In 2010, I was probably really sad. I’m okay now (promise), but as a closeted kid firmly in the throes of high school, life wasn’t easy. Luckily, I’d started working and had enough month-to-month to support not only my physical Netflix subscription, but the new, fancy streaming option, too. It’s easy to forget, but 2010 Netflix streaming wasn’t anything like it is now. Options were scarce, though in terms of finding myself in horror, there was enough between the two subscriptions to introduce me to an entirely new world of genre voices I’d never encountered before.

I certainly hope your 2010 was better, but whether it was good, bad, or a bonafide nightmare, here are some of the best of what 2010 horror had to offer you’ve likely forgotten about. Even better? They’re all currently streaming online.

Their postmortem produces baffling clues to her origins that they will have to make sense of before her curse can take over their lives.

The Last Voyage of the Demeter director André Øvredal tackled this startlingly original story that Stephen King compared favorably with Alien and the early work of body horror king David Cronenberg. The gruesome autopsy triggers a series of supernatural events, while also provoking a painful dissection of the coroners' personal history. Excellent FX complements equally great performances, the best of which is delivered by the eerily lively Jane Doe herself.

Over the last 15 years, director André Øvredal has brought us the likes of Troll Hunter, The Autopsy of Jane Doe, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, Mortal, and The Last Voyage of the Demeter. He missed out on the Stephen King / Richard Bachman adaptation The Long Walk and has said that not making that movie is one of the big regrets of his life… but he’s not letting that missed opportunity slow him down. Deadline reports that Øvredal is teaming up with Paramount and Walter Hamada’s 18hz on a new horror project – and while we don’t know the title yet, we do know that the the film’s cast includes Oscar winner Melissa Leo (The Fighter), Jacob Scipio (Bad Boys: Ride or Die), and Lou Llobell (Foundation)!

The cast is shaping up for Paramount’s untitled horror movie from The Autopsy of Jane Doe director André Øvredal.

Deadline reports that Oscar winner Melissa Leo (The Fighter), Jacob Scipio (Bad Boys for Life), and Lou Llobell (“Foundation”) have boarded the project.

The screenplay is written by Zachary Donohue (The Den) and T.W. Burgess (Mister Howl), but plot details are being kept under wraps.

Former Warner Bros production executive Walter Hamada, who steered the Conjuring and It franchises, is producing via his 18hz as part of his first-look deal with Paramount. It screenwriter Gary Dauberman is also producing via Coin Operated.

Øvredal earned intentional attention with his Norwegian found footage mockumentary Trollhunter before making his English-language debut with The Autopsy of Jane Doe. He has since helmed the likes of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark and The Last Voyage of the Demeter.

As the genre continues to expand with other titles, the Bendy and the Ink Machine movie is finally gaining steam as Andr vredal has signed on to direct the adaptation. Created by Paul Crawford and Mike Desjardins, the eponymous horror franchise has put players in the shoes of a variety of protagonists racing to determine the truth behind the ink-based demons of Joey Drew Studios and escape the various monsters of the fictional animation studio. After the success of the five-episode original game and its prequels and sequels, a Bendy and the Ink Machine movie was announced on Christmas Day 2023.

At the start of last year, former DC Films boss Walter Hamada signed a first-look deal with Paramount Pictures, the idea being that he would become, as Deadline put it, “the architect of Paramount’s mainstream horror genre pod, with the mission to release several low- to mid-budget films per year across theatrical and streaming.” Recently, there have been casting announcements for a movie called Primate, which is being directed by genre regular Johannes Roberts and is part of Hamada’s horror-minded efforts at Paramount. Now, Deadline has broken the news that another Hamada horror project that’s moving forward at Paramount has gotten another genre regular, Andre Ovredal, to sign on as director.

Ovredal will be directing this other film from a screenplay written by Zachary Donohue and T.W. Burgess. Donohue previously directed and co-wrote the 2013 found footage horror film The Den and wrote and directed the TV series The Unknowable.

Synopsis: It’s just another night at the morgue for a father (Brian Cox) and son (Emile Hirsch) team of coroners, until an unidentified, highly unusual corpse comes in. Discovered buried in the basement of the home of a brutally murdered family, the young Jane Doe—eerily well preserved and with no visible signs of trauma—is shrouded in mystery. As they work into the night to piece together the cause of her death, the two men begin to uncover the disturbing secrets of her life.

With only one weak opening, the weekend box office totals have understandably dropped below any since late June. Have no fear, though: overall performance remains positive.

The same weekend last year managed only a paltry $65 million. The over $115 million that came in this weekend continues the momentum and brings the industry closer to a $4 billion summer — what was seen as an optimistic goal before May is now within view.

If so, the “Barbie” (Warner Bros.)/”Oppenheimer” (Universal) tandem remains the biggest contributing factor. The top two titles (“Oppenheimer” climbed back to #2) notched over 45 percent of the total gross, with both dropping only slightly more than a third in their fourth weekends. Another $33.7 million haul puts Greta Gerwig’s comedy smash up to $526 million domestic, nearing $1.2 billion worldwide. Christopher Nolan’s biopic added another $18.8 million, getting it to $264 million domestic, over $650 million worldwide so far.

There are ominous clouds gathering over the opening weekend of "The Last Voyage of the Demeter," which is rather appropriate for a film about a ship's crew who are doomed to become a mid-journey vampire snack. Made for a steep (for a horror movie) budget of $45 million, "Last Voyage of the Demeter" is set to fall short of expectations that were already set very low. Though Variety reported in the wake of Thursday previews that the film was heading for an opening weekend between $7 million and $9 million, Friday's numbers are now pointing to a debut of just $6.5 million, per The Hollywood Reporter.

Based on a chapter from Bram Stoker's "Dracula," the film was directed by André Øvredal, who has some great horror movies already under his belt, including "Troll Hunter," "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark," and "The Autopsy of Jane Doe." But mixed reviews indicate that "The Last Voyage of the Demeter...

The Last Voyage of the Demeter had a disappointing box office performance, making only $750,000 during its preview screenings at $319.15 per cinema. Despite its struggles, the film is expected to make around $6.5 million to $7 million during its opening weekend, with a total domestic run of $20 million to $25 million. Comparisons to the film Renfield suggest that The Last Voyage of the Demeter may struggle to make a profit, as Renfield made $8 million during its opening weekend and $26.3 million worldwide.

As the ole cliché goes, The Last Voyage of the Demeter sank at the box office. The latest Universal Pictures project to feature Count Dracula — portrayed this time around by Javier Botet — ran aground much like the new film’s ill-fated ship when it sailed into cinemas on Thursday, August 10. Director André Øvredal's movie struggled to find an audience as it failed to reach even $1 million during its preview screenings.

"The Last Voyage of the Demeter" brings a chapter of Bram Stoker's "Dracula" to new vitality. It pulses with agonizing kill sequences, doused in buckets of blood and torn flesh. Director André Øvredal, known for helming such films as "Trollhunter," "The Autopsy of Jane Doe," and "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark," smothers the screen with depth and brilliant detail. He doesn't waste a single frame, delivering enough visual storytelling to keep you compelled to dive further into a great, unholy abyss.

"The Last Voyage of the Demeter" stuns with gorgeous cinematography, a smattering of rain-drenched sequences of tension, and plenty of blood-curdling, fang-toothed images that'll haunt you forever. Credit should also be given to cinematographers Roman Osin and Tom Stern for their expertly-crafted work alongside Øvredal. Without them, the film would not contain such an impressive style as it does.

If you've been paying attention to the genre space, you know that 2023 is a gigantic year for David Dastmalchian. The prolific character actor has already worked on "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania," "Boston Strangler," "The Boogeyman," and "Oppenheimer," and our fingers are crossed that "Late Night with the Devil," a banger that debuted at this year's SXSW Film Festival, will also get a release before the year is over. But that's not all: Dastmalchian also plays a major role in "The Last Voyage of the Demeter," a spooky vampire story taken from a chapter of Bram Stoker's "Dracula" and plays out largely on what Ron Burgundy might call "an old, old wooden ship."

The horror film from director André Øvredal, The Last Voyage of the Demeter, feels like it was intended to be a gothic set piece that affected a slow burn on the crew and audience to create a lasting horror experience. Instead, the film proves neither interesting nor scary in the sense that it is ostensibly supposed to be a horror film.

The story is culled from a chapter in the novel Dracula by Bram Stoker, that chronicles the journey of the merchant ship Demeter as it transports unmarked wooden crates from Carpathia to London. Once at sea, strange occurrences beset the ship and when the ship finally arrives on the English shores, it is a crewless, derelict wreck.

Hapless sailors become a blood-sucking buffet in a lifeless and predictable vampire horror flick. The Last Voyage of the Demeter, based on "The Captain's Log" chapter from Bram Stoker's Dracula, had the base elements to be terrifying. Getting stuck on a doomed ship at sea with a ravenous beast is a promising premise. There's nowhere to run or hide. Fight for your life or die horribly. What we get is a painfully slow slog through tired genre tropes. The characters don't have an ounce of self-preservation or rationality. They're akin to flailing teens running blindly in the dark with a killer ambling behind them.

Bram Stoker’s vampire creation proves endlessly malleable, subject to all sorts of depictions from actors as far afield as Max Schreck, Bela Lugosi, Christopher Lee, Frank Langella, Gary Oldman and, most recently, Nicolas Cage. The role is catnip, especially since the Count can be as sexy as he is menacing, as seductive as he is deadly.

That is, until his portrayal in André Ovredal’s Gothic horror film based on a single chapter, “The Captain’s Log,” from Stoker’s 1897 classic novel. As portrayed by Javier Botet, this is a vampire who seems more a feral wild creature than anything resembling a figure who could reasonably pass among human society. He’s one of the viscerally scariest Draculas ever seen onscreen, but he’s also one of the dullest.

“The Last Voyage of the Demeter” has a terrible title, but in theory the film sounds intriguing. It wants to be an old-fashioned monster movie, the kind they used to produce back when horror films were actual movies, made with the stodgy well-carpentered rhythm that any movie was made with. “The Last Voyage of the Demeter” is set in 1897, and for most of it we’re aboard a large wooden merchant ship with multiple sails — the Demeter, a handsome relic, since this is already the era when metal ships were coming in — that’s sailing from Bulgaria to London. The film moves slowly and deliberately, and it’s been shot like some studio sea-voyage period drama from 1966. Much of it is incredibly, knowingly square, with each crew member defined by one or two traits. But this is not just any ship, or any monster.

"Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark" might be the ideal stepping stone for younger horror fans not yet ready for the really intense stuff. The film came out in 2019, but it harkens back to creepy older family films like "The Watcher in the Woods" and "Return to Oz" -- that is, films that put their young protagonists in legitimately horrifying situations and left you wondering if they'd make it out okay. "Scary Stories" goes even further by having terrible things actually happen to its heroes. The only problem is it backtracks on this a little at the very end, tacking on a short epilogue that ties up some loose plot threads a little too neatly while also setting the stage for a sequel.

Steering the ship is director André Øvredal, who broke out with the adventurous Troll Hunter before creeping audiences out with The Autopsy of Jane Doe and then Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. The trailer for his latest, The Last Voyage of Demeter, suggests a tone somewhere in between; an epic-sized adventure packed with claustrophobic scares.

Bloody Disgusting spoke with Øvredal for the trailer’s release about what we can expect to see and the horrors that await.
