For Pamela Adlon, starting to watch a new show can be a treacherous thing.
“I have Ocd so if I start something, I’m screwed. I know I’ve got to see this through,” the multi-hyphenate explained, kicking off the jury press conference for this year’s Series Mania.
Adlon, a multiple-Emmy nominee for her writing and acting work on FX’s Better Things and Louie, has been binging on some the best in global TV as head of of the international jury at the international television festival, which runs through March 28 in Lille, France. She joined her fellow jurors — Downton Abbey and Better Call Saul director Minkie Spiro, award-winning French actress Karin Viard (The Bélier Family, Polisse), U.S.-Argentine actor Ignacio Serricchio (Bones, The Young and the Restless), and French musician and composer Victor Le Masne — to talk up the small screen highlights of this year’s competition.

Reporting on news about actors and performers with little or nothing to do with the roles they portray is sometimes dismissed as idle gossip or sensationalism. However, every so often, a story comes about that chronicles the darker side of human nature and leaves us repulsed and horrified. The recent news surrounding Isaiah Stokes is just so. The actor, who has previously appeared on shows such as Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Power, and Blue Bloods, has been convicted on charges of second-degree murder and criminal possession, according to a press release issued by the Queens District Attorney’s office on March 10th, 2025.
Described by district attorney Melinda Katz as a “calculated murder,” the charges Stokes has been convicted of stem from an incident that occurred in 2021. According to prosecutors, Stokes fatally shot Tyrone Jones as he sat in his vehicle outside a restaurant in St. Albans on February...

The film industry was recently hit with another tragic loss with the death of Academy Award-nominated director, David Lynch, and his passing has had fans around the world collectively celebrating the influence of his directorial efforts throughout both film and television. David Lynch is gone, and I'm not handling it well. Lynch was the very definition of a singular artist — there will never be anyone else like him. For over 50 years, Lynch was a filmmaker who almost never compromised, making unique, challenging, mind-blowing art on his own terms. We were immensely lucky to have him, and we are worse off without him. Perhaps we all should've known this was coming — death eventually comes for us all, and last year, word broke that Lynch's health had deteriorated due to emphysema (a fact Lynch confirmed on Twitter/X). And yet, a world without David Lynch feels almost cosmically wrong. I'm sure I wasn't alone in thinking that despite poor health, Lynch would somehow keep on going, and somehow make another movie or TV show again. Just one more.

The great David Lynch has passed away at the age of 78. And while the legendary artist and filmmaker will no doubt be remembered for his surreal, often nightmarish works, what arguably made him such a beloved cultural fixture was his sense of humor.
While one might expect the guy who made Eraserhead and Blue Velvet to be a brooding, self-serious loner, Lynch was anything but. He was a uniquely charming, offbeat character who wouldn’t shy away from the talk show circuit. He made regular appearances on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and once decided that David Letterman’s Late Night was the ideal place to ask fans of Twin Peaks to write into the network to help save the struggling show.

Almost all of Lynch’s films contain at least some comedic elements; like how Mulholland Drive includes a mini-comedy of errors about an incompetent hit man.

Marc Maron, Gaby Hoffmann and David Krumholtz have joined the cast of Jeremy Allen White’s Bruce Springsteen biopic “Deliver Me From Nowhere.”
Maron will play Chuck Plotkin, the music producer who mastered Springsteen’s “Nebraska” album, turning his unprocessed cassette demos into a high-quality record. Hoffmann will portray Springsteen’s mother, Adele Springsteen, a singer in her own right who died at age 98 earlier this year. Krumholtz will play Al Teller, a record label executive who oversaw the release of “Nebraska.”
From Disney’s 20th Century Studios, “Deliver Me From Nowhere” follows Springsteen during the creation of his 1982 album “Nebraska,” a stripped-down record that marked a creative shift from the anthemic “Born to Run” and “The River.” The movie is currently filming in New Jersey and New York. Springsteen, who is involved in the making of the film, visited the set earlier this week and was photographed hugging White.

FX, which stands for Fox Extended, was established by Fox in 1994. A basic cable channel described in its early years as “the little network of NASCAR and Fear Factor repeats,” it began to show the promise of being something more with the 2002 launch of its first original drama, The Shield, for which Michael Chiklis earned the first major Emmy nomination and win for a basic cabler that year. Two years later, John Landgraf, an exec at NBC during its “Must-See TV” epoch, was hired as FX’s head of original programming and began backing shows like Damages, Justified, Louie, The Americans and Atlanta, which made it basic cable’s premier network — the place for premium original programming for adult viewers — with a reach of 99 million households at its 2011 height.

She’s starred in such acclaimed projects as feature films “Dazed and Confused,” “Party Girl,” “You’ve Got Mail,” “Best in Show” and television shows “Boston Legal,” “Lost in Space,” “Louie” and “The Staircase.” But it wasn’t until this year, for her guest appearance on the Amazon Prime Video Series “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” that Posey received recognition from the television academy. Sorry/Not Sorry delves into the nuanced story surrounding comedian Louis C.K.’s admission of inappropriate behavior. Directors Caroline Suh and Cara Mones guide us through a timeline of C.K.’s career highs and lows, the whispers that followed him, and the reckoning brought by speaking out.
Through interviews with journalists, fellow comedians, and those directly impacted, the documentary examines difficult topics around power dynamics, accountability, and where we go from here.
C.K. achieved great success with his grounded, revealing humor. But allegations from women in the industry surfaced for years, and in 2017, a New York Times exposé confirmed their experiences. With candor, C.K. acknowledged misconduct like masturbating without consent during work interactions. This began a debate: could an artist’s work and past actions be separated?

It has now been seven years since Louis C.K. was canceled. Or was he? In November 2017, The New York Times published a damning piece in which five women came forward accusing him of sexual misconduct. In the article, long-running rumors about the famed comedian’s behavior finally came to light, with his victims describing stories in which he masturbated in front of them or on the phone. Following years of denying such claims, a day after the Times exposé he admitted in a statement, “These stories are true.” In quick order, his movie I Love You, Daddy’s release was scrapped, his deal with FX ended and his career was seemingly put on life-support.
In that statement, C.K. said he would “step back and take a long time to listen.” But less than a year later, he was back on stage, offering no remorse for his actions. It was...

“Babes” is a hilarious riff on women friendships/bonding and an unexpected pregnancy. Eden and Dawn (Michelle Buteau) are besties, having grown up together in New York City, and are now firmly in different phases of adulthood. When carefree and single Eden finds herself pregnant after a one night stand, she decides to have a baby on her own, and her friendship with Dawn will face its greatest challenge. “Babes” is a hilarious and heartfelt comedy about the bonds of friendship and the messy, unpredictable challenges of adulthood and becoming a parent.

New York City-born actress, writer, producer, and debut director Pamela Adlon delivers an authentically Big Apple comedy with Babes. Where co-writer and co-lead Ilana Glazer brings her trademark Broad City silliness, Adlons vision veers more toward Woody Allens New York tales or Louis C.K.s self-titled FX series Louie. Its a collaboration that frequently works, except when warring intentions separate like oil and vinegar. Perhaps that starts with the screenplay, where Glazer and writing partner Josh Rabinowitz find their wackier humor at odds with straight-faced pregnancy woes. Babes succeeds as a comedy with enough primetime laughs thats (typically) what happens when hilarious comedians join forces but never fully jells into a balanced experience between prenatal jokes and dead-serious subplots.

We love to see a creative keep scaling up. Watching Pamela Adlon evolve and progress over the last few years has been terrific. An outstanding comedian who rose in popularity on FX’s Louis C.K. comedy “Louie,” after the stint on that series, Adlon graduated to her own similarly personal show “Better Things.” Created by Adlon and C.K., she quickly took over the full reins and started directing on the series as well. And by season two, all the way through its final fifth season, she was directing the entire series and had a hand in writing a bulk of it, too.

Stand-up comedy is a public performance that gives the illusion of intimate spontaneity. This is equally true of reality television, so it’s natural that a master at the former would try his hand at the latter. Such is the origin story of “Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show,” a self-reflexive — and self-explanatory — HBO project that follows Carmichael’s award-winning special “Rothaniel” with an even more extended look at the comic’s later-in-life coming out and its effect on his closest relationships. Just don’t call the series unfiltered. “This is not truth,” a friend reminds Carmichael, and by extension, us. “This is narrative.”
“Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show” is not the first time a professional jokester has blurred the line between entertainment and actual life. Carmichael himself cites “The Truman Show” as an inspiration; more recently, works like Nathan Fielder’s “The Rehearsal” and Bo Burnham’s “Inside” have called attention to their own artificial nature,...

2023 saw the emergence of many new comedy TV shows and the return of beloved favorites, but some stood out more than others. Continuing shows like It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and What We Do in the Shadows continued finding fresh ways to tell their stories. Shows like Beef and The Bear used darker humor and storylines to rise to the top of 2023's TV releases.
Despite the year coming to an end, the best comedy TV shows of 2023 are still being discussed. While this year has seen many hilarious shows across multiple platforms, some stand out more than others. Whether they deliver more lighthearted humor or darker laughs, plenty of comedies have left their mark in 2023. When Judd Apatow and the boys make an R-rated pregnancy comedy, they call it “Knocked Up.” But when “Broad City” co-creator Ilana Glazer and stand-up comic Michelle Buteau try their hand at the same subject, the every-bit-as-raunchy result comes with a far classier title: “Babes.”
That pun is just one of the movie’s many acts of irreverent reclamation, as helmer Pamela Adlon — making a confident switch to feature directing after seminal small-screen contributions to “Louie” and “Better Things” — and her stars de-objectify a label used by dudes, slapping it on themselves. The cheeky term applies to both lifelong amigas Eden (Glazer) and Dawn (Buteau) and the infants they spend most of the movie incubating. These babes are making babies, and you might be surprised just how much comedy there is still to be milked from that seemingly universal (but still widely underexamined) subject.

French-Spanish group Amuse Animation – with hubs in Paris, London, Beijing and the Canary Islands – has recently inked broadcasting deals for Latin America and Middle East/North Africa, for over 540 episodes of its popular YouTube shows, including “Shark Academy,” “Miliki Family,” “RoboFuse,” “AnimaCars” and “Increditales.”
Founded in 2014 by Arthur Lener, Amuse Animation began as a multi-channel network (McN) supplying third-party content to YouTube and soon began producing shows for global pre-school audiences. Fueled in part by the pandemic, many pre-school viewers have migrated to YouTube and linear broadcasters are interested in bringing them back by acquiring content from digital-first studios.
Amuse Animation has embraced what it calls a 360º content strategy, combining digital and broadcasting content. It is repackaging its extensive library of shows – mainly short format of five minutes or less per episode – to secure deals with linear broadcasters.

The cast of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” has a bone to pick with the Emmys: They want an award.
Charlie Day, Glenn Howerton, Rob McElhenney, Kaitlin Olson and Danny DeVito took the stage Monday night to present the award for Outstanding Talk Series.
“What an honor it is to be here at the 75th Emmy Awards,” Olson began.
“Wait, what?” Howerton interjected. “Seventy-five years? The show’s been on for 75 years? We’ve been on the air since 2005. I’ve never been here.”
“Have you guys been doing this every single year without us?” Day then asked.
“They do. They get dressed up. They give each other awards,” McElhenney said. “And 16 seasons we’ve never even presented before.”
Day then asked DeVito if the Emmys have ever given him an award, to which the man behind Frank Reynolds casually said, “Yeah.”

In early January, comedian Katt Williams went on Shannon Sharpe’s Club Shay Shay podcast and took aim at Cedric the Entertainer for stealing “my very best joke.” The bit in question — which involved a pantomime of driving with music blasting — was first performed by Katt in a 1998 appearance on ComicView, then reproduced by Cedric (according to Katt) for his set in Spike Lee’s The Original Kings of Comedy. Cedric called the accusations “revisionist history” on Instagram.
We’ve been down this road many times before. For much of the 20th century, joke stealing was an open secret. “All comedians steal from all comedians,” the legend Stan Laurel once mused. Some of the biggest names in comedy did it. Milton Berle was so blatant in his joke stealing that he earned the nickname “The Thief of Bad Gags.” Richard Pryor admitted on The Tonight Show that he ripped off his comedy idols,...

Neon has picked up rights to Pamela Adlon’s directorial debut “Babes,” a comedy starring Ilana Glazer and Hasan Minhaj.
Glazer, the co-creator and star of Comedy Central’s hit sitcom “Broad City,” co-wrote the screenplay with Josh Rabinowitz. The story follows the aggressively single Eden, who becomes pregnant from a one-night stand and leans on her married best friend (and mother of two), Dawn, to guide her through the gestation and beyond.
Michelle Buteau and John Carroll Lynch round out the cast of “Babes.” A release date for the film has yet to be announced.
Range Media Partners and FilmNation financed “Babes.” It was produced by Susie Fox, Glazer, Rabinowitz, Ashley Fox and Breean Pojunas. FilmNation Entertainment, Range Media Partners and CAA Media Finance handled U.S. sales while FilmNation Entertainment is leading international sales.

The word "impossible" doesn't exist in the world of Barbie, as she can be anything she wants to be. A doctor? A president? A lawyer? Yes, she can be everything, but most importantly, she inspires young girls to put their hearts and souls into achieving their dreams and aspirations. There is no denying that, initially, Barbie was associated with the stereotype of setting unrealistic beauty standards, lacking diversity, choosing beauty over brains, and appearing materialistic — which is definitely not a trait of a good inspirational figure — but in today's world, Mattel took some essential steps to change the perspective of people towards the doll and the criticism associated with her.
The company made significant changes by introducing diversity in its Barbie doll collections, not just in terms of cultures, ethnicity, or careers, but also in terms of different body types to spread positivity and give the message of embracing individuality.

Good news for the King of Staten Island.
On Friday, Peacock announced it had renewed the Pete Davidson comedy “Bupkis” for a second season.
“Pete Davidson is a once-in-a-generation talent, and what he created with the first season of Bupkis absolutely blew us away,” Susan Rovner – the chair of Entertainment Content for NBCUniversal Television and Streaming – said in a statement. “Pete has the rare ability to make you laugh out loud with his unfiltered brand of comedy, and then tear up with his raw and honest vulnerability. We could not be more proud to continue on this journey with Pete, Lorne Michaels, Broadway Video, and our partners at Universal Television for a second season as we continue to bolster Peacock’s comedy slate.”

Viral comedy sensation “Jury Duty,” is an Amazon Freevee original comedy series that follows 29-year-old man Ronald Gladden as he is appointed juror in a civil trial alongside 15 others. What he doesn’t know, however, is that the trial is fake, and that his fellow jurors, the judge, even the security guards… they’re are all actors.
One of Ronald’s fellow fake jurors is James Marsden, who plays a satirical version of himself in the show. Some may believe being yourself to be an easy task, but what Marsden pulls off in “Jury Duty” eclipses the entire field this year in terms of difficulty. And it’s for this reason he could land an Emmy nomination this year in Comedy Supporting Actor.
The fabricated realism of “Jury Duty” meant that while everything was actually a satirical TV show, Marsden and the other actors had to make it seem to...

The documentary capturing comedian Louis C.K.’s #MeToo scandal has been shelved at Showtime.
Director Caroline Suh (“Blackpink: Light Up the Sky”) was originally set to helm the documentary announced by Paramount Global exec David Nevins in August 2022. Nevins exited Paramount in October 2022.
Showtime confirmed to IndieWire that the documentary would not be moving forward but did not provide additional reasons as to why. Variety first reported the news.
“Louis C.K. is a slightly different situation [compared to Harvey Weinstein],” then-Showtime CEO Nevins said at the time. “[He is] a great, great comedian who has come back in his own way.”
Nevins added, “I don’t think the social change that #MeToo has brought about is resolved at all. There’s a bit of backlash against #MeToo, who has to go away and who’s allowed to come back.”
The documentary was set to chart C.K.’s exit from projects in 2017 following multiple allegations of sexual misconduct.

Seinfeld is one of the most popular shows of the '90s and pioneered many sitcom conventions that are still relevant to this day. From Friends to How I Met Your Mother, every comedy show that came up since has a little bit of Seinfeld. The show's structure is simple: although the main storyline follows a continuous course, every episode feels like a singular joke, always ending in a punch line that draws the episode's plot to a close. Just like the writers and even the characters state multiple times, Seinfeld is a show about nothing, yet it went on for nine years, which is largely due to the captivating performances of the Seinfeld cast.
Following a traditional sitcom outline, Seinfeld's episodes usually follow the same characters in mostly the same places: Jerry Seinfeld's apartment, the streets of New York City, the gang's favorite restaurant, and so on. The...

In what feels like a welcome reprieve, Peacock dropped the entire season of Pete Davidson's pseudo-autobiographical series Bupkis in a nicely binge-able package, like the good old days of streaming originals. The show is both not what one thought it would be and exactly what one thought it would be at the same time. As good as the series may be, the fact that it shares quite a few similarities to other, recent series may dull the audience's reaction.
The series was announced in March 2022 with Pete Davidson developing it alongside Judah Miller, who executive produced Davidson's movie The King of Staten Island and has written for Crashing, another pseudo-autobiographical show based on the life of a stand-up comedian (Pete Homes). SNL writer Dave Sirius is the other co-creator. He also co-wrote The King of Staten Island alongside Davidson and Judd Apatow. It's a strong team, and they...

The new Peacock series "Bupkis" is almost working overtime from the get-go to inure itself from any serious criticism. The title alone puts you in mind of something not worth expending much effort upon, but each of the eight episodes begins with a title card and accompanying voiceover essentially shielding co-creator, co-writer, and star Pete Davidson from any serious attacks, specifying that while the series may be inspired by fact, it is still very much a fictional product. "It's bupkis," is the closing sentence of the title card, and the tone of the narrator communicates a sense that none of this is worth getting worked up over. That title card ends up being a sign that expectations are best lowered when approaching the streaming series that presents a skewed version of the life of the very famous stand-up comedian/sketch performer, and also a sign that "Bupkis" is a scattershot,...

The comedy guest Emmy categories have been “Saturday Night Live’s” domain since the sketch series was first allowed to compete there in 2009. It has won 14 awards since then, seven in each category, but last year was one of the rare ones in which “SNL” failed to win either award — and wasn’t even nominated for one of them. Can it rebound this year?
2022 marked just the fourth time “SNL” went home empty-handed in guest after Nathan Lane took Best Comedy Guest Actor for “Only Murders in the Building,” winning his first Primetime Emmy in seven bids, and “Hacks'” Laurie Metcalf nabbed Best Comedy Guest Actress for her first Emmy in 28 years. Ric Wilson, Chromeo, and A-Trak have cooked up a new project called Clusterfunk. Stream it below via Apple Music or Spotify.
Canadian DJ A-Trak introduced his fellow Montreal natives Chromeo to Ric Wilson’s music in the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic. Inspired by the social movements of the moment, the artists convened with the Chicago rapper in California to forge a project steeped in socialism and communism, set to a mix of funk, soul, and hip-hop. King Louie, Felicia Douglass of Dirty Projectors, Stic.Man of Dead Prez, Kiéla Adira, and Mariame Kaba feature on the project.
Title track “Clusterfunk” alternates between stark verses from Wilson — who poses questions like “If it wasn’t in the bible, would you call it sin?/ If Dylan Roof wasn’t white, would they let him live?” — before Chromeo de-escalate his moral questioning with a classic sing-along chorus, crooning, “Welcome to the...

Who’s ready to party?
Parker Posey’s beloved 1995 coming-of-age comedy “Party Girl” celebrates a 4K restoration with a national tour to mark the 28th anniversary of the film. “Party Girl” kicks off in New York City at the IFC Center on April 28, followed by a live Q&a with lead star Posey. The film simultaneously debuts in Los Angeles at Glendale Laemmle Theatre and Landmark Westwood Theatre also on April 28, with a live Q&a with film director Daisy von Scherler Mayer.
In the classic film, a 20-something, irresponsible party girl is bailed out of jail by her librarian godmother. To repay the loan, she starts working at the library and gradually turns her life around.
“We made this movie for ‘the kids’ — as we called them — young people from small towns, who had big dreams, and who weren’t, for whatever reason, conforming to the status quo,” Posey shared with IndieWire.

David Lynch is one of the most beloved cult filmmakers of all-time, but the passion for his theatrical feature films is only part of the reason that he has grown such an expansive fan base. Yes, Lynch has quite a few classics under his belt, but it’s his endearing personality that makes him so unique. Whether he's creating his daily weather reports or showing up as himself on episodes of Family Guy or Louie, Lynch brings an optimism and sense-of-humor that may shock those that have seen his most disturbing films. His activities are unpredictable, so leave it to Lynch to give his funniest performance to date in his bizarre Netflix short film What Did Jack Do? that was released on Netflix without warning at the beginning of 2020.

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times released Thursday, the comedian slammed ABC for firing her in 2018 from her top-rated sitcom Roseanne (which was subsequently rebranded The Conners), and compared her treatment to that of two other popular transgressive comics, Dave Chappelle and Louis C.K.
“They didn’t do it to anyone else in Hollywood, although they always [mention] Dave Chappelle and Louis C.K.,” she told The Los Angeles Times. “Well, Louis C.K. did lose everything, but he committed an actual [offense]. And Dave Chappelle was protected by Netflix. I’m the only person who’s lost everything, whose life’s work was stolen, stolen by people who I thought loved me. And there was silence. There was no one in Hollywood really defending me publicly, except for Mo’nique,...

Donald Glover's FX series "Atlanta" was a surreal and winding rollercoaster that departed from conventional television further and further with each subsequent episode. The show felt totally unique, perhaps because of its broad amalgam of influences. The series' creators took lots of inspiration from some pretty unexpected places, some of which might even surprise the show's biggest fans.
The dream-like nature of "Atlanta" has prompted a natural comparison to David Lynch's cult classic mystery series, "Twin Peaks." According to Glover, this likeness was totally intentional. "I just always wanted to make 'Twin Peaks' with rappers," he told Vulture in 2016. As it turns out, Glover had always planned to detach the show from reality over time. "Television shows are like novels, You just got to invest in them," he explained. "The tone of this, it's going to take people time to figure out what's going on, which I think is a good thing.

Peter Bogdanovich
When Peter Bogdanovich was twelve-years-old, he began keeping a record of every film he saw, even including reviews, a practice he kept up for decades, seeing as many as four hundred films a year. This sparked a love of movies and he was intent on becoming a director. Bogdanovich caught his break when he happened to strike up a conversation with Roger Corman at a screening, who quickly offered him a job.

As Black Panther: Wakanda Forever continues to rule the 2022 box office (with it almost becoming Phase 4's second highest grossing movie), it's impossible not to think about how far some of the movie stars have come since their careers began. Danai Gurira rose to prominence after starring in the HBO drama, Treme; Letitia Wright made a couple of guest appearances on Doctor Who and Top Boy, and Martin Freeman and Winston Duke appeared two huge sitcoms prior to joining the MCU (The Office UK and Modern Family).
While the MCU does boast a talented roster of stars, it does appear that Freeman and Duke aren't the only actors who have also appeared in several iconic TV sitcoms as well. It shouldn't really come as a surprise to fans either - after all, these experiences have likely helped them to create the hilarious characters and scenes they love today.
