Un buen día

This movie has become some sort of a joke among my friends and due to a lack of any better plan I suggested we should watched it and that we did, online, for it is impossible to get this otherwise and well... it was a tour de force to be honest, when you set aside the poor acting, the lacking of a story altogether, the awful editing, the way the cut the scenes without any logic, etc etc etc you have fun, quite a lot actually; the only way you can carry on to the very end is by making remarks most of the time and laughing a lot, for there is not any other way you can approach this seriously without walking away after the first 5 minutes.

Now, I must say, Lucía, the leading... "actress", she should try something else, any would do. Acting is not for her, the "leading" actor tried and yet failed but her... those phony lines, she has no idea how to act them, at all, she swings from one mood to another for no good reason, her character goes from suicidal to maniac to being OK to God knows what.

My theory is that the director, who is now being prosecuted for stealing money from the government after making 2 shows that were never aired and lied about budgets, etc, bagged up the money and came up with... this, whatever that means, so she could claim some more money, otherwise I can't understand why this lousy attempt to copy Before Sunset (in the worst way ever) saw the light.

With what indeed seems like a lot less budget, the conditions in which "Un Buen Día" came to be find an amazing resemblance to the ones found in Tommy Wiseau's "The Room"; a totally unprofessional movie, with shameful performances in the main roles leaving any mildly good acting to secondary characters like the ones played by Andrea del Boca here, or Greg Sestero in "The Room" - and last but not least, a stubborn, rich sponsor who insists his movie will be a dream come true and will stop at nothing to achieve such a thing, even if that means making a lousy movie in the end. "Un Buen Día" is infested with pointless dialogues that fail to tell the audience anything important about the main characters, elongating the plot beyond any measure. It is absolutely confusing, and often treacherously reflects the writer Enrique Torres' political opinion directly into the characters lines but without any valid arguments, let alone having those lines anything to do with the already boring and pointless plot that rarely finds its way out of the simple "dude wants to get laid with girl" idea. Just like Wiseau's movie, Enrique Torres' "Un Buen Día" is a movie intended to be entirely serious, but ends up being comedic; if anyone is interested in watching the whole thing through, it is because so many horrific details can make the viewer explode into laughter. Maybe, just maybe, this has a shot to become a cult classic like "The Room", but until then, I'll judge it for what it intends to be, and from that point of view, this movie fails miserably.

Movies about losers usually don't get the recognition they deserve; take for example Kaurismaki's 'La vie de bohème', maybe his best movie, or Ettore Scola's 'Romanze di un giovane povero', people don't want to be reminded about the losers, the ones that finish at second place or worse, and "A good day" is not an exception to this rule. If someone had tried consciously to make a movie that is a mixture of Richard Linklater and Edward Wood styles, she would never have achieved such an outstanding result. Right when the movie starts you begin to notice some bold stylist choices (background actors in the foreground, abrupt little spatial-temporal cuts in the editing, dialog completely out of a soap opera) , and it goes on and on relentlessly until the very end. First you dismiss the movie for its evident lack of Qualité, then you start to mock it as campy, hilariously quoting its dialog or joking on the plot twist, but after that you might realize that this movie has passion on it and is the work of somebody with a heart; that the two characters (a charming bohemian loser and a grown up spoiled brat) probably would talk like that in real life. The force of nature is refreshingly powerful in this movie. After sunrise and before sunset, there's a good day.
