Season 3 of "Yellowjackets" spent the first four episodes laying the groundwork for some massive moments of payoff, but episode 5 kicked things into high gear and the season has thrown some meaty stories to the cannibalistic fandom hungering for more. Since the very beginning, fans have known that the surviving Wiskayok High School Yellowjackets soccer team players have been terrified of the general public knowing about "what happened in the woods," but it was assumed that they were afraid the public would find out about their survival cannibalism, or perhaps even their ritualistic ways of determining who would be sacrificed for meat. In season 1, when Taissa Turner (Tawny Cypress) is campaigning for state senator of New Jersey, her opponent Phil Bathurst releases an attack ad depicting her as "cannibalizing your tax dollars," complete with a photo of her eating barbecue to reference...

Harlan Coben's series on Netflix are addictive, puzzling, quirky, mysterious, thrilling, and full of twists and turns. Expect more of the same coming your way soon. A new series from Netflix’s favorite thriller writer is set to launch later this month.

Caught was Coben’s tenth novel when released in 2010. It’s one of 14 of his books being dramatized for Netflix under a long-term deal between the platform and Coben. This one is a roller coaster of a thriller which will have you gripped. It looks set to be a strong binge-watch show.

As a quick scene setting, the show was filmed in Argentina and is Coben’s first Latin America set adaptation. That just adds a neat extra flavour to the show helping make it stand out from the crowd. The author again took on an Executive Producer role so we can be very confident of this being another high-quality drama.

Netflix produced its first non-documentary feature in 2015. It was called Beasts of No Nation, and it was fine. However, the film did not get nominated for an Academy Award. Lots has changed in the last decade.

Your favorite streamer often gets nominated for major awards each year. 2025 is no different. Emilia Pérez has 13 nominations alone, including one for Best Picture. So far, Netflix has yet to get a win in that category, and Emilia Pérez is not the favorite this year, either.

In fact, Netflix has also almost been entirely shut out of wins in the acting categories. Only Laura Dern won, and that was for Best Supporting Actress in 2020. In 1846, the Donner-Reed Party set out from Independence, Missouri to make the journey west to a better life in California. What befell them was a horrific fate that some blamed on incompetence and others suggested embodied the dangers of manifest destiny.

In a new mini-primer for Murder Made Fiction podcast, Joe tells Jenn about the calamities that befell the group and left them stranded for the winter under 22 ft of snow with no food, which ultimately forced them to resort to cannibalism. The story includes their perilous journey across the Great Salt Lake desert, the dire conditions of the camp at Truckee Lake and Alder Creek, and the four (!) rescue attempts to reach survivors before they perished during the winter of 1946-47.

It’s a horrifying story about desperation, starvation, hubris, and the enduring will to live. It also involves the murder of indigenous people and the deaths of many children.

True Crime often gets a bad wrap. Whether maligned for exploiting tragedy or glamorizing a monstrous serial killer, the genre has just as many detractors as those who consume it with voracious glee. And this criticism is often justified. For every sensitive and painstakingly accurate recreation, there’s a slapped-together mess creating salacious content out of unthinkable tragedy. It takes care and sensitivity to create impactful entertainment out of the worst day of a real person’s life.

While the story of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 does not technically involve crime, it is an example of the genre done right. Director J.A. Bayona spent more than 100 hours gaining the trust of those directly affected by this harrowing crash in order to recreate the story with overwhelming humanity.

Netflix’s upcoming teen-sports drama, Olympo, from the developers of Elite, is headed to the streaming service in June 2025. The series stars Through the Window’s Clara Galle, and 13 Exorcism’s María Romanillos. Here’s what we know so far about Olympo on Netflix.

Olympo is an upcoming Spanish Netflix Original teen sports-drama series created by Jan Matheu, Laia Foguet, and Ibai Abad. Directing duties were split between Marçal Forès, Daniel Barone, Ibai Abad, and Ana Vásquez. The series is produced by Barcelona based Zeta Studios, who are also responsible for the production of Netflix’s beloved Spanish teen-drama series Elite.

When is Olympo coming to Netflix?

Although Olympo was revealed as part of Netflix’s international lineup for 2025, an official release date has not yet been announced. However, we have learned that a preliminary release date of June 20, 2025, has been set.

Welcoming foreign shoots while the rest of Latin America was in Covid lockdown, Uruguay has benefited from a growing influx of international productions, with local talent and crew gaining invaluable on-set experience.

Late last year, the trades confirmed that DC Studios is moving forward with a solo Clayface movie, with The Haunting of Hill House and Doctor Sleep director Mike Flanagan on board to pen the script.

The search is currently on for a director, since Flanagan is unavailable due to his commitments to a Carrie TV series and the new Exorcist movie. The project has been given an official release date of September 11, 2026.

Based on comments from James Gunn, the movie will be set in the Dcu, as opposed to The Batman director Matt Reeves' "BatVerse."

The survivors of the crash are forced to survive in the brutal climate for 19 months, with many perishing, and the rest resorting to cannibalism. The show is loosely inspired by the true story of the 1972 Andes Flight Disaster, in which a plane carrying 45 passengers, including the Uruguayan Rugby team, their families and friends, and the flight crew, crash-landed in the Andes Mountains. The survivors were lost for 72 days, during which many of the remaining survivors of the crash suffered hypothermia and starvation. They were also tragically driven to cannibalism to stay alive until the remaining 14 survivors were finally rescued. That story has also been made into a 2023 survival drama,...

Federation and OjoFilms have joined forces to create a new Spanish-language limited series titled “El Abuso,” based on the book “La Fuga de Punta Carretas” by Eleuterio Fernández Huidobro.

Directed by Academy Award nominees Cesar Charlone and Fernando Meirelles, the Dp and co-director of 2003’s “City of God,” respectively, “El Abuso” tells the true story of the dramatic 1971 jailbreak of 101 political prisoners from the Tupamaros, a legendary urban guerilla group. Among the escapees was Pepe Mújica, who later became President of Uruguay.

“At a time when the world was deeply divided, this jailbreak symbolized freedom for an entire region,” said Charlone.

The series will also examine the kidnapping and assassination of CIA operative Dan Mitrione, which the Tupamaros used to expose the brutal tactics of the impending Operation Condor during a shadowy period of the Cold War.

Serial Killers of Women

It’s been two months of covering films and miniseries adaptations of the crimes of Ted Bundy and Gary Ridgway. Jenn and I have unpacked the crimes of both serial killers, as well as their victims, the survivors, and the legacy they’ve left behind in both true crime and media.

The diverse titles have made us question the best approach for adapting the stories of extremely prolific killers in a way that doesn’t diminish their victims to mere body counts or statistics. It has also made us question if there is a “better” way to tell these stories, as many of them tend to lean into dark comedy (such as 2002’s Ted Bundy) or sensationalism (see: Ted Bundy: American Boogeyman).

In the last few years, Netflix has further expanded its slate with foreign titles that have proven to be extremely popular. Aside from the worldwide phenomenon series Squid Game and Money Heist, the streamer has released many popular movies, too, like 2023's Society of the Snow, 2019's The Platform, and 2024's Under Paris.

A new title that's making waves on the streaming service is Ad Vitam. The French action thriller debuted on Netflix on Jan. 10, 2025, and has been a huge hit ever since. Ad Vitam continued its dominance at the top of the non-English movie charts globally for a third week in a row, adding 8.4 million views, the equivalent of 13.7 million hours viewed for the week between Jan. 20 and Jan. 26, per Tudum.

There's nothing people love more than a comeback story and Cameron Diaz proves that.

Whenever disaster hits in a movie, we already know what will happen next. We will either have a juicy disaster flick in our hands, packed to the brim with breathtaking action sequences, or we'll get a heavy drama like J.A. Bayona's The Impossible or, well, J.A. Bayona's Society of the Snow. But what if the director staring at imminent catastrophe isn't that keen on action movies and tearjerkers? What if they're more into delivering a message through a very disturbing and uncomfortable sense of humor? Well, that's how you get Ruben Östlund's Force Majeure, a film that makes you wonder if getting hit by an avalanche would really be the worst thing in the world. After all, surviving such a disaster unharmed might turn you into a coward or, perhaps even more disturbing, a coward's wife.

Sony Pictures Classics has announced that it will release its dramedy The Penguin Lessons, starring Academy Award nominees Steve Coogan (Philomena) and Jonathan Pryce (The Two Popes), in theaters nationwide on March 28.

The film is set to open against Focus Features’ Sundance entry The Ballad of Wallis Island, starring Carey Mulligan; Universal’s horror thriller The Woman in the Yard, A24’s Death of a Unicorn, starring Jenna Ortega and Paul Rudd; and Amazon MGM’s Jason Statham action thriller A Working Man, among other titles.

Based on Tom Michell’s 2016 memoir of the same name, The Penguin Lessons is inspired by the true story of a disillusioned Englishman who went to work in a school in Argentina in 1976. Expecting an easy ride, Tom (Coogan) discovers a divided nation and a class of unteachable students. However, after he rescues a penguin from an oil-slicked beach, his life is turned upside-down.

Society of Camera Operators announced today the film and television nominees for its 2025 Soc Awards, which honor the craft of camera operation and celebrate the vital role camera operators and crews play in storytelling.

Vying for the movie prize are the camera pros behind Challengers, Civil War, A Complete Unknown, Wicked and Wolfs. Nominees on the TV side are the operators for episodes of The Bear, Fallout, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, The Penguin and Yellowstone.

Winners will be honored during the annual Soc Lifetime Achievement Awards weekend on February 14 & 15 at Loews Hollywood.

Chris Hemsworth and Tom Holland’s 2015 survival drama In the Heart of the Sea is now trending on Netflix, and its heartbreaking true story provides a good reminder to watch Netflix’s own similar film from January 2024. While framed around one of the survivors recounting the tale to Herman Melville, serving as inspiration for his novel Moby Dick, In the Heart of the Sea explores the true story behind the 1820 sinking of the whaling ship Essex. After the ship is wrecked by a sperm whale, twenty crew members resort to drastic measures before being rescued, with the majority dying at sea.

After landing on Netflix on January 1, 2025, In the Heart of the Sea has finally received a resurgence in popularity a decade after its premiere. Unfortunately, despite In the Heart of the Sea’s stellar cast and director, it was met with mixed reviews in 2015, currently holding a 42% Rotten Tomatoes score.

The Cinema Audio Society announced nominations on Tuesday, Jan. 7, honoring the best in cinematic sound mixing. Nominees for live-action motion picture sound mixing are A Complete Unknown, Deadpool & Wolverine, Dune: Part Two, Gladiator II, and Wicked. Netflix’s La Palma is trending on a new TV ratings chart, despite having a less-than-stellar 28% audience score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. The Norwegian disaster drama reached fifth place the week of Dec. 19 through Dec. 25, 2024, on Reelgood, which tracks audience interest, per Screen Rant.

Reelgood’s top five list also includes: Paramount+’s Dexter: Original Sin, Apple TV+’s Shrinking, and The Agency from Showtime. The top spot for the week of Dec. 19 to 25 went to Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone.

Netflix's latest disaster show is trending on a new streaming chart despite a weak reception from audiences. Stories of disaster, both real and fictional, have tended to find an audience on Netflix. Society of the Snow, from director J.J. Bayona, was the third most-watched Netflix film for the first half of 2024. The drama unfolds in 1972, focusing on the true story of a Uruguayan rugby team's experience in 1972 and their ordeal after a flight crashed in the Andes Mountains.

Under Paris was also not too far behind as the fourth most-watched film during that same period. Directed by Xavier Gens, who wrote the script with Yannick Dahan, Maud Heywang, Yaël Langmann and Olivier Torres, the French film centered on a grieving marine biologist who has to save Paris from a giant shark. As the new year begins, though, a miniseries, with only four episodes, is showing signs of success.

An unexpected (and now largely panned) TV series has exploded into the #1 spot on Netflix’s top 10. The limited series, which was released earlier this month with little fanfare, is titled La Palma and follows a Norwegian family who, while vacationing on the titular island, suddenly find themselves fighting for survival amid a natural disaster. La Palma has taken the streaming platform by storm, beating out the likes of Lisa Kudrow and Ray Romano’s dark comedy series No Good Deed, Jamie Foxx’s stand-up special Jamie Foxx: What Had Happened Was..., and the critical hit spy thriller series Black Doves.

Created by Martin Sundland, Lars Gudmestad, and Harald Rosenløw-Eeg, La Palma stars Ingrid Bolsø Berdal (Cold Prey), Anders Baasmo (Welcome to Norway), Alma Günther (Another Happy Christmas), Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, and Thea Sofie Loch Næss (The Last Kingdom), and is only four episodes long, making it perfect for binge-watching.

Tentpoles Dune: Part Two, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and Deadpool & Wolverine and TV series including Fallout and Agatha All Along lead nominations for the 52nd Saturn Awards, which recognize the year’s best genre movies and series.

Warner Bros’ Dune: Part Two topped the overall noms list with 14 including Best Science Fiction Film and acting noms for Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya among others, followed by studio stablemate Beetlejuice 2 with 13 noms including Best Fantasy Film; Warner Bros topped all studios with 35 noms.

Disney’s Deadpool & Wolverine had 10 nominations.

The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films will host the 52nd Annual Saturn Awards on Groundhog Day next year, the organization announced on Wednesday.

The awards ceremony will honor the best TV shows and movies in the genre of science fiction, horror and fantasy with its annual banquet on February 2, which will stream live via Electric Entertainment’s platform Electric Now and on The Roku Channel for the first time.

Nominees for the Saturn Awards were announced this week, with Warner Bros Discovery (Wbd) grabbing the top spot for the most-nominated entertainment company with 35 nominations. Wbd-owned or produced films like “Dune: Part Two,” “Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice” and “Wonka” were among the titles mentioned. Dune: Part Two was the most-nominated singular title with 14 potential award wins.

Netflix’s European heads have unveiled a series of sneak peeks and new commissions, including a Season 3 order of “The Law According to Lidia Poët” in Italy and a three-part reunion special of France’s “Nouvelle Ecole.”

The third season of “The Law According to Lidia Poët,” which was unveiled by Tinny Andreatta, VP of content for Italy, will again star Matilda De Angelis.

Meanwhile Pauline Dauvin, VP of content for France, revealed a three-part special reuniting the talent of competition series “Nouvelle Ecole” (“Rhythm and Flow: France”) enabling viewers to catch up with their favorite contestants.

A panel of top Netflix executives touted 10 years of the global streamer in such key European territories as France, Germany and Italy on Tuesday.

At Content London, vp of content Emea Larry Tanz, vp of content France Pauline Dauvin and vp of content Italy Tinny Andreatta spoke during a fireside discussion celebrating big milestones for Netflix, with the 10-year anniversary this year in France and Germany and more dates to mark in 2025 in Italy and Spain.

During the session, Tanz shared that between 2020 and 2023, Netflix invested €6.5 billion ($6.8 billion) in European, non-English series and films, including some of the service’s most popular series and films, such as Society of the Snow (Spain), Troll (Norway), Borgen (Denmark), Under Paris (France), High Water (Poland), and The Hand Of God (Italy).

“That’s great for our members from films and series they get, but also for the industry,” Tanz said. “That has resulted in 60,000 jobs just in Europe.

The Society of the Snow true story is just as harrowing as the tale told in the Netflix movie. Directed by J.A. Bayona (The Impossible), Society of the Snow tells the story of a plane carrying the Uruguay rugby team to Chili for a match in 1972, only to slam into a mountain in the Andes and crash, the plane breaking into prices. In a miracle, some of the passengers survived, but they were stranded with no one knowing where they were, and they ended up relying on desperate means for survival.

Showtime has been sued over Yellowjackets, with the idea theft lawsuit claiming the TV show has a similar plot to a 2015 survival movie. The horror mystery series has become one of the biggest hits for the premium network, enthralling critics and audiences with the survival of a soccer team after a plane crash in Canada, as well as how their adult lives after escaping have been impacted. However, The Hollywood Reporter has revealed a lawsuit has been filed against Showtime and Lionsgate by Eden Film Production, who claim Yellowjackets committed idea theft against the 2015 film Eden. Both media involve a soccer team crash-landing in the wilderness, resorting to cannibalism for survival. They both also involve a coach, the child of a head coach, and someone of the opposite gender getting stuck in the wilderness with the team.

Escape at Dannemora feels like a cross between The Shawshank Redemption and Out of Sight. Fandom is one of the driving forces behind digital content creation. Tumblr GIFsets promoting TV shows, four-hour YouTube essays about the Star Wars hotel, hundreds of millions of words of fanfiction, and countless views and comments on content creators’ videos (not to mention the channel subscriptions and merch purchases) are all born out of fan fervor. Platforms like YouTube have increasingly recognized how powerful fandoms can be–and now Netflix seems to be catching on, too.

For years, Netflix, like virtually all other major streaming services, hasn’t allowed people to take screenshots or screen recordings of what they’re watching. If you try to record any kind of footage from what you’re watching, you’ll get a blank black square. This prevents some piracy methods, sure, but it also hinders fans who just want to share a favorite shot or talk about a favorite clip on social media.

At this year’s Mipcom, where Spain is the Country of Honor, Spanish director J.A. Bayona hosted a masterclass in which he talked about inspiration, anchoring his stories in a moment and the importance of improvisation.

Early on, Bayona was asked to talk through his creative process, from picking a project to writing to filming and everything in between. According to the director, the first step is finding something that resonates with him and anchoring everything else he does to that point.

“I need to feel a connection to a feeling idea that resonates with me. That’s something that, if it’s strong enough, will last the process of making a film, which is a very long and sometimes painful process. You really need to have a very strong connection to the material in order to sustain that,” he explained.

If that sounds familiar, it might be because Spain’s been having a moment for the last few years. The bump came when the government launched the Spain Audiovisual Hub in 2021, offering strategic backing of the industry by pumping 1.6 billion euros ($1.73 billion) into it.

In the three years since, Spain has made progress on all four of the Hub’s main areas of focus: attracting foreign investments and shoots, improving financial and tax instruments, training talent — especially women — as well as regulatory reforms and the elimination of administrative barriers.

Now, Spain has been designated MIPCOM’s 2024 Country of Honor, and the Spanish government has launched an ambitious campaign called Spain, Where Talent Ignites aimed at boosting the country’s global recognition, reputation and marketability of Spanish productions, and growing business opportunities in an increasingly competitive landscape.

J.A. Bayona’s Society of the Snow is one of Netflix’s most-watched movies of this year so far yet the director revealed today it was mainly intended for an older audience.

Speaking at MIPCOM, the Oscar-nominee said his creative team were “surprised” when the movie about the Uruguayan rugby team’s survival experience after their plane crashed in the Andes proved to be a “phenomenon” with younger audiences.

“Society of the Snow was meant to be for a more mature audience,” said Bayona. “When I look back it makes sense because it had young actors going through a difficult situation and the younger audience felt related to these characters. But it was never intended to be a film for young people and it became one.”

Bayona’s Oscar-nominated “Society of the Snow,” Netflix series hit “Money Heist” and Prime Video’s “Red Queen” have spearheaded the success of Spanish content worldwide, per a new report unveiled at Mipcom by Spanish trade and investment body Icex and entertainment analytics org, Parrot Analytics.

Data they presented at the annual confab in Cannes revealed that Spain-originated content has generated an estimated $5.1 billion in global streaming revenue over the past four years.

For 2024, Spanish content is expected to deliver $1.4 billion in global revenue, reflecting a steep demand across key regions and confirming the country’s dominance in the non-English content market. Spain is Mipcom’s country of honor in this year’s edition.

“Society of the Snow,” in particular, was the #4 movie driving the most subscriber sign-ups for Netflix and ranked second among movies that contributed to the giant streamer’s subscriber renewals in Q1 2024, according to the report.

Spanish TV fiction continues to reinforce its position at the forefront of global TV, maintaining its edge, its impact on streaming services and overseas reach. Recognizing its merits, Mipcom celebrates Spain as its 2024 Country of Honor. That honor is based on market performance.

Through Oct. 6 this year, seven Spanish titles hit No. 1 on Netflix’s global non-English TV series charts for a total of 15 of 40 weeks, just ahead of South Korea (13). Japan (three) and France (two) trailed well behind.
