The highly-anticipated reboot of Resident Evil from Barbarian director Zach Cregger may have its lead actor, and he's already well-versed in the realm of zombies and horror. Deadline reports that Austin Abrams is in early talks to join the Resident Evil cast. No word on what role he'll be playing, if it will be an established character in the franchise or a new invention from Cregger and co-screenwriter Shay Hatten.

Euphoria actor Austin Abrams has emerged as the choice to star in Sony Pictures’ and Zach Cregger’s reboot of horror action movie Resident Evil.

Cregger, the filmmaker who became part of the horror genre’s new generation thanks for his breakout Barbarian, wrote the script and is directing the feature.

He is readying for the release his follow-up to Barbarian, an ensemble horror piece titled Weapons. Abrams makes up part of the cast, which includes Josh Brolin and Julia Garner. Resident Evil would mark a reunion between the two, should any deal make.

Sony is moving fast on Resident Evil and a summer shoot in Europe is being planned. Cregger is said to already be scouting.

Constantin Film is producing and co-financing the film. Constantin’s Robert Kulzer, Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee (Barbarian,) and Miri Yoon (Weapons) as well as PlayStation Productions are also producing.

Apple’s video streaming business is still firmly in the red, according to a new report.

The Apple TV+ premium subscription service is losing more than $1 billion per year, according to an anonymously sourced report by The Information published Thursday. The tech giant is spending around $4.5 billion on content annually, down from $5 billion in past years, according to the article. Apple TV+ — which features virtually an all-original lineup — has about 45 million subscribers, per the report.

Reps for Apple did not respond to a request for comment.

Of course, $1 billion in annual losses are practically a rounding error for Apple in the context of its overall business, which is mostly fueled by iPhone sales. Apple generated $391 billion in revenue and posted a net profit of $93.7 billion for its fiscal year ended in September 2024.

Streaming is hard, and for most companies that aren’t Netflix, launching your own SVOD streaming service is a difficult way of earning a profit. So it should be no surprise that Apple TV+ isn’t among the profitable streamers either.

A report in The Information on Thursday said that Apple TV+ loses $1 billion on streaming annually, and it’s doing that despite 45 million subscribers. Those are two numbers that, despite launching in 2019, have never been released publicly by Apple. That’s because Apple TV+ is housed within Apple Services, a division of Apple that also includes Apple Music, Apple Fitness, Apple News+, Apple Arcade, Apple Books, and iCloud.

Per the company’s most recent earnings, the three months ending in January saw Apple bring in $124.3 billion in revenue, $26.3 billion of which came from Services, a record for the division. That’s just for one quarter. For the year, Services brought in more than $96 billion.

Streamers in New Zealand who use Amazon’s Prime Video to watch films and TV shows can now add a subscription to Apple TV Plus through that platform.

Starting this week, Apple TV Plus (stylized as Apple TV+) debuted on Prime Video Channels in the country at a price point of Nz $15 per month (around U.S. $8.75 per month).

Brian Duffield, the director of No One Will Save You and Spontaneous, has set his sights on a lead actor for his next project. Duffield is set to adapt Daniel Kraus’ novel Whalefall, and Austin Abrams, who was last seen alongside George Clooney and Brad Pitt in the thriller Wolfs, is set to star, as reported by Deadline.

What could a novel titled Whalefall be about, I hear you asking. According to Deadline, the original novel has been described as a mix of The Martian and 127 Hours, which have also been successfully adapted into excellent films. Kraus’ novel does include a similar beat-the-clock narrative, but a much wilder premise.

Whalefall follows scuba diving teenager Jay, who is looking for his father’s remains at the bottom of an ocean.

“It’s like we’re all too old to do the jobs we used to be able to do,” Clooney said.

Clooney previously spoke of the project in an interview with Uproxx back in December 2023, where he compared the script to the 1979 comedy “Going in Style,” starring George Burns, Art Carney, and Lee Strasberg. At the Los Angeles premiere of “Wolfs” back in September 2024, he also told E! News that he’d gotten the rest of the old team on board to return.

“We have a really good script,” said Clooney. “Everyone’s read it and ready to do it.

P. Scott Sakamoto earned the Camera Operator of the Year award in the film category for his work on A Complete Unknown, a Bob Dylan biopic that has also drawn attention from the American Society of Cinematographers.

In the television segment, Yellowstone was honored when Scott Dropkin received the top award for his work on the episode “Life is a Promise.” Dropkin’s achievement was further highlighted by the contributions of his team, including Abby Linne as the “B” camera operator and Jed Seus as the “C” operator.

In addition to these winners, the event showcased a competitive field of nominees.
