“The White Lotus” star Will Sharpe was previously announced in the role of Mozart. Bettany will play Italian composer Antonio Salieri, Mozart’s longtime rival. The limited series hails from “Giri/Haji” collaborators Joe Barton and Julian Farino and is reimagined from Peter Shaffer’s award-winning stage play.

Paul Bettany made waves in 2022 when he took on the challenging task of portraying the iconic Andy Warhol in 2022 in the West End in London. Bettany starred alongside Jeremy Pope in the play The Collaboration, with Pope portraying Jean-Michel Basquiat. The collaboration, and artistic partnership between Warhol, known for his American pop art, and Basquiat, with his neo-expressionist paintings, is one of the most famous in modern art history.

Actor, director and playwright Kwame Kwei-Armah has joined the board of Fifth Season-backed production company The Story Collective.

In the role, Kwei-Armah will bring expertise and mentorship to various projects in development as well as nurturing new ideas to bring to screen.

Kwei-Armah is currently the artistic director for the Young Vic theater in London. Previously he served as artistic director of Baltimore Center Stage in Maryland, where he directed Toni Morrison’s “Jazz” and “One Night in Miami,” which was later adapted into a film starring Kingsley Ben-Adir.

He is set to make his directorial feature debut with upcoming film “The Collaboration,” starring Paul Bettany as Andy Warhol and Jeremy Pope as Jean-Michel Basquiat. Exclusive: Compelling Pictures is coming on to produce and finance the high-concept psychological horror thriller The Blur, written and being directed by emerging director Joe Miale. Denis O’Sullivan and Jeff Kalligheri are producing for Compelling, alongside Scott Carr and Josh Crook. Carr brought the project to Compelling back in 2020 as a pitch and Miale wrote the script.

The film follows a visually-impaired family tormented by a ghost only seen by those who have severe myopia. It introduces a villain named Smudge to the horror pantheon, and will use innovative visual techniques–largely in-camera–to bring the terrifying character to life. Producers cited a 2021 study by the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness estimated that 43 million people worldwide are considered legally blind, while 295 million people worldwide live with moderate-to-severe visual impairment. And also noted the World Health Organization has estimated that approximately 2.2 billion people worldwide have some level of near or distance vision impairment.

Exclusive: While still in post with Compelling Pictures on the Warhol-Basquiat film The Collaboration, based on the play he directed in both its debut London run and its Broadway transfer, Kwame Kwei-Armah has closed a deal to direct Mission Hill, a Boston-set crime thriller that will mark a reteam with the producer-financier.

Based on an original screenplay by Michael McGrale (The Following), developed by Compelling, Mission Hill is based on a real-life homicide case that brought Boston to its knees in 1989. It follows an up-and-coming police officer and a seasoned detective racing against time to bring a suspect in before the city implodes over racial tensions.

Compelling Pictures will finance and produce the film which is aiming for a late 2023 start date, pending the ongoing WGA strike and potential other labor actions from SAG-AFTRA and the DGA.

Producing alongside Compelling is Peter Craig — who’s coming off his first Oscar nomination for his contributions to the screenplay of Top Gun: Maverick — as well as Jay Giannone. Exec producers are Kwei-Armah and McGrale, Steven Garcia for Compelling, Max Goldfarb for Redefine Entertainment, Marina Cappi for Marina Studios Productions, Ori Allon and Sal Monaco for White Lodge Productions, Tanner Beard, Lexie Beard, Janice Beard, Dennis Casali and Joshua Kushner. Two-time Emmy nominee Kim Coleman (Lovecraft Country) is handling the film’s casting.

The project comes from writer-director team Kevin Armento and Jaki Bradley and is billed as “a nightmarish horror about the romantic and psychological warfare waged by our beloved popular entertainment — and also begs the question… are we, the viewers, complicit?”

Melissa Barrera, star of the hugely successful recent Scream reboot, is set to lead the cast of The One, described as an “erotic nightmare” set within the confines on the reality dating show, which Riley Keough is set to produce.

The film, from writer-director duo Kevin Armento and Jaki Bradley, will see Barrera (whose upcoming projects also include Your Monster and The Collaboration) star alongside Nicholas Hoult (The Great, upcoming Nosferatu for Robert Eggers and Clint Eastwood’s Juror #2) and Lana Condor (To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken).

The One follows Taylor (Barrera), who makes a last-ditch effort to find love by becoming a contestant on a reality dating show. For the first time in the 76-year history of the Tony Awards, three Pulitzer Prize-winning original dramas have been nominated in the Best Play category in the same year. Only five of the 17 new plays from the 2022-2023 season made the cut in the extraordinarily competitive race, and three of the five had previously received the prestigious honor of the Pulitzer: James Ijames’ “Fat Ham,” Stephen Adly Guirgis’ “Between Riverside and Crazy,” and Martyna Majok’s “Cost of Living.”

This historic result was not a guarantee. Indeed, according to our final official odds, only two of the plays were anticipated to break through: “Fat Ham,” which ultimately nabbed five nominations, and “Between Riverside and Crazy,” which landed two. “Cost of Living,” which closed back in November, was ranked seventh, but its odds were bolstered by three of our Editors and two of our Experts correctly predicting it to break through.

The 2023 Tony Awards nominations were announced on Tuesday, May 2. Out of all the nominees spread across the 26 categories, a number of them stand out as particularly noteworthy. Read my 31 fascinating facts, stats and trivia for this year’s contenders below.

With 38 productions eligible for this year’s Tony Awards, there were plenty of names missing when nominations were announced on Tuesday morning. Among the most surprising 2023 Tony nominations snubs was “Life of Pi” for Best Play. The production earned nine Olivier Award nominations across the pond, winning Best New Play, Actor (Hiran Abeysekera), Featured Actor, Lighting Design and Set Design. But at the Tonys, it missed out on a Best Play bid and didn’t score a nomination for Abeysekera. The production did perform well in the design categories, though, earning five nominations including for director Max Webster.

With the announcement of the Tony Awards nominations on May 2, we now know the shows and performers in contention for the 76th annual ceremony. The 40 members of the Tony nominating committee recognized 27 of the 38 eligible productions across 26 competitive categories.

A new stage adaptation of the 1959 film “Some Like It Hot” leads all productions with 13 nominations. That tally includes a nomination for the top honor of Best Musical and four bids for its performers, Christian Borle, J. Harrison Ghee, Kevin Del Aguila, and NaTasha Yvette Williams. Three other new musicals are tied for second place with nine nominations: “& Juliet,” “New York, New York,” and “Shucked,” all earning Best Musical bids. The Tony Awards contest for the top honor of Best Play is the most crowded it has been in at least a decade. A whopping 17 new dramatic works will vie for only five slots that recognize the most stellar productions and playwrights on Broadway. This season, the plays in contention hail from renowned dramatists like Tony winners Tom Stoppard for “Leopoldstadt” and David Auburn for “Summer, 1976,” and past nominee Sharr White for “Pictures From Home.” Notably, there are also three winners of the Pulitzer Prize eligible this season: James Ijames’ “Fat Ham,” Stephen Adly Guirgis’ “Between Riverside and Crazy,” and Martyna Majok’s “Cost of Living.” If all three of these works land nominations, the Tonys will set a record for the most Pulitzer winners nominated for Best Play in one year in history.

According to our current combined odds, it is very possible that history will indeed be made this year.

Broadway continued filling seats last week as the annual deep-discount Broadway Week promotion (actually three weeks) came to a close. Total receipts for the 21 productions tallied to 23,064,393, with attendance of 192,323 at 95 of capacity.

Topping the box office roster for the week ending Feb. 12 was, once again, The Phantom of the Opera, selling 99.9 of its seats at the Majestic and grossing a huge 2,425,002 as its April 16 closing date nears. Runner up on the list was Funny Girl, taking in 1,800,112 and filling 96.3 of seats at the August Wilson.

Stellan Bettany, son of actors Jennifer Connelly and Paul Bettany, recently took to Instagram to perform his song “Hardly Awake.”

Bettany has chosen to not follow in the footsteps of his industry-leading parents and is instead pursuing classical composing and songwriting at the New England Conservatory of Music, expecting to graduate in 2025.

He frequently shares performances of his music on his social media platform, receiving praise from his father and friends, including Jeremy Pope, who plays Jean-Michel Basquiat alongside Paul Bettany’s Andy Warhol in The Collaboration, currently performing on Broadway.

Discounts, winter promotions, benefit performances and the absence from the roster of now-closed solid earner The Piano Lesson added up to a slide in Broadway box office for the week ending Feb. 5, down about 9 from the previous week to 23,518,702.

Total attendance was down only 5 through, with the smaller average ticket price (120.29 compared to the previous week’s 124.43) biting into receipts. Nineteen of the 22 shows on the week’s roster reported box office drops, though most shows filled up more than 90 of their seats.

The Tony Awards Administration Committee has announced its first round of eligibility rulings for this Broadway season, determining some of the trickier potential nominees and their respective categories.

Both co-stars of The Collaboration – Paul Bettany and Jeremy Pope – will be considered eligible in the Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play, rather than split up into leading and featured slots. Ohio State Murders, written by Adrienne Kennedy in 1991 and performed regionally but never on Broadway until this season, will be considered a revival in keeping with similar rulings in recent years about Broadway debuts of older shows such as The Boys in The Band.

Perhaps among the more surprising rulings is for Sharon D Clarke, who played Linda Loman opposite Wendell Pierce’s Willy Loman in Miranda Cromwell’s Death of a Salesman revival. Clarke will be eligible as a Featured Actress rather than Leading.

Stellan C. Bettany, the son of Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connelly, is enjoying a family beach vacation and posted some commemorative pics to Instagram with the caption “Beachy times w mom.”

The beach appeared to be some sort of northeast location, as both Jennifer and Paul had posted photos from a Vermont camping trip. It seemed like a great way to end the summer with the whole family.

Stellan appeared in a small role in Paul Bettany’s screenwriting and directorial debut Shelter in 2014, but he seems to be pursuing a career in classical composition and songwriting now.
