Already selected as this year’s Spanish Best International Feature Film submission for the Oscars, Fernando León de Aranoa’s dark workplace comedy “The Good Boss,” starring Javier Bardem, has set a new record for most Spanish Academy Goya Award nominations with 20, ahead of Icíar Bollaín’s standout Basque drama “Maixabel” with 14 and Pedro Almodóvar’s “Parallel Mothers,” which secured eight.
The 20 nominations include: Best picture, director, original screenplay, original music, lead actor, three nominations for supporting actor, supporting actress, two nominations for best new male actor and one for best new female actor, production design, cinematography, editing, art direction, costume design, makeup, sound design and special effects. It’s a total which breaks an almost 30-year-old record held by Imanol Uribe’s “Numbered Days,” which received 19 nominations in 1994.
León’s latest, produced by The Mediapro Studio and Reposado PC, is a return to a fruitful partnership between the director and his leading man.

Though some people may be unaware, there’s an awards ceremony held every year to honor the true heroes behind our favorite films: the marketing team. That’s right, the Golden Trailer Awards hand out statues to those who work tirelessly putting together trailers, commercials and posters for hundreds of releases each and every year. And not just in film, but video games and TV, too. It’s an incredibly comprehensive ceremony as well, with awards for a whopping 116 categories. Yes, 116 – though not all of those are given out on stage.
The nominations for the 18th annual edition, set to go down on June 6th at the Saban Theater in Beverly Hills, are now in and it seems that Warner Bros. is leading the pack amongst the various studios, scoring an impressive 68 nods in total, 11 of which come from The Lego Batman Movie – the most of any title to be nominated.

Before we get into the major goings-on of this week’s Westworld, let’s all agree that there’s at least a tiny chance that everything we know to be true is really just an elaborate program crafted by a master manipulator who might wipe the whole thing tomorrow and start afresh. Cool?
Hey, it may sound ridiculous, but as recently as two episodes ago, Bernard thought he was your average child-grieving, co-worker-banging mammal. Now he’s a fully sentient puddle of blood and circuitry on the floor in a forgotten Westworld lab.

Few erotic thrillers really earn the adjective “steamy,” but that’s definitely not the case with Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum’s “Careful What You Wish For.” Starring Nick Jonas and Isabelle Lucas, the film centers around a young teen working in a wealthy vacation community during the summer before college. Upon meeting the gorgeous young wife of his powerful investment banker neighbor (Dermot Mulroney), he falls for her and starts an affair. But when the town erupts after a suspicious death, the young lovers become embroiled in a scandal, testing their limits as they battle passion, deceit and betrayal.

IndieWire’s Springboard column profiles up-and-comers in the film industry worthy of your attention.
A regular guest at Berlinale and other prestigious film festivals that screen his films, the German filmmaker Jan Soldat is a quickly rising star in the world of short films. His documentary films have a reputation for being edgy, as his main topic of interest is alternative sexual practices and fetishes such as S&M bondage, prisonplay, diaper fetish and zoophilia, among others, which he likes to film attentively and explicitly. But far from making his films for shock value, Soldat is using the film medium to discover sexualities, relationships, bodies and passion in all of their forms – and in this way, to have another look at what it means to be human.
If conventional romantic dramas or comedies often like to explore the eccentricities of romance, Soldat’s films seem to find romance in eccentricities.

Over the past two weeks, a pair of different sequels took the top spots at the box office, although both were far behind their predecessors. Over the Memorial Day holiday weekend, 20th Century Fox's X-Men: Apocalypse took in $65.7 million, far below the $90.8 million haul of 2014's X-Men: Days of Future Past. Last weekend, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows won at the box office with $35.3 million, nearly half of 2014's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which earned $65.5 million. This weekend brought two new sequels, The Conjuring 2 and Now You See Me 2, along with the video game adaptation Warcraft, but it was The Conjuring 2 that came out on top with $40.3 million.
According to Box Office Mojo, The Conjuring 2 pulled in an impressive $12,070 per-screen average from 3,343 theaters. The $40.3 million tally is just slightly below the The Conjuring's $41.8 million debut in the summer of 2013, where it went on to make $137.4 million domestically and $318 million worldwide, from just a $20 million budget. The Conjuring 2 has also earned an additional $50 million in international markets for a global total of $90.3 million, from a $40 million budget. This weekend's other new releases, Warcraft and Now You See Me 2 came in second and third places respectively, with Warcraft earning $24.3 million with a $7,164 per-screen average from 3,400 theaters and Now You See Me 2 taking in $23 million with a $7,124 per-screen average from 3,232 theaters.
Of these three new releases, only The Conjuring 2 is a hit with the critics, earning a solid 74% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while Now You See Me 2 has a middling 36% rating and Warcraft has a 27% score, although it did rise from its dismal 16% score earlier this week. Despite these negative reviews, Warcraft is already a big hit internationally, where it has earned $286.1 million in select global markets. The video game adaptation was reportedly produced with a massive $160 million budget.
Director James Wan brings The Conjuring 2 to the screen with another real case from the files of renowned demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren. Reprising their roles, Oscar nominee Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson star as Lorraine and Ed Warren, who, in one of their most terrifying paranormal investigations, travel to north London to help a single mother raising four children alone in a house plagued by malicious spirits. The supporting cast includes Davis Thewlis, Frances O'Connor, Franka Potente, Maria Doyle Kennedy, Sterling Jerins, Simon McBurney and Javier Botet.
Warcraft comes from Legendary Pictures and Universal Pictures, an epic adventure of world-colliding conflict based on Blizzard Entertainment's global phenomenon. The peaceful realm of Azeroth stands on the brink of war as its civilization faces a fearsome race of invaders: Orc warriors fleeing their dying home to colonize another. As a portal opens to connect the two worlds, one army faces destruction and the other faces extinction. From opposing sides, two heroes are set on a collision course that will decide the fate of their family, their people and their home. So begins a spectacular saga of power and sacrifice in which war has many faces, and everyone fights for something.
Now You See Me 2 is set one year after the Four Horsemen outwitted the FBI and won the public's adulation with their mind-bending spectacles. The gang resurfaces only to find themselves face to face with a new enemy who enlists them to pull off their most dangerous heist yet. Lizzy Caplan replaces Isla Fisher as one of the Four Horsemen, with Daniel Radcliffe joining the cast alongside returning stars Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Dave Franco, Mark Ruffalo, Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine. It's worth noting that the original Now You See Me opened with $29.3 million in 2013, en route to $117 million domestic and $351 million worldwide, from a $75 million budget. Rounding out the top 5 will be Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 with $14.8 million and X-Men: Apocalypse with $10 million.
The top 10 will be rounded out by Me Before You ($9.2 million), The Angry Birds Movie ($6.7 million), Alice Through the Looking Glass ($5.5 million), Captain America: Civil War ($4.3 million) and The Jungle Book ($2.7 million). Also opening in limited release this weekend is Reliance Films' crime thriller Te3n, which earned $284,040 from 104 theaters for a $2,731 per-screen average. A24's documentary De Palma earned $30,856 from three theaters for a $10,285 per-screen average, Cohen Media Group's drama Diary of a Chambermaid earned $11,067 from two theaters for a $5,534 per-screen average, Roadside Attractions' drama Genius took in $6,517 from 16 theaters for a $407 per-screen average and Focus World's comedy Puerto Ricans in Paris took in $25,000 from 41 theaters for a $610 per-screen average. No box office data was released for Electric Entertainment's thriller Blackway, Starz Media's thriller Careful What You Wish For or Music Box Films' horror-comedy Therapy for a Vampire. We don't know if any of these films plan to expand in wide release throughout the coming weeks.
Looking ahead to next weekend, two new movies hit theaters in wide release. Disney Pixar's long-awaited sequel Finding Dory will go up against Warner Bros.' action comedy Central Intelligence, starring Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart. Also opening in limited release is The Weinstein Company's horror-thriller Clown, Magnolia's action-adventure The Last King, Film Movement's documentary My Love, Don't Cross That River, First Run's documentary Argentina, Hannover House's romantic comedy A Remarkable Life and Magnolia's documentary Tickled. Be sure to check back on Tuesday for the new round of predictions. Until then, take a look at the top 10 for the weekend of June 10.

A teenage boy's fantasy come to life, Careful What You Wish For also carries with it a wallop of moral judgment. Virginal high school student Doug (Nick Jonas) returns with his parents to their longtime summer home overlooking Lake Lure (?!). While a plethora of young, slender women in bikinis cavort nearby, studious Doug carries a box of books to his room. From there he notices a couple checking out the rental house next door, especially a tall, willowy blonde who catches his peeping eye. Doug soon joins his gregarious best friend Carson (Graham Rogers) at the restaurant where they will work for the summer. As Carson optimistically tries to chat up every girl they pass, Doug broods, convinced no one will ever go for...

Nick Jonas: hot or not? If you’re squealing right now, you’re among the very focused-grouped dopes — I mean demographic — that “Careful What You Wish For” is aiming to reel in with its six-pack slo-mos and seemingly intentional bits of cheese. (Just to make sure that, if nothing else, this howler can one day be embraced as camp.) The real mystery is how Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum‘s Careful What You Wish For got itself a theatrical release in the first place — no matter how limited. I’m not surprised Starz Digital is handling distribution, though, since it feels exactly like a late night pay cable ticket sanitized to an R-rating for lustful eroticism rather than actual chemistry, nudity, or plausibility. Sometimes thrillers of the “youthful stalker hits the sexual jackpot” variety can at least be entertaining in an ironic way, but that’s unfortunately not the case here. In fact, Chris Frisina‘s script is smart enough with its inevitable murder and ensuing insurance case to make us believe the film was produced with dramatic eyes and artistic hope. Alas, it ultimately falls short.

Paramount's Teenage Mutnant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows had no trouble topping the box office last weekend with $35.2 million, Although, that total was less than half of what 2014's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles opened with in 2014, when it debuted to the tune of $65.5 million. Tmnt 2's reign will most likely end early, going up against three newcomers, Universal's Warcraft, Lionsgate's Now You See Me 2 and Warner Bros.' The Conjuring 2. If our projections are correct, then Warcraft should have no trouble coming out on top this weekend.
While exact theater counts have not been given yet, Box Office Mojo reports that Warcraft is expected to debut in an estimated 3,400 theaters, while The Conjuring 2 is expected to open in approximately 3,100 theaters and Now You See Me 2 is set to debut in 3,000 theaters. If you've ever watched an “adult” movie, you know of the contrived situations, the cheesy soundtrack, and the gasping bodies. You'd laugh if a lowly movie critic complained of that movie's plot inconsistencies, its horrible acting, or the needless dialogue. So I won't blame you if you laugh while I tell you the many ways in which Nick Jonas's new film, the self-styled erotic thriller Careful What You Wish For, is not much more than glorified softcore. Which is to say that you may very well really enjoy seeing it. I certainly did.
The movie is a straight-up remake of the 1980s cult classic Body Heat, starring William Hurt and Kathleen Turner. Jonas, in all his heartthrob, beefcake glory, plays starry-eyed youth Doug (“Douggie”) Martin, who falls hard for an older woman, his neighbor's attractive wife Lena, played by the impossibly hot model Isabel Lucas. When it comes to charity, President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle Obama, mean business. Just one week after visiting with Prince Harry at Kensington Palace, the pair sent a very special message to the royal regarding his upcoming Invictus Games in Orlando, Fl. "Hey, Prince Harry. Remember when you told us to bring it at the Invictus Games?" Michelle asks, looking super serious with her arms crossed. "Careful what you wish for," Barack responds as one serviceman drops a figurative mic on the ground. Well, it certainly didn't take long for him to respond. Not only does he adorably mimic the serviceman with a mic drop of his own, but he also has a little help from Queen Elizabeth II. The first lady is already set to cheer on team USA as she attends Harry's Paralympic-style games for wounded veterans on May 8. Watch the hilarious videos in their entirety,...

nullThe Invictus Games are rapidly approaching, so President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama are gearing up for what will surely be an intense experience in Orlando, Florida. Quite the competitors, Potus and Flotus sent host Prince Harry a little warning message via Twitter. "Hey, Prince Harry. Remember when you told us to bring it at the Invictus Games?" the First Lady asks in the video. "Careful what you wish for," the president adds. A uniformed gentleman standing behind them provides the symbolic mid drop. "Boom." Boom is right—but not for long. The redheaded royal responded with a video of his own on Twitter, but he added a little extra royalty to the mix. Queen...

We all have a few TV shows that we loved, and wind up missing when they end. Some of them were cancelled too soon and some of them stretched on way too long, but regardless we form an emotional attachment to the characters and the world. Sometimes the TV gods hear our prayers and grant us a revival years later, but this can lead to an extreme case of “Careful what you wish for.”
The last few years have seen a boatload of old shows being rebooted, with everything from Twin Peaks to Ful House being hosed down for a new generation; even ReBoot is getting a reboot. The X-Files recently came back after a long hiatus and – dodgy opening episode aside – fans seem to be pleased with the results. Careful what you wish for, Abby Lee Miller. You might just get it — and more. Or less. According to the Pittburgh Post Gazette, The Dance Moms hellion parlayed income from her growing notoriety on the Lifetime reality trainwreck into a healthy windfall she then tried to hide from bankruptcy court, following the reorganization plan she filed on behalf of her Pennsylvania-based Abby Lee Dance Co. in December 2010. And it wasn’t an oopsie. Miller, 50, allegedly created back accounts specifically to keep the money a secret and ordered others to do the same. When you see “Inside Out” in the theater this summer, the short film in front of it will be called “Lava,” and it is a labor of love for writer/director James Ford Murphy. If you want to know about the film itself, you should check out my reaction piece from the event, which I'll post on Wednesday, but before I left the Pixar campus, I sat down with Murphy to talk about his film, the inspiration behind it, and the odd effect it had on the animators who worked on it. When I walked into the room, he looked at my shirt, which read “Cassius Clay,” and immediately remarked on it. We talked about boxing and Ali specifically for a few before the publicist asked us to start. It put us in a great mood as the conversation opened.
