In the mid-aughts, Chuck Norris was having a moment. Following the conclusion of his melodramatic cop western Walker, Texas Ranger in 2001, Norris did pretty much the same kinds of stuff he’d been doing for the previous three decades — starring in low-budget action movies with lots of martial arts.
But then, Norris became one of the very first internet memes, in large part thanks to Conan O’Brien and his writing staff. That’s because, in May 2005, Conan introduced the Walker, Texas Ranger lever on Late Night, a bit that featured O’Brien pulling on a lever that would play an out-of-context clip from Norris’ CBS series. Once that gag had run its course a few years later, two veteran Conan writers developed a TV show that began as a loose parody of Walker, Texas Ranger. They even got genuine comedy royalty, Chris Elliott, to star in it, along with then up-and-comer Brett Gelman.

Boy Kills World's Famke Janssen & Brett Gelman On Their "Shakespearean" Villains & Female Bond Hopes
Your browser does not support the video tag. Famke Janssen & Brett Gelman bring depth to their villainous roles in Boy Kills World, finding humor & pathos. Janssen advocates for a female Bond, while also humorously suggesting Gelman as her sidekick. Janssen also relished getting to reunite with Hemlock Grove's Bill Skarsgrd, feeling that it added "ammunition" to their characters' relationship.
Famke Janssen and Brett Gelman are a villainous family in Boy Kills World. After finding international success with her role as Bond Girl Xenia Onatopp in GoldenEye, Janssen has become well-known for her turns as Jean Grey in Fox's X-Men franchise, as well as in the Liam Neeson-led Taken trilogy and Netflix's Hemlock Grove. Gelman, meanwhile, is better known for his work in the comedic field, having starred in everything from Adult Swim's Eagleheart to the BBC/Prime Video's Fleabag, as well as the past three seasons of Netflix's Stranger Things.

"Welcome to Redville" trailer reveals a supernatural twist to the crime thriller genre, reminiscent of "Twin Peaks" and "Wayward Pines." The movie keeps the central couple trapped in a mysterious loop within the town, adding a fresh take to the robbers-on-the-run story formula. Chris Elliott's appearance as the straightforward sheriff provides an interesting blend of genres, with moments of comedy and bizarre situations.
Chris Elliott is a more straightforward lawman in a very bizarre town in an exclusive Welcome to Redville trailer. Led by The Order's Jake Manley and The Brothers Sun's Highdee Kuan, the mystery-thriller revolves around two robbers who attempt to lie low in a small desert town after a botched robbery, only to find themselves in a bizarre situation with the local residents and a promising final heist. There's a saying: just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they aren't after you. Enter Murray Bauman, a former journalist who has been following the events of Stranger Things very closely, coming to Chief Hopper with all sorts of ideas about Eleven and Barb and a vast government conspiracy over the years. And he's not wrong, though Hopper can't tell him that (at least at first).
Now that we've reached season three and Murray is practically an integral part of the group, it's time to ask: who plays this bearded believer? It's Brett Gelman, one of those quintessential "Hey, it's that guy!" actors.
Gelman got his start doing improv and stand-up comedy in New York City. He quickly developed improv group Monkey D*ck, which went on to be developed into a limited-release TV show for the Upright Citizens Brigade. He also developed a character called Rapzilla for a couple of...

Brett Gelman has never been one to shy away from stranger material. In fact, he dives into it—most often with projects of his own creation, like Brett Gelman’s Dinner In America, but also playing odd-duck characters in series like Eagleheart or Another Period. He’s also shown range as more buttoned down and grounded people in things like Fleabag and Married. His new film, Lemon, looks to combine those two skill sets, taking a distinctly unusual character and plunking him down in the middle of real-world situations, and letting the awkwardness unfold.
Co-written by Gelman and director Janicza Bravo, the movie stars Gelman as Isaac Lachmann, a 40-year-old man with a stalled career, a girlfriend on her way out the door, and a difficult family. And it only seems to get worse from there—“he just watches as his life unravels,” is how the film’s press notes...

For the duration of the back half of the second half of Mad Men season seven, viewers didn't know where Don was going, what he was doing, and whom he would meet. Still, fans (especially comedy fans) weren't expecting to see Brett Gelman, the comedic actor best known for his podcast appearances and roles on Eagleheart and Married. There, he sat in group therapy, looking not too far off from the character he played on Go On. Vulture caught up with Gelman (who will be performing at Vulture Festival's Comedy Night) to talk about getting the role, getting naked, and watching Jon Hamm shoot that final shot. What was the audition process like for getting this role? [Laughs.] It was all very secretive — always. I did a thing for a character and then Matthew Weiner had me read for a different character, which was the character I ended up playing.

The New Yorker Presents, Season 1, Episode 1: “Pilot”
Directed by Jonathan Demme
Released January 15, 2015 by Amazon
Of all the recent pilots released by Amazon, The New Yorker Presents is easily the most interesting. A half hour smorgasbord of content, this first episode is completely fascinating in terms of its form and what that could mean for both Amazon’s original series and television in general going forward.
The conceit of The New Yorker Presents is simple: a little bit of this, a little bit of that. This first episode contains a short film, a conversation/interview with an artist, a short documentary and a recorded performance of a poem. The ultimate success of a series like this is similar to that of a sketch comedy in that episodes and individual segments will be hit or miss week-to-week. Obviously, the goal becomes bringing together a collection of talent that is of...

There was a certain point in history, somewhere between The Simpsons and Daria, when TV animation ceased to be the sole provenance of kids drooling over their morning bowls of Lucky Charms. These days, cartoons for grown-ups are not only ubiquitous, but hilariously twisted and high-quality to boot — and that's due in large part to a phenomenon called Adult Swim. What began as a freaky little block of late-night programming has evolved into a vast, even-freakier universe of animated and live-action series with a sardonic, absurdist sense of humor that's...

Adult Swim has made a stir attracting quality guest stars for special event programs of late, including Jon Hamm, Paul Rudd, and Amy Poehler -- and that's just for Adam Scott's "The Greatest Event in Television History." Now, they'll be broadcasting their first celebrity dinner party with a late night twist. "Dinner With Friends With Brett Gelman and Friends" premieres Thursday, April 24th at midnight, and Indiewire has exclusive photos as well as the full list of cast members/dinner guests. Joining Gelman for the half-hour special he co-wrote with director Jason Woliner ("Eagleheart") are Dale Dickey ("Justified," "True Blood"), Gilbert Gottfried, Fred Melamed ("A Serious Man," "In a World..."), Alison Pill ("The Newsroom"), Lance Reddick ("The Wire," "Fringe"), Anthony Atamanuik ("30 Rock," "Broad City") and Alex Karpovsky ("Girls"). The scripted comedy special invites guests to "a lively night of dining, showbiz chit-chat, and psychological torture." Gelman, a...

It appears we'll once again have a place to regularly see Judy Greer. FX announced today that they've ordered ten episodes of Married, a comedy from Andrew Gurland about a couple who gets along famously in all ways, except the sexy way. Greer plays the wife to Nat Faxon's husband. The show will also feature noted funny people Jenny Slate (SNL, Parks and Recreation) and Brett Gelman (Eagleheart, Go On). FX is also giving ten episodes to You're the Worst, a comedy from former Weeds and Orange Is the New Black writer Stephen Falk, about two self-destructive people who fall in love. Both shows will premiere in July. Who needs summer love when you can watch comedically bad love?...

To me, there is no more rewarding and consistently, hilariously wacko comedy on TV than Eagleheart, which wraps up its third season this Thursday night at midnight on Adult Swim. Based on its original logline, it was always a weird fit for a network that is the dominant late-night destination for young viewers: Chris Elliott in a Walker Texas Ranger parody — two early nineties comedy touchstones that probably seem perplexingly dated (and therefore easily shrug-offable) to Swim's core audience. (What, Weird Al wasn't available to do the theme song?) Yet Eagleheart gradually ditched the ultraviolent-cop-in-a-cowboy-hat easy laughs and this season threw Elliott's U.S. marshal Chris Monsanto into a MacGuffin of a mythology (simultaneously a parody of serialized cop shows and Bad Robot series) that has given its creators an excuse to veer in more surreal directions than any ten-minute episode should be able to contain. A recent episode, "Spats,...

"Eagleheart" is Adult Swim's series about of group of crime-fighting U.S. Marshals that stars Chris Elliott (also known as Not Timothy Olyphant). Chris Elliott has gotten to goof around for the last two seasons of his Adult Swim show Eagleheart (which returned at midnight last night), but the new season sees the show break from form, with Elliott's U.S. Marshal character on a mission to solve a deep-rooted conspiracy. This tears apart the show's previous fifteen-minute sketch structure and allows Elliott to stretch as an actor: For the first time on this show, he finds himself looking for his character's motivation. ("I sound like an obnoxious actor now!" he laughed. "But I was hesitant to call myself an actor before. I can now.") Elliott chatted with Vulture about drama, his assessments of Bill Murray and Rob Lowe, and his man crush on Hugh Grant. While I was on hold, instead of hold music, it was a news report about the Philippines, so my mind wandered away from comedy for a moment.

According to Chris Elliott and Maria Thayer, acting on "Eagleheart" is no cakewalk. Elliott has to constantly figure out if he's happy, sad or mad. Thayer's relationships with her co-stars apparently resemble the contentious interactions she shares with them on screen, as Elliott and fellow cast member Brett Gelman regularly give her shit. "It's a hard job," she insists. But all of that effort is worth it -- to viewers, at least: "Eagleheart" is one of the funniest shows on television, and as it embarks on its third season, which kicked off last night on Adult Swim, the show makes a transition from single-serving episodes to something more ambitious -- a season-long narrative which, according to Elliott, you could edit into a feature. Elliott and Thayer sat down with Indiewire earlier this week to discuss their work on the show from its earliest days until now, when it not only...

Watch out, bad guys and lovers of incredibly surreal comedy: Adult Swim's Eagleheart will be returning for its third season on November 14. Unlike the first two seasons' weird-ass-case-of-the-week formula, this season's ten episodes will tell one long serialized tale called "Paradise Rising." It's hard to describe based on this brand-new promo, but it seems to involve time travel, gunning down Martin Sheen, and Chris Monsanto hooking up with bearded deputy Brett (Brett Gelman). There's also ... well, better you just watch and try to make sense out of it yourself. But it certainly looks promisingly loopy in the best Get a Life tradition.

Chicago – Charlie Kaufman (“Adaptation,” “Being John Malkovich”) once wrote for a TV sitcom so odd that its network and most of the U.S. had no idea what to make of it. Without question, “Get a Life” was ahead of its time. So much of the twisted comedy of 2012 owes a debt to this true oddity from two decades ago, a unique gem that is finally getting a complete series release years after fans started clamoring for it.
Rating: 4.5/5.0
Was it worth the wait? First and foremost, the show is much funnier than I remembered. As the audio commentary points out (and there’s one on every episode), the series premiere of “Get a Life” was a relatively straightforward comedy about a man-child. It wasn’t nearly as dark and twisted as it would later become. Quickly, “Get a Life” turned more into a show about a demented loner and...

I've been a fan of Adult Swim since Cartoon Network launched the platform in 2001 (believe it or not, it really is that old), and have witnessed the programming block go through lots of changes -- first adding high-profile off-network acquisitions like Futurama and Family Guy, and making a notable transition away from animated programming. With the second change, Adult Swim has become one of the most significant television venues for American comedy, all the while establishing itself as a meta-spoof on the formal constraints of TV networks, right down to its most recent live-action series, each of which employ genre parody in some very novel ways.
As Adult Swim has matured, it has positioned itself as a broken mirror version of a television network, with skewed detective dramas (Eagleheart), reality fare taken to its most absurd extreme (Delocated), and even a bizarre riff on late night talk (The Eric Andre Show...

Louie, Season 3, Episode 8: “Dad”
Written by Louis Ck
Directed by Louis Ck
Airs Thursdays at 10:30pm Et on FX
After last week’s mostly “off” outing, Louie comes back swinging with one of its most brazenly cinematic episodes, a 22-minute whip-pan through a wide variety of topics and moods that feels very much like a dry run for Ck’s theoretical return to feature-length filmmaking. (Ck has stated that he’s considering running a Kickstarter-esque campaign to raise the funds to independently produce another movie, hoping to dodge the stdio interference that he feels doomed his surreal comedy Pootie Tang.)
“Dad” ostensibly follows a single plot thread for its entire duration, but it does so through a series of otherwise disconnected vignettes, all of which work, which is a relief after the draggy last two thirds of “Ikea/Piano Lesson.” “Dad” also opts out of the traditional Louie opening,...

Conan O'Brien's production company is developing a pilot for a new late night program hosted by comedian Pete Holmes intended to follow "Conan" on TBS, reports Vulture citing sources close to the show.
Holmes, 33, was named one of Variety's 10 Comics to Watch in 2011, and has hosted the popular interview podcast "You Made it Weird" since October of last year. Audiences may know his face best from VH1's "Best Week Ever" and for his Comedy Central appearances, but many are already familiar with what he sounds like -- he voices the eTrade baby in the company's popular commercials.
HuffPost Comedy named Holmes as a standout performer at this year's South By Southwest festival, largely due to a live "You Made it Weird" featuring Judd Apatow, so we're pretty pleased to hear this news. (Also, we take issue with Vulture describing Holmes' comedy as "cynical," which we all know is Conan's least favorite quality.

If you're gullible enough to believe that Matthew Weiner has written the series finale of "Mad Men," which will air in the summer of 2014 at the very earliest, then we hear that Jon Hamm wants your number to give you a big smooch.
Jason Woliner, a comedy writer and director best known for directing "Human Giant" and "Eagleheart," emphatically posted this "leaked" "Mad Men" finale to his Twitter last night. "Holy Shit i was right!! Leaked Final Page Of Mad Men Finale Script," Woliner tweeted. The page of the script took the Internet by fire after it was retweeted by Woliner's "Human Giant" colleague Aziz Ansari.
But reading the script, it's immediately obvious that it's less authentic than (Spoilers) Pete Campbell's marital vows. Although we're not going to lie, we'd love to see the series end this way. Read the script and let us know if you agree.

Exclusive: On the heels of TBS picking up Conan O’Brien’s late-night talk show for two more years, O’Brien is renewing the production deal for his Conaco Prods banner at TBS sibling Warner Bros TV. O’Brien’s first signed a two-year overall deal with Warner Bros TV in 2010, shortly after the comedian inked a pact with TBS for a late-night show following his exit from NBC. Before that, Conaco had been based at NBC since its launch. In addition to O’Brien’s TBS talk show Conan, Conaco produces another series, Eagleheart, which airs on Turner-owned Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim block. The Wme-repped company, which is run by David Kissinger, recently produced TBS comedy pilot Bff and has another comedy pilot, Super Fun Night, in contention at CBS.

It's definitely slim pickings on DVD and Blu-ray this week with even fewer new releases than usual, but at least there's a power trio of family films that includes Steven Spielberg's War Horse, Cameron Crowe's We Bought a Zoo and the acclaimed documentary Being Elmo: A Puppeteer's Journey. Beyond that we've also got Paddy Considine's bleak directorial debut Tyrannosaur and the first season of Chris Elliott's Adult Swim series Eagleheart, which I have heard good things about. As for Blu-ray, it's all about Roman Polanski's Chinatown and Madonna: Truth or Dare, a movie that remains to this day one of the highest grossing documentaries of all time. What will you be buying or renting this week? Check out the full list of releases after the jump. Amazon.com Widgets

It looks like Conan O’Brien is going to get his own show (well another one).
CBS just greenlit a pilot for Super Fun Night, starring and created by Bridesmaids actress Rebel Wilson. The show will center around three girlfriends with a nerdy streak who make it their goal to have as much fun as possible every Friday night.
As self-fulfilling as the title is, the show has brought on a pretty powerful group of comedians to back it. Conan’s television firm Conaco will be producing the show alongside executive producers Jeff Ross (Conan, Kids In The Hall) and David Kissinger (Eagleheart). O’Brien is also signed on as an executive producer, though it is unknown whether or not he will star. Still, I’m sure we can expect to see a bit of his signature on it.

My second day at Nycc started off with a 25-minute wait on a line that wrapped almost entirely around the Javits Center. I later found out there was a separate press / VIP entrance I could have used but the volunteer I asked apparently did not know about it either. The line wasn’t too bad though considering how many people in awesome costumes I got to see while I waited.
Once inside the convention, I saw the reason for the massive lines. The place was packed. Some aisles on the show floor were impossible to navigate and even the press rooms were full. I knew Saturday would be the biggest day at the con but I just was not prepared. The massive amount of foot traffic made taking decent pictures of people in costumes much more difficult but I still managed some decent shots.
