Movie musicals are hard. Much like the impending workshop performance that could make or break Jonathan Larson’s (Andrew Garfield) career in musical theater, the first 10 minutes of “Tick Tick Boom” could make or break its ability to do anything.
Beyond the usual musical problem of getting an audience comfortable with singing and dancing one moment and characters behaving more naturalistically the next, the film had a couple of particular challenges it needs to overcome quickly. The first was to contextualize Larson’s legacy for viewers who weren’t already read-in to “Rent.” The second challenge was that the film doesn’t just have musical numbers and dramatic scenes: It has a performance that serves as the frame story and launch-point for both kinds of scenes. The audience needs to understand how we move between each kind of environment and feel the changes as intuitive and natural, lest we get lost.

Pink Floyd have been little more than a memory for the past quarter-century, and the three surviving members are now in their mid-seventies, but their ancient feud somehow lingers on. The latest battle revolves around Waters being locked out of the band’s official website and Facebook page. That means he can’t share news of any of his solo projects, including his upcoming This Is Not a Drill Tour and his new rendition of “Mother,” with Floyd fans. He recently took to his own Facebook page to vent about the situation.

While Lionel Richie’s career includes such accolades as selling more than 100 million albums and achieving countless honors, from an Academy Award to four Grammy Awards, one of the accomplishments he is most proud of is his bachelor’s degree in economics from Tuskegee University.
In the Commodores, he developed a groundbreaking style that defied genre categories, penning smashes such as “Three Times A Lady,” “Still” and “Easy.” The diamond-certified Album Of The Year Grammy winner Can’t Slow Down followed in 1983, giving the world classics such as “All Night Long (All Night),” “Penny Lover,” “Stuck On You,” and “Hello.” His music continued to push boundaries and unite listeners worldwide. It’s because he wasn’t afraid to break genre barriers and craft something singular and timeless.

“The Red Turtle” represents the year’s best example of global animation. Director Michael Dudok de Wit is Dutch, it was co-produced by Japan’s legendary Studio Ghibli and it was made by French animation studio Prima Linea. The result a sublime cycle of life Oscar contender, which “uses time to relate the absence of time, like music can enhance silence,” according to de Wit, Oscar winner for the “Father and Daughter” short.

Cannes winner “The Red Turtle” (co-produced by Studio Ghibli) is arguably the most sublime animated Oscar contender. Michael Dudok de Wit, who directed the Academy Award-winning short, “Father and Daughter,” tells a 2D cycle of life story that “uses time to relate the absence of time, like music can enhance silence.”
A man shipwrecked on a lush tropical island inhabited by crabs, turtles and birds tries to escape by building and rebuilding a raft, continually wrecked by a mysterious red turtle, which transforms into a beautiful red-headed woman who becomes his companion and soul mate. Eventually, they have a son together.

“The Red Turtle” won instant adulation when it premiered at the Cannes Film Festival this year, with many reserving particular praise for director Michaël Dudok de Wit’s ability to tell his story without the assistance of dialogue. De Wit spoke to the Film Stage about his experience making the film, which marks Studio Ghibli’s first international co-production, explaining that he was so shocked when the vaunted animation studio reached out to him that he asked, “Can you explain why you chose me?

Michiyo Yasuda, a longtime animator and color designer for Studio Ghibli, has passed away at age 77. Her credits at the vaunted animation studio span decades, from its very first release in 1986 (“Castle in the Sky”) to Hayao Miyazaki’s final film (“The Wind Rises”) three years ago; it would be easier to list the revered projects made by both Ghibli and Miyazaki that she did not contribute to.

“Clerks” has inspired legions of loyal fans in its 22 years of existence, few of them more devoted than Christopher Downie. The 31-year-old filmmaker is set to make his debut feature with “Shooting Clerks,” a film about — you guessed it — the making of Kevin Smith’s debut feature. Still with a keen eye for a meaty political drama, George Clooney has picked up the film rights to FBI man Joe Navarro's book Three Minutes To Doomsday. Smokehouse Pictures, which Clooney runs with Grant Heslov, announced the deal over the weekend.Navarro is a specialist in non-verbal communication and body language, the author of previous works like What Every Body Is Saying and Louder Than Words. He was an FBI agent for 25 years, focusing his talents on counterintelligence and behavioural assessment and helping to found the Bureau's Behavioural Analysis programme. Three Minutes To Doomsday covers his operations during the Cold War.The book is not yet published - although it's ready to go with Simon & Schuster - and it's very early days for the film yet. There's no screenwriter yet announced as in place, and no information about Clooney's specific potential roles on either side of the camera. As an interesting footnote though,...

A girl rides her bicycle on a sunglazed afternoon in a typically isolated suburban neighborhood, during the pretty fall season. Her voiceover assumes what we’re all thinking, that this must be the beginning of a sad story. She assures us it’s not. She tells us that the story is about her family and how much they all love each other. It hasn’t even been 5 minutes and part of us already feels how much we’d be fighting the urge to change the channel if we happened on this opening of Anthony Fabian’s “Louder Than Words” on TV. (How infinitely more interesting it would be if the little girl could assume that!) But this is the furthest you can get from a Chris Miller and Phil Lord meta movie, so we’re stuck with a picture that rides on the coattails of its good intentions and doesn...

Louder Than Words features pretty people, pretty architecture, and pretty shots of nature, all of which seems a bit tone-deaf in a film built around a young girl's death from rabies.
A purportedly inspirational tale based on a true story, it makes The Fault In Our Stars look as raw as a Dardenne brothers film. While camping, Maria (Olivia Steele-Falconer) is bitten by a bat, although she doesn't even notice it at the time. A few days later, she dies in the hospital. Her parents, suburban Connecticut real estate developers John (David Duchovny) and Brenda (Hope Davis), take their grief and turn it into action by devising a plan for a more humane children's hospital, to be named after Maria.

While it.s obvious that not all depressing films will be inspirational to viewers, a sizable percentage of films deemed "inspirational" inevitably make me want to crawl into the corner of my couch and bury my head between the cushions while I contemplate my life and what it.s worth. (I usually find a quarter or so, which I accept as the answer.) Such is how I feel after watching the first trailer for Anthony Fabian.s upcoming drama Louder Than Words, a film that turns a personal tragedy into an institution that has gone on to prevent untold numbers of subsequent tragedies for others. Is somebody cutting onions in here, or is somebody just blowing dust into my eyes? Louder Than Words tells the true story of John Fareri (David Duchovny), his wife Brenda (Hope Davis), and their four kids. Back in 1995, the husband and wife experienced the unthinkable...

David Duchovny has spent the bulk of his career working in television, but 2013 should be a pretty big hear at the movies for him. While the projects he's doing aren't exactly huge blockbusters, he has the Larry Moss-directed dramedy Relative Insanity, with Helen Hunt and Maggie Grace as well as Anthony Fabian's drama After The Fall with Timothy Hutton and Hope Davis. But while neither of those titles has a specific release date yet, the submarine thriller Phantom will be arriving in theaters this March and today we have the film's first trailer. The preview is posted over on Apple where you can see it in HD, or you can check it out in our player below. Phantom stars Ed Harris as Demi, a Soviet submarine captain who is pushed away from retirement and time with his wife and family and forced to go on a top secret mission.
