"It could look like someone you know, or it could be a stranger in a crowd. Whatever helps it get close to you. It can look like anyone... but there's only one of it." The sunny summer turns sinister for 19-year-old Jay when a creeping, transformative force enters her life in It Follows, the second film from The Myth of the American Sleepover writer/director David Robert Mitchell—one that, like his debut, takes place in Detroit. Ahead of the horror film's theatrical release on March (Friday the) 13th, a new clip has been released that teases the eerie end to Jay's date.
“For 19-year-old Jay (Monroe), the fall should be about school, boys and weekends at the lake. Yet, after a seemingly innocent sexual encounter she suddenly finds herself plagued by nightmarish visions; she can’t shake the sensation that someone, or something, is following her. Welcome to another horror news round-up! This time around we have an update on the growing cast of Hannibal Season 3 and details on when you can expect to see Salem Season 2 on the small screen and the buzzed-about It Follows on the big screen.
TVLine reports that Glenn Fleshler (True Detective) will play Cordell Doemling, yet another familiar name to fans of Thomas Harris’ books and the Hannibal Lecter movies. For those unfamiliar, Cordell Doemling is the verbally abused medical aid to the wealthy, wicked, and mutilated Mason Verger, who will now be played on the TV series by Joe Anderson in place of Michael Pitt. In the 2001 film, Hannibal, Doemling was played by Željko Ivanek.
In other, previously announced Hannibal Season 3 casting news, it was recently revealed that Rutina Wesley, whom True Blood fans know as Tara Mae Thornton, will play the recurring role of Reba McClane, a blind...

RADiUS has acquired the U.S. rights to critical horror darling "It Follows," written and directed by David Robert Mitchell ("The Myth of the American Sleepover"). The film was well received at its world premiere at Cannes just a few weeks ago. This is great news for fans of intelligent indie horror, a rare subgenre. In his Indiewire review, Eric Kohn called the film a "strange and menacing supernatural story that offers its fair share of allegorical depth," admiringly adding, "Even its calculated scares come from a real place." "It Follows" features a fresh cast of up-and-comers, including Maika Monroe ("Labor Day"), Keir Gilchrist ("It's Kind of a Funny Story"), Daniel Zovatto ("Laggies"), Jake Weary ("Zombeavers"), Olivia Luccardi ("Girls") and Lili Sepe ("Spork"). It is set to be released in the first quarter of 2015.According to RADiUS co-president Tom Quinn, "American horror has an extraordinary new voice in David Robert Mitchell.

When Bob Doto reviewed Spork a few years ago, he coined the term "bitpunk" to explain the new ground being broken by J.B. Ghuman Jr.'s quirky tale of a girl with boy bits who finds her stride in the cruel high-school landscape by dancing her little heart out. I can certainly appreciate and even agree with the term Doto puts forth but I can't get behind the film in quite the same way he did in large part because I don't care for the genre or the film - even if it does include some moments of sublime awesomeness.

Savannah Stehlin is Spork.
Written and directed by debuting feature filmmaker J.B. Ghuman Jr., the 2010 independent musical comedy movie Spork is intriguingly hyped as “Glee Meets Napoleon Dynamite.” Hmmmm….
The coming-of-age film spins the tale of a frizzy-haired, pink-cheeked outcast named Spork (Savannah Stehlin, TV’s Sleeper Cell) who is trying to navigate her way through the hell that is junior high. When a school dance show provides an opportunity for Spork to show up a mean-girls gang, her trailer-park neighbor Tootsie Roll (Sydney Park) steps up to coach her with some “booty-poppin’” moves. Morgan Spurlock's new Comic-Con documentary Comic-Coc Episode IV: A Fan's Hope has been acquired by Wrecken Hill Entertainment and they will be distributing the film, with plans to release it in the Spring of 2012.
I'm not the biggest fan of Spurlock, the guy and his films just seem to annoy me. But I love Comic-Con, it's my favorite event of the year. The documentary will be interesting to watch, and it will be good introduction to people that don't know what Comic-Con is really about. As for people like myself and like many of your, we live the adventure every year for real, and we love it.

Morgan Spurlock's latest documentary Comic Con Episode IV: A Fan's Hope was one of Peter's favorite movies [1] at Toronto and one of my favorite movies [2] of Fantastic Fest. It's a totally different film for the Super Size Me director as he stays off camera and follows several unique people on their journey to the mecca of pop culture, San Diego Comic-Con. In doing so , Spurlock dissects not only why Comic Con is such an amazing event, but why we geeks love what we love. The film is beautiful, inspiring, funny and, up until today, had only played at festivals. That'll change next year because Wrekin Hill Entertainment and the National Entertainment Collectibles Association have acquired the film for theatrical distribution in Spring 2012. In addition, the film will tour larger venue and bring audiences outside of San Diego their own kind of mini-Comic-Con experience complete with Q&A's, contests, presentations,...

1Up is a new microcinema based in Perth, Australia that is launching with a very ambitious slate of screenings this summer. So far, they’ve released their full schedule for the months of June and July that includes a film almost every night of the week, and sometimes two films.
These are movies that have played on the international festival circuit, but many have not been released yet. So this is a rare treat to still see many of them still in a theater setting, even a 20-seat microcinema like 1Up.
The summer screening series kicks off with one of the best films to come out of Australia in recent years: Stuart Simpson’s vicious throwback to ’60s B-movie madness, El Monstro Del Mar, which was reviewed on Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film last year.
Other movies that 1Up will be screening include such festival hits such as Best Worst Movie,...

Title: Spork Director: J.B. B. Ghuman, Jr., serves as a reminder that the words “original” and “good” are not necessarily interchangeable. Heck, this low-budget offering isn’t even all that original, in fact, just constructed of parts to bait one into the false feeling that it is so. ‘Spork’ centers around a frizzy-haired, small town junior high outcast (Savannah Stehlin) — so nicknamed because her absentee mother told her before splitting that she was a hermaphrodite — and her bangle-bracleted...

Amongst all the heated summer bombast experienced at the Cineplex every year, one or two smaller films usually break through, shinning like a diamond in a dumpster piled high with action clichés, wobbly sequels, and one too many superheroes to care about. This summer's one true surprise comes in a small independently produced musical comedy called Spork, helmed by actor-turned-director J.B. Ghuman Jr..
Spork is a coming-of-age tale that follows a young orphaned girl (Savannah Stehlin) growing up with her brother in an Airstream trailer. An outcast in Junior High, Spork joins forces with a local dance crew to take down a 'mean girls' gang lead by Betsy Byotch (Rachel G. Fox). It's an odd, colorful ode to the musical comedies of the 80s and early 90s, strapped with a unique soundtrack and a quirky charm that is sure to win over even the most hardened summer-hating Cinefile, who...

I'm really amazed at the range of films we managed to cover from around the globe this year. Quiet Earth has certainly come a long way over the years and it's really due to the talents and passion of our team of writers who literally travel a world of fests to bring news and reviews of new films.

I only wanted to include films that played to wide audiences either at festivals with large crowds, theatrical releases or if they were available on DVD.
Best of 2010:
Black Swan - Aronofsky does it again with this mind bending thriller set in the world of Ballet. You know those people are crazy, but now you get to see inside the head of a prima ballerina for the first time. Stellar performances and an overall captivating setting make for the best film I've seen this year.
Colour from the Dark - Technically this had a screening some time ago in NYC, but never made any type...

Jeff Mitchell on Rue McClanahanI was working on a movie for Paramount called "The Fighting Temptations," directed by Jonathan Lynn and starring Cuba Gooding Jr. We were doing the New York casting. Rue McClanahan was pitched for it by her agent. She was doing a lot of television, but she wanted to do film very badly. We had her in to meet the director, who was British and didn't know her or understand she was a huge star in the United States. Rue took the material and she did her best. We knew what the scene was about and what the director wanted, but the communication between actor and director wasn't working properly. No matter what he was asking, he wasn't getting what he wanted. The casting director has to take a back seat when the director is running the casting session. Even though I thought I could be a...

Spork, directed by Jb Ghuman Jr., is a sweet little film dressed in an 80s veneer about a young girl-identified hermaphrodite named Spork (Savannah Stehlin) making her way through the vicious absurdity that is Junior High. We meet Spork at rock bottom, where it seems everyone, including a gaggle of Britney Spears-obsessed tween girls, has it in for her. Spork has nowhere to turn until her Krump-tastic friend Tootsie Roll (Sydney Park) breaks her leg and can no longer perform in the upcoming talent show. In order to make something, anything, of herself, Spork decides to try her skill-less moves out in order to win the prize. All’s well that ends well….
…if that was all Spork had to offer. Luckily for us, Spork is a lot more...

J.B. Ghuman doesn't mind you telling him that his movie is weird-- in fact, he and his stars have hand signals to support their love for the giant dose of weirdness that is Spork, a little comedy about growing up weird and lonely in an era that is such a weird mix of the 80s and 90s that Ghuman calls it, simply, "19J.B." Last weekend I caught up with Ghuman and the young actresses Savannah Stehlin (who plays the odd but endearing Spork) and Sydney Park (playing the ball of fire that is Spork's only friend Tootsie Roll), and it was kind of as if the three of them let me in on their weekly brunch date, for all the giggling and inside jokes that were going on. In the film Stehlin stars as the title character, a hermaphrodite with terrible fashion sense and social skills who musters...

Oana, Michael, Savannah, and Sydney TribecaFilm.com: So who wants to tell me about Spork ? Savannah Stehlin [Spork]: I will! Spork is basically about a 14-year-old hermaphrodite who is not really loving life. She's kind of anti-social, introverted, and she doesn't really get herself or get why people are the way they are. She lives in a trailer park with her older brother, Spit. And her next-door neighbor is Tootsie Roll and her mom, Mrs. Roll. Tootsie Roll was originally going to do a dance-off, but she hurts herself and Spork steps in. Spork is also bullied by Loosie Goosie and Betsy Byotch... But at the end of the movie, she realizes that the person she was looking for to be was really just herself. You don't have to like confine to the ways of the world kind of thing. That's it in a nutshell. TribecaFilm.com: That's very good.

While most of the eyes in film are on either SXSW or ShoWest out on the West Coast, folks out on the East Coast are gearing up for Tribeca Film Festival coming up next month. Last week, the fest announced the first group of films, which included the World Narrative films, the Documentaries, as well as Showcases and Special Events.
Now, the festival is getting a bit more star-heavy, as films starring such actors as Colin Farrell, Robert Duvall, Casey Affleck, and even Jessica Alba have joined the list of those titles appearing at the fest. All of these films are now coming to the festival this year, as well as the world premiere of Shrek Forever After.
