There are movies that gently tug at our heartstrings, and then there are those that mercilessly shatter our emotional defenses. And Billy Ray's Secret in Their Eyes, a heart-wrenching mystery drama, falls squarely into the latter category. The movie is a remake of an Argentinian film from 2009, which, in turn, is an adaptation of a novel. The story has indeed gone through numerous retellings, adapted across different mediums and cultures. But its emotional core has always remained the same. And this unchanging essence has allowed the story to remain a delicate, touching piece to be told with different characters and contexts for different times and audiences. As a result, the American version of Secret in Their Eyes, which stars Julia Roberts and Nicole Kidman, has achieved much the same while adding more in terms of an amazing cast and fresh cultural context.

It’s a fairly big month on Prime Video in March, at least compared to the other streaming service offerings! There are are two major films arriving on Amazon’s streamer. The first is a remake of the Patrick Swayze action classic Road House. Stepping into the late Swayze’s shoes? A crazy-jacked Jake Gyllenhaal, who really seemed to want to go the extra mile for this project.
The other big film coming to Prime Video is Ricky Stanicky, and the plot sounds really fun! It follows three friends who have always blamed their mistakes on an imaginary guy called Ricky Stanicky. When they have to finally introduce people to Stanicky, they decide to hire a washed-up actor (John Cena) to impersonate him. Hilarity ensues, maybe? But if neither of those make your watchlist, there’s also the return of the animated hit series Invincible.

AMC lost money in the final quarter of 2023, though not as much as Wall Street anticipated — thank goodness for Taylor Swift! Still, time to break glass and bring back Nicole Kidman.
The AMC Theatres “We Make Movies Better” ad campaign first launched in the fall of 2021. Unlike nearly every other commercial ever, Kidman’s went viral. They came to YouTube for magic.
On Wednesday, February 28, AMC Entertainment chief Adam Aron said three “30-second versions of the highly acclaimed original pre-show advertisement will make their theatrical debut” in March. The first version begins on Friday, March 1, he continued, adding that AMC “will rotate in a few new versions in the coming months on a rotating basis.”
So these aren’t really new spots, just new versions of the original one. The “We Make Movies Better” theme remains, as does the point: AMC Theatres has the best tech and amenities.

New Duke Of Edinburgh Opens Sky Studios Sound Stage
Prince Edward, the new Duke of Edinburgh, has opened a sound stage at Sky Studios Elstree. The former Earl of Wessex, who is a Patron of the Production Guild of Great Britain, headed to the Hertfordshire film and TV studio the day before he took on his father Prince Philip’s former title. Last Thursday, he toured the site, meeting local charity partners and young talent, before unveiling a plaque on Stage 5 to commemorate the significant moment for the UK’s film and TV sector as it marks the largest brand-new studio facility to open in the UK for decades. Sky Studios Elstree will house 13 sound stages and Sky has said it will generate an additional £3B ($3.6B) of production investment in the UK creative sector during its first five years. February is the shortest month of the year but Prime Video is paying that no mind with its jam-packed list of new releases for February 2023.
This really is an uncommonly stuffed month on the Amazon streamer and it all starts with a handful of Amazon Originals. Amazon’s original offerings kick off with the release of Dave Franco-directed romcom Somebody I Used to Know on Feb. 10. That is followed by Carnival Row season 2 – a gritty fantasy crime drama is set in a world of steampunky fairies. The show stars Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevigne and this batch of episodes will be its swan song. Meanwhile The Consultant on Feb. 24 is a dark comedy workplace thriller starring Christoph Waltz.
The biggest hits this month, however, might just be some recent cinema faves. If February is for lovers, Amazon didn’t get the memo as there are quite a few horror movies of note here.

Screenwriter Billy Ray has confirmed that a sequel to Nicole Kidman‘s viral AMC Theatres ad is already in the works.
“I got a text from the chairman of AMC about a month ago asking me if I would write the next one, and of course the answer to that is yes,” Ray told Vanity Fair. “It’s already written.”
The Oscar-nominated screenwriter, known for penning films like “The Hunger Games,” “Richard Jewell,” “Flightplan” and “Captain Phillips,” was brought to the AMC project by Kidman, with whom he’d previously worked on the 2015 film “Secret in Their Eyes” and Adrian Lyne‘s forthcoming adaptation of author A.S.A Harrison‘s “The Silent Wife.”
Ray added that when Kidman first asked him to write the ad, he decided to do it “as a favor” — that is, until his agent got involved.

Nearly a year ago, the nation’s movie theaters were floundering and exhibitors were fearful that moviegoing could become a relic of the past. Sure, there were occasional big-screen hits, like “A Quiet Place Part II” and Marvel’s “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” but even those films weren’t bringing in pre-pandemic ticket sales and nothing was getting people really, truly excited about going to the movies.
So AMC Theatres, the country’s largest cinema chain, took matters into its own hands. Rather than waiting for Hollywood studios to release the Next Big Thing, the company wrote a check for 25 million and set out to craft an advertisement to promote movie theaters rather than just movies. To convey its message, AMC turned to Nicole Kidman, the Oscar-winner who endeared herself to audiences through crowd-pleasers, dark thrillers and tear-jerkers like “Moulin Rouge,” “Eyes Wide Shut” and “The Hours.

Hello, everyone! We’re back after a brief hiatus to give you a look at the horror and sci-fi headed home this week on home media. As it turns out, the month of August’s releases are starting off on a quiet note, as we have two titles getting the 4K treatment this Tuesday—Dario Argento’s Tenebrae and Flatliners from Joel Schumacher—and then a handful of indie horror arriving on both Blu-ray and DVD: Scream at the Devil, Paranormal Devil, The Farm, and Joker’s Poltergeist.

Known for his impressively eclectic filmography and for helping to launch the careers of several young Hollywood stars of the 80s and 90s, Joel Schumacher tackles the existential question that, at one time or another, haunts us all: what awaits us after we die?

ViacomCBS International Studios (Vis) has unveiled a new slate of projects tapping talents as diverse as “Guilt” writer-creator Neil Forsyth, “The Great” writer Vanessa Alexander, “Wild District” originator Cristian Conti and “High School Musical” writer Peter Barsocchini.
Underscoring Vis’ ambitions to play in the big league of international local content producer-distributors, both in production volume and breadth of content, Vis also confirmed its drive into documentary production, of both doc features and series, and unveiled its first four titles.
This year will, moreover, see Vis bow development and production of its first made-for-streaming movies and first content for Vis Kids, created last year.
Launched in 2018, Vis has proved one of the fastest-growing production powers on the Latin American and Latinx scene, signing first-look deals with Argentina’s Juan José Campanella, writer-director of the Oscar winning “The Secret in Their Eyes,” and Ariel Winograd, director of remake phenomenon “Ten Days Without Mom.

Bolivia’s Gory Patiño, writer-director for his country’s Academy Award submission “The Goalkeeper” – also the highest grossing Bolivian film in 15 years – and his frequent filmmaking partner, Spain’s Luis Reneo, are participating in this year’s Ventana Sur films in progress section with their socio-political thriller “Pseudo.”
The project was also selected as a finalist for a post-production award at the Havana Film Festival and, in before production, was awarded development prizes by Spain’s Ibermedia and the Bolivia Lab. It also tapped funding from La Paz city hall and comes as the Bolivian government is in the process of introducing federal funding regulation, the last country in the region to provide such state incentives.
All that’s left now is to secure completion finance for post-production. The film will be ready for a 2019 release.

It’s been a while since Julia Roberts had a cinematic homerun, and her last string of feature films are dismaying to say the least. She featured in the “Secret In Their Eyes” remake which nobody saw, took a lead role in the thriller “Money Monster” which, again, nobody saw, and even went as low as starring in one of the worst movies of 2016, “Mother’s Day.” (We’ll politely overlook that she lent her voice to “Smurfs: The Lost Village“).

It appears someone in the universe has decided to remake Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Yes. The Musical. You know, the one with Donny Osmond and all the songs. Well, apparently Elton John thought it was a good idea so here we are. To make matters better (worse?) it is planned to be an animated film. It was announced at CinemaCon 2017 on Tuesday by Adam Fogelson, chairman of Stx's Motion Picture group. The production company known for such great works as The Gift and Secret in Their Eyes. And I'm not even trying to be facetious. They only started in 2015, so their slate of movies is very little.
For those who are completely ignorant of the musical, it is about Joseph, from the bible, who got a colorful coat because he was best boy of his family, and his brothers got in a hissy and sold him to slavers.

While it was a perfectly enjoyable film, it’s not like anyone was really asking for a remake of The Intouchables, the French movie that landed back in 2011 to mostly positive reviews. That hasn’t stopped The Weinstein Company from pressing on with their project though and after bringing on Bryan Cranston and Kevin Hart to star, the studio is now looking to round out the cast.
Empire’s reporting today that Nicole Kidman and The Night Of breakout Amara Karan have boarded the remake, which has Neil Burger in the director’s chair and Jon Hartmere on scripting duties. Johnny Depp, in a time not all that long ago, was easily one of the most promising, praised and in-demand actors in all of Hollywood. Now, while still in fairly high-demand, his promise and prominence have definitely taken a steep dive. For the second year in a row, he has been named Hollywood's most overpaid actor.
Forbes recently published their list of overpaid actors for 2016 and just like in 2015, Johnny Depp came out on top. With movies like Alice Through the Looking Glass flopping at the box office, the actor managed to only bring in $2.80 for $1 he was paid for starring in the movie. That is an incredibly bad return and says a lot about just how far he has fallen. Even his more recent outings that were well received, like Black Mass, didn't bring in very much at the box office, but he was still paid a hefty sum for his services.

MaryAnn’s quick take…
Busy with CGI to hide the emptiness where the emotional core should be. Even the mechanics of getting a man from mere mortal to demigod-in-a-cape are rote. I’m “biast” (pro): love the McU; love the cast
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Forget everything you think you know,” Chiwetel Ejiofor intones here. Chiwetel Ejiofor! In that amazing voice of his that commands you heed him! And he’s wearing mystical robes and has secret magic knowledge and everything, so you just want to swoonily give in to his authority.
Doctor Strange certainly looks different from all the other Marvel movies, but even its differences are familiar.
Alas, Ejiofor (Triple 9, Secret in Their Eyes) — playing a planet-protecting wizard named Mordo, which I kept hearing, distractingly, as “Mordor” — wants you to forget everything you know about...

Strikingly original, a truly rare pleasure in a cinematic environment clogged with cookie-cutter films. Jason Bateman and Nicole Kidman are splendid. I’m “biast” (pro): big Jason Bateman fan
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
I have not read the source material
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Jason Bateman’s second film as director opens with a sequence that is one of the most provocative introductions to a movie I’ve ever seen. I am not going to tell you what it entails, not even in the barest outlines, because watching it unfold and feeling wonderfully bewildered at where it goes is a truly rare pleasure in a cinematic environment clogged with cookie-cutter films. And once it’s over, you’re left with an even more delicious sense of having absolutely no idea what sort of story this is setting up.

Jeremy Saulnier’s masterful film, Green Room, got a theatrical release last month and I hope most of you saw it theatrically. I’m a huge fan of Saulnier since Murder Party and even saw Blue Ruin twice during a film festival. While I saw Green Room last year at Fantastic Fest, as soon as it was in St. Louis last Friday, I went to see it again. Imagine Assault on Precinct 13 or any siege film for that matter but done in reverse where our protaganists have to fight to get out of a room. Mix in skinheads with Patrick Stewart as the leader, vicious dogs and punk music and you get a general idea. The good news is, if you’re like me, you don’t have to wait long to see the film again in the comfort of your own home. If you were not fortunate enough to get Green Room in your city after the nationwide expansion on April 29th, this is even better news for you.

Sylvester Stallone has lined up a feature with Stx Entertainment, the studio announced during its CinemaCon presentation on Tuesday.
Neither party would officially reveal anything about the project, although Screendaily understands Lawrence Grey will produce through Grey Matter Productions.
Stx sources confirmed to Screendaily that the project is not the mob film Scarpa, which Stallone has been shopping around.
“I’ve joined their family,” Stallone told attendees at the Colosseum. “We have an incredible film coming up. I’m not going to give you the name right now because I don’t want you to all go crazy.”
The appearance of Stallone, who thanked attendees for their support of 2015 hit Creed, was one of several high-profile talent to take the stage in a pure statement of intent by Bob Simonds’ fledgling studio.
Chairman and CEO Simonds himself kicked off the session alongside Stx Entertainment president Sophie Watts.

Stx president expects Kosse to have a team of at least 24 staff in place by mid-2017; UK and international distribution plans underway.
The appointment of Film4 boss David Kosse to president of Stx Entertainment’s international division has taken the UK industry by surprise.
However, the move is in keeping with the ambition and pace of emerging powerhouse Stx.
According to Stx Entertainment president Sophie Watts, the fast-growing mini-studio - which has been targeting an aggressive international growth strategy - views Kosse as one of the key linchpins for shaping those plans going forward.
Under Kosse’s stewardship, the company’s new London-based international division will identify and act on global opportunities for development, production and distribution of Stx’s film and TV content.
“In terms of production and distribution, everything international outside of domestic will be centralised under David Kosse,” Watts told Screen.

The actress, who most recently starred in Billy Ray‘s “Secret in Their Eyes,” will produce through her Red Om banner, alongside partners Lisa Gillan and Marisa Yeres Gill. What's new or newish for home viewing? Let's see... It's been two release weeks for Oscar contenders. Several of them now available for rentals and sales hot off their Oscar wins.
• Creed. See why we all fussed about it and why so many were rooting for Sly (who lost in one of many surprises Sunday night) despite an unspectacular career. That's the German cover to the left. I include it because it's intereting to note that overseas they have to mention Rocky in the title somehow "Rocky's Legacy," not trusting that just Creed would do it.
• The Danish Girl. See why Vikander won the Oscar. (Hint: Huge leading role and she's playing a Long Suffering Wife, in short Oscar's two favorite things in the Supporting Actress category)
• Fargo Year Two - I hear it's good. Why am I still resisting?
• The Good Dinosaur - Tim was relatively kind in his review.

Satirising the Benefits Street stereotype of low-income Britain is asking for trouble, but Baron Cohen doubles down on the offensiveness and just about gets away with it. Middling buddy-action comedy is a given when his lager-swilling geezer reunites with his super-spy brother, but there’s enough slapstick absurdity and gross-out invention to break down even the sternest resistance.
