After two tours of the paranormal-plagued Collingwood Psychiatric Hospital, Colin Minihan and Stuart Ortiz, the writing/directing duo known as The Vicious Brothers, are stepping out of the asylum’s haunted halls and into the woods for their latest film, Extraterrestrial, now available on VOD. We have three new clips from the movie that show what happens when you engage visitors from the sky.
“From The Vicious Brothers, the creators of Grave Encounters comes a different kind of encounter, one of ‘Extraterrestrial’ origin. Still reeling from her parents’ divorce, April (Daytime Emmy winner, Brittany Allen) is dragged back to the vacation cabin she spent fond summers at as a child accompanied by a group of friends. Her trip down memory lane takes a dramatic and terrifying turn when a fireball descends from the sky and explodes in the nearby woods. Lead by her boyfriend, played by Freddie Stroma (Harry Potter & The Half Blooded Prince,...

During the Sdcc we had a chance to get the skinny on WWE's Leprechaun: Origins, starring WWE Supertstar Dylan "Hornswoggle" Postl. Read on for the scoop from Dylan and director Zach Lipovsky.
"For me the biggest and coolest challenge was that Leprechauns aren't something that people are generally frightened by," Lipovsky (pictured) tells us of the character and his idea for how the film should play out.
"We asked ourselves, can we do something that would be legitimately scary for people, and if so, what would that look like? Anything was on the table so that was really fun. It was fun to come on to the project and make it something that honors the mythology and is iconic and be totally fresh with our approach. We looked into making the origin story of a creature that maybe thousands of years ago the Celtics met in a cave or something that was really scary.

The first official poster from the WWE's Leprechaun: Origins, starring WWE Supertstar Dylan "Hornswoggle" Postl as the ever-so-evil title character, has arrived and it's gold-hording good! Check it out!
Leprechaun: Origins also stars Stephanie Bennett, Teach Grant (The Tall Man, Devour, Repeaters, “Cult”), Bruce Blain (“Supernatural”), Adam Boys, and Brendan Fletcher ("The Killing," Freddy vs. Jason, 13 Eerie).
The original Leprechaun, which featured comedic elements, followed an evil leprechaun searching for his pot of gold while avoiding four-leaf clovers. “The tone [of Origins] is going to be a little darker, a little more traditional horror than the Warwick Davis ones that people remember, trying to find a way to please fans of that genre; but at the same time this is really being played for scares,” said WWE president Michael Luisi in an earlier interview.
Producers are keeping details of Harris Wilkinson's script under wraps to keep the franchise's new direction a secret.

A Groundhog Day-esque action drama, Repeaters is one of those films that will fly under the radar of many despite its impressive pedigree. Penned by Arne Olsen, who has one hell of a writing CV having worked on Red Scorpion, Cop and a Half and Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie amongst many others, the film follows three troubled youths – Kyle, Sonia and Mike – at a drug-rehab center who, following an electric shock, end up repeating the same day over and over again. The trio quickly embrace their new gift, having all the fun they could ever want which includes committing crimes without any fear of reprisals. However once the fun starts to get a little too dangerous Kyle and Sonia decide they want to use their “gift” to help people,...

Carl Bessai's Repeaters will be released in select Canadian theatres on April 22 after a presence at the latest Vancouver International Film Festival.
The story revolves around drug addicts at a rehab centre who fight their inner demons and live the same day over and over again. While each have some degree of volition and are able to use this day to play out fantasies seemingly with no long term consequences, none has power to change the truth that tomorrow will be the same as yesterday. Ultimately, all are forced to make choices that will affect not only their lives but the lives of everyone around them.
The film stars Dustin Milligan, Amanda Crew, Richard de Klerk, Benjamin Ratner, Gabrielle Rose, Teach Grant, Anja Savcic and Emily Perkins.

When it comes to making movies, Carl Bessai knows what he’s doing. The prolific filmmaker pumps them out on average of one per year and this year he’s outdone himself with not one but two films. One is a family comedy titled Fathers&Sons (a must for fans of dysfunctional family comedies) and the second of the duo and Bessai’s first foray into genre film making, is Repeaters, a film many have compared to Groundhog Day based on the premise alone but which has much more in common with Bessai’s previous films than with the comedic classic.
Kyle, Sonia and Weeks are in rehab, counting through the days (and steps) until it’s all over. Today is Step 9: making amends. The group gets their day passes and...

HollywoodNews.com: Indie film hottie Richard de Klerk (“Cole”), whose new “Repeaters” thriller has been widely compared to “Groundhog Day,” tells us that the G-word “did come up on the set and it has to. You can’t argue with Bill Murray and an amazing film. But I think enough time has passed that we can take another look at the premise.”
Certainly “Repeaters” takes the idea of characters caught in a day that repeats over and over — and takes it in an entirely different direction from the 1993 rom com. In “Repeaters,” there are two young men (Dustin Milligan and de Klerk) and a young woman (Amanda Crew) in drug rehab. And, as de Klerk says, “it gets into the whole moral compass of a person.” With all the normal laws of time and society are suspended, will a person act honorably, embrace immorality or completely flip out?...

Henry’s Crime
After living in Buffalo the past four years, I was intrigued to see how director Malcolm Venville (44 Inch Chest) would capture the disparate lifestyle and rundown city with his latest feature Henry’s Crime. Starring Keanu Reeves, James Caan and Vera Farmiga in script from Sacha Gervasi (Anvil), he tells the story of a tollbooth worker who goes to jail for a robbery he was mistakenly involved with. After getting out of prison, he plans to do the crime he did the time for.
Venville attempts to balance comedy and drama with very little success. Keanu Reeves simply can’t pull off a dramatic performance. It’s impossible to buy his relationship with Farmiga. His lifeless demeanor matches the dry tone of the film. There is absolutely no style to be found here. What could have been the most interesting aspect, the actual “heist,” is done in...

It takes real guts to borrow the precise concept from Groundhog Day, and even more to not acknowledge the film's influence at all. And even though Repeaters does much less with the genius "repeating a day" gimmick than Harold Ramis and Bill Murray, it's an earnest and ridiculous thriller about drug addicts that's perversely fun to watch as well. It masquerades at first as a story about redemption and quite literally making amends, but once Repeaters embraces its trashy action and violence, it's an oddly compelling and energetic adventure. Be warned-- I may have only enjoyed this so much because it came in the middle of a film festival, and watching a movie with zero subtext and limited narrative logic was an odd pleasure. But Carl Bessai's film, still looking for distribution, really does have a shaggy appeal. Kyle (Dustin Milligan), Sonia (Amanda Crew) and Weeks (Richard de Klerk...

If you happened to have caught either of Canadian filmmaker Carl Bessai's last two films -- the familial drama 'Mothers & Daughters' or the wrong-side-of-the-tracks romance 'Cole' -- you'd go into his latest, 'Repeaters,' expecting a simple and thoughtful indie drama. Not this time around. It's been a crazy couple of days at Tiff — yesterday's back-to-back interviews in our media lounge included Dustin Milligan, Amanda Crew and Richard de Klerk ("Repeaters"), "Bunraku’s" Josh Hartnett and Guy Moshe, Oscar-nominee Fridrik Thor Fridriksson (“Mamma Gógó”), Debs Gardner-Paterson (“Africa United”), and documentary filmmakers Risteard Ó Domhnaill ("The Pipe") and Shlomi Eldar ("Precious Life”).
Ron Perlman came by with Kevin McKidd for photos by Scott McDermott. Ron had his cigar in hand, apparently a crutch he rarely leaves home without.
We dropped down to the Creative Coalition's event for George Hickenlooper's "Casino Jack" — Hickenlooper was there, as was thesp and theater director Kevin Spacey. Hickenlooper addressed the assembled cocktailers, sharing tales of his remembrances of the enlisted men fighting to avoid the road to Vietnam and the education he absorbed from being around a father who, despite his brilliance politically, perhaps wasn't there emotionally.

The Vancouver International Film Festival is my baby. In its 29th year, this is the event I look forward to every year. The lists I've kept through the year come out and I eagerly look through the list of titles in search of those little gems and every year Viff responds with a huge assortment of titles. This year's festival is no different.
Some of the titles we're most eagerly anticipating include Tsumetai Nettaigyo’s Cold Fish (trailer), Gareth Edwards’ Monsters (trailer, review), Jo Sung-Hee’s apocalyptic road movie End of Animal, Carl Bessai’s Repeaters (trailer) and Xavier Dolan's Heartbeats (trailer, review).
There's loads more so be sure to check the titles (so far) after the break. Many more to be announced in the coming days.

The first trailer for Canadian filmmaker Carl Bessai’s (Cole) latest movie, Repeaters, is now online. Something like a cross between Groundhog Day and Trainspotting, this mind-bending thriller tells the story of three young addicts in a rehabilitation center — played by Dustin Milligan, Amanda Crew, and Richard de Klerk — who find themselves repeating the same day over and over again, each responding to the situation in very different, often violent, ways. The movie will debut next week at the 35th Annual Toronto International Film Festival. It does not yet have a U.S. release date.

In April, we saw the first images of the upcoming Canadian thriller Repeaters. Now, we get to see a new poster and a first trailer.
This film shot in Mission, B.C. was directed by Carl Bessai (Normal).
A release should take place in 2011.

Ironically, one of the things many of us tend to overlook every year at the Toronto International Film Festival is the line-up of interesting Canadian films. I guess I only have my own biases to blame, but this year there are quite a few intriguing flicks from The Great White North including Bruce McDonald's Trigger [1], Daniel Cockburn's You Are Here [2], and Mike Goldbach's Daydream Nation [3], not to mention Fubar II [4] and this film by Carl Bessai. Repeaters is basically being billed as the concept behind the Bill Murray comedy classic Groundhog Dog re-imagined as an "aggressive, fast-paced thriller." The basic idea is that a group of people in rehab get a one day pass to go back into the world to make amends, only to find that they wake up the next day and relive it all over again. And again. Slowly their behaviour becomes more bold and...

Repeaters Poster ArtWhat would you do if you woke up on the same day everyday? What would you do if everyday repeated? These are the types of questions asked of characters Kyle (Dustin Milligan, Sonia (Amanda Crew) and Weeks (Richard de Klerk) in the film Repeaters. These three are recovering drug addicts and they must make amends with family members who they have hurt through their drug use. This film is similar to Harold Ramis' Groundhog Day where life repeats until characters learn a lesson and readers can see Repeaters at the Toronto International Film Festival beginning September 13th. Have a read of the interesting premise below and take a peek at the film's trailer.
The synopsis for Repeaters here:
"On a random Wednesday, the residents of a rehab centre in Mission, B.C. are granted a rare one-day-pass to venture back into the world and make amends with those they have wronged.

A little while back I wrote an article about the poster release for the upcoming film Repeaters, which is premiering at Tiff 2010. Well tonight, Hitflix has premiered the trailer for this darker version of Groundhog Day.
The trailer, embedded below, is fascinating and much more fast paced than I thought it would be. I’m actually excited now because the brief synopsis I posted in the other article didn’t really do much in terms of enticement but after watching the trailer everything has changed.
The trailer doesn’t exactly give us a lot in terms of where the characters are or why they are there, but it does give us some insight in terms of some of the struggles they encounter, what they do with themselves, and how the repetition of the same day is affecting them personally.

Below is the trailer for Repeaters, a low-budget Canadian indie sci-fi flick. It's an interesting concept -- three reprobates, after being forced into a rehab program, find themselves repeating the same day, over and over. Each remembers the previous iteration of the day, and by making the trio slowly turn on each other, director Carl Bessai and writer Arne Olsen managed to inject a bit of freshness into the idea. Will it work? I have no clue. It stars Amanda Crew, who I find quite charming and was decent enough in the incredibly stupid, yet strangely entertaining Sex Drive, as well as Dustin Milligan anf Richard de Klerk. Bonus points for co-starring Emily Perkins (Juno, Ginger Snaps).
It looks intriguing. It apparently did well at the Toronto Independent Film Festival, too. Despite my general distrust of, disdain for, and aversion to Canadians, it's got promise. Take a look.

One of the films that we'll try to check out at the Toronto Festival is a sci-fi flick called "Repeaters," which takes the "Groundhog Day" concept and turns it into a violent thriller. Today we have trailer for it, which you can check out below. Plot: A gritty mind-bending thriller about three twenty-somethings - Sonia, Kyle, Weeks - who find themselves stuck in an impossible time labyrinth, where each day they awaken to the same terrifying day as before. "Repeaters" is directed by Canadian filmmaker Carl Bessai and is written by Arne Olsen (All Dogs Go to Heaven 2, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie, Cop and a Half). Trailer:...

Another film which is going to be premiered at Toronto International Film Festival has been previewed. "Repeaters" has got a promo trailer which follows three young outsiders whose days inexplicably repeat as they struggle to battle personal demons and addictions.
These three rehab patients are given a one-day pass to make amends with their families. Kyle tries to reconnect with his sister, Sonia avoids her ailing dad, who subsequently passes away, and Weeks sets off to see his violent father in prison. It's a terrible day for each of them, and they cannot find their way out.
While each have some degree of volition and are able to use this day to play out fantasies seemingly with no long term consequences, none has power to change the truth that tomorrow will be the same as yesterday. Ultimately, all are forced to make choices that will affect not only their lives...

Interesting fact: veteran Canadian director Carl Bessai has had a film featured at Tiff every year since 2006 – Cole (2009), Mothers & Daughters (2008), Normal (2007) and Unnatural & Accidental (2006). This year, he brings a dark, fast-paced thriller to the Festival, Repeaters, starring Dustin Milligan, Amanda Crew, and Richard de Klerk. The story focuses on three young addicts in a rehab centre who attempt to make a path to recovery but live through a strange, eerie repetitiveness in each day. A new trailer popped up today for the film and can be seen below. There’s a little bit too much unrealistic gunfire for our tastes, but it does seem to be loaded with action and thrills.

Well this is definitely on my "radar" now. HitFix just debuted an early trailer for a "gritty, sci-fi film" called Repeaters, from director Carl Bessai, that will be premiering at the Toronto Film Festival next month. The film plays with the Groundhog Day stuck-in-a-time-loop concept, but twists it into a "aggressive, fast-paced thriller" that addresses the morals of starting over with a clean slate every day in some of the most extreme ways (you'll see). It looks okay, not great, but wait - why did a random motorbike just fly across the screen? Why aren't there more explosions! Kidding, of course, but that was just a bit cheesy. Check this out below! It seems like only yesterday that we last reported on casting for Shark Night 3D - mostly because it was. And now here's some more: Sara Paxton, Katharine McPhee and Dustin Milligan have signed up to join director David R. Ellis' aquatic monster movie.Paxton you may know (but probably don't) from her turn as a mermaid in Aquamarine - which might give her an advantage in trying to escape this movie's terrifying freshwater shark. McPhee was an American Idol finalist who's appeared in The House Bunny. And Milligan, funnily enough, has appeared in small roles in lots of things but takes a bigger role in Repeaters, the trailer for which just came out today. The cast also includes Joel David Moore, Chris Carmack, Alyssa Diaz and Sinqua Walls, and shooting starts later this month in Louisiana. Start placing your bets now on how many of their characters will survive the full 90-ish minutes.

The concept of the time loop, and characters who begin to realise that they are repeating a certain period of time, is not exactly a new one in the science fiction field. But it continues to be used as a plot twist in films, with the latest occurrence cropping up in the dark thriller Repeaters. Now there’s a trailer online.Repeaters follows Sonia, Kyle and Weeks, three cynical types who are sick of the shallow peer groups they hang out with. After giving in to their criminal impulses, they’re shoved into mandatory rehab, and allowed out on a day pass so they can start making amends to those they’ve wronged. But something is different this day – they begin to realise that everything re-sets each morning. It’s not long before they begin to take full advantage of the situation to go wild every time, knowing that whatever...

Repeaters, a film premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival, has just released its first poster in anticipation for its worldwide debut.
The film, which is directed by Canadian Carl Bessai (Severed), has been described as a dark Groundhog day except instead of it being Groundhog day it is actually just one of the most miserable days of your life.
The Tiff film description:
Veteran director Carl Bessai returns with a tense thriller that follows three young addicts in a rehabilitation centre. Each day they live the same events over and over – a situation each responds to in radically different ways.
The film stars Dustin Milligan (Gunless), Amanda Crew (Charlie St. Cloud), and Richard de Klerk (Bang Bang You’re Dead).
While the poster doesn’t really tell you too much I still think its color use is pretty cool, specifically the blood red. Other than that I think it...

Cinematical is happy to bring you this exclusive poster for Repeaters, the latest from Canadian indie filmmaker Carl Bessai, to be screened during this year's Toronto International Film Festival. (Full poster after the jump.) Imagine, for a second, if you didn't repeat a mundane Groundhog Day, but rather one singular, terrible day. You aren't alone in the experience -- you have two others with you -- but you find that you have to contend not only with the emotional slap of that same day over and over again, but also with one friend's increasing disconnect from reality.
The film follows three rehab patients who are given a one-day pass to make amends with their families. Kyle (Dustin Milligan, 90210) tries to reconnect with his sister, Sonia (Amanda Crew, Charlie St. Cloud) avoids her ailing dad, who subsequently passes away, and Weeks (Richard de Klerk, Cole) sets off to see his violent father in prison.

The organizers at the Toronto International Film Festival have put together one hell of an impressive line-up that has grown significantly since my first list announcing the Galas and Special Presentations, a pair of lists that have also grown since then.
The lists have grown to include Massy Tadjedin's Last Night starring Keira Knightley, Sam Worthington, Eva Mendes and Guillaume Canet, which will serve as the closing night film.
It's also grown to include Danny Boyle's 127 Hours starring James Franco. Boyle recently spoke about the film at Movie Con and told the audience there it may be a challenge to watch saying, "It's a lovely way of doing a new kind of filmmaking, really. We want it to be a challenge to you [the audience] to see if you can sit and watch it."

I love Carl Bessai. The Canadian film maker is a bit of a superstar on the West Coast, making enough films in a year to rival Bruce McDonald and as Bruce sort of hit his stride with the release of Pontypool (review) (all of a sudden everyone and their mother knows about Bruce), I think Bessai is on the brink of a similar explosion, especially if Repeaters is as good as it looks and sounds and considering that Bessai is only getting better with each new film, I’d say the time to jump on the Bessai love bandwagon is now.
Written by Arne Olsen, Repeaters stars new Bessai regular Richard de Klerk (he appeared in last year’s Cole and also stars in Bessai’s upcoming Fathers&Sons), Dustin Milligan and Amanda Crew as three drug addicts who start experiencing a strange phenomenon while in rehab and no, it...
