and sentimental relationships with rare precision, psychological depth and authenticity,” said GdA artistic director Gaia Furrer. “Hers is an implosive cinema, as Martin Scorsese, who produced Hogg’s last three films, defined it: A cinema capable of bringing to light truths that are often uncomfortable or unspeakable.”
Hogg is best known for her pair of autobiographical dramas, The Souvenir (2019) and The Souvenir: Part II (2021), the first of which premiered in Sundance, the second in Cannes.

Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.
The Dead Don’t Hurt (Viggo Mortensen)
Though The Dead Don’t Hurt gradually becomes Vivienne’s story as Holger disappears to fight, his presence still defines the film in strange ways. While Mortensen certainly looks younger than 65 and I’m not one of those people who busts out a calculator to determine what is or isn’t an appropriate age-gap relationship, Mortensen casting himself opposite Krieps in the romantic (even action hero) lead role he’s clearly too old for (beyond maybe financing requirements) reeks of ego. Maybe this wouldn’t matter as much if he dramatized these proceedings in a way more compelling than just its interesting conceptual ideas of immigrants in the west going through the passage of time together.

Say what you will about the Deep (Chace Crawford), but the man clearly respects fish far more than the average human. He's had fish friends and even fish lovers, and has always tried his best to help them out of sticky situations. His attempts to help out his fish friends don't always work out, but the mere fact that he's trying sets him a step above the rest of the Seven. Nobody else cared when poor Lucy the whale got impaled by a boat, but the Deep stuck around to comfort her in her final hour.
Season 4 of "The Boys" takes the Deep's love for fish a step further, reintroducing us to his octopus girlfriend, Ambrosius. She's presented as sweet and loving, if perhaps a little too clingy for the Deep's liking. Most importantly, she can talk, and she's voiced by none other than Tilda Swinton. Yes, that Tilda Swinton.

Getting a feature into Cannes’ official selection is among the pinnacles of filmmaking achievements for most production companies. Ireland’s Element Pictures clearly isn’t most production companies — this year, it has three.
According to co-founder Ed Guiney, who set up Element with Andrew Lowe in 2001, while his company’s triple-headed festival visit may be “wonderful”, it’s simply down to good fortune and timing. “You know, some years you have nothing for Cannes,” he says, speaking from Element’s breezy, white-walled Dublin headquarters, located above an outdoor clothing shop and a jeweler on the Irish capital’s busy O’Connell Street, where it also runs its distribution arm Volta Pictures and the programming for the popular arthouse Light House Cinema, which it has operated since 2012.

Joanna Hogg is a minimalist, meditative director with an interest in character study and realistic drama. She's made several fantastic films, like Archipelago featuring a young Tom Hiddleston, The Eternal Daughter with Tilda Swinton, and her magnum opus, the two-part The Souvenir starring Honor Swinton Byrne and Tom Burke. Hogg's style owes much to the old masters, like Eric Rohmer and Yasujirō Ozu.

No working actor better articulates acting an act of authorship than Tilda Swinton. Beyond her work with Lynne Ramsay, Wes Anderson, and a constellation of distinctive artists, her presence is a kind co-writing; to watch her work––or better, to watch her work at work via any making-of footage––in the films of Luca Guadagnino, Joanna Hogg, and Derek Jarman is to witness a kind of live discovery function of acting. “It’s like working with my Dp,” Guadagnino told Screen Daily. “It’s like working with someone who is actually contributing to the movie itself, not just adding her voice as a performer only, but adding her voice as a filmmaker.”
Swinton confirmed this spirit (as well as a few future projects) via Les Inrockuptibles: “The Eternal Daughter is the beginning of a new era for me, yes. And my next films, those with Julio [Torres] and Joshua [Oppenheimer], but...

At the British Independent Film Awards (BIFAs) on Dec. 3, Andrew Haigh‘s “All of Us Strangers” domainted, winning seven races including Picture, Director, and Screenplay. Meanwhile, Mia McKenna-Bruce won Best Lead Performance for “How to Have Sex” while her co-star, Shaun Thomas, tied for Best Supporting Performance along with “All of Us Strangers” scene stealer Paul Mescal. But what do these little independent awards mean for the larger awards season? Let’s take a look.
Firstly, “All of Us Strangers” had a great night. The fantasy film also won Music Supervision, Cinematographer, and Editing. This overwhelming response from British voters could indicate that the same will happen at the BAFTAs. “All of Us Strangers” could be in line for nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor for Mescal, and Best Actor for Andrew Scott. Andrew Haigh’s touching new drama All Of Us Strangers was the big winner at the 2023 British Independent Film Awards (BIFA).
As the calendar year draws to a close, we’re also inching close toward the season that will see multiple prestigious awards bodies, in theory, hand the best films of the year a golden statuette. The season kicked off with the British Independent Film Awards, also known as BIFA 2023, which were held in London on the 3rd of December.
Lolly Adefope and Kiell Smith-Bynoe hosted the event which celebrated British cinema, especially the slightly lesser-seen films with budgets far smaller than that of Oppenheimer. There were some terrific films nominated this year, and the roster of winners was as surprising as it was satisfying.
Andrew Haigh’s All Of Us Strangers was the biggest winner of the night, taking home a total of four awards plus three previously announced ones.

From her striking debut to The Souvenir and new release The Eternal Daughter, the British film-maker circles around loss, memory and rebirth in dramas of piercing intensity
Joanna Hogg’s latest film, The Eternal Daughter (in cinemas now), is a ghost story; a tale of a mother and daughter – both played by Hogg’s longtime collaborator Tilda Swinton – who stay in a remote hotel where the spectres of the past are everywhere. It’s a wonderfully atmospheric piece, imbued with Hogg’s signature understated strength, and inflected with the same matter-of-fact eeriness that defined Jonathan Miller’s timeless 1968 Mr James TV adaptation Whistle and I’ll Come to You.
It was Hogg’s executive producer Martin Scorsese who encouraged her to make a ghost story, believing that she was at the right point in her life and career to do so. But Hogg’s films have always been haunted by ghosts,...

Even by its own ridiculously high standards, 2023 has been one hell of a year for British independent cinema. Whilst Hollywood has been all but shut down by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, over on this side of the pond, it feels like the candle for British indie cinema – and our collective love for those who make it possible – has never burned brighter. As such, it comes as no surprise to see today’s announcement of the nominations for the British Independent Film Awards 2023 filled with wall-to-wall bangers that represent the very best that British filmmaking has to offer.

From 2022, the awards went permanently gender neutral for acting categories with the traditional best and supporting actress and actor awards being replaced by best lead performance, best supporting performance, best joint lead performance — for performances that are the joint focus of the film — and best ensemble.
The winners will be announced at the BIFA ceremony on Dec. 3.
