Troian Bellisario is opening up about her struggle with mental illness. In an essay for Lena Dunham’s Lenny Letter published on Tuesday, July 18, the Pretty Little Liars star, 31, is candid about her struggle and eating disorder.
"Here I am, 31 years old," the actress wrote while recalling a time she was swimming in freezing cold water. "And I'm still denying my body the one thing it is asking me to do: take care of it."
The CW star explained that her struggle was between her body wanting to be removed from the cold water, and her brain telling her to not be weak.
"There is a part of my brain that defies logic. Once, it completely convinced me I should live off 300 calories a day, and at some point, it told me even that was too much,...

Jordan Peele’s latest career incarnation could have been fodder for “Key & Peele,” the hit Comedy Central sketch show in which he and Keegan-Michael Key skewered modern racial issues. But Peele wrote had written a horror movie about race, and it needed a director. That created a challenge: After William Crain (“Blacula”), Bill Gunn (“Ganja & Hesse”), and Ernest Dickerson (“Bones,” “The Walking Dead”), how many black horror directors can you name? (The savviest genre fans out there might also remember James Bond III, very much a real person, who directed “Def By Temptation” 27 years ago.)
Needless to say, it was slim pickings. “I first pitched this as a movie no one would make,” Peele said. “About halfway through writing the script, I realized I was the only person who could direct it.”
However, Peele’s feature directing debut, “Get Out,” also brings him into the rarified class of horror directors...

To be fair, given the reputation Pascal Laugiers’ Martyrs has in the horror community, it was never going to be an easy task for Kevin and Michael Goetz to remake the film. Given that there are already a myriad of reviews out there comparing the two (detrimentally), I’m going to try something new and Not mention Laugiers’ original film too much… Though given how closely this remake follows the original movie, that could be difficult!

If he hasn't already, Leonardo DiCaprio can go ahead and clear some space on his mantle for the Oscar that's coming his way for "The Revenant." That's about the only lock for the awards show later this month, and the actor isn't wasting any time in setting the wheels in motion for his second nomination. Read More: Review: Alejandro G. Iñárritu's Fierce And Unremitting 'The Revenant' Starring Leonardo DiCaprio And Tom Hardy The actor has signed up to star in "Conquest," a new film that boasts a script from "The Revenant" co-writer Mark L. Smith. The screenwriter's previous credits aren't so hot ("Vacancy," the recent "Martyrs" remake), but "The Revenant" clearly marks him as a major talent, and DiCaprio's endorsement only seals the deal. Smith is also currently writing "Collider" for Edgar Wright which has been brewing for a few years now, and the blockbuster video game adaptation "Ghost.

Editor's Note: The modern concept of a film director is being the one person who guides a film with his or her vision, yet the current film landscape is filled with sibling directing pairs who we think of as a singular auteur: Lana and Andy Wachowski, Jen Soska and Sylvia Soska, Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, Joe and Anthony Russo, Bobby and Peter Farrelly, Paolo and Vittorio Taviani, David and Jerry Zucker, Mark and Jay Duplass, Paul and Chris Weitz, Albert and Allen Hughes and, of course, Joel and Ethan Coen. So what is it about the sibling bond that has resulted in so many successful directing teams? We asked the The Goetz Brothers — award-winning directors of hundreds of commercials, two feature films ("Scenic Route" and "Martyrs") and who are managed by the sharp talent eyes at Anonymous Content — to tell us about their working relationship and how it started. I have not been a champion of the Martyrs remake. I just didn't see the point of remaking a great movie for the simple sake of making it more palpable for American audiences and the trailer didn't change my mind but when the opportunity arose to chat with the directors of the re-make, I jumped at the chance.
I would likely have skipped the entire affair if I didn't already know and like the work of Kevin and Michael Goetz. Their first feature film Scenic Route (trailer) was a really well made indie thriller that showcased the directors' ability to tell a great sto [Continued ...]...

Troian Bellisario, best known for her role as snarky/brilliant Spencer Hastings on "Pretty Little Liars," is taking her experience with scary to the next level with her new movie "Martrys."

Screenwriters, like actors and directors alike, can sometimes be "typecast," pegged to stay within one genre or to tell one type of story. On paper, writer Mark L. Smith would appear to be strictly a horror writer, having written the scripts for Seance (which he also directed), Vacancy and The Hole, along with an upcoming Martyrs remake, which is set for release on January 22, 2016. When you see The Revenant, opening in limited release Christmas Day before expanding January 8, you'll quickly learn that this writer can do so much more than just horror.
The Revenant (read my full review) went through several different iterations in development before finally hitting the silver screen. The project is based on Michael Punke's novel, which itself is loosely based on the true story of Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio), a legendary frontiersman who somehow managed to survive a brutal grizzly bear attack, and get revenge...

"The truth can only be seen through their eyes." Anchorbay has debuted the first creepy trailer for the new Us remake of the French horror thriller Martyrs, which broke out and became a cult hit back in late 2008 after first premiering at festivals. This new version stars Troian Bellisario, Bailey Noble, Kate Burton and Toby Huss. This is about two friends who find themselves "trapped in a nightmare" as grown ups after being traumatized at an orphanage while young. This looks like it's much more of a psychological thriller with some horrific moments, and also exactly what I would expect for a remake. Just doesn't look that good. Here's the first trailer for Kevin & Michael Goetz's Martyrs, direct from Anchorbay's YouTube: Synopsis: Ten-year-old Lucie flees from the isolated warehouse where she has been held prisoner. Deeply traumatized, she is plagued by awful night terrors at the orphanage that takes her in.

We recently saw a new batch of stills for the upcoming Martyrs remake and with the movie due for release early next year, it was only a matter of time before a trailer was finaly released.
We've been cautiously optimistic about the movie. Sure, it's a remake of a horror classic but it's not without its merits going in; namely, the new version is written by Mark L. Smith (best known for Vacancy and The Hole, two solid horror movies not to mention co-writing The Revenant (review)) and directed by Kevin and Michael Goetz (of Scenic Route fame). Fench director Xavier Gens is currently shooting The Crucifixion, a supernatural thriller written by Chad Hayes whose past credits include The Conjuring, House of Wax and Whiteout among others. The film is being produced by Peter Safran whose credits include some pretty stellar thrillers like Buried and the upcoming Martyrs remake.
The Crucifixion sounds intriguing in its story. Rather than a straight forward story of exorcism, it seems to revolve around a journalist and a priest who is facing murder charges in the wake of an exorcism gone wrong.
We've got the first look at the film including some stunning photography as well as a test shot of a terrifying figure that's being refereed to on set as the "Faceless man".

Game On: Stamm’s Latest a B-Grade But Fun Genre Flick
Director Daniel Stamm leaves behind the found footage genre for his third outing as director with 13 Sins, a remake of a 2006 Thai film. While Stamm’s follow-up to his surprisingly well made 2010 film The Last Exorcist was originally slated to be an English language remake of the French juggernaut of torture porn, Martyrs (2008), it is perhaps a stroke of luck to see him working with less controversial material this time around as it gives Stamm a chance to flex his skills with darkly humorous genre. Playing like a blend of Saw meets The Most Dangerous Game in the confines of “The Twilight Zone,” there’s a lot of fun to be had with this blatant metaphor for the capacity (or is it necessity?) of violence in the face of overcoming the trap of economic systems and realities, even though...

Martyrs is an intense French film about the physical and psychological hell some people endure, and the revelations that can come from such trauma. It's a highly singular, inspired, ultraviolent film and horror fans everywhere love it, so of course Hollywood wanted a remake. Hot on the heels of The Last Exorcism in 2010, director Daniel Stamm ended up landing the highly coveted gig. Unfortunately for fans of Stamm's work, the movie never happened, but we couldn't help but ask him about it when speaking to him about his newest movie, 13 Sins (which is currently on VOD with a theatrical release coming on April 18, 2014). As it turns out, studios had been sending Stamm tons of generic, torture-heavy scripts after Last Exorcism, which he didn't want...

With French filmmakers continuing to serve up some of the most extreme, high concept horror fare in recent memory, it seems all their English language speaking counterparts continue to do is offer low budget cheapie fright flicks or remakes. And true to form, here comes another.
Snd Films has announced that "Livid," the latest from "Inside" directors Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo, is getting primed for a remake, with David Birke ("Gacy," "Dahmer") to adapt. The film, which opened last fall in its native France, has been doing the festival circuit for much of the last year. Described as a "fairytale horror" film, the story centers on a young woman and her friends who break into an old mansion and unleash some dark and spooky stuff in the process.

An American Psycho remake may be written and directed by Noble Jones. Remaking American Psycho is dangerous ground to tread on. The first adaptation was a supplement to the book of the same name written by Bret Easton Ellis, a visual of some of the written material. It was never a very good adaptation in my opinion (an adequate one though e.g. Patrick knowing the designers of people’s clothing) nor could any adaptation capture: a.) The obsessive compulsive nature of Patrick Bateman and b.) the vicious and highly descriptive killings in the book.
I will admit I had no idea how Patrick Bateman sounded until I saw the 2000 film. That was good. Now it seems Lionsgate wants another stab (I had to) at the source material.

The Last Excorcism was one of 2010's most underrated fright films, so fans have been eagerly awaiting director Daniel Stamm's next project. Stamm had been linked to the Martyrs remake, but now official word is out that he'll tackle another remake -- the Thai thriller 13: Game of Death. More after the jump. The Hollywood Reporter has announced that Stamm "is currently working with writing partner David Birke to adapt the screenplay, and that they hope to go into production early next year." "A cult favorite, the original Game of Death is a macarbre satire of media culture that follows a financially strapped salesman who receives an anonymous phone call informing him he's on a...

Director Daniel Stamm has been tapped to helm the English-language remake of the Thai horror-thriller 13: Game of Death. The original film tells the story of a financially strapped salesman who receives a phone call informing him that he’s on a hidden camera game show and must complete 13 tasks in order to receive a multi-million dollar prize. The horror kicks in when the tasks become increasingly extreme, leading the protagonist down a path of no return. THR reports that Stamm is currently working on the screenplay with David Birke, and they hope to go into production early next year. The director is no stranger to the horror genre, as he previously helmed the documentary-style flick The Last Exorcism. We reported last year that he was also attached to a remake of the French cult horror film Martyrs, but there’s no word on whether that film is still in development or not.

The U.S. saw the Thai film 13: Game of Death hit DVD in 2008. And around that time, there was talk of an American remake. I thought it was dead. Deadline says it is, indeed, alive and well and Daniel Stamm of The Last Exorcism is directing. He is writing the script with David Burke. In the original film, a down-on-his luck salesman has lost his job, his car and his girlfriend. When a mysterious cell phone caller offers him $100 million to play a "game show" featuring 13 secret challenges, he is in. The catch? The tests grow increasingly intense and morally questionable, but if he quits he loses everything. Daniel Stamm is a busy boy, however, and I have no clue where this fits on his schedule. He's supposed to remake Martyrs and direct Reincarnate for...

In the Us version of The Descent, our heroine Sarah escapes from the cave of hell. The UK version however depicted a much darker ending, one that did not provide a happy ending for Sarah. We hear stories like this time and time again of films that were screened for test audiences that did not do well simply because the endings were too bleak. People hate being sad and upset after seeing a film. So much so that incredible, groundbreaking movies, sacrifice their original intent and stories to please the audience's mood. In a country where something like 27 million of its residents are on anti-depressants, America is certainly a glass half full kind of place.
In more recent news however, the director of the American remake of Martyrs, Daniel Stamm (The Last Exorcism) has said that his version of the acclaimed French horror film will not make us want to shoot ourselves,...

Daniel Stamm, director of The Last Exorcism, has been hired for the English-remake of Martyrs, a violent French horror film about two tortured women.
Twilight producer Wyck Godfrey is overseeing the project, which sparked very early speculation that Kristen Stewart was being sought for one of the leads. Of course, it’s not true and Stamm laughed off the rumor in his interview with the La Times. Mark L Smith (Vacancy) wrote the new script.
The bloody original centers on Lucie, a woman who survived a brutal series of torture sessions but managed to escape. Lucie resurfaces as an adult and enacts revenge on the seemingly ordinary family who imprisoned her, along with the help of Anna, a girl she met at an orphanage as a child. A plot twist reveals a secret cult interested in discovering the secrets of the afterlife… by any means necessary.

The La Times is reporting that the producers of Martyrs have nabbed director Daniel Stamm (The Last Exorcism) to rework the popular French torture film for an American audience. Martyrs tells the story of two abused orphan girls, Lucie and Anna, who meet and become friends. Fifteen years after she was kidnapped and subjected to prolonged torture, a mentally unstable Lucie seeks revenge on tormentors and pulls Anna along with her into a world of delusions, abuse and madness. Back in June, "Twilight" producer Wyck Godfrey revealed that he wants "Twilight" star Kristen Stewart to star in the upcoming Platinum Dunes remake of the French horror film "Martyrs," which is being written by Mark Smith (Vacancy, The Hole in 3D). I (Alex) had the chance to catch up with Stewart during the press conference for "Welcome to the Rileys" and asked if Godfrey had spoken to her about the movie. "No," she replied, adding that she has never heard of "Martyrs." When I asked if she would want to star in a horror film, Stewart gave an enthusiastic "Yeah!" The original "Martyrs" shocked audiences for its unrelenting violent nature. It revolves around a young woman's quest for revenge against the people who kidnapped and tormented her as a child. That leads her and a friend, who is also a victim of child abuse, on a terrifying journey into a living hell of depravity.

You may have noticed a recent news item here on the site. Wyck Godfrey (producer of the abortion fest that is Twilight) is planning to remake the film Martyrs. I won’t say too much about it except that Will and myself, your loyal scribes, have come out strongly against said remake. You can see our comments here.
This news clearly got my blood boiling, and I’ve decided to use this Hump-Day Threesome to get y’all to watch the original film, so you’ll know what’s being corrupted. And while you’re at, you might as well check out these other two stellar films as well.
For those of you who may not know, all three of these films fit into the category called New French Extremism—a certain school of French-language films that… shall we say, go there? (Ten bonus dork points to the person who places that reference.

FEARnet caught up with Twilight producer Wyck Godfrey for The Twilight Saga: Eclipse and took the opportunity to ask him about the American remake of Martyrs he’s also producing. The controversial and violent French revenge thriller from 2008 centers around two girls who find friendship through their abuse-filled, tormented pasts.

The French film Martyrs is one of the few movies that I regret seeing. Not because it's bad... it's actually not. It's actually quite good, though that seems an insufficient descriptor. No, it's a different kind of awful. It's a devastatingly harsh picture filled with torture, brutality, and violence, all wrapped within a bizarre, pseudo-religious philosophy. I won't get into the plot too deeply, for fear of spoiling it for those who still want to see it, but suffice it to say it's a unique and deeply disturbing film.
It's also a film that I would have thought to be unremakeable (note: not a real word). Silly me. Apparently, producer Wyck Godfrey is interested in remaking it, for inexplicable reasons (he's even conceded that the film is "not remake-able in its form for an American audience"). Hell, it's not remake-able for any audience. It would be like remaking Audition or Calvaire or Antichrist.

There is sure to be a contingent of horror fans upset at this proposal, but I doubt it will be as large as the contingent of people who just hate Twilight that are equally peeved. Wyck Godfrey, a producer of the teen vampire saga, told FearNet he'd like to see his Bella Swan in the remake of the French-Canadian film Martyrs.
A lot of Twilight bashers dislike Kristen Stewart for no tangible reason, really. She was good in Into the Wild and even before that, and the craziness that the vampire saga has started certainly isn't her fault. She isn't terribly good in the movies, but she doesn't have much to do. Still, they won't want to see her land any role at all, much less a remake of a much-talked-about horror movie they've never seen.
Martyrs never opened in the Us and didn't do much business on DVD, either,...

Well, we here at Fused Film’s Unhinged take our horror seriously—especially our French New Extremism. Your cerebral, blood-loving scribes, Melissa and Will, contend that France is producing the best in contemporary horror.
Upon hearing this news we both shuddered. This cannot and should not happen. So we decided to say a little bit about this wretched news. Enjoy.
Will’s Thoughts
I’m not going to say a lot, because I know Melissa is going to sufficiently thrash this news and I’m ninety-nine percent certain that I will agree with everything she says.
So let me just say that even without subtitles mainstream American audiences did not get this film. It’s contemplative, philosophical, and symbolic, i.e. everything the normal movie-going American hates.

Wyck Godfrey has presumably bought himself several very nice houses by producing the Twilight films, but a good producer always has his eye on what the next big thing will be. Godfrey has picked up the remake rights to the 2009 French-Canadian horror film Martyrs, and sticking close to the money tree, told Fearnet he knows who he wants as a star: "I would love for Kristen [Stewart] to do it." Fearnet doesn't explain if they prompted that question out of him-- "Hey, wouldn't Kristen Stewart be great for this part?"-- or if he volunteered the information on his own, so there's no way to tell how serious he might be about casting her. She'd probably suit the role, though-- the film is about a teenage girl seeking revenge against the people who tortured her as a child, teaming up with a friend from the orphanage on her mission. Stewart ...

Cue a whole lot of irritated groans. A couple weeks back we updated on the remake of the extreme French horror film Martyrs, basically noting that (a) Mark L. Smith had penned a script and (b) the remake sounds, on the surface, like a terrible idea. What I didn't note at the time is that Twilight producer Wyck Godfrey is one of the producers. This weekend, while doing junket press for The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, Godfrey said a couple of things about Martyrs. The headline getting statement: he'd love to have Kristen Stewart star. Fear.net talked to the producer, who said "I would love for Kristen to do it." But take into consideration that Fear.net doesn't provide any context for that statement. We don't know if the site asked, "would you hire any Twilight actors?" or if the question was "who do you have in mind for the cast?...

It was reported a while ago that the French horror film, Martyrs would be getting a Us remake. Now, thanks the The Playlist we get news that the producer of the remake, Wyck Godfrey (Twilight, Dear John) is hoping Kristen Stewart (Twilight, The Runaways) will star in the film.
For those not familiar with the title, Martyrs is an extremely bloody and violent French horror film that follows much in the same vein as other French horror films like Inside, High Tension and Frontiers. I have seen the French version of Martyrs and while I didn’t think it was that great it was certainly extremely bloody and violent, emphasis on the extremely.
Somehow I can’t see this film going over well with American audiences and the film would certainley need a big actress like Stewart to help reel them in. I can easily see the remake being far...

We all know that whenever there’s a successful foreign language film that Hollywood will be looking to remake it – and last years French-Canadian horror film Martyrs is no different…
It’s long been known that the film had been tapped for a remake, Bloody Disgusting last reported that scribe Mark L. Smith has penned a draft of the script for Wyck Godfrey’s Temple Hill Entertainment. But the latest new from producer Godfrey sounds quite worrying. He has announced, in an interview with FearNet, that his ideal leading woman would be Twilight’s Kirsten Stewart(!):
I would love for Kristen to do it… We’re doing it for an American audience with an American cast, the script we’ve written for it is awesome.

Well, this is turning out as bad as could be expected.
Back in May word came out that Twilight producer Wyck Godfrey was prepping a Us remake of uber-extreme French horror flick Martyrs. That was enough to get the eyes rolling but it gets worse ...
In an interview published today at FearNet, Godfrey states openly that he considers Martyrs "not remake-able in its form for an American audience". But he's doing it anyway. Which will mean, no doubt, a significant change of 'form'. How significant? Well, he goes on to say that he'd "love" to cast Twilight star Kristen Stewart in the lead, if that's any indication. Yech.

Martyrs is one of the most violent, sadistic and well written hororr films I have ever seen. So much so it made my Top 10 Horror Films of 2009 list. We have known for awhile that Hollywood is planning a remake but it seems they are interested in a certain Twilight star to helm the project. Namely Kristen Stewart. Fearnet reports that the producer Wyck Godfrey is keen to have Kristen star.
Martyrs is extremely disturbing and I sure hope that the teens who are fans of hers from Twilight dont think they are getting more 'tween magic'. That said I also hope the producers dont tone down and ruin Martyrs to accomadate Kristen Stewarts Fans. Good choice in casting or bad? You tell me.
I saw Martyrs after it was recommended to me as being one of the most interesting and though provoking films to ever come out of the foreign film market.
