One of Alien: Romulus' shocking reveals happened behind the scenes, when it was confirmed the Offspring sequence was filmed with a real actor wearing prosthetics. However, that creature's introduction was replaced with CGI after the film first screened with a test audience.
Alien: Romulus was a return to form for the franchise with its reliance on practical effects, and it showed in the visceral scenes of Xenomorphs and facehuggers. The Offspring blindsided fans in the final act, however; many suspected Kay (played by Isabela Merced) would birth an abomination but no one expected That. The creature has been compared to the Newborn from Alien: Resurrection, which used animatronics to flesh out the hybrid. A VFX head told Screen Rant that the Offspring was filmed using a real actor wearing prosthetics, save for two sequences.

Commenters under Netflix’s Apple Cider Vinegar trailer seem to think the teaser gives off real Inventing Anna vibes. Both shows focus on women who draw unsuspecting victims into their web of lies. In Apple Cider Vinegar, the liar at the series’ heart is an Australian influencer who lures followers in with claims she’s found a new way to battle cancer.
“Set at the birth of Instagram, Apple Cider Vinegar follows two young women who set out to cure their life-threatening illnesses through health and wellness, influencing their global online communities along the way. All of which would be incredibly inspiring if it were all true,” reads Netflix’s synopsis. “This is a true-ish story based on a lie, about the rise and fall of a wellness empire; the culture that built it up and the people who tore it down.”

Alien: Romulus promised to bring the franchise back to its roots, and while it delivered on that, it still had time to reference Ridley Scott’s prequels thanks to a major Prometheus connection. With Romulus being the first Alien movie in seven years as well as the first Alien film to be produced following Disney’s acquisition of Fox, it only made sense for it to be the start of a new story rather than a direct sequel to Alien: Covenant. Set between the first and second movies in the Alien timeline, Romulus was very much a standalone film.
While there are plenty of Alien Easter eggs in Romulus, the movie works just fine for those who never watched any of the Alien movies. The fact that Alien: Romulus is getting a sequel only confirms that it was meant to be the start of a new chapter in the series...

The Offspring from Alien: Romulus is one of the most unique horror movie creations of the year but how much of that creation was CGI and how much was practical effects? Right up to its third act, Alien: Romulus is a really solid Alien movie with engaging characters, exhilarating action sequences, and terrifying jump scares. But in its final act, it goes to a whole other level of awesomeness with the reveal of the Offspring. After pregnant Kay injects herself with the Prometheus goo and the other survivors get back to the ship, she gives birth to a horrifying hybrid.
This years horror offerings have brought both underwhelming monster designs, like the glittery disco-ball demon from Apartment 7A, and unforgettably unholy creations, like Monstro Elisasue from The Substance. Alien: Romulus Offspring falls into the latter category; its one of the horror genres most frightening sights of the decade so far.

Warning: this article contains spoilers for Alien: RomulusAlien: Romulus has been one of the most successful horror movies of the past year, taking aspects from both the original Alien movies and the more recent prequel films to create a project that serves as a more solid bridge between the old and the new. Alien: Romulus has been reviewed quite well, hitting with both critics and audiences, on top of becoming the second highest-grossing film in the Alien franchise. The film is a certified hit, and has been seen as a return to form for the franchise after the divisiveness of the two prequel films.
One of the main points of discussion about the Alien films is naturally how they handle the titular alien creatures. From the classic Xenomorphs like facehuggers and chestbursters, to new additions in Romulus like the Offspring, the franchise is most well known for its excellent creature designs,...

Alien: Romulus introduced The Offspring to the franchise, a terrifying new monster with its own set of powers and abilities. By the time of Alien: Romulus' ending, the installment solidified it as one of the best in the series. Not only did it feature plenty of classic Xenomorph-based action-horror, but it also tied to the Alien prequel movies by expanding the lore of the franchise. This was done via the inclusion of the Prometheus Fire, a pathogen that led to the creation of The Offspring.
The Offspring is a new type of Xenomorph variant in the Alien franchise and provided a terrifying final obstacle for Rain to overcome in Alien: Romulus. However, The Offspring is very different from the final monsters of the past Alien movies. The reason for this links to its placement on the Alien movie timeline, as alluded to via the film's connections to Prometheus and Alien: Covenant.

One of the most talked-about - not to mention divisive - elements of Fede Alvarez's Alien: Romulus was the introduction of another Xenomorph/human hybrid in the last act, and previously-released concept art has revealed that a number of different designs for the creature were considered.
Towards the end of the film, a pregnant and dying Kay (Isabela Merced) injects herself with the Rook android's Prometheus 5 formula to keep herself alive. Though she does survive (for a while), this ultimately results in her giving birth to a pretty damn terrifying hybrid, which kills its mother and very nearly manages to eliminate Rain (Cailee Spaeny) and Andy (David Jonsson) before being blasted into space.
Now, concept artist Dane Hallett has shared some more of his work to Instagram, and it seems the Offspring's original final form was going to look a lot more like a standard Xenomorph.

A new concept art for Alien: Romulus has been shared, and it reveals a disturbing design for the new Xenomorph hybrid. The latest installment in the Alien franchise has seen its fair share of success, currently sporting an 80% Rotten Tomatoes score from critics and 85% from audience members. Its also performed well at the box office, grossing $331 million worldwide. At the end of Alien: Romulus, a new Xenomorph hybrid was revealed, and its been a hot topic for discussion.
A concept artist for Alien: Romulus, Dane Hallett, took to Instagram to share a version of the Offspring that almost made it to the final cut. The Offspring's reveal in Alien: Romulus is arguably one of its mind-blowing (if not divisive) moments. One concept artist revealed alternate designs for the creature, which looked nothing like the Engineers from Prometheus.

"During Alien: Romulus, [Fede lvarez] encouraged us all to have a go at the hybrid. i dont really do creatures but had a go in nomad sculpt," it wrote. The images revealed different versions of the Offspring, but all had definitive Xenomorph features; they stood almost upright, and one version brandished a tail. The designs were unmistakably Xenomorphs apart from their human nipples and chests.

Alien: Romulus contains quite a few call-backs to Ridley Scott's original masterpiece and James Cameron's sequel, but it also reintroduces a concept from one of the less popular movies in the franchise, Alien: Resurrection.
Towards the end of the film, a pregnant and dying Kay injects herself with the Prometheus 5 formula to keep herself alive. Though she does survive (for a while), this ultimately results in her giving birth to a human/alien hybrid.
Named "The Offspring" in the credits, this rather terrifying creature does look a lot better than the albino monstrosity from Resurrection, but introducing another hybrid was a choice that not everyone was fully on board with... including the studio!
While speaking to THR, director Fede Alvarez revealed that the studio did initially have some reservations.
"They did [push back] at the beginning [with regard to the Offspring], but not because they didn’t like it. They just thought, 'Is it too much?...

"Alien: Romulus" most came alive for me with its final set-piece. Rain (Cailee Spaeny), Andy (David Jonsson), and Kay (Isabela Merced) seemingly escape and are ready to make their cryo-sleep voyage. In a revolting new spin on trademark "childbirth as horror" themes of "Alien," the fetus in Kay mutates and, once birthed, rapidly matures into an eight-foot-tall xenomorph with a human-ish face.

The score for “Alien: Romulus” is coming to digital platforms, to be followed by a physical release in November.
Composed by Benjamin Wallfisch, the music for the Fede Álvarez film — which takes place between the events of Ridley Scott’s 1979 “Alien” and James Cameron’s 1986 “Aliens” — arrives digitally on August 16. Golden Globe and Grammy-nominated Wallfisch drew upon the well-known scores for those two films from Jerry Goldsmith and James Horner, as well as Marc Streitenfeld’s music for Scott’s 2012 prequel “Prometheus.”
The digital release includes 20 cues. The vinyl edition, to be released by Mutant on November 15, features alternate artwork and six bonus tracks. It’s available for pre-order Friday, August 16. Check out the cover art below:
After composing the scores for “Annabelle: Creation,” “Blade Runner 2049” and “Twisters” just this year, Wallfisch has established a pedigree for absorbing themes from famous films series and lovingly reimagining them for new chapters.

Director George Miller decided to continue the Mad Max franchise with the Mad Max: Fury Road prequel Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga… and while the movie got good reviews (like the 9/10 review from JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray), the worldwide box office numbers just barely passed the $168 million budget, so the Furiosa story was not something a lot of movie-goers were exceptionally eager to see on the big screen. It has been on VOD for a while now, and now we know when it’s going to start streaming: SuperHeroHype reports that Furiosa will be available to watch on the Max streaming service as of August 16th.
Directed by Miller from a screenplay he wrote with Nico Lathouris, Furiosa has the following synopsis: As the world fell, young Furiosa is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus.

Acclaimed Australian actress Asher Keddie is reprising her leading role in the critically acclaimed drama series “Strife” as filming commences on the second season in Sydney. Inspired by Mia Freedman’s memoir “Work, Strife, Balance,” the Binge original examines the journey of digital media pioneer Evelyn Jones (Keddie) as she navigates the evolving landscape of women’s media.
Season one was a breakout hit for Binge last year, becoming the streaming platform’s biggest original series premiere to date with record-breaking viewership. The character-driven drama resonated deeply with audiences through its portrayal of Jones’ ambitious rise in a male-dominated industry and the personal sacrifices demanded by her career.
In the upcoming season, Jones’ growing media company relocates to new offices while expanding into podcasting. However, the emergence of a formidable new rival website and persistent online trolling threaten her hard-won success. Viewers can expect more complex interpersonal dynamics as Jones...

Binge’s record-setting drama series Strife has begun shooting its second season.
The Asher Keddie-starring show became Australian streamer Binge’s biggest original series premiere last year, prompting execs to set up a writers’ room for Season 2, as we revealed in January. Production is now underway in Sydney.
The comedic drama follows Evelyn Jones (Keddie), a modern, imperfect woman and publisher, on her journey from lounge room blogger to becoming a force in women’s media. It was inspired by Australian media personality and journalist Mia Freedman’s memoir Work, Strife, Balance, and is written by Australian screenwriter Sarah Scheller (The Letdown).
In Season 2, Evelyn’s empire is threatened by the arrival of a new women’s website and a troll who calls out her hypocrisy and privilege, making her double guess her instincts when she needs to be on her A game. Her company moves to new offices and ventures into podcasting,...

Next month's lineup of programming on Arrow Video's Arrow Player has been announced and as always there are a lot of gems coming in August. First, we have two Selects programs coming up from one of my favorite authors, Grady Hendrix, someone I can always turn to for book referals about specific subgenres in horror literature. Andrew van den Houten, filmmaker and producer, also offers up some prime choices as well. While we're on the topic of van den Houten, there 2009 film Offspring, based on Jack Ketchum's book by the same name, has gotten the 4K treatment and will be on the streaming platform at the end of the month. Almost a decade after Lucky McKee burst upon the indie horror scene and became a ‘Master of Horror’ in the making thanks to his directorial debut May, he teamed up with legendary cult author Jack Ketchum for his most shocking and brutal film to date: The Woman, which was itself a sequel to a previous Ketchum film adaptation titled Offspring.

Director George Miller decided to continue the Mad Max franchise with the Mad Max: Fury Road prequel Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga… but to tell the story, he had to recast the role of Furiosa. While the character was played by Charlize Theron, who wanted to return for Furiosa, in Fury Road, Miller felt de-aging technology isn’t convincing enough just yet for Theron to play a much younger version of the character, so he cast Anya Taylor-Joy in the lead role for Furiosa. Theron has said that being left out of Furiosa was “a little heartbreaking” – but that hasn’t kept her from seeing or praising the finished film.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Theron confirmed that she has seen Furiosa and, “It’s amazing, it’s a beautiful film.“
Unfortunately, Theron and Taylor-Joy still haven’t had an opportunity to meet up and discuss their experiences playing the same character.

When Sunny Leone Was Reportedly Hesitant With Bhabiji Ghar Par Hai’s Catchphrase (Photo Credit –Instagram)
Bhabiji Ghar Par Hai is one of the most popular Indian sitcoms ever. All thanks to a different kind of comedy and content that is slightly inclined toward the mature audience, the show has carved space of its own. All of its actors and their characters have become a household name over the years. Today, we’ll be looking at a throwback related to the show, which has a connection with Sunny Leone.
For those who don’t know, Sunny was part of the storyline in which she signs Aasif Sheikh, aka Vibhuti Mishra, in a film. He was cast opposite Sunny, and as expected, the entire storyline was hilarious. But do you know that the actress was reportedly hesitant to say Shubhangi Atre, aka Angoori’s catchphrase, “Sahi pakde hai”

Ed Sheeran’s childhood dream came true over the weekend. The singer and songwriter joined the Offspring for a surprise appearance at BottleRock Festival in Napa, California, where they were both booked to perform on Sunday, May 26. Standing beside the band he has long-admired would be thrilling enough on its own, but the rock collective sweetened the deal when they had him join for “Million Miles Away,” a particularly significant song for Sheeran.

Here’s the official logline: “As the world falls, young Furiosa (Taylor-Joy) is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus. She will spend the rest of her life battling to get back home.”

Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth are ready to “make it epic” when Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga barrels into cinemas on May 24, 2024! As tickets for the full-throttle prequel become available for pre-order, the final Furiosa trailer explodes onto screens with action, drama, and one particular shot that now makes me curious about an element of the film. I’m talking about the shot of the CGI-enhanced War Boy.
My knee-jerk reaction to the CGI-enhanced War Boy is one of apprehension. How large of a role does this character play in the film, and will their cartoonishness offset an otherwise incredible-looking film? I hope not. One of the more thrilling elements of Miller’s Mad Max series is the visual spectacle, and I worry the CGI-enhanced War Boy could be an “arrow to the knee.” I could be entirely off base, and I’m simply being paranoid for no good reason.

Alycia Debnam-Carey is delivering her best work in Prime Video's The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart.
The 100 and Fear the Walking Dead alum plays the titular character in the adaptation of Holly Ringland's novel.
As you'll recall if you've been watching the show on Fridays as it unspools on the streaming service, Alice is living with her grandmother after becoming an orphan.
Throughout the first four episodes, the series touched upon Alice's violent upbringing, and Friday's new episode, The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart, sends things in an emotional direction.
Twig (Leah Purcell) is trying to find Alice in the episode while Alice is off trying to piece together her past.

Three horror classics have just landed on the Bloody Disgusting-powered Screambox streaming service, which already is celebrating a massive August that kicked off with the Ghostbusters-inspired Ghastly Brothers.
Richard Attenborough’s Magic (1978) starring Anthony Hopkins and a psychotic ventriloquist dummy is the first of three movies added to Screambox, courtesy of Shout! Factory.
“Written by William Goldman, adapted from the novel he also wrote, Magic revolves around a ventriloquist seeking to renew a relationship with his former high school sweetheart,” Meagan Navarro previously wrote about the classic. “The only problem is that his dummy is the jealous type. That ventriloquist, Corky, is played by Anthony Hopkins. Unlike most killer doll horror movies, Magic favors the psychological, and Hopkins brings intensity to this twisted love story.”
She notes that this movie served as an inspiration for Don Mancini’s original Child’s Play screenplay and is currently celebrating its 45th anniversary!

James Hawes‘ Holocaust drama “One Life” will be the American Express Gala at the 67th BFI London Film Festival.
The film tells the true story of Nicholas ‘Nicky’ Winton, a young London broker who, in the months leading up to WWII, rescued 669 children from the Nazis. Fifty years later, in 1988, Winton is haunted by the fate of the children he wasn’t able to bring to safety in England. It’s not until a live television show “That’s Life” surprises him with the surviving children – now adults – seated all around him that he can finally make peace with the loss he had carried for five decades.
The cast includes Anthony Hopkins, Johnny Flynn, Lena Olin, Romola Garai, Alex Sharp, Marthe Keller, Jonathan Pryce and Helena Bonham-Carter.
Hawes said: “This film pretty much begins and ends in London and says so much about the people of this city, its heart and its history.

Amazon's YA drama The Wilds is a bingeable all-female answer to The Lord of the Flies, and it's the impeccably well-selected cast that makes it so engaging. The Wilds cast is full of generally unknown performers who have popped up in several stray indie and mainstream roles over the last few years. The show follows a group of teenage girls, most of whom are strangers, headed to what should be a peaceful retreat in Hawaii on a plane. Before they could arrive at the Dawn of Eve retreat, the plane crashes mid-flight, stranding the girls on a deserted island. However, as it turns out, the crash may not have been an accident.
As The Wilds cast get to know each other, they realize they may have more in common with one another than they initially thought. Although it seems as though The Wilds season 3 won't be happening, this doesn't change...

The Portable Door is a fantasy-adventure comedy film from Australia that is available to stream in America. Following a beleaguered intern who begins working at a magical London firm, the movie adapts the first installment in the seven-part J.W. Wells and Co. book series by English novelist Tom Holt. The novels are themselves inspired by The Sorcerer, an 1887 comic opera from Gilbert and Sullivan in which a young magician attempts to join the ranks of the prestigious London sorcery firm.
The Portable Door received a 91% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes with reviews calling it a worthy addition to the YA fantasy genre, favorably likening it to the Harry Potter franchise. Given that it follows a 23-year-old protagonist, the movie does not technically qualify as YA, but the comparison is understandable. It's another adaptation of an English book series depicting a whimsical world of magic and wizardry. When discussing the comparison,...
