When Robert Pattinson first sank his teeth into the role of Edward Cullen in Twilight, the world couldn’t get enough of him. Of course, we can’t blame them—who wouldn’t be swayed by a sparkly vampire who ended up winning over Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart)?
The acclaimed franchise didn’t just shoot Pattinson and his then-girlfriend Kristen Stewart to Hollywood stardom; it also cooked up the ‘Robsten’ phenomenon, serving up endless laughs and drama. Their off-screen drama was arguably as intense as their on-screen chemistry.

But while fans were busy swooning, Pattinson himself was far from starry-eyed about the cultural juggernaut. Since the franchise’s debut in 2008, the actor has been anything but a cheerleader for his vampiric alter ego, consistently expressing his distaste for both the role and the plotlines derived from Stephenie Meyer’s novels.

Planet of the Apes movies inspired a range of laughable rip-offs with painfully small budgets. Empire of the Apes is a substandard 2013 imitation with party store costumes and cringeworthy acting. Playmate of the Apes and Planet of the Erotic Ape are erotic parodies with creative character names.
Like any major film franchise, the Planet of the Apes movies have had their fair share of copycats, with several notable ripoffs coming and going over the years. The Planet of the Apes series began with Pierre Boulle's science fiction novel of the same name that was released in 1963, with the first famous film adaptation starring Charlton Heston coming out five years later. Throughout its long history, the Planet of the Apes movies have accumulated a number of blatant rip-offs of laughable quality.

After years of lying dormant, Scary Movie is coming back with the release of Scary Movie 6.
Known for its goofy satire and cameo-filled cast, the Scary Movie franchise brought together the worlds of R-rated comedy and spine-chilling horror films with five movies released between 2000 and 2013.
Leaning more on laughs than bloody kills, the Wayans Brothers-produced series of spoof movies spawned a whole wave of similar titles, spinning off with films like Vampires Suck, Superhero Movie, and The Starving Games.

Parody movies can surpass the genres they spoof, like Shaun of the Dead and Blazing Saddles. Filmmakers parody genres they love, creating great entries like Hot Fuzz and Scream. Some parodies, like Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, end up being better than the movies they mock.
Sometimes a parody movie is so good that it actually ends up being a stronger entry in the genre it spoofs than most straightforward entries in that genre. Shaun of the Dead is better than most zombie movies, Paul is better than most alien visitor movies, and Top Secret! is better than any of Elvis Presleys rock n roll musicals. Its common for parody movies to not even work as comedies, like Disaster Movie or Vampires Suck, but the very best are not only great comedies, but great movies.

Fun trivia: one of the working titles for Wes Craven's 1996 slasher satire "Scream" was "Scary Movie." Filmmaker Keenan Ivory Wayans got wind of this trivia, and decided in 2000 to make a film called "Scary Movie" intended to satirize the popularity of "Scream." The late 1990s were a curious time in popular culture, as there weren't too many dominant horror trends. Popular music was beginning to comment on its own self-awareness (see: "Flagpole Sitta") and irony became ironic. Self-reflection went from a healthy Socratic exercise into a loop of eternal recurrence. By 2000, we became so busy commenting on our own commentaries, that it was hard to see where we started. This is where "Scary Movie" dropped in.
Make no mistake, "Scary Movie" is unfunny, as are its many sequels. They're cheap, homophobic, and vulgar. Wayans took his model from spoof filmmakers like Zucker/Abrahams/Zucker, but aimed to make something...

"I've never given much thought to how I would die, but dying in the place of someone I love seems like a good way to go." Now that's how you start a franchise!
Since 2008, the "Twilight" films have been a cultural mainstay for better and for worse. A film so beloved that cosmetics companies are selling out of "Twilight"-inspired collections in under 10 minutes 15 years later, and so hated that it inspired the $20 million studio-produced parody film "Vampires Suck." Few multi-billion dollar franchises are quite this polarizing, and even fewer have had as powerful of a cultural reclamation years later. Love them or hate them, the "Twilight" films are one of the most important products of the late 2000s and 2010s, and no amount of whining about vampires sparkling or commenting "still a better love story than 'Twilight'" is going to change that.

Rotten Tomatoes assigns low scores to some of the worst directors in cinema, including Dennis Dugan and Michael Bay. Some directors, like Ed Wood and Uwe Boll, have cult followings despite consistently receiving negative ratings. M. Night Shyamalan has a mixed record with some critically acclaimed films and others that receive unanimous negative reception.
The review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes lives up to its name by assigning some truly Rotten scores to some of the worst directors in cinema, ranging from frequent Adam Sandler collaborator Dennis Dugan to blockbuster auteur Michael Bay. The website notably offers an aggregate score from both critics and audiences, leading to some differences between the two groups. Then, there are also times when both critics and audiences have equal Rotten Tomatoes ratings, sometimes even with a perfect score of 100%. But in the case of a Rob Zombie or M. One look at the headline of this feature will make some readers want to run and hide. That’s understandable. Not only did the Scary Movie saga get disastrous marks from critics and audiences alike, there have been lots of recent, pointless follow-ups needlessly trying to extend the shelf life of recognizable franchises. After a summer of Indiana Jones, the DC Extended Universe, Transformers, and Fast & Furious making underwhelming returns to the big screen, the dangers of reviving long-running franchises are more apparent than ever. In theory, the last thing the general public needs is for movie theaters to be occupied by screenings of a “legacy sequel” to the saga that helped inspire Vampires Suck and Meet the Spartans.

Ahead of the possible WGA strike, Lionsgate Television has announced their latest legacy revival project is coming in the form of a series adaptation of Stephenie Meyer's vampire love story, "Twilight." The late 2000s and early 2010s have apparently never been hotter, as "Twilight" joins the reboot ranks of the previously announced "Harry Potter" series adaptation, the new "The Lord of the Rings" films, and the soon-to-be-released "The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" prequel film. It admittedly feels a little unfair to lump in "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" with the other reboots, as "The Hunger Games" series has seen a resurgence in popularity and the film is adapting a new book, rather than rehashing what already exists.
As of publication, the "Twilight" series is without a writer or streaming home, but it'd be shocking if IP-hungry suits weren't currently trying to sink their fangs into the property.

The Twilight series has inspired many knock-off franchises such as Fallen, a movie about a girl falling in love with angels and demons, and Fifty Shades of Grey, which is based on Twilight fanfiction. We would like to be different—like the vampire we like. — Laurence A. Rickels, The Vampire Lectures1 Stephenie Meyer had never read about or seen a vampire—on-screen or in her heart—before.2 The first she encountered was in a dream, where one stood on a field with a girl by his side. In a gushing post on her website, the author divulges her vision: “[They] were discussing the difficulties inherent in the facts that A) they were falling in love with each other while B) the vampire was particularly attracted to the scent of her blood, and was having a difficult time restraining himself from killing her immediately.”3 The lovers’ discourse will later become chapter 13 of Twilight, a formative but forbidden romance novel adored among teens and a sizable number of adults, published in October of 2005. At the height of its popularity, my school library labeled the books with scarlet warning stickers of shame,...

Vampires have long-fascinated mainstream culture; as a result, they have inspired thousands of motion pictures across almost a century’s worth of cinema – to seriously mixed results.
The genre goes all the way back to the earliest days of cinema, while a revival in the late ’50 – courtesy of Britain’s own Hammer Horror studio – eventually drove the sub-genre towards oversaturation in the late ’80s. Nevertheless, due to tongue-in-cheek reinventions like Vampire’s Kiss and Fright Night, this lull was relatively short-lived.
Generally, vampire films remain somewhat divisive, mainly because they tend to differ so much in quality and often lapse into accidental parody. For every classic of the genre, there’s usually a dozen terrible releases: Vampires Suck, Dracula 2000 and Bloodrayne are all notably lacklustre efforts. In more recent years, the Twilight series has brought negative connotations to the vampire, but – as always – the genre survived the mauling.

Marlon Wayans’s El James cinema parody just isn’t funny
As if Scary Movie, Epic Movie, Vampires Suck et al weren’t bad enough, here comes another depressing “cinema parody” that isn’t half as amusing as the film(s) it wants us to laugh at. “How do we make this funny?” muses co-writer/star Marlon Wayans in the production notes. “The key was to im agine ‘What if Christian Grey were black?’” Cue jokes about wallet and car theft, fried chicken and Bill Cosby, alongside glasshouse/brick complaints about El James being a rubbish writer. When it all runs out of steam, the cock-and-ball routines downshift into riffs from Whiplash and Magic Mike, but sadly, these aren’t funny either.

It often makes you wonder about the tastes of modern audiences when horror comedies – a combination of the two most downright enjoyable genres in cinema – usually manage to both be a turn-off critics, and fail at the box office. If ever a genre had the potential for send-up, it’s the one that spawned the immortal classics Unfriended, Ouija and Annabelle.
Then again, it’s entirely possible that a modern crowd just doesn’t want to see horror being parodied. A decent horror comedy (or, failing that, Scary Movie 5) will make fun of all the genre conventions and spoof their weaknesses, and the people who’re itching to see another Friday the 13th eboot don’t want that.
Or maybe they watched A Haunted House and Vampires Suck and wrote off the idea that horror can be funny. It can, but you won’t find many laughs in those opportunistic would-be comedies,...

The title says it all.
When a movie is called Dude Bro Party Massacre III and there have not been two previous Dude Bro Party movies, you know one of two things: either you need to see this movie as soon as possible or it is not for you. It is the first movie from 5 Second Films (5Sf), a comedy site and collective of actors and filmmakers who have been posting short videos online since the mid-2000s but are finally branching out into features. It is gory and ridiculous and absolutely recommended for fans of '80s horror or absurdist comedy. It's even better if you're a fan of both.
The conceit of the film is that it's the second sequel to an '80s slasher called Dude Bro Party and that the only remaining copy left in the world exists because a kid taped it off of TV in the '80s,...

Kiwi spoofers put some bite back into a flagging sub-genre. And the problem with the submarine thriller form…
As sub-genres go, the vampire movie parody has had a remarkably low strike rate, perhaps because the films in the firing line have an inbuilt sense of camp that either resists irony or absorbs it. But over the mirthless corpses of Lesbian Vampire Killers, Dracula: Dead and Loving It and Vampires Suck, a genuinely funny attempt has risen: What We Do in the Shadows (Metrodome, 15), a cheap, chipper exercise in bloodsucker banter from New Zealand that also finds improbable life in the creatively dormant mockumentary format.
Such are the sharply silly comic skills of Flight of the Conchords goofball Jemaine Clement, who co-wrote and directed the film with Taika Waititi; the pair also play half of the film’s mismatched quartet of vampires, sharing digs in defiantly un-moody suburban Wellington. One’s geeky,...

Could it be possible that February – a month normally associated with cinematic duds and forgettables – brings one of 2015’s funniest movies in the form of a vampire mockumentary? When it’s created by one-half of the duo behind The Flight Of The Conchords (Jemaine Clement) and Taika Waititi, you damn well better believe it.
Coming together like the uproarious lovechild of Christopher Guest and Dario Argento, What We Do In The Shadows is another giant leap forward for a stunted vampire genre that now depends on out-of-the-box efforts to make people both love and fear bloodsucking demons once again. Airing more on the side of comedy, Clement and Waititi poke fun at numerous vampire generations in the same movie, from Nosferatu to Twilight, and they do so through a Big Brother-esque documentary that introduces audiences to a group of vampires just trying to survive in today’s crazy, monster-hating world.

Tagline: "A new killer, born of war, riding the wind." A hunting trip goes wrong in Russell Friedenberg's Wind Walkers. This film, which was shot in the Florida Everglades, brings an ancient Native American legend to the screen, in 2015. From director Russell Fridenberg and starring Glen Powell (April Apocalypse) and Zane Holtz (Vampires Suck), Wind Walkers are spirits, who can possess the living. These spirits come to life in the first trailer for the film, found here. For more on the story, this hunting party is under attack. Their lodge is robbed and destroyed. Then, one in their group disappears into the wilderness. More and more from the group disappear, until they return hungry for flesh. Now, the survivors must escape, or face an eternity of rot in the swamps. The first trailer for Wind Walkers is a compelling one. Full of action sequences and exterior shots, the trailer...

Filmmakers Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer, the duo behind critically reviled spoofs like "Date Movie," "Epic Movie," "The Starving Games," "Meet The Spartans" and "Vampires Suck," have setup their next project.
The pair will co-write and direct "Who The F#@k Took My Daughter," this spoof aiming mostly at the Liam Neeson-led "Taken" film series.
In the spoof, Ryan Miller is a tough, no nonsense, black leather jacket-wearing type whose daughter is kidnapped. He sets out to hunt down the abductors and rescue her. Peter Safran will produce.
The pair's previous films have grossed a total of $350 million in worldwide box office thus far, though their two most recent films - "The Starving Games" and "Best Night Ever" - were bombs which only made a few million each.

When it comes to movie monsters, there is no comparison. Dinner with a zombie would inevitably get messy. Frankenstein's Monster is a lousy conversationalist. Werewolves are boring three weeks out of every four.
But vampires? Now you're talking. Vampires are suave, stylish and sexy. Even when they turn on you, you get the benefit of eternal youth and an excuse to stay up all night, every night.
With Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston now playing hipster bloodsuckers in Jim Jarmusch's Only Lovers Left Alive, we look back at previous screen vampires to discover what makes them so cool.

The simplest way to become a vampire is to don fake teeth and fangs very much, I vant to suck your blood. Yet Max Schreck went much further, perfecting a chillingly inhuman look as Nosferatu with a bald head, rat's ears and long nails.

It’s almost hard to remember a time when the vampire genre was dead.
It was before Twilight, of course. Before the film version of Stephenie Meyer’s novel was released in 2008 to the sound of millions of squees, vampire movies were considered somewhat risky investments and TV networks rarely ordered shows starring the undead. Since the conclusion of The WB’s Angel in 2004, there was FX’s Blade: The Series (flop) and CBS’ Moonlight (flop). On the big screen, the genre’s popularity varied from films like Van Helsing and I Am Legend (hits) to Queen of the Damned...
