The tributes continue to pour in following the shocking death of Academy Award winner Gene Hackman. While the actor was well-known for his intense, often terrifying performances in the likes of Unforgiven and The French Connection, he was not averse to providing the laughs too, starring in seminal director Mel Brooks’ beloved 1974 horror comedy Young Frankenstein.
Brooks has now paid tribute to the actor, taking to X/Twitter to reflect on their time working together, describing Hackman as “perfect” for the role of the blind hermit, Harold.
“I was privileged to know Gene Hackman because he played tennis with another Gene—Gene Wilder. And that Gene told him about a little role called The Blind Hermit in our movie Young Frankenstein. He said, “Do you think Mel would let me play it? I’ve always wanted to do a comedy.” Needless to say, I was over the moon and he was perfect.

Fathom Events is on track for a record-breaking 2024 with gross revenue of $145+ million, up 45% from $100 million a year ago, and plans to rebrand to Fathom Entertainment starting in January to better reflect its mission.
The 20-year-old distributor’s strong numbers reflect in large part an expansion from core and primarily events-based and limited engagements in recent years to include more special engagements with longer release windows. The new name, it said, reflects that evolution and “the start of a bold, new chapter for the company in the rapidly changing media and entertainment landscape.”
“With the significant decline in volume of major motion picture theatrical releases post-covid and the proliferation of streaming options at-home, present day audiences are constantly on the lookout for something fresh and different and uniquely relevant at the movie theatres,” said Fathom CEO Ray Nutt. “Consumer enthusiasm and embrace of specialty content in theatres has translated into Fathom’s highest-grossing year ever.

Specialty distributor Fathom Events is getting a new name starting in 2025, bolstered by record-breaking revenues in 2024 of over $145 million. The company, which is co-owned by AMC Theatres, Cinemark Theatres and Regal Cinemas, increased revenues 45% vs. last year and aims to continue to be the leader in live and recorded content, with a healthy dose of special engagements and event cinema, in 2025 when it will operate as Fathom Entertainment.
The company’s banner 2024 was marked by the success of the “Coraline” re-release, which grossed over $34 million, “The Chosen” series that pulled in over $32 million at the box office and “The Blind,” which grossed over $17 million.

Quick Links The Plot of 'The Blind Side' The Real-World Consequences Behind 'The Blind Side' 'The Blind Side' Has a Less Than Inspirational Legacy
Inspirational sports movies are one of the most proven film genres. Take a down-on-their-luck athlete, stack the odds against them, and watch them persevere and make something of themselves. Bonus points if the movie is based on a true story. The Blind Side checked all these boxes when it hit theaters in 2009. Based on the 2006 book The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game, it told the true story of the Tuohy family, who took in teenager Michael Oher from the foster care system. The Tuohys turned Oher's life around, ultimately helping him make it into college to play football.

Faith-based films have a unique niche in cinema, aiming to inspire and connect with audiences through stories of belief, perseverance, and redemption. This subgenre seems to be rising in popularity, given the success of films like The Sound of Freedom and The Blind. While there's certainly nothing wrong with telling religious stories in film, the subgenre is notorious for being preachy and amateurish, as well as subordinating its narrative to its message. For this reason, there are many awful faith-based movies out there.

I never quite understood the fan craze behind Sandra Bullock until I saw the 2009 rom-com The Proposal, starring Ryan Reynolds and one of the Golden Girls. Her comedic timing was impeccable and she could sing the heck out of Get Low by Lil Jon & The East Side Boyz.

Brash, abrasive, and rightfully confident, Toph is one of the most beloved characters in Avatar: The Last Airbender. She's an earthbending master with a legacy that extends all the way into Avatar: The Legend Of Korra. Toph joined Team Avatar as Aang's earthbending teacher, and her assistance played a vital role in his mastery of the elements.
Toph's role on Team Avatar is irreplaceable, and it's obvious that the show wouldn't be the same without her. Her blindness allows her to tap into seismic sense abilities and even become the first known earthbender to metalbend. Aside from her legendary earthbending skills, Toph is loved for her wit and her clever lines, so fans new and old will definitely recognize these iconic Toph quotes from Avatar: The Last Airbender.

In the decade and a half since its release, The Blind Side has not aged very well. The Blind Side is based on a true story that tells the supposedly true story of Michael Oher. Oher was an unhoused teenage boy who was later taken in by a family named the Tuohys. This family, who is white, takes in the then-teen Oher, who is Black, and fosters him before later adopting him. Now, Oher is better known for eventually becoming an NFL football player.
The Tuohys story was initially documented in the book The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game by Michael Lewis. Development of a film adaptation swiftly followed, with The Blind Side movie coming out just three years after the books 2006 publication. The fact that the film is based on a true story was a huge part of its marketing, promising audiences an inspiring and incredible, real account.

Michael Oher filed a lawsuit claiming that the depiction of his adoption in the movie "The Blind Side" was a lie and that the Tuohy family tricked him and profited off his name. The success of "The Blind Side" was partially due to its marketing as a true story, showcasing hope and determination, which appealed to audiences. A judge ruled to end the conservatorship held by the Tuohy family in September 2023.
Almost 14 years after the release of The Blind Side, Michael Oher came out with his side of the story, claiming that the movie, which was marketed as "based on a true story," was rooted in lies. Duck Dynasty became a global phenomenon when the reality series premiered in 2012. The Robertson family was catapulted to stardom as millions of viewers followed the famous duck hunters and their personal lives in the heart of Louisiana. The A&e series ran for 11 seasons until 2017. The Duck Dynasty fandom remains strong to this day, and many have wondered about a possible revival. Willie Robertson opened up about why a Duck Dynasty revival is not in the cards. “We are looking into some different TV ideas,” Robertson told TV Insider while promoting The Blind. “But to recapture what we did before is really not gonna happen. Sadly, everyone’s gotten older, and we’re all in different places now. Our cast has expanded drastically. I have seven grandkids now, so we’ve got some ideas.” Even though a Duck Dynasty revival is off the table, the Robertsons aren’t retreating from the spotlight.

Duck Dynasty star Willie Robertson shows a new side of dad Phil Robertson in The Blind, streaming exclusively on Great American Pure Flix. For Willie, telling his father’s incredible life story and the love he shares with his longtime wife Kay Robertson was “important” for Duck Dynasty fans to see onscreen. “[Duck Dynasty] is really the result of something,” Willie tells TV Insider. “It’s a result of their marriage, staying together, and our family staying together. We really felt like it’s an unbelievable story. It’s a story of redemption and faith. And now after 50 years, you’ve seen what has come out of that, especially with the TV show.” Willie executive produced the film alongside wife Korie Robertson through their production company Tread Lively. They went straight to the source to make sure they portrayed Phil and Kay’s relationship honesty. “It’s hard to go back and relive all that,...

Fathom Events, the company best known for bringing theater, opera, live events and concerts to screens, is currently on track for gross revenues of over $93 million. Despite the fact that the exhibition space has yet to fully recover from the Covid pandemic, Fathom is enjoying the best year in its history — it will surpass sales from 2019, previously the highest-grossing year in company history, by 116%. For further context, Fathom reported revenues of $68 million in 2022.
So what’s behind the surge? Fathom is chalking up the strong results to a pivot in business strategy for the company, one that saw it introduce a “specialty distribution” model. The goal was to bring a wider array of content to cinemas beyond the productions of the Metropolitan Opera that helped put Fathom on the map. It’s one that saw Fathom distribute faith-based films like “The Blind,” as well as release episodes of “The Chosen,...

Five recent releases debuted on different VOD charts this past week, and for the second week in a row, three different films took #1 among the three we follow. Two of these took #1 slots, with “Sound of Freedom” (Angel) atop Vudu and #2 at iTunes, while “Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie” (Paramount) reversing those positions at those two sites.
Google Play, which often lags behind the others seems particularly slow this week, with “The Equalizer 3” (Sony) still #1 even though it doesn’t make the top five at the other two. And “Paw Patrol” ranks only fourth, with “Sound of Freedom” seventh.
Netflix is back in Sony streamer mode, with “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” #1 and “Insidious: The Red Door” #2 (both new this week). But two recent festival-premiered originals took the two new spots. “Sly” (Stallone of course), a documentary, and “Nyad,” about the pioneering swimmer Diane Nyad with Annette Bening, are third and fourth respectively there.

The Blind is now the most successful release in the history of Fathom Events, as the faith-based feature has grossed $15.7 million at the North American box office as of Monday.
The film is Fathom’s first to see a longer theatrical run than its traditional event cinema releases. Originally slated for an eight-day run as part of Fathom’s new specialty distribution model, it was extended twice, Fathom said, and held a steady position in the top 10 for the duration of its more than three weeks in cinemas.
The Blind was produced by Tread Lively and Gnd Media Group. Andrew Hyatt directs the back-story of the star of Duck Dynasty, Phil Robertson. In 1960s Louisiana, Robertson falls in love and starts a family, but his demons soon threaten to tear everyone apart. As he seeks to conquer the shame of his past, he ultimately finds redemption in an unlikely place.

Taylor Swift‘s “experiment” to release a 2-hour-48-minute concert movie based on her “Eras” tour turned out to be quite a boon for the box office in a slower fall season. Read on for the weekend box office report.

Theater chain AMC took the distribution rights, working with Variance to get it into other theaters, with it ultimately ending up in 3,855 theaters, including 377 IMAX screens.

Barbie's streak in the box office top 10 has come to an end this past weekend due to a number of new releases, with director Greta Gerwig's film falling to the number 12 spot. Despite falling out of the top 10, Barbie was a major box office sensation, earning over $1.428 billion worldwide. The success of the film can be attributed to several factors, including Mattel brand awareness, the Barbenheimer phenomenon, strong reviews, and positive word-of-mouth.
Barbie has now fallen out of the box office top 10 list following a record-breaking theatrical run. Directed by Greta Gerwig and based on the iconic Mattel toy of the same name, Barbie stars Margot Robbie as the titular doll, following the character as she leaves Barbieland and embarks on a journey to the real world. The film was met with positive reviews from critics upon its release in mid-July and would become a box office sensation, earning over $1.428 billion worldwide.

Despite mixed reviews from critics and audiences, The Exorcist: Believer still managed to earn almost $30 million domestically in its opening weekend, exceeding expectations. The film holds the number one spot in the United States, bringing in $27.2 million, which is a significant return considering its $30 million budget. The international box office performance was not as strong, with the film making only $17.9 million, bringing its global total to $45 million. However, the studio has only recouped 10% of its $450 million investment so far.
What the devil is going on with The Exorcist: Believer? Critics absolutely lambasted the 50-year follow-up to 1973’s The Exorcist with only a 23% rating registering on the Tomatometer. Despite the amount of horror movies released in September, October seemed like a better time for the genre to get a bump with the latest attempt to revive a horror classic. That wasn’t really the case. Read on for the weekend box office report.
There were indeed some hopes that the David Gordon Green-directed “The Exorcist: Believer” would be the good start for a new trilogy based on the William Friedkin-directed 1973 adaptation of William Peter Blatty’s novel, a major theatrical blockbuster at the time that became a horror classic. Green even brought back Ellen Burstyn from the original movie, joining Leslie Odom Jr., Ann Dowd and Jennifer Nettles, as a continuation of Friedkin’s film.
Despite anticipation for another solid “requel” ala Green’s 2018 “Halloween,” “Believer” was universally panned by critics with an awful 23% on Rotten Tomatoes ahead of its release into 3,663 theaters by Universal. It...

It wasn’t her intention, but Taylor Swift saved this weekend as well as ones still to come.
“The Era Tour” concert film opens Friday with over $100 million in estimated presales, but it already forced “The Exorcist: Believer” (Universal), originally set for October 13, to move up a week and get out of the way.
As a result, the sequel to William Friedkin’s smash hit dominated this weekend with $27.2 million. That’s more than double the #2 title, “Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie” (Paramount), with $11.8 million.
All told, this weekend grossed around $75 million. Without “Exorcist,” and assuming other titles would pick up some of the slack, that number would have been closer to $55 million — and close to the worst of 2023. Instead, it improved $16 million (27 percent) over last year, which also included Indigenous Peoples’/Columbus Day on Monday. Year to date remains up about 26 percent.
Another way to find a positive spin...

The Exorcist: Believer saw a first weekend take of $27.2 million, coming in under even the most modest of projections, including our own low end $30 million prediction, yet still having the best opening of the franchise. That number represents a near $10 million improvement over the last theatrically released Exorcist film: 2004’s Exorcist: The Beginning ($18 million). That’s the good news, the bad news is that even with a franchise best opening and a reported budget of just $30 million before advertising, this opening is still a fairly sizable disappointment for the studio.
This film has gotten some absolutely horrendous reviews, including a 4/10 from our own Chris Bumbray who called it “awful.” Those reviews mixed with its horrible 54% audience score means this one will likely sink in the coming weeks. “The Exorcist: Believer,” a reboot in the legacy horror franchise, opened atop box office charts despite falling short of expectations.
The film, from Universal and Blumhouse, collected $27.2 million from 3,663 North American venues over the weekend, below estimates that suggested a debut closer to $35 million. “Believer” also opened at the international box office with $17.8 million for a global start of $45.1 million. The “Exorcist” sequel cost $30 million, so it’s well-positioned in its theatrical run.
But reviews (23% on Rotten Tomatoes) and audience scores (“C” CinemaScore) were terrible, so the studio may need to reconsider its strategy before the next installment opens in 2025. Universal spent a staggering $400 million to buy the rights to the terrifying property, with plans to at least develop a trilogy around these supernatural battles with the devil. They need moviegoers to feel invested in the series beyond this installment to justify that massive deal.

Universal spent a staggering $400 million to buy the rights to the terrifying property, with plans to at least develop a trilogy around these supernatural battles with the devil. They need moviegoers to feel invested in the series beyond this installment to justify that massive deal.

The Exorcist: Believer had no trouble delivering a first-place finish at the weekend box office with an estimated $27.2 million from 3,663 theaters. While a respectable opening in this climate, the R-rated film came in below expectations domestically as it tries to revive the franchise after Universal reportedly paid a hefty $400 million for rights.
Overseas, the pic started off with $17.9 million from its first 52 markets for a global start of $45.1 million.
The David Gordon Green-directed horror pic hits theaters exactly 50 years after the first Exorcist opened and made cinema history, grossing nearly $450 million at the global box office before adjusting for inflation. Directed by William Friedkin, the film was based on the book by William Peter Blatty and starred Linda Blair and Ellen Burstyn.
The Believer recently had to move up its release by one week after Taylor Swift announced that her new concert film, The Eras Tour, will open across the globe on Oct.

Nearly 50 years after William Friedkin’s “The Exorcist” landed in theaters to leg out a run as the highest-grossing feature of 1973, a new sequel to it is opening on top of the box office. Universal’s “The Exorcist: Believer” compelled audiences to the tune of an $11.9 million opening day from 3,663 locations, a number including $2.85 million in previews.
The Blumhouse and Morgan Creek Entertainment production should have no trouble taking the top spot through the weekend, though “Believer” now looks to be debuting lower than its more optimistic projections, which had forecast a $30 million gross over the three-day frame. The horror entry should take in around $28 million through Sunday.
The film is also doing much less business than director David Gordon Green’s last spin on a classic horror franchise at Blumhouse; his 2018 “Halloween” became a smash hit with a $76 million debut. “Believer” also won’t be matching the 1973 original’s run,...

After several quiet weeks in movie theaters, four films entered wide release over the weekend. “Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie” came out the top dog, with $23 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday.
The performances of all four films – “Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie,” “Saw X,” “The Creator” and “Dumb Money” – told a familiar story at the box office. What worked? Horror and animated franchises. What didn’t? Originality and comedy.

“Paw Patrol,” from Paramount Pictures and Spin Master, had timing on its side. The film, a sequel to the 2021 “Paw Patrol” movie adapted from the Nickelodeon TV series, was the first family animated movie in theatres since “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” was released in early August.

Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie emerges as the top dog at the weekend box office, bringing in $23 million domestically, while Saw X takes second place with $18 million. Paw Patrol dominates the international box office as well, bringing in $24.4 million, followed by The Creator with $18.3 million. Who let the dogs out? Insert whichever absurd idiom might be most appropriate here, but in the end Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie still came out as the top dog — love those puns — at the weekend box office. There wasn’t any question that it was going to be a three-way race in cinemas between Paw, Saw X and The Creator. But when the dust cleared, The Mighty Movie easily laid claim to the top spot. Paw Patrol brought in $23 million domestically (per Box Office Mojo), which outpaced Tobin Bell...
