The official website for the Space Battleship Yamato remake anime series announced today that the next fourth chapter of its latest installment, Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 3199 , will start theatrical screenings in Japan on October 10, 2025 . The title of the fourth of the new seven-chapter series (consisting of 26 episodes) is "Mizuiro no Sasha" ("Light Blue Sasha"). Bandai Namco Filmworks just gave us a fresh look at Gunjō no Asteroid (Ultramarine Asteroid), the third movie in the Yamato yo Towa ni: Rebel 3199 (Be Forever Yamato: Rebel 3199) series. This is the latest entry in the ongoing Space Battleship Yamato remakes.

A special Blu-ray edition of the film will launch on April 11, the same day it hits theaters. If you’re willing to wait, regular Blu-ray and DVD versions will be available on June 25.

This isn’t just a trilogy—there are seven movies planned for the full story. Crunchyroll is streaming the project under the name Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 3199.

Hideaki Anno, creator of the iconic Neon Genesis Evangelion anime, has announced that he will be in charge of a new film installment for Leiji Matsumoto's classic sci-fi franchise, Space Battleship Yamato. While attending Yamato's 50th anniversary event, the critically acclaimed director laid bare his appreciation for the original 1974 TV series and how it inspires him as an animator.

Per Comic Natalie, Anno is the main organizer of Space Battleship Yamato's 50th Anniversary Project -- a commemorative initiative that includes several different events and projects. On Oct. 6, Anno attended the 50th anniversary screening of Yamato's debut anime episode. He was accompanied by Yutaka Izubuchi, General Director of the Space Battleship Yamato 2199 film adaptation, and Ryusuke Hikawa, an anime and special effects researcher who also worked on the film. While engaging in a talk with his fellow creators, Anno recounts his initial experiences with the original series.

Hideaki Anno announced that his company, Khara Inc., has secured the rights to produce a new anime film for the Space Battleship Yamato series.

The announcement was made during the anime’s 50th anniversary screening event held in Tokyo on Oct 6, 2024.

During the event, Anno disclosed that Khara had secured the production rights from Voyager Holdings, which oversees the original series, and received permission to use the copyright from Tohokushinsha Film Corporation.

“This time, Khara Inc. was granted the rights by Voyager Holdings, represented by President Shoji Nishizaki, to create a new animated work based on ‘Space Battleship Yamato.’ At the same time, we obtained permission to use the copyright from Tohokushinsha Film Corporation.“

Speaking at the event, Anno expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “With this, I can now make a new Space Battleship Yamato work.“

The Tokyo International Film Festival has unveiled a competition section with as many Chinese titles as Japanese for its 37th edition.

Announced on Wednesday the festival’s full lineup runs to a compact 110 films, culled from a huge 2,023 applications, and functions partly as discovery event, partly as a Japanese showcase and also as best-of the year international art house compendium.

The 15-title competition includes Midi Z’s “The Unseen Sister,” “Big World,” by Yang Lina and “My Friend An Delie,” by Dong Zijian from China. Adding rising star Hong Kong director Philip Yung’s “Papa” and Huang Xi’s Sylvia Chang-starring “Daughter’s Daughter,” fresh from Toronto, and the competition will resound to Chinese accents. Gundam legend Yoshikazu Yasuhiko, the character designer and animation director for the original 1979 Mobile Suit Gundam anime series and several successive anime, says it was the talent of Neon Genesis Evangelion's Hideaki Anno and his team that convinced him that manga was the better route for him.

In a recent public comment, the anime association Nafca (Nippon Anime & Film Culture Association) has said that any future with AI must come with high transparency over whose works are used in its training and output. The organization adds that even when they would be compensated, creators require high control over their copyrighted material to avoid AI "monsters" that may violate their intentions.
