Pub- based comedy drama Mother’s Pride will be in cinemas next year, and the cast has now been confirmed.
The British film industry has been releasing a steady stream of comedy dramas over the last few years, full of homegrown talent both in front of and behind the camera.
In 2018, Stephen Graham and comedian Dave Johns led the cast of wrestling comedy Walk Like A Panther, although perhaps the most notable example is the Fisherman’s Friends series, which chronicled the unlikely story of a group of fisherman who form a band and release an album of sea shanties to critical and commercial acclaim.
This led to life imitating art, as the actual band the film was based on saw a huge surge in popularity, with albums climbing up the charts and multiple sell out national tours.

Prime Video has debuted the trailer for the Christmas movie sequel ‘Your Christmas or Mine 2.’
The follow-up follows young couple James (Asa Butterfield), and Hayley (Cora Kirk), who are gearing up for their second Christmas as a couple. And that can only mean one thing … more mayhem with the Taylor and Hughes families.
It’s the most wonderful time of the year … but will it be for James and Hayley? James’ father has invited the Taylors to spend Christmas in a luxury ski resort in the Austrian Alps, so they can meet his new American girlfriend (played by Jane Krakowski). However, Hayley’s dad Geoff insisted on handling his family’s side of the booking and something clearly got lost in translation. After a mix-up with transport at the airport, the two tribes end up at each other’s accommodations, on different sides of a valley and opposite ends of the Tripadvisor ratings scale.

Rory Kinnear is brilliant in this warming comedy about a Burnley businessman who took on London’s elite and won
Here is the latest film to roll off the production line of cheerful warming British underdog comedies. As originally showcased in a 2012 Channel 4 series, it is the true story of how self-made Burnley businessman Dave Fishwick took on London’s elite banking institutions to get a licence to open his own bank serving the local community. More accurately, this film is a heavily fictionalised version of that story, slickly packaged into a familiar formula by the team behind Fisherman’s Friends.
Rory Kinnear is brilliant as Fishwick, who made his fortune selling vans and minibuses but has never forgotten his roots. Kinnear gives the character a winning mix of down-to-earth blokiness with a rags-to-riches flamboyance (and a bit of ego to match the flash car). The film opens in the...

Released in 2019, Fisherman's Friends tells the unlikely true story of a group of Cornwall-bred fishermen who became pop stars thanks to their soulful renditions of traditional British sea shanties. The film was successful enough to garner a sequel, Fisherman's Friends: One and All, which tells a fictionalized version of the band's quest to play at the legendary Glastonbury Festival.
Fisherman's Friends: One and All sees many of the original cast returning to reprise their roles, including leading man James Purefoy as Jim, whose pride and masculine posturing clouds his ability to confront the grief he feels over the death of his father (David Hayman) during the events of the original film. When the record label demands that the band hire a replacement to fill his late father's shoes, Jim turns to alcohol and self-destruction while giving into his depression. Sequel to comedy about a singing group of mates fortuitously brought to fame is likable enough but all too predictable
In 2019, Cornwall’s sea shanty group Fisherman’s Friends got the Full Monty treatment, when the story of how they hit the big time after a record exec discovered them singing down their local pub inspired a good-humoured harmless comedy. One the major charms of Fisherman’s Friends is their authenticity: a bunch of mates singing for pleasure and for each other is a world away from manufactured pop. So, it was a bit of shame that the original film had that slightly flavourless taste of a factory-made British feelgood comedy. That goes double for this sequel.
A chunk of the very likable cast is back. James Purefoy returns as lead singer Jim, who has hit the bottle after the death of his dad, Fisherman’s co-founder Jago, at the end of the first movie.

There was a time, in the 1990s and early 2000s, in which Miramax and Fox Searchlight pumped out feel-good, British comedy-dramas on a yearly basis. Films like The Full Monty, Brassed Off, and Billy Elliott had the format down to a science. These days are not over; the production companies have changed, but 2019’s Military Wives and Fisherman’s Friends had the same combination of crowd-pleasing warmth, kitchen-sink drama, and ultimate triumph––not to mention real-life source material. The documentary Alien On Stage checks almost every one of those boxes, so it is likely only a matter of time before the doc earns a fictional retelling.
Mind you, that is not a criticism. Alien On Stage, which is screening at the 2021 South by Southwest Festival, is a modest pleasure. Directed by Lucy Harvey, it is the rather delightful story of a group of bus drivers and crew in Dorset, England, who...

“You’ve been commissioned to write a 90-page screenplay, not ‘War and Peace.'” With these airy words, in the opening minutes of “Blithe Spirit,” exasperated trophy wife Ruth (Isla Fisher) admonishes her first-time screenwriter husband Charles (Dan Stevens) as he twitchily battles writers’ block. Then she adds a kicker: “How can it be so difficult to adapt a story you’ve already written?” If her frustration with the whiny, self-absorbed Charles is hardly misplaced, her assumptions about screenwriting are nonetheless off-base. Penning a good, short, pithy screenplay is no easy feat, even when working from solidly proven source material — and one need look no further than “Blithe Spirit,” a tin-eared, lumpen-footed, almost perversely unfunny new spin on Noël Coward’s breezy 1940s farce, for proof.

Near the beginning of the British comedy “Fisherman’s Friends,” we’re treated to a choir of fisherman belting out a rendition of the classic sea shanty, “John Karaka.” The crew is singing against a coral sky, and singing well enough to earn a record deal offer from a hot-shot producer. The lads laugh in his face. But then they think it over: Why not sing on the radio and make some money?
Why not, indeed?

It has been another rough week for those looking forward to movie theaters becoming a thing again. Tenet was delayed indefinitely. Major chains postponed their reopening plans and we are seemingly further away from a return to the theatrical experience. But fear not, as plenty of new movies are arriving this week to stream from the comfort of home.
This week sees the release of Dave Franco's feature directorial debut, a rom-com sequel on Netflix and a buzzy horror flick. We also have Donnie Yen reprising one of his most iconic roles, a biopic about Marie Curie and even something for the kids to enjoy. Here are this week's streaming selections.

The moment a group of Cornish fishermen and lifeboatmen turned their charitable crooning on the shore of Port Isaac into a Universal Music record deal that saw them debut in the top ten was the moment producers started falling over themselves to sign the life rights for a cinematic adaptation. I guess that’s the power of Fisherman’s Friends and their inspiring bond steeped in history, work ethic, family, and friendship. They’re a band that’s as easy to underestimate as they are to champion once they’ve proven you wrong because the music doesn’t lie.
That doesn’t, however, mean that screenwriters Piers Ashworth, Meg Leonard, and Nick Moorcroft had a...
