"The Age of Adaline" — directed by Lee Toland Krieger and released in 2015 — is, put simply, a movie centered around the idea that Blake Lively is an inhumanly beautiful creature. This makes it hard to imagine that anyone else could have played Adaline Bowman, a woman unstuck in time who's incapable of aging. What you may not know, though, is that "Grey's Anatomy" veteran Katherine Heigl was originally supposed to play the titular role but ended up dropping out ... so what happened here?
Heigl, who originated the role of Dr. Izzie Stevens on the long-running ABC medical drama — and left the series partway through its 6th season — was initially cast in the film against Angela Lansbury, who was supposed to play Adaline's much older daughter, Flemming. Long before the movie came out, Heigl exited the project in 2010, according to a report in Deadline; at first, the outlet said that Heigl's departure was due to on-set strife.

Some of the best TV characters have executed ridiculous, illogical, and over-the-top schemes. The Golden Girls' Sophia tried to sell bottled water from her garden hose, a scheme that was absurd from the start. Maeby and George Michael's attempt to make out on Arrested Development was both ridiculous and naive, highlighting Maeby's foolishness.

Over the years, sitcoms have aired some of the most illogical, ridiculous, and over-the-top schemes on TV screens, but some stood out more than others. The title of situational comedy was often applied by shows rather literally and highlighted the creativity and sneakiness of some of the best TV characters of all time. The types of plans, however, were often varied.

We might be entering the dog days of summer but Hulu isn’t slowing down. The streamer’s list of new releases for August 2023 is a pretty impressive collection of content.
The biggest Hulu original this month is season 3 of true crime comedy Only Murders in the Building on Aug. 8. This time around Meryl Streep and Paul Rudd are joining the already-stacked cast that features Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez. This season’s central murder appears to take place at a theater (outside the building) but I think we’ll let it slide.
That’s far from the only worthwhile original in August as Aug. 2 sees the premiere of the third and final season of superb comedy Reservation Dogs. That will be followed by South Korean sci-fi series Moving on Aug. 9, Solar Opposites season 4 on Aug. 14, and A Murder at the End of the World on Aug. 29. Of course,...

With its list of new releases for August 2023, Prime Video is relying on a heaping dose of fun library movies.
The first of the month brings a big influx of worthwhile flicks, including Galaxy Quest, Saw, F9: The Fast Saga, and Jurassic Park (the last two via Amazon’s Freevee free streaming option). Then some other recents hits arrive later on like the appropriately titled Cocaine Bear on Aug. 15 and the Chris Pine-starring Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves on Aug. 25.
August also sees the arrival of a major Amazon Original movie in the form of Red, White & Royal Blue. Based on a New York Times bestselling book, this LGBTQ romance follows a U.S. president’s son and a British prince. Over on the TV side of things, Prime Video subscribers can check out the Sigourney Weaver project The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart on Aug. 4 and Harlan Coben’s Shelter on Aug.

It’s been quite a year for Prime Video already. The service is seeing huge success with its second season of “The Summer I Turned Pretty,” and its international espionage thriller “Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan” turned in its fourth and final season earlier this summer.
Unfortunately for Tolkien fans, there’s no new season of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” to dive into this August, but there are some fantastic titles coming to Prime Video all throughout the month. From Prime Video originals to hot new movies, here are the top five titles The Streamable is most excited about on the service in August 2023.

The incredibly popular critic aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes has been the go-to for cinema enthusiasts for 25 years, but some actors with the lowest scores may feel differently about its popularity. With its extensive library of everything hot or not, and the hallmark "certified fresh" stamp of quality, Rotten Tomatoes has become a tastemaker for the TV and movie industry. So it means something when an actor's entire career is dotted with neon green splats of awful reviews. While it's true many hands make a film, there is something to be said about the performances at the heart of each production and whether they resonate with an audience.
With critics and audiences often in disagreement with one another, it is often far more telling when they actually agree. Compiling this list was a deep dive of both audience and critic scores and using both the average and median to best ascertain...

You may not recognize Julie Anne Robinson’s name, but she’s an industry “lifer.” She’s directed studio movies such as “One For The Money” and “The Last Song” alongside a wide range of television series including “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” “Weeds,” “Pushing Daisies,” “Masters of Sex” and “The Good Place.” It was her collaborations with Shondra Rhimes on episodes of the seminal dramas “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Scandal” that found her front and center directing the first episode of “Bridgerton.” A blockbuster series that has made Rhimes massive producing deal with Netflix more than worth its weight in gold.

Amazon Prime’s new releases in June 2020 is fairly lacking in original material. That’s to be expected for a streaming service that focuses on quality over quantity to begin with now going through a pandemic content crunch.
Standup special Gina Brillon: The Floor Is Lava, Joseph Gordon-Levitt film 7500, and Pete the Cat season 2 are the only originals arriving this month. And that’s fine as Amazon is about to be home to one of 2019’s most fun films. That’s right – Knives Out makes its debut on June 12. It might be awhile before we get to see the next Benoit Blanc mystery so hopefully this will tide us over.
June 1 also sees the arrival of Dirty Dancing, Kingpin, and the tragically underrated Sex Drive. It’s not the most impressive month Amazon has ever had, but at least you still get free shipping.

June 2020 is set to be a big month for the whole streaming Disney family. Not only will ESPN+ have the entirety of The Last Dance on its servers for late-adopting sports fans to catch up with, but Disney+ will be premiering its long-awaited Artemis Fowl film. Over on its biggest streaming service in Hulu, however, Disney is taking things a bit more slowly.
This month finds only three major original releases for Hulu. Animated medieval comedy Crossing Swords premieres on June 12, then Ya love story Love Victor and cooking show Taste the Nation with Padma Lakshmi both arrive on June 19. All in all, that’s not a bad haul for originals for the typically slow summer months.
June 1 sees a pretty impressive crop of movies coming to Hulu’s library as well. October Sky, The X-Files (1998), and Casino will all be ready to stream at the beginning of the month.

2016 claimed a long list of entertainers, but the grim reaper’s most unexpected one-two punch came between the final two holidays with the death of movie icons Carrie Fisher on December 12 and her mother Debbie Reynolds a mere 36 hours later. With the premiere of the documentary about the pair, “Bright Lights” on HBO this weekend, we at the Geeks site thought we should take a look at their considerable contributions to film.
Let’s start with Carrie, who was born in Hollywood, USA on October 21, 1956, the daughter of Debbie and singer/actor Eddie Fisher. She appeared on stage with her mother throughout the late 60’s and early 70’s, even getting her first small screen credit in the 1969 TV movie “Debbie Reynolds and the Sound of Children”. It wasn’t until 1975, when she would make her big screen debut opposite Warren Beatty (quite an arrival) in Hal Ashby’s hit Shampoo.

Debbie Reynolds died Wednesday afternoon as a result of a stroke, a family source confirmed to Deadline. She was 84 and had been taken to Cedars Sinai Medical Center complaining of difficulty breathing, just a day after her daughter Carrie Fisher died at 60 after a heart attack.
A teenage beauty queen, Reynolds had moved to MGM after some unproductive years at Warner Bros., where her only film of note was The Daughter Of Rosie O’Grady. She will forever be remembered as Kathy Selden, the fledgling actress of serious intent who wins the heart of Gene Kelly’s Don Lockwood in the 1952 Freed Unit classic Singin’ In The Rain. The infectious musical comedy tracked the end of the silent film era and the emergence of sound through the romance between Lockwood, who makes the transition effortlessly, and Kathy, who ends up voicing Don’s erstwhile co-star, Jean Hagen’s New Yawkish-pitched Lina Lamont.
A teenage beauty queen, Reynolds had moved to MGM after some unproductive years at Warner Bros., where her only film of note was The Daughter Of Rosie O’Grady. In 2008, Katherine Heigl weathered more controversy in the span of a year than most actors deal with their entire careers. In addition to the actress's insinuation that the writers of Grey's Anatomy didn't give her "the material" in the show's fourth season to warrant Emmy consideration for her performance, she also drew ire for calling Knocked Up "a little sexist," telling Vanity Fair in a now-infamous interview: "It paints the women as shrews, as humorless and uptight, and it paints the men as lovable, goofy, fun-loving guys. … I had a hard time with it, on some days. I'm playing such a bitch; why is she being such a killjoy? Why is this how you're portraying women? Ninety-eight percent of the time it was an amazing experience, but it was hard for me to love the movie." In a wide-ranging interview on Wednesday's Howard Stern Show, Heigl addressed both controversies, but...

When Johnny Depp‘s mustache comedy “Mortdecai” brought in less than $5 million on opening weekend, it marked the A-list actor’s fifth straight box office bomb. But he’s far from the only top billed actor to endure a tanker or two.
The 51-year-old film star and his co-stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Ewan McGregor and Olivia Munn are in fact in very good company.

Katherine Heigl's red carpet style in a word? Timeless. The State of Affairs actress is a seasoned pro on the red carpet, and her classic styles proves it. But don't take our word for it—take a look at her best red carpet moments for yourselves! Back at the 2006 Emmys, the actress radiated Old Hollywood glamour in a nude beaded Escada halter gown. Fast forward to this year's Emmys, and Katherine worked the same shimmering shade into an even more sophisticated satin rendition of the gown. Switching up her go-to color palette, the Emmy award-winning actress sizzled in a fiery one-shoulder Hervé L. Leroux design at the One for the Money premiere in 2012. And whew, did she look...

Masters of Sex Season 2, Episode 11: “One for the Money, Two for the Show”
Written by Amy Lippman
Directed by Adam Bernstein
Airs Sundays at 10pm (Et) on Showtime
Even to someone who’s bad at taking notice of a lot of production design in film and TV, Bill Masters looks wrong with a regular tie instead of a bow tie. Of course, when he’s put in front of a camera, everything about him feels off. The man’s already extremely uncomfortable in his own skin, and the task of explaining his work to an audience of millions is daunting, to say the least. And that’s before the considerations of national television come into play — censorship (and lots of it), having to “dumb down” his talk without sounding prurient, and most troubling, having to use “creative reenactment” to fill out the story. Bill is obsessed with even the...

[This is a review of Masters of Sex season 2, episode 11. There will be Spoilers.]

In the penultimate episode of Masters of Sex season 2, it’s still unclear where the story is taking us, but is that a bad thing? ‘One for the Money, Two for the Show’ places our characters is some fascinating predicaments, which should make for an entertaining finale.
Before delving into Bill and Virginia, let’s start with the surprise performance of the season by one Caitlin FitzGerald. Libby has been one of the more problematic characters throughout this second season, starting off as an ignorant mean-spirited housewife, to currently helping with the early stages of the American Civil Rights movement.

For so many reasons, it's difficult to believe that "One for the Money and Two for the Show" is Masters of Sex's penultimate episode this season. It was a season that started out with such excellent potential regarding a shifting paradigm in Ginny and Bill's relationship, even introducing a race-related storyline that was primed for something so different on television (one that could have even made Masters fully step out of Mad Men's shadow by meaningfully incorporating minority characters and perspectives). Instead, the show dropped that Buell Green narrative quickly and unceremoniously, jumped forward in time, and ended back at a place emotionally before "Fight" or even the season opener. Hit the jump for why maybe the show needs someone to tell them they look weird in this tie. The worst first: what has become of Ginny and Bill's relationship? As mentioned before the jump, Masters of Sex came out...

A review of tonight's "Masters of Sex" coming up just as soon as she's a man and I'm a woman... "I can't twinkle! I can't fuck!" -Bill As we get close to next week's season finale, "One for the Money, Two for the Show" does a better job than many recent episodes of suggesting that all the disparate aspects of the series are part of the same show. For one week, at least, Libby's time at Core and even Langham's weird relationship with Flo felt thematically connected to the study, to Bill and Virginia's relationship, and to the other things the show is ostensibly about, as characters in all corners of the show had to deal with the problem of feeling invisible to the ones they care about. The CBS news editor has no little to no use for Lester and his cinema verite aspirations. Flo tries to engage Langham...

Masters of Sex Season 2, Episode 10: “Below the Belt”
Written by Bathsheba Doran and Eileen Myers
Directed by Adam Arkin
Airs Sundays at 10pm (Et) on Showtime
“Everyone has their own version of everything that’s ever happened.” There’s more weight and truth to these words Ann Dowd speaks than in any of the many speeches she got to deliver in The Leftovers. It’s an easy sentence to seize upon as a master key to interpreting the ideas in “Below the Belt,” but “easy” doesn’t mean “unintelligent.” It’s there from the opening scene, in which Gini confesses to her psychiatrist that she’s set all their sessions up as a charade to try to help Barb. It’s in the fundamental misunderstanding between Langham and Flo about the nature of their new sexual relationship. And of course, it’s at the heart of the episode’s biggest conflict,...
