Awards-watchers are accustomed to waiting for the end of every awards show to see the big film categories handed out, but Saturday’s Writers Guild Awards threw everybody for a loop by making the film awards the first two categories of the night in simultaneous ceremonies in Los Angeles and New York.

“Nickel Boys” won the first award of the night, for Best Adapted Screenplay, and “Anora” won the second, for Best Original Screenplay. The awards led off the shows because the BAFTA Awards are taking place in London on Sunday, with the categories’ early placement giving “Nickel Boys” writers RaMell Ross and Joslyn Barnes and “Anora” writer Sean Baker more time to get to London.

The Academy today reversed its earlier decision declaring the film ineligible on the basis of not meeting qualification criteria. As of this morning, the documentary directed by Nenad Cicin-Sain appears in the Academy Screening Room, allowing documentary branch members to consider it for Best Documentary Feature.

“I’m very happy to learn from the Academy that they changed their decision,” Cicin-Sain told Deadline exclusively. His documentary centers on the siege of Sarajevo in the 1990s and how beleaguered residents of the city drew inspiration from the music of U2 as they attempted to survive years of war, sniper attacks and deprivation.

“There were so many people who shared their personal traumas and joys in the telling of this story,” Cicin-Sain said, responding to the Academy’s decision today.

Paramount+ today announced that the critically acclaimed documentary Kiss the Future, which made its world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival and opened the Tribeca Festival in 2023, will premiere exclusively on the service in the U.S. and Canada on May 7. The documentary features interviews with Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, Christine Amanpour, Bill Clinton, and more.

Produced by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon for Artists Equity and Sarah Anthony, Kiss the Future was directed by Nenad Cicin-Sain and written by Bill S. Carter and Cicin-Sain. It is based on Carter’s memoir Fools Rush In.

The film tells a story of defiance amid the 1990s siege of Sarajevo during the Bosnian War, focusing on a vibrant, underground community that used art and music to affect change; a community that garnered global attention by ultimately inspiring an American aid worker to reach out to the band U2 to help raise awareness of the devastating conflict.

“The Accountant 2” with Ben Affleck is moving forward, with Amazon MGM now picking up the sequel rights to the action film from Warner Bros. and Affleck’s production company Artists Equity. Affleck and director Gavin O’Connor are set to return, IndieWire has confirmed.

Amazon MGM will be planning to release “The Accountant 2” as a streaming exclusive through its Prime Video; it likely would have been a theatrical play if released through Warner Bros. The original film from 2016 earned $155 million worldwide at the box office and was also the most-rented digital film of 2017.

Following the release of “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” and “Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé,” AMC Theatres, the world’s biggest cinema chain, is releasing Nenad Cicin-Sain’s documentary “Kiss the Future” on Feb. 23.

The exclusive run of the 102-minute docu, which premiered in February 2023 at the Berlin Film Festival, is a major feat for the film, which chronicles the 1990s siege of Sarajevo during the Bosnian War. Although the film features an awe inspiring U2 performance during a 1997 post-war concert celebrating the city’s hard-fought triumph over ethnic nationalism, “Kiss the Future” is not a shiny, shimmering, bombastic pop doc. Instead it’s a docu that chronicles the breakup of Yugoslavia and the onset of war in Bosnia. In the film citizens struggle to survive the siege of Sarajevo and ultimately turn to rock and punk music for inspiration and distraction from the daily nightmare of Serbian shells and snipers.

Thankfully AMC has stepped up and is giving it a proper nationwide release in AMC cinemas later in February. Pope Francis, Hillary Rodham Clinton and former Un chief Ban Ki-Moon will be honored at the upcoming Cinema for Peace gala in Berlin on February 19.

The long-running gala run by the Cinema for Peace Foundation will be accompanied by the inaugural World Forum on the Future Of Democracy, Tech and Humankind.

The latter event will run from February 18 to 19 at the Allianz Forum next to the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin with the aim of promoting the renewal of democracy and freedom at a time when both are under threat.

The Cinema for Peace Foundation was created in 2008 as an international non-profit organization with the goal to foster change through film. Over the years it has worked with a host of stars including Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio and George Clooney.

Clinton and Ban will attend the February 19 gala in person while Pope Francis will be shown receiving his award in a recorded video.

Exclusive: Cillian Murphy, fresh off of the massive global success of Oppenheimer — and as he gets ready to debut Small Things Like These (in which he stars and he produced) as the opening-night gala of the Berlin Film Festival next week — has set his next starring and producing gig with Steve.

AMC Theatres is continuing its foray into the distribution business following Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour and Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé.

The world’s largest cinema circuit revealed Wednesday it has pacted with Fifth Season to release the Matt Damon and Ben Affleck-produced documentary Kiss the Future in the U.S. The acclaimed film chronicles the vibrant underground music scene during the Siege of Sarajevo and U2’s involvement, culminating with the band’s 1997 concert there.

Unlike the Beyoncé and Swift concert films, Kiss the Future will play exclusively in select AMC locations. The film, which will receive a full theatrical run beginning Feb. 23, will stream later this year on Paramount+

For his fifth and final edition, outgoing Berlin Film Festival artistic director Carlo Chatrian has assembled a promising lineup, rich in prestige, star-driven titles as well as more eclectic films containing the political elements intrinsic to the fest’s DNA.

“I am very happy and proud of this year’s lineup,” Chatrian tells Variety. “I think it achieved the balance between highly anticipated titles by filmmakers who are relevant in cinema history and, as always, films that you don’t expect to find in competition. At the same time I know that expectations can be a double-edged sword.”

The 74th annual Berlinale, held Feb. 15-25, will feature such films as “La Cocina” with Rooney Mara; sci-fi drama “Another End” with Gael García Bernal and Renate Reinsve; and the historical drama “Small Things Like These” starring “Oppenheimer’s” Cillian Murphy.

The 23rd edition of the New York City-based festival, presented by Okx, is set to take place June 5 through 16 next year, with programming ranging from film, TV, immersive, games, audio storytelling, talks, and more.
