More than 60 years after shows like The Rifleman and Gunsmoke aired on television, westerns and neo-westerns are once again popular amongst audiences. But, with so many options now available on TV and online, it may be difficult to choose which series to watch.

Today’s best westerns (not to be confused with the hotel chain) capture the feel of early entries in the genre while staying relevant by incorporating modern dialogue and sociopolitical topics. This has allowed the genre to reach a wider variety of viewers than it might have otherwise done in the 1950s and ‘60s.

Wynonna Earp Brings Supernatural Elements to the Western Genre 2016-2021, Streaming on Netflix

Far from taking a traditional western approach, Wynonna Earp focuses on a descendant of lawman Wyatt Earp as she faces supernatural foes in her hometown of Purgatory. Another key character is the notorious Doc Holliday, who is played by Schitt’s Creek alum Tim Rozon.

A criminally underrated Western series is raising hell on free streaming as it forges a path up the ranks and into the top 10. Beginning more than a decade ago in 2011, Hell on Wheels transports audiences all the way back to 1865 and follows a former Confederate soldier who, while tackling demons in his war-torn past, plans a mission of revenge amid the emerging Union Pacific's construction of the first transcontinental railroad.

Created and produced by Joe and Tony Gayton, Hell on Wheels was initially broadcast on AMC, and ran for five seasons. Led by Anson Mount as Cullen Bohannon, the rest of the cast includes Colm Meaney (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine), Common (John Wick: Chapter 2), and Dominique McElligott (The Boys).

Hell on Wheels did find a small cult following at the time, but now that the series is available to stream on Freevee, the show has reached heights of #9 in the top 10 so far.

AMC‘s popular neo-Western noir thriller “Dark Winds” has been off the air for well over a year. Fortunately, the series, which is based on author Tony Hillerman’s “Leaphorn & Chee” novels, is finally set to return from its extended hiatus this week. “Dark Winds” Season 3 will be the show’s longest to date, consisting of eight episodes this time rather than six, and it promises to take the series into darker and more surreal places than ever before.

In advance of the series’ upcoming Season 3 premiere, AMC Networks announced today that it has renewed the critically acclaimed and popular noir drama Dark Winds for a fourth season. The expanded, eight-episode, third season premieres March 9 on AMC and AMC+.

Season 4 of Dark Winds, which will begin filming in Santa Fe, New Mexico in March, will also consist of eight, hour-long episodes. The new season will also see the directorial debut of series’ star and executive producer, Zahn McClarnon, and will debut exclusively on AMC and AMC+ in 2026.

“When we greenlit the first season of Dark Winds, we saw the potential for an authentic and long-running franchise that could live alongside the worlds we were building around The Walking Dead and Anne Rice,” said Dan McDermott, president of entertainment and AMC Studios for AMC Networks.

“That is exactly what this cast and creative team delivered, and the fans have responded.

AMC Networks’ acclaimed period drama Dark Winds has been renewed for a fourth season, nearly two weeks ahead of its Season 3 premiere on Sunday, March 9 (on AMC and AMC+).

The eight-episode Season 4 — which is set to begin filming this March in Santa Fe, New Mexico, with an eye on a 2026 release — will mark the directorial debut of series star and executive producer Zahn McClarnon.

Meaney, arguably best known for portraying transporter chief Miles O’Brien in Star Trek: The Next Generation and later the senior engineer on all seven seasons of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, will be honored with the Irish Film and Television Academy (IFTA) award for lifetime achievement.

“To say I was surprised when I got the news that IFTA wanted to give me this award, would be an understatement. I was truly shocked,” said Meaney, per Variety. “To be asked to join this long list of very illustrious previous recipients is a huge honour, and I’m thrilled and looking forward to a good night in Dublin,” added the actor. Meaney is set to receive the Lifetime Achievement award at the IFTA awards on Feb.

Tonight on “Hell’s Kitchen!” The chefs are feeling the heat. The upcoming Netflix limited drama series “The Beast in Me” has added four new cast members, Variety has learned.

Liam Neeson's upcoming film Absolution continues a trend that started nearly two decades ago in one of his most iconic films. Neeson, who turned 72 in 2024, is keeping up his momentum as one of the best leading actors in action movies working in Hollywood today with 2024's Absolution. Many of Neeson's best action films are essentially one-person army tales that portray the talented actor's physical tour-de-force performances. Absolution appears to fit right in that category.

The trailer of Absolution stars Neeson as an aging gangster trying to escape his dark past. The film, directed by Hans Peter Moland and written by Tony Gayton, also stars Ron Perlman, Frankie Shaw, and Daniel Diemer. Neeson, an Academy Award nominee for 1993's Schindler's List, has nearly 200 television and movie acting credits to his name after making his feature film debut in 1978's Pligrim's Progress.

Absolution will be released on November 1, 2024.

Peacock is developing The Thing About Tommy, from writer Bruce Marshall Romans and the companies behind the 2022 NBC limited series The Thing About Pam, NBC News Studios and Blumhouse, sources tell Deadline. UCP, a division of Universal Studio Group, is the studio.

The Thing About Tommy is inspired by the true story of Thomas Randolph, nicknamed “Black Widower,” who has been married six times and four of those wives ended up dead.

Like The Thing About Pam, which chronicled Pam Hupp’s involvement in the 2011 murder of Betsy Faria, The Thing About Tommy stems from Dateline’s coverage of the case. (The venerable NBC newsmagazine profiled Randolph in the multi-part series The Widower.)

The acclaimed Neo-noir thriller series enjoyed 100% Rotten Tomatoes scores for both seasons. Setting its scene in the Navajo Nation in Arizona in the 1970s, Dark Winds takes viewers down a path of both crime-solving and spiritual healing. Hulu subscribers will have a chance to check out an underappreciated Western series this month. On Sept. 15, the streaming platform will add all five seasons of Hell on Wheels.

Created by Joe Gayton and Tony Gayton, Hell on Wheels originally ran for fives seasons on AMC between 2011 and 2016. Its reviews were largely positive with the fifth and final season garnering especially strong acclaim with a perfect score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite sticking the landing, the series doesn't seem to have garnered the attention it deserved in recent years, though its fan base continues to grow as more people discover the show.

Renée Zellweger is attached to star in a series adaptation of the novel “12 Months to Live” that is currently in development at Max, Variety has learned.

The project is currently titled “Jane Smith,” named after the novel’s main character, whom Zellweger will play. The book was written by James Patterson and Mike Lupica, with Miki Johnson set to adapt it for the screen and serve as showrunner. The novel was originally published in September 2023, with the second novel in the series, “Hard to Kill,” due out on July 29.
