The stars of big streaming hits Rivals and Baby Reindeer have scooped gongs at this year’s Broadcasting Press Guild (Bpg) Awards.

Danny Dyer, previously better known for soaps and soccer movies, won Best Actor for his role as Freddie Jones in Disney+’s Jilly Cooper adaptation Rivals, beating off competition from big stars Lennie James (Mr Loverman), Toby Jones (Mr Bates vs the Post Office), Eddie Redmayne (Day of the Jackal) and Mark Rylance (Wolf Hall). Gints Zilbalodis’ “Flow,” the dialogue-free survival tale of a solitary cat’s journey that won both the Oscar and Golden Globe for best animated feature earlier this year, has been embraced by moviegoers around the world.

Budgeted at $3.4 million and sold internationally by Charades, “Flow” has grossed, as of March 17, more than $36 million worldwide. This includes $4.6 million (€4.5 million) in North America, where it opened in November and was released by Sideshow and Janus Films. Cracking news: Wallace & Gromit are returning to UK cinemas with a release of Wallace & Gromit: Curse Of The Were-Rabbit.

The triumphant return of Wallace & Gromit to screens at the end of last year culminated in the sublime Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl, comfortably one of the best films of 2024. Directed by Nick Park and Merlin Crossingham, and produced by the wonderful team at Aardman, I can’t be alone in having already watched it multiple times. I intend to watch it many times more.

The film only got a brief cinema release in the UK before heading to BBC One and BBC iPlayer, but two decades ago, the terrific Wallace & Gromit: Curse Of The Were-Rabbit got a full big screen outing. And, this April, it’s getting a fresh outing on the big screen to mark its birthday.

Wicked and Emilia Perez were named the best edited feature films of 2024 at the 75th Annual Ace Eddie Awards. Winners were announced on March 14, 2025 during a ceremony that was originally scheduled for January 18th. The devastating Los Angeles wildfires forced the delay, and the American Cinema Editors opted for a less formal ceremony that helped raise money for wildfire relief.

On the television side, awards season favorite Shogun, What We Do in the Shadows, and Frasier took home awards. Both What We Do in the Shadows and Frasier earned Ace Eddie Awards for their final seasons, while Shogun is set to return for a second season.

The American Cinema Editors (Ace) has announced its winners for the 2025 Ace Eddie Awards, which recognizes “outstanding editing in 14 categories of film, television and documentaries.”

Emilia Pérez and Wicked won in the feature film categories, while The Wild Robot and Will & Harper won best animated feature and documentary feature, respectively. What We Do in the Shadows, Shogun and Baby Reindeer won in the TV categories, among others.

The 75th annual ceremony celebrating the best editing of the year was originally set to take place on Jan. 18 before it was postponed due to the L.A. wildfires.

At the event, Wicked filmmaker Jon M. Chu received the Ace Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year Award; and film editors Maysie Hoy and Paul Hirsch received career achievement awards. Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine as Light took top honors at the 2025 International Cinephile Society (Ics) Awards, winning best picture, director, and ensemble. The film, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and won the Grand Prix, has continued to receive recognition, earning nominations at the Golden Globes and BAFTAs.

The Ics recognized Kapadia’s film for its portrayal of “the voices, the faces, the night-lit trains of modern India.” The story follows women from different generations who form a quiet bond as they navigate personal and cultural challenges.

Nickel Boys, RaMell Ross’s Oscar-nominated drama about Black teenagers trapped in an abusive reform school, won best adapted screenplay for Ross and Joslyn Barnes, who based the script on Colson Whitehead’s novel. The film also received the cinematography award for Jomo Fray’s work.

Payal Kapadia’s “All We Imagine as Light” triumphed at the 2025 International Cinephile Society (Ics) Awards, winning best picture, director and ensemble.

“All We Imagine as Light” world premiered at the Cannes Film Festival where it won the grand prize of the festival, along with a flurry of international awards. It also went on earn nominations at the Golden Globes and the BAFTA’s, among others.

The International Cinephile Society praised Kapadia’s film for highlighting “the voices, the faces, the night-lit trains of vibrant modern India.” The film revolves around a trip of women from different generations who form a quiet sisterhood to find their own peace amidst daunting personal and cultural issues.

“Nickel Boys,” RaMell Ross’s Oscar-nominated drama about Black teenagers caged in an abusive reform school, took best adapted screenplay honors for Ross and Joslyn Barnes, who wrote the script based on the book by Colson Whitehead.

As Conan O’Brien joked during the Oscars, after Latvian film “Flow” won the Best Animated Feature — beating out Pixar’s “Inside Out 2,” DreamWorks’ “The Wild Robot” and Aardman’s “Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl” — the “ball’s in your court, Estonia.”

Mikey Madison was already starting to get a lot of attention thanks to her lead performance in Sean Baker's Anora, but Sunday's surprise Best Actress Oscar win is certain to make the 25-year-old a highly in-demand star in Hollywood.

Major studios are sure to have reached out already, and we're now hearing that Madison could be in line to play a character in an upcoming Marvel Studios project.

We don't have much to go on, but scooper Daniel Richtman is reporting that Madison is "being considered" for an MCU role.

It's always worth keeping in mind that Marvel Studios meets with and reaches out to a lot of talent (it might be quicker to list the people that haven't been up for a part at one point or another), so this is far from a guarantee that Madison is even in talks with the studio.

The Academy Awards took place yesterday evening and, as per usual, the results have split opinions. Anora was the surprise Best Picture winner, with Wicked and Conclave failing to keep the momentum going following other recent award ceremonies.

Conan O'Brien hosted this year's and his performance of "I Won't Waste Time" was accompanied by surprise appearances from Dune: Part Two's Sandworm and Deadpool & Wolverine's Dancepool.

We don't know who was in the suit, though the Merc with the Mouth - who O'Brien reminded us wasn't among the nominees - pulled off some familiar Backstreet Boys-inspired dance moves before making his exit.

Ryan Reynolds initially embarked on a pretty robust "FYC" campaign for Deadpool & Wolverine, though it quickly lost momentum. The movie, which was a box office hit, wasn't exactly considered a critical darling with 78% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Flow, an animated feature from Latvia, won Best Animated Feature at the Academy Awards on Sunday. The film, directed by Gints Zilbalodis, became the first from Latvia to receive a nomination and a win in this category.

The story follows a cat searching for safety after a flood. Made using open-source software Blender, Flow was produced on a $3.4 million budget, setting it apart from the larger studio productions in the category.

Accepting the award, Zilbalodis addressed the audience. “I’m really moved by the warm response our film has had, and I hope that doors will continue to open for independent animation filmmakers around the world,” he said. “We’re all in the same boat and must find ways to work together.”

Anora picks up five Oscars, in a surprisingly mixed Oscars 2025. Here’s the run down of what won and what didn’t.

Well, the Oscars has happened again, and perhaps now we can all get back to normal for a while.

This year’s statuette season was interesting enough given that there was no clear frontrunner like last year, when Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer dominated the awards race from start to finish. Still, set against the backdrop of the the hugely destructive Californian wildfires, it still all seemed a little superfluous at times. Meanwhile, The Brutalist director Brady Corbet provided an insight into the state of the non-blockbuster film business when he revealed that not being paid for being on a months-long awards trail meant he was living hand to mouth.

Still, fancy garments were donned and some statuettes were duly dished out and the 2025 Oscars.

The 2025 Oscars turned out to be a golden night for Anora. The critically acclaimed indie took home five Oscars including Best Director, Best Editing, Best Original Screenplay (all Sean Baker), Best Actress (Mikey Madison), and Best Picture. Anora won in every category it was nominated in except Best Supporting Actor (Yura Borisov) which went to Kieran Culkin as expected.

Emilia Pérez went into Hollywood’s Big Night with 13 nominations, winning in just two: Best Supporting Actress (Zoe Saldana) and Best Original Song. The Brutalist was recognized with three Oscars after earning 10 nominations. Wicked also earned 10 nominations and finished the night with two wins. And Dune: Part Two won the Achievement in Sound and Visual Effects Oscars out of its five nominations.

After a chaotic and, at times unpredictable awards season, it all came down to this –– the big show. Hosted by Conan O'Brien, the 97th Academy Awards happened Sunday evening in Los Angeles, and Anora emerged as Best Picture.

In a big win that underscored the growing prominence of indepedent animation, Gints Zibalodis’ “Flow,” the moving dialog-free tale of a solitary cat’s journey as it learns to survive after a great flood – that was made with open-source software Blender for just $3.4 million – won the Academy Award for best animated feature. It was the first nomination and first win for Latvia; “Flow” is also nominated for best animated feature.

Flow has just won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film. The movie's win is all the more remarkable considering its origins and how it was competing against big-budget animated features. This also marks a historic first, as it's the first time that a Latvian production has been nominated for, and won, an Academy Award.

Flow was designed with Blender, a free and open-source animation software. Flow was directed by Zilbalodis, who co-wrote the script with Kaža. The movie has been praised for its unique way of storytelling using only its visuals with no dialogue.

And so, the 97th Annual Academy Awards are in the books! Anora came out on top, with Sean Baker winning a fantastic four of the film’s five Oscars. Mickey Madison took Best Actress over frontrunner Demi Moore, while Adrien Brody won for The Brutalist. One-time frontrunner Emilia Perez won Best Original Song, while Zoe Saldana won Best Supporting Actress (for which she thanked her co-stars as a collective; she never thanked the seemingly now cancelled Karla Sofia Gascon).

As for the show itself, it was reasonably entertaining, although it lacked the charm of last year’s Oscars, which had memorable bits by John Cena, plus Michael Keaton channelling Batman, and more. This year seemed dry in comparison, with Conan O’Brien a fine but very safe host. Since its inception decades ago, the Academy Awards have expanded its reputation of cinematic excellence, which honors legendary achievements while making dreams a reality. The upcoming Oscar race features an unusual situation where primary category nominations will not be dominated by big names only.

The 2025 Academy Awards presented different choices for nominations compared to the 2024 competition, which was dominated by Christopher Nolan for Oppenheimer along with the Best Actress duel between Emma Stone and Lily Gladstone.

The EastEnders actor will compete for Best Actor at the Broadcasting Press Guild (Bpg) Awards, which is voted on by British television and media journalists.

Dyer starred as electronics businessman Freddie Jones in Disney’s series about sex and skulduggery in the British television business in the 1980s.

“A Complete Unknown,” “The Wild Robot” (which has been sweeping the guild and honorary society awards), and “Music by John Williams” were the live action, animation, and documentary winners at the 61st Cas Awards, held February 22 at the Beverly Hilton.

For TV, the Cinema Audio Society of sound mixers awarded “Masters of the Air,” “Shōgun,” and “The Bear” in the categories of non-theatrical/limited series, one-hour, and half-hour.

A note from Scott: Believe it or not, we are only a little more than 24 hours away from the close of the final round of Oscars voting — it wraps up on Tuesday at 5 p.m. Pt — at which point Hollywood is going to go very quiet for a few days.

Since our last forecast update, Neon’s Anora has continued its run of success with the guilds — on Feb. 15, it was awarded the best original screenplay prize at the Writers Guild Awards (while, in something of a surprise, the WGA awarded best adapted screenplay to Nickel Boys). But Anora received mixed news at the BAFTA Awards on Feb. 16.

The BAFTAs are Britain’s starriest and most prestigious awards ceremony and often a bellwether for the Oscars. This year, Netflix took home 4 awards over the course of the evening. The innovative musical crime drama Emilia Pérez went into the event with a bevy of nominations and ended the night with two wins, for Film Not in the English Language and Actress in a Supporting Role for Zoe Saldaña. In the Jacques Audiard–directed movie, Saldaña plays Rita, a tireless lawyer tasked with helping the titular character along a journey of self-discovery. “I kept feeling for the past couple of years like ‘something is missing.’ I was just missing incorporating all these mediums of art that make me feel whole,” Saldaña told Tudum recently. “I really needed Emilia Pérez. I had no idea how much I needed it.”

It’s not always the case that winning top entertainment awards makes a film a great watch. Some can be tough to get through but they are still very deserving of the accolade. But two top awards for a movie available on Netflix is a huge signal to make sure you see it if you haven't already.

If you weren't sure, then the Aardman animation was given two big thumbs up as recommendations on Sunday night. The British Academy of Film and Television Arts, more usually known as BAFTA celebrated the film with a couple of awards. It was awarded a BAFTA each for Best Animated Film and Children's Family Film.

Conclave and The Brutalist tied with four wins at the 2025 Ee BAFTA Film Awards, announced on January 16th during a ceremony hosted by David Tennant. Anora, Dune: Part Two, Emilia Perez, A Real Pain, Wicked, and Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Foul each picked up two awards, and David Jonsson (Alien: Romulus) was the recipient of this year’s Ee Rising Star Award.

Adrien Brody, Mikey Madison, Zoe Saldaña, and Kieran Culkin took home their first BAFTA Film Awards wins. Warwick Davis was honored with the BAFTA Fellowship in recognition of “his work as an actor and for using his platform to challenge societal prejudice and champion self-empowerment, advocating that people with dwarfism can and do lead full and meaningful lives.”

As awards season rumbles ever onwards, Edward Berger’s Conclave takes the top prize at this year’s BAFTA ceremony.

It was the 2025 BAFTA cermony last night and this rather strange awards season continued with Edward Berger’s Conclave taking home the Best Film prize in a category that has been largely dominated by speculation about its rivals. However, the papal election drama landed Best Film, Best British Film, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Editing gongs.

Also enjoying a good night at the ceremony was The Brutalist with the film scoring four awards – Best Director for Brady Corbet, Best Actor for Adrien Brody, not to mention Best Score (and what a score it is!) and Best Cinematography.

Sean Baker’s Anora landed Best Actress for Mikey Madison and Best Casting too. Dune: Part Two was awarded Best VFX and Best Sound, two prizes to honour what was an incredible technical achievement.

The 2025 Ee BAFTA Film Awards were hosted on Sunday by David Tennant at London’s Royal Festival Hall. Conclave won four BAFTAs, including Best Film, Film Editing, Adapted Screenplay and Outstanding British Film. This is Edward Berger’s second time winning the Best Film award, with his first being 2023’s All Quiet On The Western Front.

The Brutalist also won four awards, including Best Director for Brady Corbet, Leading Actor for Adrien Brody, Cinematography and Music Score, while Mikey Madison won Leading Actress for Anora. The film also took the BAFTA for Casting.

Emilia Perez was awarded with two BAFTAs – Supporting Actress Zoe Saldaña and Film Not in the English Language.

The delightful Wallace And Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl won two BAFTAs for Best Animated Feature and Children’s & Family Film. Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story was awarded Best Documentary.

Last year, London’s BAFTA Awards were hugely predictive, especially in the crafts categories. They anticipated the impact of the international voting bloc at the Oscars. But last year there was unity across geography. “Oppenheimer” took seven wins and went on to take seven Oscars as well. The way to read this year’s wins is to distinguish the local favorites from the ones likely to repeat at the Oscars, where the winners must garner both stateside and overseas support.

This year’s big BAFTA winner, British film “Conclave,” had 12 BAFTA nominations vs. eight Oscar nods, and won four including Best Film. “Audiences around the world embraced the movie in a big way,” said director Edward Berger. With mainstream appeal, “Conclave” will be a strong contender in three Oscar categories, including Picture, Editing, and Adapted Screenplay for Peter Straughan, who also won both Golden Globe and Critics Choice awards. The BAFTAs didn’t quite ignora Anora, the current Oscar frontrunner, but the British Academy, which has hundreds of voters in common with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, decided to shake things up. During its film awards Sunday, it split some big prizes, between their nominations leader Conclave winning four including Best Film, Best British Film, Film Editing and Best Adapted Screenplay, while The Brutalist also won four including Best Director for Brady Corbet and Best Actor for Adrien Brody, Cinematography and Music Score. In a mixed bag of results, it lost Best Original Screenplay to Jesse Eisenberg’s A Real Pain, which wasn’t even nominated for Best Picture.

Anora also surprisingly lost Original Screenplay just hours after taking its third major guild award at the WGA Awards on Saturday night in the category. But taking a different path than the DGA, PGA and WGA (often more predictive voting bodies in terms of where the Oscar winds are blowing), the Brits had other ideas, handing Anora only a Casting statuette before, in a bit of a shocker, at the end anointing star Mikey Madison Lead Actress over favorite Demi Moore.

Madison had lost to Moore at the Golden Globes and Critics Choice but now could be staging a comeback with SAG and Indie Spirits still to come pre-Oscars next weekend. Fernanda Torres, Brazil’s I’m Still Here Golden Globe Drama Actress winner, not nominated at BAFTA or SAG, is the wild card at the Oscars, making that category a bit of crapshoot at this point. Otherwise, the acting prizes at BAFTA for Brody, A Real Pain’s Kieran Culkin and Emilia Perez’s Zoe Saldaña add to their momentum heading into SAG. No one has knocked them out anywhere.

Neither of tonight’s big winners, Conclave or The Brutalist, won anything at the PGA Awards, DGA Awards or WGA. Otherwise, I think Peter Straughan’s Golden Globe- and Critics Choice-winning Conclave would have been among WGA winners for sure.

Nevertheless, it is unusual to nail a BAFTA Best Film without at least one major guild win. Conclave has a chance to change that trajectory at SAG, but that guild, with voting still open until Friday, won’t have a direct impact on Oscar with its winners as Oscar voting ends Tuesday. Conclave is in the running for Outstanding Cast, SAG’s equivalent of Best Picture. So what recent film won Best Film at BAFTA without also taking even one of the four major guild awards? 2014’s Boyhood comes to mind. It was nominated and shut out at each of them, won at BAFTA, and went on to lose the Best Picture Oscar to Birdman.

In fact until last year’s sweep from Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer at both Oscars and BAFTA, the previous nine years did not see agreement on their Best Picture winner with the exception of the disastrous 2020 Covid year, when Nomadland won both in a very weird awards season. Conclave, a movie every Oscar voter I talk with seems to admire, has the disadvantage of its director Edward Berger being snubbed in the Best Director race, but with a preferential ballot that might not be a hindrance anymore. Berger’s movies, All Quiet on the Western Front and Conclave, are now 2-for-2 as BAFTA’s Best Film. Impressive.

As for the much discussed Emilia Pérez, the scandal and controversy over Karla Sofía Gascón’s past tweets did not in the end completely derail the film’s overall chances at BAFTA as it turned out. Winning for Film Not in the English Language and Supporting Actress for Saldaña (who dedicated her win to her trans nephew), it joined the winners circle in what appears to be its strongest categories at the Oscars right now (there is no Best Song given at BAFTA). Still, with 11 BAFTA nominations you might wonder if its haul could not have been bigger without the baggage. We’ll never know. Netflix scored just as big tonight with its delightful and very British Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl, which ran over The Wild Robot and Flow for Best Animated Feature and also won in the Family/Children’s Film category.

Some comfort food for Anora: Only Brokeback Mountain managed to go on to lose the Best Picture Oscar after winning at PGA, DGA and WGA, just as Anora has done in the last week, and Anora still has SAG to conquer, something even Brokeback could not do. So BAFTA good times for Conclave and The Brutalist could be short-lived if you want to go by stats, but other than some of my fellow pundits who cares about those?

My unscientific surveys reflect some of the shuffling where Academy voters are concerned. First a good number are strugging to see as much as they can before ballots are due at 5 p.m. Pt Tuesday. One Sound Branch member told me at my Santa Barbara Film Festival tribute evening to Adrien Brody and Guy Pearce on Thursday night that he is frantically trying to watch on the digital platform, “but it is like homework,” he said. Others are all over the map in terms of their No. 1 choice, with some not even making it through certain titles that won’t be named here.

Three days left to vote, Academy members. Oscars two weeks from tonight. Fasten your seatbelts.
