The former Banijay Rights distribution exec has been named Senior Sales Executive at the West Coast base for the BBC’s production arm, which is behind ABC reality show Dancing with the Stars and NBC game show The Weakest Link.

The BBC’s director of unscripted has defended the corporation against claims that it is shutting out new content ideas by rebooting TV shows in its primetime schedule.

Kate Phillips’ commissioning team has ordered revivals of shows including Gladiators, Survivor, and The Weakest Link in recent years, sparking allegations that the BBC is increasingly reticent to take risks on fresh formats.

Phillips said BBC commissioners don’t “instinctively” want to dust off old shows, but reboots have an important place in the broadcaster’s schedule. She said revivals represent just 1% of the 3,000 hours of content her unit greenlights every year.

“I’m going to make no apologies for bringing back Gladiators and Survivor because they were really good pitches and I think they are going to be really big shows,” she told the Edinburgh TV Festival.

Phillips added that producers have to work harder to convince the BBC to commission a reboot.

Before being tapped to oversee all content across Roku Media, David Eilenberg got his start in the industry as a writer and producer for reality TV and game shows.

“I spent quite some time as a writer on a game show called ‘The Weakest Link’ and that was really my entry point into working in production full time,” he told TheWrap for this week’s Office With a View.

“That was an interesting point in the evolution of broadcast because it was at the beginning of really the first reality boom,” he continued. “And so they started fishing for game show people to come into certain types of reality show producing, because at that point, in one way or another, most of the big reality shows were games and so they needed people who could think in that way.”

The numbers are in for Tuesday, May 2, 2023, and The Rookie: Feds got some good news as it awaits a renewal or cancellation decision at ABC.

The season finale surged to 2.9 million viewers and a 0.3 rating in the demo, making a decent case for renewal.

However, the recent news that ABC has picked up 9-1-1 from Fox and that Dancing With the Stars is staging a return to the network certainly makes a renewal for ABC's bubble dramas more complicated.

Add in the fact that a Writers Strike is underway and there's an even higher chance of more cancellations.

Earlier in the night on ABC, The Rookie ticked up to 4.2 million viewers and a 0.5 rating.

Will Trent closed out the night at 3.2 million viewers and a 0.3 rating.

Over on Fox, 9-1-1: Lone Star delivered 3.5 million viewers and a 0.4 rating, while Accused did 2 million viewers and a 0.2 rating.

Tuesday night found several shows hitting season/series lows; for some, it couldn't come at a worse time.

9-1-1: Lone Star (read post-mortem and/or review) came down to 3.2 million viewers and a 0.3 rating in the demo, posting season lows.

The 9-1-1 spinoff has not yet secured a renewal for Season 5, and while the chances are that it will be back, it could be in trouble if these numbers are the norm for the spring.

Accused, which was recently renewed for Season 2, was steady at 1.7 million viewers and a 0.2 rating.

Over on ABC, it was a down night for all three dramas.

The Rookie (3.4 million/0.3 rating), The Rookie: Feds (2.4 million/0.2 rating), and Will Trent (2.6 million/0.2 rating).

Feds has yet to be renewed at ABC, and it's likely the latest crossover event was a test to see how these shows would perform by having connective tissue between episodes.
