There are no two words that seem to encapsulate Colin Firth's long career as an actor better than love and politics. From Firth's more popular roles in projects like Mamma Mia!and the 1995 adaptation of Pride and Prejudiceto his equally classic turns in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and The King's Speech, Firth's best performances tend to revolve around the conflict between personal desire and social obligation. And while the actor clearly has no shortage of hits to keep longtime fans enthralled, viewers searching for a deeper glimpse into the actor's narrative accomplishments need look no further than one of Firth's earliest projects. Another Country, the 1984 romantic drama directed by filmmaker Marek Kanievska, explores a poignant love story that tests the tolerance of Great Britain's rigid society with such fervor that it still deserves to be considered one of Firth's most important projects to date.

Avengers: Endgame’s Joe Russo Says That Harvey Weinstein Is The Reason Why Blockbusters Stay Out Of The Awards Season: He Vilified Mainstream Movies…”(Photo Credit –Instagram/Wikimedia)
Avengers: Endgame co-director Joe Russo shared his thoughts on why blockbuster movies mostly do not win major awards in the awards reason, including the Oscars, and the reason is Harvey Weinstein. The remark comes after the Indie film Anora bagged the most wins at the Oscars 2025, including Best Picture and Best Actress. Keep scrolling for the deets.

Following his Oscar win for The King's Speech, Colin Firth did varied work during the 2010s, veering from comedy (Kingsman: The Secret Service) to children's movies (Mary Poppins Returns), but Firth also did a great deal of serious work, including a fine performance as a former prisoner of war in The Railway Man, and the 2017 period drama The Mercy. The film was a box office bomb, but Firth does powerful work as Donald Crowhurst, a weekend sailor who takes an audacious risk. And there's more than one reason why it's worth watching.

Turns out, when you’ve won Best Picture, most of the time, the only place you can go after that high is down.
Opening this weekend at the box office is “Mickey 17,” the first film from director Bong Joon Ho since his film won Best Picture for “Parasite” back in 2019. “Parasite” was something of a unicorn, an international film that crossed all borders and became a $259 million global commercial hit and an awards circuit sensation. Even with Robert Pattinson helping his cause, that’s going to be a tough benchmark to surpass. Warner Bros. is projecting a $40-50 million global opening weekend.
The difference this time is director Bong is working with a major studio, Warner Bros., rather than indie distributor Neon, and “Mickey 17” will open wide on 3,400 screens domestically, whereas “Parasite” at its peak only hit 2,000.
But when a director’s movie wins Best Picture, does their next one perform better?...

He’s got an Oscar, played Albert Einstein, and even shared a flat with Mel Gibson. Now, the Australian actor is here to answer your questions
It’s not all that often you get the chance to put your questions to an honest-to-goodness best actor Oscar winner, but that’s what we’ve got coming down the pipe. Geoffrey Rush won the big one back in 1997 for his role as pianist David Helfgott in Shine, and he’s won a ton of others, including Baftas, Golden Globes, an Emmy, a Tony and four Screen Actors Guild awards. In fact it’s easier to ask what award hasn’t he won?
Now, Australia has produced more than its fair share of premium acting talent, from Cate Blanchett and Hugh Jackman to Nicole Kidman and Guy Pearce, but Rush is definitely up there with the best of them. Aside from Shine, he...

Every once in a while, Hollywood collectively puts all of their brainpower into making a film that changes the definition of cinema. The Social Network was exactly that, in my opinion. I’m not denying that this film didn’t have its flaws. Mark Zuckerberg himself called it inaccurate. However, inaccuracy doesn’t make it lose all its currency.

The Academy seems to have put this thought aside when they were figuring out the victor of the 83rd Academy Awards. The film was nominated for eight awards and only won three, losing out in the major categories and losing the Best Picture award to The King’s Speech.
I believe that it deserved to win, regardless of how good The King’s Speech was, and I have the facts to prove it.

This is clearly not your parents' Motion Picture Academy. Anora won Best Picture at the Oscars on Sunday, one of five awards claimed by the indie film from director Sean Baker. It's an unconventional Oscar champ to say the least, but unconventional seems to be the new standard for voters, who have made a series of daring choices over the last decade. It appears as though the Academy's efforts to expand and diversify its ranks are paying off. While diversity in business and government faces a vicious backlash, Anora shows how Dei has transformed the Oscars.

You probably don't have "Geoffrey Rush and John Lithgow going at each other's throats" on your 2025 Bingo card. It's worthy of note how, even though Lithgow is the villain in their new thriller The Rule of Jenny Pen, he gets top billing over Rush, an Oscar-winner from The King's Speech. It's a film that relishes its villainy, and Lithgow is riding hot after his standout — and also villainous — turn in Edward Berger's red-hot feature, Conclave. Lithgow remains very much in the news after being cast as the iconic Dumbledore character in the new and highly anticipated Harry Potter series (and being a funny part of the recent 97th Academy Awards telecast).
It's also noteworthy that Lithgow, very much an American performer, dons a flawless English accent in his new horror-thriller from IFC Films and Shudder. Meanwhile, don't sleep on the reliably committed Geoffrey Rush here, aka "Barbosa" to the...

In the 21st century, 25 films have so far won Best Picture. A lot has changed over the past 25 years around the world and within the Academy. That evolution is partly reflected in this century’s list of Best Picture winners, which contains films that are both beloved and oft-derided. In the case of some, their Best Picture wins have even directly strengthened or worsened their reputations.
Now, ahead of the 2025 Oscars, here is where you can currently stream all of the Best Picture winners of the 21st century so far.
“American Beauty” (DreamWorks Pictures) “American Beauty” (1999)

Once Geoffrey Rush hit his mid-60s, he was offered more and more roles where his age was the focal point. Yet when he read the script for “The Rule of Jenny Pen,” the nursing home-set horror film offered a different angle.
Rush plays Stefan Mortensen, a tough-talking judge who suffers a stroke and must live in an assisted living facility. Unfortunately, one of the other wards is Dave Crealy (John Lithgow), who terrorizes the residents in increasingly sinister ways — along with the help of his hand puppet, Jenny Pen. As Dave gets more emboldened to do terrible things in the nursing home, Stefan loses more and more of his faculties, having to take down his nemesis as his motor skills fade.
“I’ve had quite a few scripts sent my way in the last eight years that felt like treading water,” the 73-year-old actor says. “But in this, his brain deteriorates — actually,...

Conclave won Best Ensemble at the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday night, becoming the first movie to defeat Anora at one of the top industry guilds.
The win allows the Oscars Best Picture race to keep some intrigue heading into next weekend. Anora had previously won top honors at the Producers Guild Awards, Directors Guild Awards, and Writers Guild Awards. Since the SAG Awards started giving out its film ensemble honor, only five movies have swept the top industry guilds: American Beauty, Slumdog Millionaire, No Country for Old Men, Argo, and Everything Everywhere All at Once. All five movies won Best Picture.
Now, this is a race. Conclave heads into the Oscars next week with some significant wind at its back, having also won Best Film honors at the BAFTA Awards last week. It is also heavily favored to win Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Editing. If Conclave pulls off the Best Picture upset,...

“Anora” won Best Feature at the the 40th Annual Film Independent Spirit Awards, which took place on Saturday afternoon in Santa Monica and was hosted for the second year in a row by Aidy Bryant. “Anora’s” Indie Spirit win follows its recent triumphs at the DGA and PGA awards and boosts its chances for Oscar glory next week. “Anora” also won Best Director for Sean Baker and Best Lead Performance for Mikey Madison. Repeating her victory at the BAFTAs, Madison beat Demi Moore, who had been considered the solid frontrunner.
In many ways, the Indie Spirit Awards followed a pattern it has shown in recent years: Anytime its voters can give a statuette to an Oscar-nominated film or performance, they do. For those with Hollywood dreams, whether it's acting in films or directing them, their biggest aspiration may be to win an Oscar. "Academy Award winner" would be forever attached to their name, and presumably, doors would open in their careers that had never opened before.
While the Oscars certainly recognize performers and filmmakers for their exceptional talents and place them in a class above the rest, they also bring high expectations. After winning, there will always be pressure to live up to that title, which may be impossible to achieve again. This is part of the dreaded "Oscar curse." What happens after you've achieved the biggest honor in Hollywood?
Oscar campaigns and wins can be just as much of a story as the movies themselves. Hollywood's publicity machine spins a specific narrative to help an artist win the coveted award — the higher the stakes or the more cultural impact, the better.

It’s time for a good old release date shakeup! Steven Spielberg‘s anticipated event film no longer opens in theaters on May 15, 2026. Instead, the lauded filmmaker’s mysterious new feature opens on June 12, 2026, taking over a spot previously reserved for Everything Everywhere All At Once Oscar-winning duo Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, also known as The Daniels.
According to The Daniels, their next movie is coming along nicely. Still, it needs more time in the oven, so let them cook. A new date for their latest project is forthcoming. In the meantime, cinephiles can look forward to learning more detail about the next outing from the filmmakers who brought us an Oscars dark horse and one of the most visually entrancing films of 2022.

Steven Spielberg is headed back into the science fiction arena with an untitled event movie that’s reportedly centered on UFOs, and Universal has given the project a new release date.
Previously set for May 15, 2026, Spielberg’s next will arrive in theaters on June 12, 2026. Steven Spielberg reteams with screenwriter David Koepp (Jurassic Park) on the film.
Emily Blunt (A Quiet Place) stars alongside Josh O’Connor (Challengers), Colman Domingo (Sing Sing), Colin Firth (The King’s Speech) and Eve Hewson (Bad Sisters).
It’s worth noting that June 12, 2026 is also the current release date for Scary Movie 6, with the Wayans Brothers returning to bring the spoof franchise back to life for Paramount.
Steven Spielberg is of course no stranger to extraterrestrial encounters, directing two of the greatest alien movies of all time: Close Encounters of the Third Kind in 1977 and E.T. in 1982. It’s an arena he returned to in 2005, directing an adaptation of H.

Steven Spielberg’s next event movie with Universal will no longer go on May 15, 2026, rather open on Friday, June 12 next year, taking over a dating slot previously occupied by the Oscar-winning Daniels’ next untitled picture.

Universal is shifting its untitled Steven Spielberg event film away from “Avengers: Doomsday” and “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” and straight into the “Scary Movie” reboot’s territory. The untitled Spielberg movie was originally set for a May 15, 2026 theatrical release; the film will now wait nearly another month, releasing wide on Friday, June 12, 2026.
The shift is not all about Spielberg, IndieWire has learned. The June slot was previously occupied by another untiled Universal event film, that one directed by Daniels Kwan and Scheinert. The Daniels film is now undated, but a new release date will be announced shortly. It has a script, a person with knowledge of the situation told IndieWire, but needs a little more time. Internally, the Spielberg shift is being looked at as a win-win for both films.
It’s not like there is no competition set for Spielberg’s new date — it’s just now less of a crossover with potential movie-goers.

Guy Pearce, the guest of this episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, is one of the most gifted screen actors of his generation.
An England-born Aussie, he has given standout performances in films such as 1994’s The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, 1997’s L.A. Confidential and 2000’s Memento; 2009’s The Hurt Locker and 2010’s The King’s Speech, both of which went on to win the best picture Oscar; and in the 2011 limited series Mildred Pierce, for which he won an Emmy and was nominated for Golden Globe and SAG awards, and the 2021 limited series Mare of Easttown, both opposite Kate Winslet.
Most recently, though, Pearce has garnered rave reviews for his portrayal of Harrison Lee Van Buren, a millionaire Pennsylvania industrialist who becomes the patron of a Jewish architect who survived the Holocaust and came to America, in Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist, a...

But, in true Bridget Jones fashion, she’s got two new men in her life. And you’ll probably recognize both of them.
Here are the key players in “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy.”

Director's jail isn't like the regular one, since it operates under Hollywood's own convoluted "justice" system. A singular box office flop could result in a life sentence for a filmmaker where they're covertly blacklisted from the industry, never ever working on a big studio movie again. It's harsh -- but no one ever said that Tinseltown is a fair or forgiving place.
What's wild is how Hollywood doesn't take history into consideration here. A director could pump out five financially successful films in a row and have one dud, but that's it -- off to director's jail they go. Heck, at times, movies are doomed to fail before they're even made, but the filmmaker gets the blame in the end. Look at "Catwoman" and "Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li" as notorious examples. There are shopping lists with more substance than those scripts, and not even Steven Spielberg could have saved them.

The gold-plated meltdown that has followed the revelation of Emilia Pérez star Karla Sofía Gascón’s past anti-Muslim and racist tweets — with anti-George Floyd and pro-Hitler sentiments thrown in — has now required numerous apologies/explanations from the Best Actress Oscar nominee. Gascón’s previous online remarks have seriously cratered the odds for her and her film, which is nominated for 13 Oscars. The journalist and podcaster who uncovered Gascón’s troubling social media posts insists it was good old-fashioned reporting and she was not a “studio plant” fueling a smear campaign underwritten by a rival nominee.
In any case Gascón’s self-inflicted mess is the latest example of an internet-powered scandal that has threatened to derail an Oscar campaign. Here’s a look at the four most notable examples this century and how they played out.

Veteran actor Guy Pearce recently shared a surprising and candid assessment of his role in Christopher Nolan’s breakthrough film “Memento,” despite the movie’s critical acclaim and his own numerous award nominations.
In an interview with The Sunday Times, Pearce, 57, revealed his deep dissatisfaction with his performance as Leonard Shelby in the 2000 psychological thriller. “I’m still depressed. I’m shit in that movie,” he said after rewatching the film following a recent Q&a session.
Pearce’s self-criticism goes beyond typical actor modesty. He gave himself a rating of “five out of ten” for the performance, explaining that his approach to the character was fundamentally flawed. “I was trying to do a flippant attitude but it was all wrong,” he noted, referencing legendary actor John Gielgud’s advice to “never be bad in a good movie.”

Plenty of cinephiles think fondly of Guy Pearce’s turn as the amnesiac Leonard Shelby in “Memento,” but Pearce isn’t one of them.
The 57-year-old actor, who most recently picked up an Academy Award nomination for his supporting turn in Brady Corbet’s historical epic “The Brutalist,” spoke candidly about his performance in Christopher Nolan’s 2000 thriller “Memento” in an interview with The Times.
“I’m having an existential crisis,” Pearce admitted. “I watched ‘Memento’ the other day and I’m still depressed. I’m shit in that movie. I’d never thought that before, but I did this Q&a of ‘Memento’ earlier this month and decided to actually watch the film again.”
“But while it was playing I realized I hate what I did,” he added. “And so all this stuff about an exec at Warners being why I’ve not worked with Chris again? It came crashing down.

From Vittorio di Sica’s “Bicycle Thieves” to the films of the Safdies and Sean Baker, using non-professional actors has long been a tool filmmakers have employed to add a note of authenticity to their work. And yet, with “East of Wall,” writer/director Kate Beecroft elevates this concept to greater heights, crafting a feature docu-fiction debut that is cinematically and narratively rich, but also takes care to reflect the deeper reality at the heart of its story.

The whiplash of the Oscar nominations rippled across Hollywood professionals, awards pundits, and elated enthusiasts of 2024’s best films and performances.
The most jaw-dropping — and welcomed — moment of nomination morning came from Walter Salles’ Brazilian drama, “I’m Still Here,” which landed three major nominations: international feature, best actress for Fernanda Torres, and best picture. This marks the second consecutive year in which more than one non-English language movie received a best picture nomination, following 2023’s “Anatomy of a Fall” and “The Zone of Interest” (although it’s the first time two international feature nominees have been recognized). It shows that the Golden Globes (at least their winners) still matter.
After Torres won the Globe for best actress, triumphing over A-listers Angelina Jolie (“Maria”) and Nicole Kidman (“Babygirl”), many Academy voters told Variety they were seeking out the film, with feedback being overwhelmingly positive. The 2025 Oscar nominations were announced on Thursday and while some vets like Ralph Fiennes (Conclave) and Edward Norton (A Complete Unknown) have been around the block before, many others heard their names called for the very first time.
Among those Oscar newbies is Best Actress contender Demi Moore (The Substance), whose career spans more than 40 years but who, as she noted in her Golden Globe acceptance speech, was dismissed as a “popcorn actress” by a producer. It’s surprising that Guy Pearce (The Brutalist) never earned an Oscar nom before now; his past roles include Oscar-winning films like L.A. Confidential (1997), The Hurt Locker (2009), and The King’s Speech (2010), but he finally got on the board in this year’s Best Supporting Actor race. Hollywood royalty Isabella Rossellini (Conclave), the daughter of Oscar nominee Roberto Rossellini and Oscar winner Ingrid Bergman, finally scored a nom of her own in Best Supporting Actress.

Kieran Culkin's star has been rapidly on the rise and his latest film, A Real Pain, could see him win an Oscar, but before that happens, take a beat to go back and revisit another incredible film by his co-star and director from 2010. Kieran Culkin is no stranger to Hollywood. As a child, he was frequently cast in minor roles in notable movies, including Father of the Bride, starring a comedy legend, and Home Alone, starring Macaulay Culkin. However, as is clear by the shared name, Kieran's brother, Macaulay, actually had a much more successful career in acting at the time.
While he did manage to land a leading role in a film in 2002, that was the year that also marked a several year-long hiatus from appearing in TV and film until he returned in 2008. His next biggest notable role was in 2010, when Culkin appeared in Scott Pilgrim vs.

Last night’s two top Golden Globe winners, Netflix’s Emilia Pérez and A24’s three-and-a half-hour epic drama The Brutalist, were also big winners in terms of Oscars momentum. The former won Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical Globe along with three other victories from a record ten nominations. The latter took the all-important Best Motion Picture – Drama Globe and two other major awards including Best Actor-Drama for Adrien Brody and Best Director for Brady Corbet.
The first big test of strength in the two-month stretch to the March 2 Academy Awards, last night’s Globes results are impressive and perhaps indicative that either Emilia Pérez or The Brutalist will be the ultimate Best Picture Oscar winner. That is if they can ride this horse for another eight weeks.

The story of Pan Am Flight 103 is one that continues to haunt much of Britain. In 1988, a transatlantic flight to America exploded over the Scottish town of Lockerbie, killing all 243 passengers and 16 crew members. Parts of the aircraft fell onto the town and killed another 11 people.
A bomb aboard the plane was responsible for the carnage. The search for answers continues to this day, as American authorities are set to hold a federal trial for the latest suspect in the bombing that created the deadliest terrorist attack in the history of the UK. The hunt for justice has left deep divisions between the victims’ families, and one advocate in particular, at the center of this Peacock miniseries, came to represent the knotty and obsessive hunt for the truth.
“How can you, of all people, prepare to be in the same room as him,” a particularly forward prison guard asks Dr.
