Medical dramas are all the rage these days, as is evident by the recent premiere of the Noah Wyle hit The Pitt over on Max, and the continued success of Grey's Anatomy on ABC. Now Fox is looking to get in on the action with its latest, Doc, and so far, it appears as if the network has a smash hit on its hands, as the debut episode of the Barbie Kligman creation was the network's best series debut in five years.
Per Deadline, Doc delivered the best debut for a series on Fox since 9-1-1: Lone Star in 2020, with the first episode watched by 2.2 million people. That’s not what’s most impressive, however, as in its first 11 days, Doc saw a 609% increase over its live plus same-day audience to rake in 15.6 million cross-platform viewers. The second episode on Jan. 14 proved even more successful than the first,...

Freeform's scripted roster just took a hit.
The cable network has canceled Single Drunk Female and The Watchful Eye, according to Deadline.
Even worse: all episodes of both series are being removed from Hulu today, meaning that they'll only be available to purchase via iTunes and Amazon.
Single Drunk Female Season 1 was a massive hit for Freeform and Hulu, where it garnered strong viewership on streaming, but the buzz seemingly faded by the time Single Drunk Female Season 2 debuted earlier this year.
The second season launched in April and picked up with Sam a year and a half into her sobriety journey and finally feeling "like she has a life worth celebrating," the logline states.
"However, Sam quickly learns that sometimes life has other plans for her."
"Sam must figure out how to effect change where she can, sit in her discomfort when she can't, and maybe even enjoy the ride.

The Disney-owned cable network has canceled sophomore comedy Single Drunk Female and rookie drama The Watchful Eye.
The news comes four months after Disney’s Dana Walden shuffled her executive ranks and gave oversight of Freeform to Simran Sethi, the ABC development executive who previously headed up originals for the younger-skewing broadcast network with former Freeform president Tara Duncan now exclusively focused on the Onyx Collective studio.

Freeform is making some changes.
The Disney-backed network has canceled Single Drunk Female and The Watchful Eye.
Single Drunk Female has run for two seasons on the network and The Watchful Eye has been axed after one season.
Single Drunk Female follows 20-something alcoholic Samantha Fink (Sofia Black-d’Elia) who, after a public flame-out at a New York media company, is forced to seize the only chance she has to sober up and avoid jail time: moving back home with her overbearing mother, Carol (Ally Sheedy). Back in Greater Boston, Samantha sets out on a path to move past her worst self and figure out her best self. Kinda.

We won’t get to see Mandy Patinkin’s adorable real-life marriage become a TV show after all.
Showtime has scrapped four series that were in the works, according to The Hollywood Reporter, led by Seasoned, a comedy based on Patinkin and his wife Kathryn Grody’s 43-year marital bond. The comedy, which was first announced last year and earned a six-episode series order at the network, was to star Patinkin and Grody and follow “the delightfully tumultuous relationship and life of a successful, gregarious, deeply committed, slightly insane married couple.”

As TV academy voters fill out their 2023 Emmy Awards nominations ballots, they will have to consider 163 shows for Best Drama Series. This is only down by eight compared to last year. After six years of not having to limit their choices in any categories, members can now not let their selections exceed the number of eventual nominations for a given award, which will be eight in this case.
2020 and 2022 champ “Succession” is in the hunt for its third win in this category and will potentially only have to fend off two of its seven rivals from last year. “Better Call Saul” and “Yellowjackets” returned in time to meet the eligibility window of June 1, 2022 to May 31, 2023, while “Euphoria,” “Severance,” “Squid Game,” and “Stranger Things” did not. The last remaining 2022 contender, “Ozark,” officially finished its four-season run last April. Also back in the running are former winners “The Handmaid’s Tale” (2017) and “The Crown” (2021).

During his tenure as ABC’s head of entertainment, Paul Lee helped shepherd hits for the network including “Black-ish,” “Scandal,” and “How to Get Away With Murder,” but he missed having a free hand in content creation. He has that now, he told TheWrap’s Office With a View.

“Extrapolations” star Matthew Rhys said his role as a ruthless real estate developer on Apple TV+’s climate change drama “stumped” him, saying that it was “depressing to play.”
“I think part of any actor’s job is going to justify what it is the character does — this character stumped me and I found it very difficult,” Rhys told TheWrap. “Ultimately, you can see the greed, you can see the opportunistic elements to him that wants to make money, but to see someone who is very aware of what the situation is, and yet still wants to exploit those opportunities, I found depressing to play.”
In the Apple TV+ drama series, Rhys plays Junior, an out-of-touch real estate developer who does the bidding of tech billionaire Nicholas Bilton (Kit Harrington), traveling via boat amid melted ice caps alongside his girlfriend, Hannah (Heather Graham), to scope out a site for a new casino.

“The Watchful Eye” plunges viewers into the depths of a haunted Manhattan apartment building as live-in nanny Elena (Mariel Molino) seeks a hidden treasure unbeknownst to the wealthy widower (Warren Christie) who employs her.
For the pacing of the reveals concerning both Elena and The Greybourne and its residents, showrunner Emily Fox says she drew from “The White Lotus” and “Mare of Easttown” for the Freeform thriller’s “slow burn” mystery.
“You always have to figure out how many cards to turn over in each episode to make it intriguing enough that people will want to come back and find out the answer, but not make it so complicated,” Fox told TheWrap. “We took a lot of inspiration from shows like ‘The White Lotus’ and ‘Mare of Easttown’ and some of these other slow burn mysteries where a lot happens that doesn’t necessarily solve your big mystery, but which takes interest you closer,...

Coming from a background in Spanish physical comedy, Mariel Molino, who plays a nanny with a sinister secret in Freeform’s new Hitchcockian thriller series “The Watchful Eye,” faced a “learning curve” while filming ominous scenes as she transformed big movements into small specifics full of nuance and imagination.
“Everything that you think you might have to play up, actually, you have to be a lot more small about and you have to be more specific and nuanced,” Molino told TheWrap. “I really learned to trust my instinct and my imagination … and use the camera as my co-star because a lot of the scenes were me alone and me reacting to a sound that wasn’t there, or a person that is not there.”

Careful, they’re watching. No one is safe from stolen glances and hidden stares in the new Freeform original series, The Watchful Eye. A mystery thriller series that centers on a grisly murder, it promises to be one of winter’s juiciest new binges. If you’re growing frigid from the snow and cold winds of winter, grab a blanket and cozy up to the fiery new series. The thriller is created by Julie Durk. Durk also co-executive produces alongside Ryan Seacrest (American Idol), Nina Wass (Insatiable), Andrea Shay (Insatiable), and Jeffrey Reiner (The Affair). Taking a formulaic mystery whodunit and giving it a makeover by dressing it to the nines with a haunted, posh apartment complex and sinful tenants, The Watchful Eye is all smoke and mirrors. Mariel Molino (Promised Land) stars in the series as Elena Santos, a complicated woman with secrets of her own as she infiltrates The Greybourne,...
