For a while now there's been talk that 20th Century Fox is developing a Zorro reboot which would take the masked crusader from the past into the not-so-distant post-apocalyptic future. Last anyone heard of the project titled Zorro Reborn, it had passed through a few writers and landed with Gael García Bernal attached as Zorro and Ricardo de Montreuil, the director of the much buzzed about The Raven (see the short).

Turns out that in early 2012, de Montreuil shot a concept trailer in South Africa with the help of Peruvian actor Jason Day as Zorro. Trapped alone in her house, she must now try to survive before the murderer finds her.

Perez, a writer and director based in Los Angeles, previously co-wrote the hit sci-fi short The Raven and is currently Senior Producer for On-Air Creative at mun2/NBCUniversal, where his work has received numerous awards. Luna is his love letter to the classic horror films that inspired his childhood nightmares, such as Halloween and An American Werewolf in London.

Studio to return Rudyard Kipling's tale to big screen – at same time as Warner Bros plans rival adaptation

Disney is planning a live-action take on The Jungle Book, Rudyard Kipling's iconic collection of fables that inspired the classic animation of the same name.

The project is the second film based on Kipling's 1894 collection – which is out of copyright – to be announced. Rival studio Warner Bros is also planning a version, with Harry Potter's Steve Kloves working on the screenplay.

Variety reports that Disney's version will once again centre on the "mancub" Mowgli, who is raised by wolves in the Indian jungle. His friends include a bear, Baloo, and a panther, Bagheera, while the vicious tiger Shere Khan is among his enemies. Mowgli's story was just one of a number of morally toned fables in Kipling's tome, but Disney will overlook other chapters such as the story of heroic...

Taking care of some international promotional duties, Gerard Butler attended a press conference for his new film “Olympus Has Fallen” in Tokyo, Japan today (May 28).

The “Ps: I Love You” actor was joined by Japanese model Nana Suzuki as he greeted fans and reporters at the Park Hyatt ahead of the June 8th theatrical release.

Olympus Has Fallen star Butler is in talks to star in the Universal Pictures thriller.

Butler is tipped to play a man desired by both the government and the military for his special powers, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The Raven is based on the 2010 short film of the same name, which was written by Ricardo de Montreuil and Antonio Perez. De Montreuil is still attached to direct The Raven.

Michael Gilio has adapted the script from Montreuil and Perez's original story, working from an earlier draft by Justin Marks.

Liam Hemsworth was previously in the running for the lead role in the movie before the project stalled.

Mark Wahlberg and Steve Levinson will also serve as producers with Paul Brooks. Scott Niemeyer - Brooks's colleague at Gold Circle - has been named as an executive producer on the feature.

You may remember that a couple of years ago, a sci-fi action short called The Raven began grabbing a lot of attention in Hollywood. The film was made for just $5,000 and shot within 48 hours (though there’s no way you’d be able to tell by looking at it) and it garnered 50,000 hits within two days of being made available online.

Eight months later, director Ricardo de Montreuil negotiated a deal with Mark Wahlberg and Steve Levinson to produce a feature-length version of the film for Universal Pictures. Montreuil will return to direct from a script by Michael Gilio as well as Justin Marks, and production is set to start in June.

We recently reported that Gael Garcia Bernal had been cast as the lead in Zorro Reborn, a post apocalyptic take on the legend of the character. The film is based on a script that was originally written by Lee Shipman and Brian McGreevy (Harker) and later rewritten by Glenn Gers (Fracture).

In addition to the post apocalyptic setting, Zorro Reborn will distance itself further from the traditions of the legend by not setting the action in either California or Mexico.

When we brought you the news of Bernal’s casting, Fox was still without a director. But now? It appears it has a favourite in Peruvian director Ricardo de Montreuil, whose short film The Raven has impressed many an exec of late. Fox’s plans to produce a post-apocalyptic spin on the masked vigilante Zorro, titled Zorro Reborn, has prompted a lot of eyebrow raising and/or eye rolling so far. That immediate skepticism subsided somewhat a few weeks back, when acclaimed character actor Gael Garcia Bernal was tapped to portray a futuristic version of the eponymous warrior.

Today we can report on another interesting development in the Zorro reboot’s journey to the big screen: the current front-runner to direct the feature is Peruvian filmmaker Ricardo de Montreuil, a fellow who gained a lot of notice around Tinseltown thanks to his 2010 short titled “The Raven.”

The director of the popular short film The Raven, Ricardo de Montreuil, has come out on top as 20th Century Fox's choice to direct Zorro Reborn. 

The film is described as "a futuristic reboot of the Zorro mythology that will not be set in California or Mexico, despite the story's Western themes." Gael Garcia Bernal (Y Tu Mama Tambien, The Science of Sleep, Blindness) will be taking on the role of the legendary Spanish swordsman as a masked vigilante hell-bent on revenge against an evil tyrant and his gang of mercenaries.

Zorro Reborn was scripted by Glenn Gers, along with Harker scribes Lee Shipman and Brian McGreevy. According to Variety as of right now De Montreuil will direct the screen test for Bernal, but he's not officially signed on to direct the movie... yet. I imagine they're waiting to see how he does with the screen test.

After watching the short, I have to say, I understand why Fox is talking Montreuil for possibly directing Zorro Reborn. The CGI used in the short looks amazing, and could be just the things we could be seeing in Zorro Reborn. Though it started as a very insider thing, The Black List has recently become more popular and mainstream. For those who may not know, it's an annual list of the year's best unproduced screenplays as voted on by about 300 Hollywood development executives and high-level assistants. We recently posted the 2010 list [1] and looking back at some previous years (2007 [2], 2008 [3], 2009 [4]), films such as Recount, The Beaver and The Social Network all sat near the top of the list. Skim over any of them and you'll see names of films that are out, are coming out and more. It's a big deal. This year, a new Black List of sorts has come out. Dubbed Viewfinder, it's supposed to do for directors what The Black List did for screenwriters. Viewfinder is a compilation of "the top commercials, shorts and/or music videos of 2010." Several of the directors on the list already have deals or are in production on films.

Deadline doesn't post anonymous lists. But it turns out there's sort-of The Black List for "aspiring" filmmakers (Iñárritu?), put together by Patrick Chu of Montecito Picture Company and Aaron Schmidt of Langley Park Pictures, and conceived by Jeff Schroeder, a Wme assistant. dubbed "Viewfinder", it polled studio execs, producers, and assistants for their picks for the top 10 short films, commercials and/or music videos in 2010. Mark Wahlberg has signed on to produce and star in a sci-fi thriller called “The Raven”, which will be written and directed by Ricardo De Montreuil based on his short film of the same name (you can see that short film below). Shia Labeouf and Tom Hardy are teaming up for the Prohibition-era dramatic thriller The Wettest County in the World, from director John Hillcoat (The Road), reports 24 Frames. Nick Cave wrote the screenplay, based on a novel from Matt Bondurant about a family of Prohibition-era bootleggers, and crimes committed by and against them.

Universal has picked up rights to Ricardo de Montreuil’s short film The Raven, (I guess he has something against Crows) which is being developed as a starring vehicle for Mark Wahlberg, who is also attached to produce, reports Heat Vision. Mark Wahlberg and his business partner Steve Levinson are set to produce a feature-length version of Ricardo de Montreuil’s sci-fi short The Raven, following Universal’s acquisition of the rights to the project, according to reports. Wahlberg is said to star, as well.

The studio had been eyeing the project for several months, but negotiations were only recently solidified.

The Raven, a six-minute thriller that was reportedly made for a mere $5,000 by the Peruvian director, follows a man with supernatural powers as he is chased in the future through the streets of downtown Los Angeles. (Video embedded below).

First linked six months ago by Latino Review, Mark Wahlberg has now apparently locked down a deal with Universal to produce and possibly star in a feature length adaptation of Ricardo De Montreuil's short film "The Raven" reports Heat Vision.

The short follows a man with powers being chased around Los Angeles by police drones, which are co-ordinated by a huge ship above the city. Wahlberg’s partner Steve Levinson is producing from a script by Justin Marks.

de Montreuil was originally slated to direct, but the filmmaker recently signed onto "Lowriders" for producer Brian Grazer. That project, written by Cheo Hodari Coke, involves a young man becoming a street cruiser success story who must take on the "local badass".

Schedules are presently unsure on either project, and Wahlberg is committed to a few other films including Seth MacFarlane's "Ted" and David O. Russell's "Uncharted".

Mark Wahlberg (The Other Guys) will produce and star as the lead character in The Raven for Universal. Adapted from the 5 minute short film by Ricardo De Montreuil (currently, you can see it on the KidsPickFlicks home page), The Raven is about a man with special powers being pursued by futuristic Lapd robo-droids with police HQ overseeing the mission from a spaceship that hangs in the sky District 9 style.

De Montreuil was recently hired to helm the Brian Grazer/Imagine Entertainment pic Lowriders.

Universal Pictures will be turning Ricardo de Montreuil's short film The Raven in a feature film.  It was announced yesterday that they have acquired feature rights for the short.

The film is being developed as a starring vehicle for Mark Wahlberg and De Montreuil is set to direct from a script written by Justin Marks.  Wahlberg is also going to be producing alongside Steve Levinson. Nick Osborne, Trevor Engelson with Oly Obst executive producing for Underground Films.

Peruvian director Ricardo de Montreuil has signed to direct “Lowriders” for Universal and Imagine Entertainment. The Hollywood Reporter described the movie that “follows a kid from Pacoima with a dead-end job and dreams of building the perfect lowrider. When he finds fortune and fame, the local bad ass wants a piece of him, and he questions his pursuit of the American dream.” De Montreuil was nominated for the grand jury prize at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival for “Mancora.” He also created “The Raven,” a sci-fi short that generated a lot of buzz. Ricardo de Montreuil has signed on to direct Lowriders, a coming-of-age drama in the vein of 8 Mile. According to THR, the film centers on a young kid who dreams of building the perfect lowrider: “When he finds fortune and fame, the local bad ass wants a piece of him, and he questions his pursuit of the American dream.” Cheo Hodari Coker (Notorious) will write the script based on an idea by producer Brian Grazer (Robin Hood).

De Montreuil is an up and comer from Peru. His Máncora was nominated for the grand jury prize at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival, and his sci-fi short film The Raven made some some waves in industry and internet alike earlier this year. Hit the jump to check it out for yourself.

Indie Sci-Fi has produced some killer stuff over the past few years, just take a look at films like the Neill Blomkamp directed District 9 or the upcoming big-screen adaptation of Ricardo de Montreuil‘s short film, The Raven which was recently picked up by Universal Pictures and will be produced by, and star Mark Wahlberg.

Lets hope that first-time writer/director Jeremy Morris-Burke follows in their footsteps with his inaugural foray into sci-fi entitled, Jim. Marks also adapted the DC Comics series Super Max aka The Green Arrow for David Goyer, and Shadow of the Colossus for Sony Pictures Entertainment. His credits include 20,000 League Under the Sea: Captain Nemo, the film that Disney put in dry dock. Marks continues with manager Adam Kolbrenner.
