Another SXSW Film Festival has drawn to a close, and with it comes our final dispatch from this year’s insanely packed fest for genre premieres and anticipated titles.
Among the fest’s highlights this year were Babak Anvari’s Hallow Road, an inventive genre-bender that begins as a road thriller before slyly morphing into something else entirely. The high concept haunted house movie Good Boy will make you fall hard for one of the best dog actors to come along in a while, while The Surrender presents grief through a visceral, violent lens.
As for headliners, directors Christopher Landon and Eli Craig delivered festival crowd pleasers with Drop and Clown in a Cornfield respectively, while Death of a Unicorn‘s sense of humor proved more divisive.

SXSW Review: The True Beauty of Being Bitten by a Tick is a Fascinating DIY Bergman-Esque Experiment
Falling somewhere between a horror film and dark comedy about wellness crazes, The True Beauty of Being Bitten by a Tick is, like director Pete Ohs’ previous Jethica, a film that suggests watching a play within a movie. Both features are difficult to discuss without spoilers––they seem to operate on a wavelength beyond genre boxes.
It might help to know the creative process going in. Tick was made collaboratively by its main cast: as Ohs explained during the SXSW premiere, they isolated on location at a country home where they would write three scenes at a time, film and analyze said scenes, and then move forward. The result is a kind of mumblecore version of an Ingmar Bergman film that feels both loose and heavily controlled. But if you’re not on the film’s wavelength it may feel like a disjointed mess. Like the wellness cures offered by...

Life is rough. It can often feel like we’re each living in our own little horror story, with the mounting pressures of the day-to-day and the exhaustion of the world around us. We try to find ways to alleviate these daily pains, but these anxieties frequently take the wheel of our lives. The True Beauty of Being Bitten by a Tick gets into that claustrophobic nature of life, the fear that we can’t shake, and the attempt to get to a place without those types of pressure. Director Pete Ohs (2022’s Jethica) even starts his latest film with a quote from Baz Luhrmann’s Strictly Ballroom: “A life lived in fear is a life half-lived.” That constant burden is a compelling feeling to center a film around, but The True Beauty of Being Bitten by a Tick loses both steam in this exploration and focuses more on the strange than this sentiment.

Micro-budget American indie filmmaker Pete Ohs really doesn’t miss a beat. When he’s not directing—keeping up a steady pace with Youngstown (2021), Jethica (2022) and Love and Work (2024) — he might be on the editing dock with (e.g. Slave Play. Not a Movie. A Play.). And when he’s not in those functions, he is serving as a cinematographer — look out for Albert Birney’s Obex, set to release in 2025. Now comes word that Erupcja (which was recently selected to participate in this year’s U.S.in Progress in Wroclaw) had a bitr more mustard on it. Players include Lena Góra (Roving Woman), Will Madden and two artists now firmly getting into the acting game in playwright Jeremy O.…...

As ‘Brat’ summer raged, Charli Xcx snuck away to Poland for a couple weeks in August to make a secret movie with playwright and actor Jeremy O. Harris and filmmaker Pete Ohs.
The film’s title “Erupcja” is the Polish word for “eruption” and refers to, of course, the type of violent explosion of molten rock that comes from a volcano, but also any sudden release of pressure or tension. The story centers on two women with a combustible relationship — one woman is Polish and the other, named Bethany (Charli Xcx) is visiting the country. Rounding out the lead ensemble are Harris and Will Madden (who has become something of a muse for Ohs; this is their fourth collaboration as actor and director).
“Erupcja” director Pete Ohs and actors Lena Góra and Will Madden.
“Erupcja” is a city movie, meaning the city of Warsaw, Poland is a character unto itself.

Pete Ohs, a 2013 Filmmaker 25 New Face, describes his Slamdance-premiering comedy/drama Love and Work as “a film about an imaginary past as a way to figure out where we went wrong in the present.” A minimalist, slightly absurdist romantic comedy, the picture represents both a continuation of the pared-down production model Ohs described to Filmmaker upon the release of his previous Jethica as well as a dramatic departure. Instead of the Jethica‘s lo-fi naturalism, Ohs here goes for a clipped rhythms and a more deadpan affect as his two potential workmate lovers who meet in a shoe factory navigate […]

The birthplace of such recent gems as Hannah Ha Ha, Retrograde, The Civil Dead, Yelling Fire In An Empty Theater, and Waiting for the Light to Change, the Slamdance Film Festival returns for its 29th edition, kicking off January 20 in Utah and January 23 online. One title that especially caught our eye is Love and Work, the latest from Pete Ohs, who last directed the SXSW hit Jethica. Starring Stephanie Hunt, Will Madden, Frank Mosley, Alexi Pappas, and John S. Davies, we’re pleased to exclusively premiere the film’s first teaser ahead of a Slamdance debut on January 20.
Here’s a synopsis:

Not long ago, an award-winning Polish composer who’d scored dozens of films approached Ula Śniegowska about U.S. in Progress, an industry event conceived as a bridge between the Polish and American markets that runs parallel to the American Film Festival in Wrocław, Poland.
“He approached me saying, ‘I’ve done enough in the Polish market. I need an introduction to the international market. Can you, as U.S. in Progress, help me?’” Śniegowska recalls. “It seems we are a perfect matchmaker for those types of companies to have their work exposed in the U.S.”
Celebrating its 13th edition, U.S. in Progress was launched as a showcase for emerging independent American filmmakers. Each year, the event presents a curated selection of American indie titles in the final stages of production to European sales agents, distributors and festival programmers. This year’s edition takes place Nov. 8 – 10.

It’s Friday the 13th so today is the perfect day to check out Bloody Disgusting’s throwback slasher We Might Hurt Each Other (formerly Pensive), currently streaming on Screambox!
The film calls back to slasher classics like Friday the 13th.
Inspired by local legends, We Might Hurt Each Other follows a group of privileged high school classmates. After these classmates destroy a set of life-size wooden statues during a wild graduation party, a mysterious masked killer begins picking the group off one by one.
Gory and glorious, We Might Hurt Each Other is a gritty throwback to the 80s and the heyday of slasher cinema. Calling back to Friday the 13th, the filmmakers take what was great about the era and give it a refreshing lift with the infusion of Eastern European folklore.
The bloody Lithuanian teen horror was directed by Jonas Trukanas and stars Gabija Bargailaite (Pilgrims).

Variety hailed Jethica as an “ingenious, deadpan horror-satire that asks, ‘Can you ghost a ghost?’”
In this future cult classic, Jessica lives in fear of a man named Kevin who follows her everywhere she goes. While on a road trip in New Mexico, she reconnects with Elena—an old friend she hasn’t seen since high school—who has been hiding out at her deceased grandmother’s ranch. Elena and Jessica
A woman on the run after being forced to contend with a stalker. An old friend with a spooky secret living in a trailer in the middle of the New Mexico desert. Isolation and ghosts and the importance of friendship – all filtered through a narrator whom we may or may not be able to trust. Jethica is an unusual little genre film which made a big impact at festivals before going on general release, and it’s even more interesting when one digs into the story behind it. Director Pete Ohs and stars Andy Faulkner, Ashley Denise Robinson, Callie Hernandez and Will Madden , all of whom wrote, explained how the project was co-created on the spot from nothing but a location and a handful of shared ideas.
“It started with me and Andy,” says Pete. “We had made a couple films prior, and were talking about making another movie.
