I think that people overlook the pilot of Community when they first watch the show because it becomes so much bigger than the low-concept first episode. The first season overall I think could be considered almost an entirely different show compared tp the other seasons, but I think that's what makes it so great.
The pilot checks all the boxes. It introduces our characters (some better than others), sets the scene, and once the plot is established and we finally reach the beloved study room, things really begin to set into motion. Characters play off each other and instantly create chaos, started of course by the titular Jeffery Winger. While it is a little rough around the edges; for example, the exposition is a little rough, some characters are focused on more than others leaving others almost ignored all together, and almost every character is a shell of their future selves, although it does demonstrate the growth that each character goes through throughout the show's 6 seasons, whether for good or for worse.
Even if this isn't the best episode of Community, I think it's still a good episode of tv, which is why I've given it an 8/10.
(It should be noted that I have seen this episode at least 15 times and can almost perfectly recite the script from memory, and Ian Duncan is one of my favourite and he gets a lot of screentime (compared to other episodes) in this episode, so I might be a little biased, but I digress)
