Gangster films have become an identifiable piece of American and international pop culture. The study of the human condition through criminality continues to fascinate audiences worldwide as the need to understand why people turn to lives of crime somehow helps people better understand themselves. With tons of big-name hits in the genre, such as The Godfather, Goodfellas and Scarface, it's easy to see why fans love the genre.
However, there are plenty of incredible films in the genre that, for one reason or another, aren't quite talked about as much as the iconic staples of gangster cinema. Films like Lawless and The Drop are underrated gems that deserve their day in the sun. Needless to say, more prominent names in the genre constantly overshadow multiple brilliant gangster flicks.
Updated on March 17, 2025, by Robert Vaux: The gangster genre is durable, and there is no shortage of brilliant gangster movies that never quite received their due.

At a time when California is looking up its tax credits to $750M annually, there’s some serious competition from across the pond, and that’s Ireland.
The Taoiseach of Ireland/Prime Minister of Ireland Michael Martin was here in Austin, TX on Monday along with Cinetic CEO John Sloss, The Astronaut filmmaker Jess Varley, and Irish producer Tristan Orpen Lynch to share the great experience of not only shooting in the country of leas and cliffs, but also the extremely competitive tax credit.
Sloss recently produced the Richard Linklater Berlin premiere, Blue Moon, over in Ireland, in addition to Varley with her SXSW world premiere The Astroanaut, and Lynch with his drama series Mix Tape.
Currently the Irish tax incentive for the screen industries, Section 481, provides a tax credit of up to 32% on eligible Irish expenditures based on 80% of a pic’s budget. That will soon rise to 40% for productions under 20 million Euros.

Brandon Sklenar has responded to speculation surrounding his choice of accessory at the 2025 Vanity Fair Oscars party. The It Ends With Us actor was seen wearing a pink floral brooch similar to the one worn by director Justin Baldoni at the film’s New York premiere, leading some to interpret it as a statement of support. Sklenar clarified that the matching pins were purely coincidental.
“Honestly, no. I wish I could say there was,” Sklenar told People at the SXSW premiere of his new film, The Drop, when asked if there was any hidden meaning behind the pin. “That was a total happenstance. I woke up in the morning and saw an article and I was like, ‘Oh, damn.’ I literally had no idea. Brandon Sklenar has opened up about wearing the same pin as his It Ends With Us director Justin Baldoni.
The actor, who played Blake Lively’s character’s love interest in It Ends With Us, had internet sleuths investigating after he showed up to the 2025 Vanity Fair Oscars party sporting a pink, floral brooch that appeared to match the one Baldoni wore to the It Ends With Us premiere in New York.
Amid the ongoing legal dispute between Lively and Baldoni over what happened on the set and during promotion of the film, observers speculated about what message was behind Sklenar’s choice to match Baldoni’s premiere accessory.
But now Sklenar says there was no hidden meaning behind his sartorial selection.
“Honestly, no. I wish I could say there was,” Sklenar told People, when asked if there was any hidden meaning behind the pin, at the 2025 SXSW premiere of his new movie The Drop.

Usually, it’s the films that are loud at the SXSW Film & TV Festival in Austin. This year, however, the parade of personalities in the City of the Violet Crown will be creating plenty of thunder including Blake Lively, Jenna Ortega, Michelle Obama, Disney co-chairman Alan Bergman, Amazon and MGM Studios head Jennifer Salke, Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Conan O’Brien fresh off the Oscar Dolby Theatre stage.
There are an intriguing amount of sit-downs here at SXSW this year after the fest kicks off Friday, rivaling the number of sidebar chats at a San Diego Comic-Con and certainly towering over the few at this past year’s Sundance, where the best chats were off-menu and not contained in any program: Elvis Mitchell’s conversations with Bill Murray and Quentin Tarantino.

Exclusive: Aaron Holliday (Cocaine Bear), Jermaine Fowler (Sorry to Bother You), Michael Abbott Jr. (Fallout) and Sean Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) have wrapped on Appofeniacs, an indie horror film from writer-director Chris Marrs Piliero.
Appofeniacs is a riff on the term “apophenia” which is the tendency to find connections or patterns in things that are unrelated or random — common examples being confirmation bias and paranoia. This marks the feature debut for Piliero, who is known for his music video work with Ariana Grande, Britney Spears, Avril Lavigne, Kesha, and The Black Keys (for which he won an MTV VMA).
Piliero independently financed and produced the film, which also stars Will Brandt, Paige Searcy, Simran Jehani, Harley Bronwyn, and Sean Wing. Gunn exec produced the pic, with Salvatore Schiavone and Jonathan Voluck handling casting.
Previously seen in Universal’s horror comedy Cocaine Bear, Holliday has also been seen on HBO’s Euphoria and Sharp Objects.

James Gandolfini will always be best remembered for playing the iconic anti-hero Tony Soprano on The Sopranos, as the groundbreaking HBO crime drama is still hailed as one of the greatest dramatic television shows ever made. Tony was a character who shaped the way that modern television anti-heroes were depicted, but it was hardly the first time that Gandolfini took on a role in a gritty crime project; his other memorable roles included Get Shorty, The Drop, Killing Them Softly, and The Man Who Wasnt There, among others. However, Gandolfinis performance in the Tony Scott film True Romance is the scariest of his career, and somehow managed to get even more intense than The Sopranos.

Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War was not only a long-anticipated anime adaptation of Bleach's final story arc, but has also proven to be worth the wait, as the anime has improved upon the manga's story in several ways. The original manga's creation was beset with problems, from pacing issues and deadlines to Tite Kubo's failing health, so the anime has offered a chance to rewrite the story as Kubo always dreamed of.
Thousand-Year Blood War depicts the conflict between Bleach's Soul Reapers and the Quincy, a group which they believed had been all but exterminated a thousand years prior. With the return of their seemingly unstoppable leader, Yhwach, the Quincy begin an assault on the Soul Society that causes mass destruction, and all the while, Yhwach is growing closer to his true goal: the destruction of reality and the creation of a new universe. First dates are nerve-wracking enough. Going on a first date while an unnamed, unseen troll pings you personal memes that escalate from annoying to homicidal? Blood-chilling.
Director Christopher Landon returns to the thriller genre with the playful, keep-you-guessing intensity he perfected in the Happy Death Day films with this of-the-moment whodunnit where everyone in the vicinity is a suspect… or victim. Drop is jointly produced by blockbuster genre houses Blumhouse and Platinum Dunes.

Throughout his career, Tom Hardy has been known as an actor with great versatility, jumping from role to role and genre to genre with ease and effectiveness. He's known for big roles like Bane in The Dark Knight Rises, Eddie Brock in Venom or Max Rockatansky in Mad Max: Fury Road. Most will remember these hits or even his early roles in films like Bronson and Inception, but it's all the ones in between his commercial titles that are actually his greatest films.
Proving to be one of the most unique performers of the last decade, Tom Hardy is an actor whose talents have been both highly regarded and yet at times overlooked by the scale and popularity of some of his films. The Academy is not going to give Tom Hardy an Oscar for playing roles like Bane or Venom, even if his performances make those films better. However,...

Between 1999 and 2007, HBO broke the mold of TV series when it ran The Sopranos. The show would go on to garner a staggering 111 Emmy nominations in that time, redefining television in the process as it broke barriers and pushed boundaries in ways that opened the door for R-Rated shows to become as commonplace as they are today. Though many cast members from it were excellent, none of the roles stood out as much as the lead character, Tony Soprano, whose portrayal became a career-defining role for James Gandolfini.
His riveting and superbly nuanced approach to the role was almost Brando-esque as it made Gandolfini the Godfather of TV mobsters. With his life indelibly marked by the character, Gandolfini went on to have a terrific career that included many supporting roles in a host of hit films like Zero Dark Thirty and The Incredible Burt Wonderstone. However, no matter how...

Bosch is a police procedural and drama series produced by Amazon Studios that follows the titular detective Harry Bosch. The series is based on the many detective novels by author Michael Connelly. The Harry Bosch book series consists of almost thirty books, which began with Connelly's first book, The Black Echo. But Bosch doesn't follow the same order as Michael Connelly's novels and even adapts multiple books for a single season.
Bosch follows a different criminal case each season and sees Detectives Harry Bosch and Jerry Edgar investigate. However, there are many overarching plots throughout the series' seven-season run. Each season takes bits and pieces of each Michael Connelly book to create a single unique storyline for television, with Connelly himself as a writer and executive producer on the show. And while the main case for each season is based on a single Michael Connelly book, other details and background...

James Gandolfini's last posthumous release in The Drop showcases another sinister side to his acting skills. Tom Hardy's mesmerizing performance as Bob Saginowski adds depth to the film's storyline, building tension until the climax. Despite the usual crime film tropes, The Drop's stunning cinematography and strong supporting cast make it a must-watch.
Michal R. Roskams The Drop was released in June 2014. As you probably have read from the title, this American crime film features a unique pairing. Not only that, but it came out seven years after The Sopranos series finale, it was James Gandolfinis last posthumous release (the first was a romance comedy called Enough Said) and four years out from Tom Hardys popular role as Sonys number one anti-hero, Venom.
One could argue that whatever the result turned out to be, such an independent feature is worthy of a watch based solely on these pieces of trivia.

23 years into his film career, Tom Hardy is still impossible to pin down. Is he a leading man? A full-on movie star? A character actor? Would he be perfectly happy to just make Venom movies until he retires?
Here's what we do know about Hardy: he's handsome, he loves trying on weird accents (which we ranked here at /Film), and he commits fully to every role whether it's a prestige picture or a superhero flick. Critics dig him (even if they do not dig the "Venom" movies at all), and he's tremendously respected by his fellow actors. He's one of the best we've got. But it's been 16 years since his breakthrough bravura performance in Nicolas Winding Refn's "Bronson," and, for whatever reason, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' membership has only managed to nominate him for one measly Oscar.
What gives?

The Sopranos was a series that changed the television landscape forever, as it kicked off the prestige TV era by proving that high quality television shows could contain the same dramatic intensity as Hollywood films. While the brilliance of showrunner David Chase cannot be overstated, its unlikely that The Sopranos would have the same cultural legacy that it does today if it wasnt for the all-time great performance by James Gandolfini. Tony Soprano is the role hes most recognized for, but Gandolfinis work in the gangster genre spans far beyond his HBO work. Gandolfini also co-starred alongside Tom Hardy and Noomi Rapace in the underrated 2014 crime drama The Drop.

Patience is a virtue, especially if you're a sci-fi fan.
When it comes to genre TV, science fiction and sci-fi adjacent programs are often saved when unceremoniously dumped by a network.
Jericho, Lucifer, The Expanse, and Stargate Sg-1 all found new life after cancellation. Today, Snowpiercer joins that list.
AMC Networks announced today that it has acquired the exclusive U.S. linear and streaming rights to all four seasons of the post-apocalyptic drama series Snowpiercer.
The first three seasons of the critically acclaimed drama will stream on AMC+ later this year, leading up to the series’ season four premiere on AMC and AMC+ in early 2025.
This should come as excellent news for TV Fanatics, as the show always drove discussion and fueled passionate viewers with much to say.
Set more than seven years after the world has become a frozen wasteland, Snowpiercer centers on the remnants of humanity who inhabit a perpetually moving train,...

New to Prime Video on March 7, 2024, Ricky Stanicky is a throwback R-rated buddy comedy by director Peter Farrelly. The story involves a trio of friends who pull a childhood prank that backfires, prompting them to blame an imaginary culprit named Ricky Stanicky. Years later, the friends continue to use the made-up alias to avoid workplace trouble and cover up their sophomoric shenanigans.
Although Ricky Stanicky has drawn mediocre reviews for its crude raunchiness and overlong running time, the old-school buddy comedy boasts a tremendous cast of recognizable actors that elevates the material. For those wondering if the movie is worth a watch, perhaps the superb cast of characters will sway a decision one way or the other. As such, it's time to meet the characters featured in Ricky Stanicky.

Talented actors bring depth to Apple TV+'s Constellation, blending sci-fi drama with captivating visuals and character beats. Noomi Rapace shines as Jo, navigating a skewed reality after a mysterious space mission in this sci-fi psychological thriller. Jonathan Banks and James D'Arcy add intrigue to the storyline, creating a compelling dynamic with Jo's character development.
Apple TV+'s Constellation is led by a talented roster of actors who make its sci-fi drama all the more compelling and convincing. Created by Peter Harness, Constellation follows an astronaut named Jo, who works on the International Space Station with a group of other astronautical experts. Following a mysterious accident, Jo makes a heroic return to Earth. To her surprise, however, everything on Earth seems changed.
While Constellation's primary appeal comes from its exploration of complex sci-fi concepts and mysteries, it also captivates audiences with scintillating visuals of space and the inner workings of a space station.

Noomi Rapace returns to the sci-fi genre with Apple TV+ series Constellation, marking her first move back to space since 2012's Prometheus. Constellation's storyline blurs reality and fantasy as astronaut Jo tries to adjust to the real world after an accident during a space mission. Rapace's performance in Constellation has garnered praise, drawing comparisons to her role in divisive Alien prequel Prometheus.
Now Noomi Rapace is returning to the sci-fi genre with Apple TV+ series Constellation, it's a good time to recall her last trip to space with a certain 2012 blockbuster. After her breakout turn as Lisbeth Salander in 2009's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Rapace was soon being offered major roles in Hollywood movies. Some of Noomi Rapace's most notable movies of this period include Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, The Drop and Netflix's first blockbuster, Bright. In recent years, the star has jumped back...
