The British Film Commission (Bfc) and the Netherlands Film Commission (NFC) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to boost collaboration between each country’s screen industries.

The partnership agreement was signed at the Dutch Embassy in London as part of a Netherlands-uk familiarisation trip for producers from both countries on December 9.

Attendees included representatives of the Netherlands Film Fund, the Netherlands Film Commission and a group of line producers from the Netherlands.

Both film commissions said the MoU aims to foster a seamless, film-friendly service for inward investment film and high-end TV productions working across both territories.

Adam Driver, Tom Waits, Mayim Balik, and more have joined Cate Blanchett in the cast of Jim Jarmusch’s new film, Father Mother Sister Brother.

Per Variety, the film recently wrapped production in Paris after previous shoots in Dublin and New Jersey, and will be completed later this year. The film is a triptych that follows three separate stories between parents and their adult children — one in Paris, one in Dublin, and one in the American Northeast.

The film’s description deems Father Mother Sister Brother as a “comedy interwoven with threads of melancholy,” with “character studies, quiet, observational and non-judgmental.” Jarmusch had hinted that the film will have a musical component, but it’s unknown whether the film will feature original songs or not. In addition to Driver, Waits, and Balik, Vicky Krieps, Charlotte Rampling, Indya Moore, and Luka Sabbat have also joined the cast.

Franchise animation Kung Fu Panda 4 and creature clash Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire lead a bumper weekend of 16 new films at the UK-Ireland box office.

Universal’s Kung Fu Panda 4 has the biggest opening of the weekend in 715 sites – a significant jump for the series, after 2008’s Kung Fu Panda (448) and sequels in 2011 (514) and 2016 (585), all through Paramount.

Conversely, the total grosses of each film have dropped, with the first title making £20.4m, followed by £17m and £14.2m for the sequels. All of these were pre-pandemic; number four will look to cross the £10m mark before challenging any of those totals.

Sony’s “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” debuted atop the U.K. and Ireland box office with £4 million ($5.1 million), according to numbers from Comscore.

In the process, the band of ectoplasm hunters ended the three-week reign of Warner Bros.’ “Dune: Part II” in pole position. The Timothée Chalamet-starring film collected £2.6 million in its fourth weekend in second place for a total of £30.7 million.

Black Bear’s “Immaculate,” starring Sydney Sweeney, scared up £522,583 in a third place debut. In fourth place, in its fifth weekend, Studiocanal’s “Wicked Little Letters” earned £373,505 and now has a total of £8.1 million.

Rounding off the top five was Universal’s “Migration” that collected £370,464 in its eighth weekend for a total of £19.5 million.

There were two more debuts in the top 10 – Vertigo’s “Late Night With The Devil” in seventh place with £220,436 and Trafalgar’s “Romeo Et Juliette – Met Opera 2023/24” in 10th with £81,880.

Vicky Knight & Esmé Creed-Miles shine with their onscreen chemistry. The cinematography and sound create effective emotional moments. Silver Haze focuses on expressive visuals rather than a strong narrative.

Silver Haze is an appropriate title for writer-director Sacha Polak’s movie, which feels like drifting through a nonsensical but very real wave of emotion. Leading Silver Haze is Vicky Knight as Franky, a nurse who is still looking for answers about the fire that left her badly scarred 15 years ago. Her time is taken up with work, caring for her alcoholic mother, and an unsatisfying relationship with her boyfriend. However, Franky is set on a path of transformation and healing when she meets Florence (Esmé Creed-Miles), a new patient.

It’s Oscar month. And that means Best Picture alt-poster time.

Four of my favorites are below, courtesy of the usual suspects. I love that some (George Grey and Eileen Steinbach) use a consistent theme to connect their line-up while others (Haley Turnbull and Matt Needle) create whatever that title inspires in them. There’s obviously no wrong direction to head and, regardless of which they choose, we get to enjoy the spoils of extra art long past the actual marketing campaigns.

And despite those nominees not necessarily needing the added boost, it is nice for us to receive another in-road to talk about them again. Because, as is usually the case, the morning after the Oscars unofficially moves everyone’s attention towards next year’s hopefuls (if Sundance praise hasn’t done so already).

Marleen Slot will take over from Antoine Simkine in April 2024.

European network Ace Producers has appointed Dutch producer Marleen Slot as its new president, effective from April 19, 2024.

Slot will take over from current president Antoine Simkine, who has held the role since 2018.

Slot will work closely with Ace director Jacobine van der Vloed in developing Ace’s vision and strategy.

A member of Ace Producers since she participated in the Ace 19 programme in 2009, Slot’s involvement with the producers network has included as a speaker, consultant and expert. She is currently serving as vice-president and is a board member for Ace Producers.

Writers, directors and producers will take part in a series of masterclasses, screenings and networking opportunities from October 6-9.

“It’s absolutely clear, there is a real appetite for British independent cinema in France,” said artistic director Dominque Green.

Sasha Polak’s Silver Haze scooped the top prize at this month’s Dinard Film Festival, the French seaside festival that spotlights UK and Irish cinema for French audiences, that ran from September 27 to October 1.

Berlinale Panorama title Silver Haze won the Golden Hitchcock for best film. Polak’s feature reunites the Dutch filmmaker with UK actor Vicky Knight, after working together on Dirty God in 2019. It is loosely based on Knight’s own experience as a child, in which she survived an arson attack.

BFI Distribution has acquired Berlinale Panorama title Silver Haze from New Europe Film Sales for theatrical release in the UK and Ireland.

The first time Jim Jarmusch came to Cannes was with his sophomore film Stranger Than Paradise, which played the Quinzaine in 1984. “We all shared one apartment that had no hot water, that was up the hill,” he recalls. “One day I had to be on TV and there was no water, so I had to shave with leftover tea.” Those days are long gone; Jarmusch is a fixture on the Croisette these days, and even had the dubious pleasure of opening it in 2019 with his Bill Murray-starring zombie comedy The Dead Don’t Die.

This year he arrived at the festival with a piece for Cannes Classics called The Return to Reason, a work-in-progress restoration of four films by American artist Man Ray shot in Paris during the early 1920s. Just a few weeks ago we got the welcome news that Jim Jarmusch is finally planning to shoot a new feature this year, backed by Saint Laurent. Then just today, a special collaboration featuring Jarmusch scoring Man Ray restorations was announced for Cannes. Those two don’t mark the only projects the artist is up to: after many singles, EPs, and score contributions to his own films, Jarmusch and Carter Logan’s band SQÜRL have now released their first fully-fledged album, titled “Silver Haze.”

“The length of things that you release [is] so arbitrary,” Jarmusch told Spin. “For example, our feature films are 90 minutes to two and a half hours based on the turnaround in a movie theater. It’s not based on the aesthetic design of filmmaking, because a great film can be two minutes long or six hours long. The whole idea of these arbitrary formats are interesting and silly,...

Jim Jarmusch has been an independent film lynchpin since “Stranger Than Paradise” in 1984. Since then, he has released everything from hip-hop martial arts movies to vampire romances while maintaining his fiercely independent spirit and distinctive voice. But even he worries that artists face an increasingly uninhabitable landscape.

In an interview with The Guardian to promote his new album “Silver Haze,” Jarmusch expressed serious concerns about the lack of sustainable business models for independent filmmakers.

“The film industry is kind of gone,” Jarmusch said. “It sucks. It’s gotten worse. The kind of split-rights deals – an equal 50-50 shared profits, after costs, with financiers – that I used to be able to do with my films… if you even suggested that now, you would be laughed out of the fucking building.”

Jarmusch admitted that his famously uncompromising creative process is increasingly incompatible with the current economic environment that filmmakers have to work in.

Considering it’s never been more than a few years between feature films for Jim Jarmusch, here’s hoping we get news about his next project soon. In the meantime, after many singles, EPs, and score contributions to his own films, Jarmusch and Carter Logan’s band SQÜRL is now set to release their first fully-fledged album. Titled “Silver Haze,” it’ll drop on May 5 via Sacred Bones and the first single “Berlin ’87” has arrived.

SQÜRL, the duo of filmmaker Jim Jarmusch and Carter Logan, have announced their debut album, Silver Haze, out May 5th via Sacred Bones. As a preview, they’ve shared the opening track, “Berlin ’87,” and its accompanying video.

Silver Haze is described in a press release as “a poetic journey of spoken words, dynamic instrumentals, drone riffs, and distorted effects, one that features tubular bells and a cello in addition to their signature stacks of delay, encircling the listener in a warm oscillation both delicate and devastating.”

“Berlin ’87” features heavy, droning guitar riffs first laid down by Jarmusch in his home studio while inspired by memories of living in — you guessed it — Berlin in 1987. The skeleton track was then “SQÜRLized by Carter and Randall at Circular Ruin,” according to a press release.

Apalow’s drama follows the story of two men, Bambino and Bawa, who meet in Lagos and immediately hit it off but struggle, in a society where homosexuality is illegal and socially taboo, to give into their desires. Jan Naszewski’s Warsaw-based sales outlet New Europe Film Sales has sold North American distribution rights for its Berlinale-selected drama “Delegation” to Greenwich Entertainment.

“Delegation” is a story of three Israeli high school friends who take part in a class trip visiting Holocaust sites in Poland – their last time together before going to the army. During the trip, shy boy Frisch, aspiring artist Nitzan and class heartthrob Ido deal with issues of love, friendship and politics against the backdrop of concentration camps and memorial sites. The journey will change them forever.

The deal for the film, which had its premiere in the Generation 14Plus competition, was negotiated by Naszewski and Greenwich co-president Edward Arentz.

The producers of Focus Features’ “Polite Society” have launched their next project with “Lollipop,” the fiction debut feature of Daisy-May Hudson, which stars Posy Sterling, TerriAnn Oudjar and newcomer Idil Ahmed.

The film, which has wrapped after a five-week shoot in London, is the first major title for new sales agent and financier Architect, set up by former Embankment Films executives Calum Gray and Max Pirkis. The company will launch the title at this month’s European Film Market, which runs alongside the Berlin Film Festival.

Les Arcs Film Festival has unveiled the 15-title lineup of its Work-in-Progress session, the popular industry sidebar whose alumni roster include Vladimar Jóhannsson’s “Lamb,” Lukas Dhont’s “Girl” and Nora Fingscheidt’s “System Crasher.”

The section, curated by Frederic Boyer, the artistic director of Tribeca and Les Arcs Film Festival, will include “Opponent,” a drama by Swedish up-and-comer Milad Alami (“The Charmer”) and produced by Sweden’s Tangy and Norway’s Ape&Bjørn; “Preparations for a Miracle,” directed by Tobias Nölle and produced by Switzerland’s Hugofilm Features and Germany’s Flare Film; and “Silver Haze,” helmed by Sacha Polak and produced by Dutch banner Viking Film and the U.K.’s Emu Films.
