Fremantle is readying to unleash ‘Sandokan’ onto industry insiders during next week’s London TV Screenings.

“It’s simply a great epic adventure, based on a known IP. It’s ‘Poldark’ meets ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’,” enthuses CEO Commercial and International Jens Richter, promising action, adventure and some good old-fashioned pirating.

Starring Can Yaman (“Daydreamer”), Ed Westwick (“Gossip Girl”) and John Hannah (“Spartacus: Blood and Sand”), it’s based on the series of novels by Emilio Salgari and produced by Fremantle’s Italian content powerhouse Lux Vide. Set in the mid-1800s, it heads to a place inhabited by native Dayak tribes yet dominated by British law. Sandokan is used to fighting for his survival, but one thing catches him by surprise: love.

“There’s a portion of romance,” admits Richter. With each episode set in a different environment, “Sandokan” will “fit the needs of the market perfectly,” he adds.

Lionsgate has released its third quarter financial results after the spinoff of the media giant’s studio business into a separately traded stock.

The studio, led by CEO Jon Feltheimer, posted a sharply narrowed net loss attributable to shareholders at $21.9 million, compared to a year-earlier loss at $107.4 million when Lionsgate at the time reported on the impact of the earlier Hollywood writers and actors strikes on its content production and release pipeline.

During the latest quarter to Dec. 31, 2024, overall revenue fell to $970.5 million, against $975.1 million in the same period of last year. That blew past an analyst estimate for $922 million in overall third quarter revenues by $48 million.

Amidst the pageantry and savagery of Gladiator was the political intrigue that took place in the corridors of power and the struggle of its main protagonist against insurmountable odds, as he not only fights on the floor of the Colosseum but wages a crusade against the ruling powers of the Roman Empire. While entertaining, Scott’s big-budget Hollywood epic can trace much of its premise to Spartacus.

Released in 1960 and directed by Stanley Kubrick, Spartacus was one of many large-scale period pieces prominent in Hollywood at the time. Featuring an all-star cast that included Kirk Douglas, Laurence Olivier, Charles Laughton, Peter Ustinov, and Tony Curtis, the film is based on the real-life slave revolt that shook Rome to its foundations in the waning days of the republic.

I don’t know about you guys, but I never get enough of historical fiction dramas and epic action series and films. Not only do they present us with specific depictions and reimaginings of key moments throughout history, but they also introduce us to the fascinating people—real and imagined—who endured such brutal times. Joan Plowright, the distinguished actress of the post-war British stage whose considerable skill as a performer was at times eclipsed by her fame as the third and last wife of Laurence Olivier, has died. She was 95.

Plowright died on Jan. 16 surrounded by family in her native U.K. A statement from the family released on Friday to the BBC said: “It is with great sadness that the family of Dame Joan Plowright, the Lady Olivier, inform you that she passed away peacefully on January 16 2025 surrounded by her family at Denville Hall aged 95.”

Starz is expanding its Spartacus franchise and bringing Nick Tarabay back as Ashur in a new spinoff. The 10-episode series, House of Ashur, was first announced in November 2023 as “a history-bending, erotic, thrilling, roller-coaster experience that builds on everything that made the original series a colossal hit.” Spartacus creator, writer, and executive producer Steven S. On Wednesday, January 15, Starz released the first-look teaser trailer for “Spartacus: House of Ashur,” a sequel to its original three-season “Spartacus” series, which started in 2010 with “Spartacus: Blood and Sand,” continued with “Spartacus: Vengeance,” and concluded in 2013 with “Spartacus: War of the Damned.” Between “Blood and Sand” and “Vengeance,” Starz made a six-episode miniseries “Spartacus: Gods of the Arena.”

(Spartacus, by the way, is a real historical figure. He was a Thracian gladiator and one of the escaped slaves who led an uprising against the Roman Republic in the early first century BC. Andy Whitfield played Spartacus for the first season and provided a brief voiceover for its prequel. At the time, he was battling stage IV non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Whitfield died in 2011; Liam McIntyre took over the role in Seasons 2 and 3. Kirk Douglas famously played Spartacus in Stanley Kubrick’s 1960 film.)

As one of the biggest sword & sandal epics of the decade, Gladiator II, is set to conclude its theatrical run soon after arriving on digital several weeks ago, another upcoming project from a famous historical property has unveiled the next chapter in its story. Starz has released the first look at Spartacus: House of Ashur, the series that will see Nick Tarabay reprise his role as Ashur from the original Spartacus series that ran from 2010-2013, and ask, “What if he hadn’t died on Mount Vesuvius?” The upcoming original series will also see House of the Dragon and Lord of the Rings veteran Graham McTavish play Korris, Ashur’s Doctore, and will also feature the debut of Tenika Davis, a fierce gladiatrix set to enter the arena and compete with the most deadly warriors.

What if Ashur hadn’t died on Mount Vesuvius at the end of Spartacus: Vengeance? That’s one of the questions Starz’s new sequel series Spartacus: House of Ashur will aim to answer, with Nick Tarabay reprising his role as the titular Syrian slave. Starz has dropped the first teaser for the sequel series “Spartacus: House of Ashur.”

The teaser sets up a “new era” of combat in the arena with plenty of blood and sand to go around. The teaser also revealed that the show will launch this fall though a specific premiere date has yet to be announced.

“House of Ashur” was greenlit at Starz in November 2023, with the show having first reported to be in development in February of that year. The official description for the series states that it poses the question “What if Ashur (Nick Tarabay), hadn’t died on Mount Vesuvius at the end of ‘Spartacus: Vengeance?’ And what if he had been gifted the gladiator school once owned by Batiatus in return for aiding the Romans in killing Spartacus and putting an end to the slave rebellion?”
