Netflix's comedy slate has shrunk a little further as the streamer has canceled its coming-of-age comedy series, Freeridge, two months after it aired for just a single season, Variety reveals. The show was a spin off On My Block a hit comedy on Netflix that ran for four seasons. The streamer had aimed to continue this success but despite a few modifications including a supernatural spin, Freeridge failed to charm audiences with the same intensity as its predecessor.

Netflix has canceled the On My Block spinoff Freeridge after one season, Deadline has confirmed.

Freeridge is an 8-episode, coming-of-age comedy following sibling rivals Gloria (Keyla Monterroso Mejia) and Ines (Bryana Salaz) and their friends Demi (Ciara Riley Wilson) and Cameron (Tenzing Norgay Trainor) who have unleashed a curse bringing dark misfortune into their lives. Michael Solomon and Zaire Adams also star.

Fans of the original series saw the return of On My Block favorites Paula Garcés as Geny Martinez, Eric Gutierrez as Ruben Martinez, Eme Ikwuakor as Dwayne Turner, and Raushanah Simmons as Fran Turner. Peggy Blow, who played Marisol Martinez aka Abuelita in On My Block, is also listed as cast.

The series was co-created, executive produced and showrun by Lauren Iungerich alongside co-creators and executive producers Jamie Uyeshiro, Eddie Gonzalez, Jeremy Haft, and Jamie Dooner.

Netflix has canceled “On My Block” spinoff “Freeridge” after just one season, TheWrap has learned.

The eight-episode YA series starred Keyla Monterroso Mejia and Bryana Salaz, as, respectively, rival sisters Gloria and Ines, and featured an entirely Poc cast.

“Freeridge,” which premiered on Feb. 2, was ordered to series in September 2021 when it was announced that “On My Block” would be ending with its fourth season.

Although the cursed box appears to be a McGuffin at first, the box is actually a connection to a beloved On My Block character, Abuelita.

Abuelita, who is referred to by her given name of Marisol in Netflix’s Freeridge, is one of the most iconic On My Block characters and was hugely important to the original show. In On My Block, Abuelita was a central figure not only due to her role as Ruby’s grandmother, but because of her involvement in finding the RollerWorld money.

As a great man once said, “February: It’s the worst month of the year, but it’s an honest month.” While I disagree with the “worst” part — August, and its sweltering heat, is abysmal— I can’t dispute the honesty inherent to February, especially when it comes to television. The cold weather, early sunsets, and lack of legitimate holidays can leave us exhausted, and when worn out, TV is often the quickest, simplest reprieve.

And in February, there’s no pretending. It’s too early for the networks to release their Emmy darlings, and too late to premiere their most-hyped projects. Instead, audiences are force-fed a whole lot of junk. Sure, there may be a few tantalizing tidbits stuffed into these big ol’ nothing burgers — a favorite actor or an entrancing subject — but the overall result is the same: a lot of bad food, that you may just have to eat anyway.

“Freeridge,” the spinoff to Netflix’s coming-of-age dramedy “On My Block,” is not trying to recreate the mystical realism of its predecessor, according to leads Keyla Monterroso Mejia and Bryana Salaz, who anchor the series with their brutally honest portrayal of two sisters often at odds with one another.

“We were all huge fans,” Mejia — best-known for her scene-stealing turns in “Abbott Elementary” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm” — told TheWrap of “On My Block.” “Funny enough, we knew — we were casted in it — and we all watched the fourth season together. Oh, my God, justice for Spooky! But that’s neither here nor there.”

Despite following a new core four in the title neighborhood as they uncover the mythical happenings around them, co-creator Lauren Iungerich was steadfast in her belief that “Freeridge” would neither replicate nor rehash the four seasons of the show that established its universe.

As an entirely original spinoff, Freeridge includes a wealth of exciting new characters, making it a worthy addition to the expanding franchise. Freeridge shares the same creative team as its predecessor, with Lauren Iungerich, Eddie Gonzalez, and Jeremy Haft working alongside Jamie Uyeshiro, and Jamie Dooner – all of whom previously collaborated on Netflix's hit On My Block. This weekend, Netflix is adding a documentary about a famous 1990s icon, a documentary series about a one-of-a-kind millionaire, a teen comedy-drama TV series, and an adventure drama movie. Last weekend, the streaming giant welcomed the animated movie Minions: The Rise of Gru, the Indian documentary Black Sunshine Baby!, the musical comedy-drama Begin Again, the Bollywood movie An Action Hero, and the documentary Hallelujah: Leonard Cohan, A Journey, A Song, along with the thriller TV series Lockwood & Co., the comedy movie You People, and the Italian comedy The Price of Family.

The cast of the "On My Block" spinoff, "Freeridge," promised the new show would bring all the high jinks, mystery, romance, and life lessons that fans of the original loved, and the series - which hit Netflix on Feb. 2 - certainly delivers.

"Freeridge" season one follows a new core four of high-school friends - Keyla Monterroso Mejia (Gloria), Tenzing Norgay Trainor (Cameron), Ciara Riley Wilson (Demi), and Bryana Salaz (Inez) - as they navigate friendship, love, class conflict, grief, and - believe it or not - a curse wreaking havoc on their lives.

With appearances from familiar "On My Block" characters sprinkled throughout the fast-paced season - like Ruby's parents, Geny (Paula Garces) and Ruben (Eric Neil Gutierrez), as Gina and Inez's neighbors; Jamal (Brett Gray) calling in with some Roller World intel; and an Abuelita look-alike - "Freeridge" packs a punch for old and new fans alike.
