The Best Man opens with a rescue mission as a group of mercenaries rescue an American woman kidnapped in Mexico. Despite being much better equipped than the kidnappers they take casualties including Axel who take a bullet to the skull and is left for dead. A year later that woman, Brook, is marrying Cal, one of the men who saved her. His cousin Bradley is the best man and another of the crew, Anders is also going to be there.
Brook’s father has rented a huge, remote resort for the ceremony, but they may have wished they chose a more urban location when a team of heavily armed wedding crashers show up.

Jeff Nichols’ ‘Mud’ is ‘no ordinary movie’ (photo: Matthew McConaughey in ‘Mud’) Ostensibly, writer-director Jeff Nichols’ Mud is about the titular character, played by Matthew McConaughey, who’s on the run from the law and the family of a man he killed for love of a woman, Juniper, played by a bedraggled Reese Witherspoon. That’s a fine, if ordinary, foundation for a thriller — though this is no ordinary movie by any stretch. In fact, Mud isn’t even about the character Mud; instead, it’s a coming-of-age story that’s part mystery, fable, and thriller. Beneath it all lies a love story — indeed, several love stories, all tied together through the heart of a young boy called Ellis (The Tree of Life‘s Tye Sheridan in an accomplished performance): a witness to the death of love in his family, Ellis feels it in his heart and is willing to do anything,...

In the independent drama Bloodworth, E.F. Bloodworth (Kris Kristofferson) returns home to Tennessee to find the wife he walked out on (Frances Conroy) withered and faded, and his three sons – Warren (Val Kilmer), Boyd (Dwight Yoakam) and Brady (W. Earl Brown) – grown and soured by years of anger. Only Fleming (Reece Thompson), the old man’s grandson, treats him with the respect his age commands, and sees past all the hatred to realize the way it can poison a man’s soul. At the film’s press day, actor/screenwriter/producer W. Earl Brown talked about the roller coaster of getting financing for the film, having Kris Kristofferson sign on for the lead role, getting to meet one of his heroes and having it live up to the expectation, and how cathartic it can be to play a character that was so angry. He also talked about what he...

As she says later in our interview, Hilary Duff likes a good challenge. The number of former child and teen stars who manage to sustain their success into their twenties, as Duff undeniably has, are few enough already, but even rarer are those who then develop into serious adult actors. Title: Bloodworth Director: Shane Dax Taylor Starring: Val Kilmer, Reece Thompson, Hilary Duff, Kris Kristofferson, Dwight Yoakam, W. Earl Brown, Frances Conroy, Hilarie Burton With its just-so production design, characterized chiefly by rust, and a gallery of weathered and otherwise stunted characters fumbling toward some vaguely defined senses of purpose or peace, “Bloodworth”, based on William Gay’s novel “Provinces of Night”, slots comfortably in the cinematic canon of Southern Gothic, wherein everything and everyone is dadgum country-fied, and, well, ain’t that interesting and grand? This isn’t to say that the film, a drama about the long shadows of alcoholism, familial neglect and demons unaddressed, is a terrible or hokey thing,...

In the independent drama Bloodworth, former Disney star Hilary Duff proves she has the acting chops, taking on the role of Raven, a young woman from another town that gives Fleming Bloodworth (Reece Thompson) the courage to reject his family curse and see past all the hatred and anger that has destroyed his family. Herself the daughter of an alcoholic prostitute (Sheila Kelley), Raven yearns for another way of life, much like aspiring writer Fleming, and the two see a way to find that in each other. At the film’s press day, actress Hilary Duff talked about the appeal of a role like this, the challenge of identifying with a character like Raven, how awkward it was to play a pregnant girl, and how she hopes that this film will show people that, against all odds, you can change your life path for the better. Wait, is that Jeff Bridges in Crazy Heart? Nope, it’s Kris Kristofferson as E.F. Bloodworth, a soft-spoken musician returning home years after abandoning his family. But it would be easy to get Bloodworth confused with the Oscar-nominated 2009 film. After all, T. Bone Burnett, who won the Academy Award in 2010 for Best Original Song for Crazy Heart’s “The Weary Kind,” produces the music in Bloodworth. Also along for the Bloodworth ride: Val Kilmer, Frances Conroy, and Hilary Duff. See the trailer embedded after the jump. As EW’s Adam B. Vary says, it’s best served up with a glass of moonshine.

I thought I'd share a few of my adventures at the Nashville Film Festival whilst practicing on my wacom tablet -- so hard to get the hang of this, the wacom not the Nashville. (I've been to the Nashville Festival a couple of times so I think I have the hang of it now.) I arrived in my Herzog tee -- I always live in mortal fear that some Herzog freak will grill me about good ol' Werner since I probably don't know as much about him as I should given the human advertisement aspects of t-shirt wearing. My favorites are Grizzly Man and Aguirre the Wrath of God and Nosferatu but Werner is prolific so I can't say I've seen everything.
The jurors and guests of the festival stay in downtown Nashville where you can get to the touristy parts quick but the festival is actually at a multiplex called Regal Green Hill.

I'm packing up and heading out to the Nashville Film Festival which is becoming something of an annual jaunt for me. The opening night film is Bloodworth starring this year's career achievement honoree Kris Kristofferson.
I'm on the jury for the narrative competition with actor Dan Butler (Frasier, Crazy Stupid Love) and critic Joe Leydon. Last year I had the pleasure of attending an event honoring composer Carter Burwell but this year I have to miss the Gustavo Santaoalla celebration, damnit. (Since the festival is in Music City, they wisely opt to honor composers each year).
I'll send you little bits from the festival and meanwhile the usual contributors will be on hand here to keep you entertained!
Have you ever been to Nashville? A few years back when I went for the first time I took a trip to the Parthenon and i'd never wanted to know how to play guitar worse.

In the four years since Canadian actor Reece Thompson starred in Jeffrey Blitz's crowd-pleasing Sundance entry Rocket Science, he's graduated from stuttering his way through a high school debate tourney to romancing Kat Dennings (in the forthcoming May indie Daydream Nation) and knocking up Hilary Duff (in the Tba indie Bloodworth). This April he joins forces with rising star Michael Angarano (Red State, Homework) to play Marshall, a straight-laced emotional cripple who accompanies best friend Sam (Angarano) on a weekend trip to win back the older woman of his dreams (Uma Thurman) in Max Winkler's offbeat feature debut, Ceremony.

The 40 years have been hard on everyone: Julia has withered to an emotionally and physically fragile skeleton; Warren (Val Kilmer) has evolved into an ego-maniacal womanizing alcoholic; Boyd (Dwight Yoakam) lives in a constant state of depression and anger after being ditched by his wife; and Brady (W. Earl Brown) relies on his bible and witchcraft to protect his mother. Julia and her three sons share a common hatred and resentment for E.

Hilary Duff can have extra cupcake frosting and whatever kind of sprinkles she wants today, as it's her birthday. The actress and singer is now 23 years old, and if that seems especially young, it's because Duff has been an active participant in pop culture since the premiere of the Disney Channel original series "Lizzie McGuire" in 2001 (when she was only 13). Since then, she has established herself as a top-shelf actress (starring in hits like "A Cinderella Story," "Cheaper by the Dozen" and "Raise Your Voice") and singer (having logged hits like "So Yesterday" and "Come Clean," which also served as the theme song to the hit MTV show "Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County").
Though she hasn't released new music since 2007's Dignity (a much more mature sounding album that incorporated elements of rock, hip-hop and dance music and dealt with the end of her relationship with Joel Madden as...

The search of new love interest for Peter Parker in "Spider-Man" reboot has included the name of Hilary Duff. The "Lizzie McGuire" star is said auditioning for the role after a script for the movie has reportedly been found in her house.
The Globe and Mail recently visited Duff and her husband Mike Comrie's house for an interview. There, the publication noticed "a script marked 'Spider-Man' sits on the table, with lines for a character simply called 'girl' highlighted in yellow."
While The Globe and Mail linked the finding of the script to the role of Spider-Man's love interest, Cinema Blend suggested that the role offered to Duff might be a small or cameo one.
Previously, Lindsay Lohan was also said eying the role of Mary Jane who was portrayed by Kirsten Dunst in "Spider-Man" trilogy. However, another report mentioned that the red-haired female character would...
