Few shows in the history of television can claim to be as successful as "NCIS." The show itself was a spin-off of sorts from "Jag," but has gone on to become a monster in its own right. The flagship series has lasted over 20 seasons, but has also launched several very successful spin-offs and become a broadcast TV juggernaut. When something like this lasts so long, actors tend to come and go. Such was the case with Jennifer Esposito, who had a relatively small but beloved part to play in the show's history.

Esposito entered "NCIS" season 14 as Alex Quinn and stayed for just one season. Come time for season 15, the actress had moved onto other projects and CBS was pressing on without her. So, why did Esposito leave "NCIS," exactly? At the time, there was speculation that it had to do with her health.

Exclusive: Precious Way (Heist 88) and Jalyn Hall (Till) have joined the cast of Tracy Morgan’s untitled NBC comedy pilot from Tina Fey, Robert Carlock and writer Sam Means.

Written by Carlock and Means, the comedy stars Morgan as Reggie, a disgraced former football player on a mission to rehabilitate his image.

Billed as “The Queens: Four Legends, One Stage,” the outing is comprised of 11 dates in May and June, with tickets for the second leg going on-sale this summer. “Sharing the stage with my amazing sisters is an absolute honor,” Khan said in a press release. “Music is about connection, and this will be a celebration of the joy, power, and love that it brings to us all.” Labelle echoed her claims, saying, “I am so excited to join these icons, who I call sisters, on this tour! Ahead of Oscar voting starting up Wednesday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences officially announced the 323 feature films eligible for the 97th Academy Awards. 207 were deemed eligible for Best Picture, with major contenders like “Anora,” “The Brutalist” and “Conclave” all listed.

In order for a film to be eligible in the general entry categories, it must have opened in either Los Angeles County, the City of New York, the Bay Area, Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth or Atlanta with a seven-day qualifying run.

Additional requirements must be met for Best Picture consideration, with a confidential Academy Representation and Inclusion Standards entry form required and a consecutive or non-consecutive seven-day theatrical run in 10 of the top 50 U.S. markets, no later than 45 days after its initial 2024 release.

When working together on “Queens,” a period piece set in 1992 Peru, director Klaudia Reynicke and her director of photography Diego Romero found themselves having to confront the country’s tense political climate. This especially came into focus when filming the street protest scenes.

Reynicke had to find a workaround when it came to featuring communist drawings on the walls: “That’s something you can’t do in Peru because people are still very traumatized by the terrorists who were Maoist. So we had to think of specific scenes that we had to bring to Europe and do post-production special effects,” she says.

The film, previously released as “Reinas,” is Switzerland’s entry in the Oscars International Feature race and follows two sisters (Abril Gjurinovic and Luana Vega) and their family who find themselves torn between leaving their home country and staying after their absent father, Carlos (Gonzalo Molina), re-enters their lives.

Deadline on Monday launched the streaming site for Contenders Film: International, its daylong showcase of movies in the conversation for this year’s International Feature Oscar race.

Although Queens (Reinas) is Switzerland’s entry for the International Feature Oscar this year, the movie is actually set in Peru and told in Spanish. Director and co-writer Klaudia Reynicke, who left her native Peru at the age of 10, says the film helped her reconnect with her roots after spending most of her life in Europe and the U.S.

“I didn’t think it in a conscious way, but I had a need of going back to Peru and shooting something in Spanish,” she said during a panel at Deadline’s Contenders Film: International awards-season showcase. “Now that I have done it,” Reynicke added, “I can see that it was actually very important this reconnection, something has changed. I guess cinema allows this, right?”

Jessica Alba and Tracey Nyberg’s Lady Metalmark Entertainment has boarded “Queens,” Switzerland’s official selection for the international feature Oscar, as executive producer.

The film follows two teenage sisters living in Peru in 1992 as the country slides into political unrest. They are about to leave with their mother to live in the U.S. but they need their father to sign consent papers — he’s been absent for years but now he decides to win back his two “queens.”

Abril Gjurinovic, Luana Vega and Jimena Lindo star. The film won the Audience Award at this year’s Locarno Film Festival and the Grand Prix in Generation Kplus at the Berlinale, after world premiering at the Sundance Film Festival.

Reynicke, who co-wrote the screenplay with Diego Vega Vidal, drew on her own experience of leaving Peru as a young girl during a period of political turmoil in the early 1990s.

L.A.-based Outsider Pictures, a U.S. distribution hub for Spanish-language cinema, has snagged North American rights to three International Oscar entries to the 97th Academy Awards: Costa Rica’s “Memories of a Burning Body,” Spain’s “Saturn Return” and Switzerland’s “Queens” (Reinas”), directed by Peruvian-born helmer, Klaudia Reynicke.

In addition, it has picked up Cannes Directors’ Fortnight title “Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed” by Argentina’s Hernán Rosselli and Toronto Platform awardee “They Will Be Dust,” starring Chile’s Alfredo Castro and Spain’s Angela Molina.

“I think the recent acquisitions from Outsider reflect the exciting and challenging cinema being produced in Latin America and Spain. Fifth Season’s banner Nordic Drama Queens and Swedish channel TV4 have unveiled exclusively to Variety the trailer of “Cry Wolf,” (“Vargasommar”), an action thriller starring British musician-turned-actor Eliot Sumner, Eva Melander (“Border”) and Henrik Dorsin (“Triangle of Sadness”).

An adaptation of Hans Rosenfeldt’s first solo novel of the same name, “Cry Wolf” is repped at Mipcom by Fifth Season’s global distribution arm, ahead of the show’s world premiere at the Stockholm Film Festival and follow-up launch on TV4 Play on Dec. 25.

Set in the remote northern Swedish town of Haparanda, the story turns on police investigator Hanna Wester, as she makes the macabre discovery of human remains in the stomach of a dead wolf. The remains are soon linked to a bloody drug deal across the border in Finland. Tension escalates in sleepy Haparanda as a professional killer comes to town to recover three valuable bags.

Universal Pictures has amplified its promotional push for Wicked in recent weeks with a series of posters that have certainly done their job to generate interest for the film ahead of its November release. The marketing strategy has been great so far, with pre-sales said to be second to only Deadpool & Wolverine this year. However, one poster in particular seemed to rub fans the wrong way due to a slight alteration in the design, which pays homage to the Broadway musical's original promotional art. Almost two years have gone by since A24 announced that production was underway on the psychological horror film The Front Room, with Brandy Norwood taking on the lead role and Max and Sam Eggers – the younger brothers of The Witch, The Lighthouse, and The Northman director Robert Eggers – at the helm. The movie made its way out into the world with a theatrical release earlier this month, and now it has been given a digital release. The video was shared by the YouTube channel Multiverse of Movies, which has been posting concept trailers for imaginary movies. They are made with the use of AI-generated imagery along with the likenesses and voices of real-life Hollywood stars. The newest video, imagining a live-action take on The Incredibles, similarly casts the faux film with several big names, including Kevin James (The King of Queens) and Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow) serving as the leads. The 76th Primetime Emmys may not take place until this Sunday, but that hasn't stopped the first batch of shiny gold statues from being dutifully doled out already. During a star-studded ceremony at Los Angeles' Peacock Theater, the Creative Arts Emmy Awards — often referred to as the Tech Emmys — were announced. And, perhaps unsurprisingly given the staggering number of nominations achieved between them, feudal Japanese epic Shōgun and frenetic kitchen drama The Bear emerged as the two-night event's biggest winners. The former won an unprecedented 14 gongs, usurping Game Of Thrones' previous single drama series record of 12, whilst the latter snagged a not-too-shabby seven statues — including Guest Actor and Guest Actress awards for Jon Bernthal and Jamie Lee Curtis' Donna and Michael Berzatto.

For years, HBO limited series John Adams‘ 13 Emmys in 2008 seemed untouchable, with a number of acclaimed ongoing and limited series coming close but not being able to match the feat in a single year. In the Emmy press room, the actress stated in her speech: "Of course, its not work that you do alone, even though its a narration, but theres a whole team that pursued me and believed in me, fought for me, and worked with me to tell this amazing story of females in the wild kingdom, led by an all-female-led production team, a first in wildlife documentary filmmaking.
