The 1980s was a tubular time in history. Everyone remembers Sony Walkman cassette players, bright neon-colored clothes, VHS movies, and MTV music videos. Another thing this decade is fondly remembered for is the many different cartoons that aired. Some were shown every day of the week, while kids had to wait anxiously every Saturday morning to watch other cartoons while chomping down on their favorite sugar-infused cereal and milk. This is one of the decades known for creating some of the best and most missed cartoons that ever aired on TV.

Chris Pratt's return to the animation genre is proving just as much of a streaming success as theatrical one as The Garfield Movie is already becoming a Netflix hit. The movie serves as a reboot of the franchise based on Jim Davis' beloved comic strip, with Pratt taking over the role from Bill Murray in the live-action/CGI hybrid movies. Following the titular cat as he's reunited with his long-lost father and goes on an adventure with him and Odie, The Garfield Movie was poorly received by critics, but generally embraced by audiences, grossing over $257 million against its $60 million production budget.
Just shy of four months after making its theatrical debut, The Garfield Movie premiered on Netflix as part of the streamer's exclusive rights deal with Sony, and it's already proving to be a hit for both parties. At the time of writing, the movie is maintaining the No.

Voice casting for Jon in Garfield adaptations sparks debates, but Jon's character adds flavor to the projects. Various actors, such as Huge, Kenyon, Meyer, and Wingert, have portrayed Jon Arbuckle in different Garfield adaptations. Nicholas Hoult takes on the role of Jon in The Garfield Movie, following a long line of actors who have brought the character to life.
Over the years of Garfields existence, the character of Jon has gone through multiple iterations. First appearing in the Garfield comic strip, Jon Arbuckle is the bumbling owner of the titular cat. Throughout the series, Jon moans and groans as his lasagna-loving, lazy feline gets into various antics, all the while adoring the cat despite himself. In adaptations, Jon has gotten screen time through multiple projects. His appearances began in a 1980 episode of The Fantastic Funnies, which marked the first television appearance of Garfield. The lasagna-obsessed feline with a near-pathological aversion to Mondays, who first came into popular consciousness in the late ‘70s as a comic strip, is a diluted version of himself in “The Garfield Movie.” Not only is his suave apathy mostly replaced by an excessive excitedness with only sporadic glimpses of his endearingly negative qualities, but this Garfield jumps off trains, stages a heist, and is subjected to trite physical comedy by way of numerous predictable action sequences. The ordeal mimics a rehashed plot from the dull “The Secret Life of Pets” franchise with Garfield forcefully plugged in.
All of these choices amount to a production that fundamentally misunderstands Garfield’s appeal as a lovingly indifferent, self-centered glutton whose greatest aspiration is to do nothing and have all his needs catered to him. It’s a Garfield movie for audiences who have never heard of Garfield, which reads as an attempt...

Chris Pratt embodies the world’s most sarcastic yet endearing orange feline in the trailer for “The Garfield Movie,” premiering in theaters on May 24, 2024.
The new animated feature introduces new characters to comic creator Jim Davis’ universe, including Samuel L. Jackson as Vic, Garfield’s father. Both Pratt and Jackson have been honing their voice acting chops, with Jackson playing another animated cat in “Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank” and Pratt portraying Mario in “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.”
In the trailer for “The Garfield Movie,” Pratt’s lovable fat cat explains how he adopted his owner, John. Before he dives into a tray of lasagna, he warns the audience, “I apologize in advance. The eating you’re about to see will not be pretty. And if you have young children, this would be a good time for them to leave the room.”

It’s last call for a number of films and TV shows leaving Netflix in June. Director Frank Darabont’s underrated Stephen King adaptation “The Mist” exits on June 21, while the end of the month brings the exits of “Jerry Maguire,” “Puss in Boots,” “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days,” a pair of “Resident Evil” movies and Brad Pitt’s pretty-ok zombie actioner “World War Z.”
Also departing on June 30 is the first two seasons of “Chappelle’s Show.”
All-in-all, however, it’s not a robust list so rest easy knowing an exodus isn’t coming to Netflix. This month at least.

While none of Netflix's significant hitters are leaving the streamer this month, there are still a few gems that will be missed. Puss in Boots will be making a grand exit at the end of the month, alongside the Brad Pitt-led zombie thriller, World War Z. That's not the only horror adjacent film leaving Netflix this month. Resident Evil: Afterlife and Resident Evil: Apocalypse will both be departing as well. On the television side of things, The Garfield Show, Shooter, and Chappelle's Show are being removed. The world’s most famous fat cat is coming to theaters soon. “Garfield,” an animated film starring Chris Pratt as the famous Jim Davis comic strip character, will premiere in theaters Feb. 16, 2024.
In addition to Pratt, the film will also star Samuel L. Jackson as a brand-new character to the Garfield universe, Vic, who is the father of the orange feline. The plot that will bring Garfield’s father back into his life remains under wraps. Although no other cast members have been announced, the film will presumably feature classic characters from the franchise, including his owner Jon Arbuckle and dim-witted puppy Odie.
The animated movie represents the latest big screen outing for the iconic lasagna-loving misanthrope. Bill Murray famously voiced the character in two live-action and CGI-hybrid films, 2004’s “Garfield: The Movie” and its 2006 sequel “Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties.” The two films received largely negative reviews, but were both commercially successful.

November is among the least respected months on the calendar. Falling between objectively the two best holidays, November is usually all about recovering from the spookies of Halloween while getting ready for the good vibes the holiday season. For its new releases of November 2020, Netflix has decided to just go ahead and get Christmas over with.
Netflix has already released a list of all its holiday offerings for November and December, and it’s those holiday offerings that take the most prominence this month. The biggest project of all of these is undoubtedly The Christmas Chronicles 2, which premieres on Nov. 25. In this holiday sequel, Kurt Russell reprises his role as Hot Santa Claus who must save the season once again.
On the non-holiday side of things, Netflix’s Emmy-winning series The Crown returns for season 4 on Nov. 15. And speaking of things that desperately want to win awards, Ron Howard...

Though we’re now beginning to see life starting to return to at least some sense of normality, a lot of people are still spending much more time at home than usual thanks to the Coronavirus pandemic, and that probably won’t change for a while yet. As such, streaming services are more popular than ever now and thankfully, all of the major players have been delivering the goods when it comes to adding new content.
Of course, Netflix are still the leaders and each and every month they bring us a healthy helping of fresh material that ensures subscribers are kept entertained at all times. Force of Evil
Written by Abraham Polonsky and Ira Wolfert
Directed by Abraham Polonsky
U.S.A., 1948
Joe Morse (John Garfield) finds himself in a professionally precarious, if certainly lucrative, position. As one of New York’s top lawyers, he represents Ben Tucker (Roy Roberts), the city’s top dog in the racket numbers game. His plush office and impressive wealth are due to impressive commissions earned via Tucker, the latter whom, through Joe’s tireless efforts, has established himself as legitimately as possible. One of the smaller ‘banks’ that is soon to come under Tucker’s reign following the 4th of July rigged horse race is that belonging to Joe’s estranged brother, Leo (Thomas Gomez). The big race passes, leaving Manhattan’s smaller rackets broke, consequently forcing them to comply and join Tucker. Joe strives to sweeten the deal as much as possible for Leo, but differences of...

I recently had the privilege to pose a number of questions to the inimitable Frank Welker. While you may not know his name, you should know his voice. In his continuing 45-year acting/voice-acting career, Welker's voice has brought Scooby-Doo's Fred Jones, Transformer's Megatron and countless other characters to life. Welker is still going strong, voicing multiple characters in Transformers Prime, the title role in The Garfield Show, plus video games, movie work and more. In this recent interview with Welker, he talked about the changing landscape of the voice acting world over the years, how much time he spends in the studio, which voices give him the most trouble and which roles he'd like to see revisited. He also commented on the recent remarks by Hugo Weaving, who voiced Megatron in Michael Bay's Transformers movies. Welker also reflects on his long-time working relationship with Peter Cullen, the on-going voice of Optimus Prime.

Remember back in the day when Garfield and his friends went on zany and fun-filled adventures? It was a simpler time when cartoons offered something back then few cartoons today provide, entertainment. Jim Davis’ quirky orange lasagna-loving feline was the star of a celebrated comic strip and a cool animated series. Unfortunately, Garfield’s awesomeness ended in the early 2000s when a CG/live-action film ruined the famous cat’s name and even further damage to the character was done by a computer-animated series called The Garfield Show. A special holiday-themed DVD is now out of this disaster of a show and aren’t we lucky.

Sunday July 15th is the last day of Comic-Con 2012, and most of us will be completely worn out looking like Spider-Man in the image above. Chances are he's asleep under that mask. Sunday has always been a cool down day for us, we kind of just try to relax a little bit more and enjoy it. That doesn't mean their isn't anything to see or do though!
We've got a Fringe screening and Q&A, Doctor Who, Buffy the Vampire Slayer 20th Anniversary, Sons of Anarchy, the annual Buffy the Vampire Slayer musical screening, and more! I've always wanted to go the Buffy musical sing-a-long, but am usually trying to leave San Diego before it starts.
Just a little reminder, we will be having our annual GeekTyrant meet up this year to meet our readers, which is something we always enjoy doing! That will take place on Wednesday night, and...

ABC’s General Hospital leads the way with 23 nominations for Daytime Emmy Awards.
The television academy announced Wednesday that the venerable soap opera will compete with NBC’s Days of Our Lives, CBS’ The Young and the Restless and the canceled All My Children of ABC for best daytime drama. NBC’s The Bold and the Beautiful has won the trophy three years in a row but wasn’t nominated this year.
Other repeat winners are possible, though: Ben Bailey of Cash Cab was nominated for best game show host and Dr. Mehmet Oz as best talk show host.

Garfield has been given an ongoing comic series by Boom! Studios. Mark Evanier is to write the title under the publisher's Kaboom! imprint, with artwork provided by Gary Barker. "Garfield embodies qualities that we all see in so many people around us - and too often in ourselves. He's lazy. He overeats. He's enormously self-obsessed, Evanier told Cbr. "Everyone either identifies with him or with all the other folks in his world who have to put up with him." Evanier is no stranger to Garfield, having written the first cartoon series and served (more)...

Here’s a challenge: watch a 3D CGI rendered cartoon that has either weekly or daily episodes and try to determine whether it’s the writing or the animation that holds the show back from proceeding at the same pace and quality as other 2D cartoons. For an example, compare the current 3D CGI version of The Garfield Show against the 90s 2D version or, for that matter, any current cartoon being rendered in 2D. In most cases, and especially the case of this 3D The Garfield Show, it seems like the cadence of dialogue slows down because the cost of rendering enough frames to make the dialogue go quickly is too high. Of course, it could be just the opposite problem: the writers are lousy at their job and don’t write enough content per episode to fill enough time and consequently the CGI animation slows itself down to keep pace.

Inspired by the announcement that an adaptation of 80s coin-op Rampage is in the works, here’s a list of ten other 80s videogames we’d like to see in cinemas…
If the news we brought to you on Friday is to be believed, we could soon see a big-screen adaptation of 80s arcade machine Rampage before too long. And with recent years seeing Hollywood take inspiration from such disparate properties as Battleship (out next year), Stretch Armstrong and Asteroids, it seems that the dusty arcades of yesteryear are becoming as inspiring as old board games and half-forgotten toys.
With this in mind, we’ve dredged through the history of the 80s golden age of coin-ops to bring you a few of our own adaptation concepts. Do bear in mind that some of these ideas are better than others, so if you’ve suggestions of your own, feel free to...

Comic-Con International has released the full schedule for Sunday July 24th for San Diego Comic-Con 2011. This is the final day of the convention. Sunday is known as Kids day and is usually the slowest of all the days, there are a few surprises though. In all my years of going to Comic-Con I've never been to a panel in Hal H. Usually nothing is happening in Hall H on Sunday, this year there are a few TV programs going on in Hall H such a as Glee, Supernatural, Doctor Who, The Cleveland Show, Sons of Anarchy, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and this year Buffy the Musical will be in the great Hall as well. I've never been to the Buffy Musical event, and I think I finally want to go this year. A couple of other things worth noting are a one on one panel with Nathan Fillion, and Max Brooks talks about zombies.

Growing up, I looked forward to the Garfield comic strip featured in the Sunday paper funnies each weekend. Garfield, a large orange tabby cat with an attitude problem and a massive appetite, bore a striking resemblance to my own beloved pet at the time, and the interactions between him, his hapless owner Jon, and the adorably stupid dog Odie were greatly entertaining. They lived relatively mundane lives, but creator Jim Davis inserted a healthy dose of absurdity and humor into even those everyday situations. However, I have had very little interest in the live-action adaptations of the cartoon, with Garfield voiced by Bill Murray; as much as I love both Murray and Garfield, something about those movies just seems indefinably wrong. However, I was eager to give the animated versions of these characters a shot in a nostalgic attempt to relive that part of my childhood.

There has been no shortage of cartoon cats in the last 100 years. Whether in comic strips or animated form, cartoon cats have been a traditional part of our culture for decades. It started with Felix the Cat in 1919. Felix became the first cartoon character to cross over into the mainstream and grew to be a pop culture phenomenon. Many cats have made their mark in cartoons since Felix. Sylvester, Tom, Mr. Jinx, Top Cat, Heathcliff and a host of other cartoon felines have made us laugh over the years. In 1978, we were introduced to another cat who would go on to become one of the most popular ever; created by Jim Davis, Garfield appeared in his first comic strip in June of that year and he's been going strong ever since.
