This article contains mild spoilers for "Megalopolis" and "Joker: Folie à Deux."
The film industry has just experienced what seems to me an unprecedented two week span of outrageous misfortune. If we trust the high end of their estimated budgets, Francis Ford Coppola's "Megalopolis" and Todd Phillips' "Joker: Folie à Deux" combined to gross a mere $44 million on exorbitant budgets totaling $344 million.
On the surface, "Megalopolis" would appear to be the bigger disaster; now in its second weekend, the $136 million production has amassed only a paltry $6 million. Granted, Coppola sold his Sonoma Country wineries and borrowed against his new ownership stake in the company that absorbed them to personally finance his physically and intellectually ambitious epic. It's not my money, so I don't care to discuss the wisdom of Coppola's investment; what matters to me is that a massive, star-studded film made without the support of a firmly established...

In 2007, Mihai Malaimare Jr. was a 29-year-old cinematographer working in Romania when he got his filmmaking dream job: shooting “Youth Without Youth” for Francis Ford Coppola as Coppola returned to the director’s chair for the first time in 10 years. Coppola wanted to reinvent himself and was looking for a partner who wouldn’t be afraid of trying new things, and in Malaimare, he found a willing and eager co-conspirator. “Even when he had what I thought was a crazy idea, I thought, ‘Well, it’s Francis Coppola so I better try it,'” Malaimare told IndieWire. “Then you try it and realize how much better the scene looks.”
Malaimare became Coppola’s cinematographer of choice on the movies that followed: “Tetro,” “Twixt,” and now “Megalopolis,” all of them self-financed experiments with which Coppola has attempted to find his own unique style after over 60 years of filmmaking. On “Megalopolis,” Coppola...

One of the most controversial movies of the year is certainly Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis. Not only did Coppola spend decades putting together his futuristic fable, but he also sunk a chunk of his personal fortune into the $100 million-plus epic, only to have it met with jeers from many (but not all) critics following its screenings at Cannes, TIFF and more.
To be sure, this isn’t even close to the first time Coppola’s flirted with disaster as a filmmaker. While The Godfather 1 & 2, The Conversation and Apocalypse Now are rightly regarded as all-timers, Coppola had a massive flop with One from the Heart, a movie that plunged him into bankruptcy, as well as The Cotton Club (which I kinda like), Tucker, Jack, Twixt, and more than a few others.
Over on Rotten Tomatoes, Megalopolis has split critics right down the middle, earning a 50% Tomato-meter score, while the audience...

October 25 will mark 62 years since the release of the first film directed by Francis Ford Coppola: “Come on Out” (later retitled “Tonight for Sure”), a re-edited feature version of three different shorter nudie films he made while a film student at UCLA. It debuted in 1962, right in the middle of the Cuban missile crisis.
With “Megalopolis” opening, he likely has the longest feature film directorial career ever, ahead of Manoel de Oliveira (61 years), Jean-Luc Godard (58), Jerzy Skolimowsky (58), and Frederick Wiseman (56). Clint Eastwood, whose latest film “Juror #2” premieres next month, spans a mere 53 as a director.
To sustain a career that long necessitates a lot of success, which Coppola has had, led by “The Godfather.” But it has been a perilous journey, elongated (“Megalopolis” the most extreme) by his willingness to spend money to keep directing. Of note, his last studio-financed film was “The Rainmaker,” 27 years — and nearly half his career — ago.

The cinematic event of the year is finally upon us now that Francis Ford Coppola's (presumable) swan song "Megalopolis" is playing in theaters, although the overall reactions couldn't be more mixed. In terms of pure drama, the months-long lead up to its release might go down as something just as shocking and over the top as the film itself has been described. Long before the general public ever set eyes upon this passion project about the rise and fall of an empire, the internet has been packed with headlines about behind-the-scenes troubles, alleged sexual harassment, and even a bizarre controversy resulting from AI-generated review pull-quotes.
It's been a wild saga to get to this point, and that's without even getting into the actual reviews of the film. /Film's Chris Evangelista ended up more on the mixed-positive side of the debate in his "Megalopolis" review, calling it a "sprawling, confusing,...

As ambitious as Megalopolis is, one factor that Francis Ford Coppola wanted to push even further was the fact that he included a scene that featured a “live theater” component in which a person from the audience would stand in front of the screen and briefly interact with Adam Driver‘s character on screen. Coppola instituted this unique fourth wall-break at the Cannes screenings and certain IMAX presentations have also played out the scene with a microphone set up at the foot of the screen and the picture shrinking to a size so that Driver’s character can make somewhat eye contact with the person in the theater.
Obviously, it would be a monumental task for every single theater screening to incorporate a plant in the audience to bring this moment to life, but IndieWire reports that over 20 markets in North America will feature this live participant component to the film.

While “Megalopolis” was in pre-production in 2021, Francis Ford Coppola presented Amazon with a unique idea: the director asked if the company would create a customized version of Alexa to be used in specific theaters. As Coppola told The Telegraph in a new interview, audiences would have the opportunity to ask Adam Driver’s character a question about what had transpired in the movie so far — and Alexa would choose the most relevant answer from a pre-approved list.
“Imagine!” Coppola said. “You could see ‘Megalopolis’ five times in its opening week and it would be different each time! It would have been the future of the movies and ancient theater rolled into one!”
Unfortunately, things didn’t pan out due to layoffs at Amazon that resulted in thousands of jobs cut from the Alexa team, including those working on the project for “Megalopolis.” Coppola didn’t plan to move forward with...

Francis Ford Coppola made the shocking decision to fund his project Megalopolis from his own pocket through his winery. The veteran filmmaker has been trying to get the film off the ground for decades, but it has been delayed many times due to revisions and false starts.

After selling a part of his winery estate, he was able to finance the movie. It was a passion project that started when he was doing 1979’s Apocalypse Now. Its ambitious plot is its selling point, but the changes in his life, according to Coppola, were what drove him to bring it finally to the screen.

Following its recent debacle involving fabricated trailer quotes, Lionsgate’s Francis Ford Coppola epic Megalopolis has cut ties with marketing consultant Eddie Egan, sources have confirmed to Deadline.

Francis Ford Coppola's Megalopolis has been accused of fabricating fake reviews from legendary film critics for its recent trailer, leading to the new preview being removed from online platforms. Megalopolis is a passion project that Coppola funded himself, and perhaps it was therefore expected that a lot of critics would not be on the same wavelength as the director. When making its debut at the Cannes Film Festival, the premiere immediately led to a mixed reception and that, in turn, instigated a strange response via the latest trailer.
Costing over $100 million and set for a September 27, 2024 release date, the new trailer for the film begins with a series of written quotes that were supposedly written by great critics such as Pauline Kael, Andrew Sarris, and Rogert Ebert about Coppola's greatest movies such as The Godfather and Apocalypse Now. In a highly unusual move, Lionsgate is pulling its new trailer for Megalopolis, unveiled early this morning.
The decision comes following controversy over critic quotes featured in the trailer, which digging by Vulture and other outlets revealed to be fabricated.
“Lionsgate is immediately recalling our trailer for Megalopolis,” said a spokesperson for the studio. “We offer our sincere apologies to the critics involved and to Francis Ford Coppola and American Zoetrope for this inexcusable error in our vetting process. We screwed up. We are sorry.”
The quotes featured in the Megalopolis trailer highlight previous “criticisms” of Coppola’s now-iconic works, such as The Godfather and Apocalypse Now, by such famed critics as The New Yorker’s Pauline Kael and Village Voice’s Andrew Sarris. With reference to The Godfather, for instance, Kael is quoted as calling the film “diminished by its artsiness,” with Sarris referring to it as a “sloppy self-indulgent movie.

Megalopolis, Francis Ford Coppola's passion project, has a mixed reception but benefits from an R-rating, following the success of his previous R-rated films. The R-rating allows Coppola to maintain full creative control and explore the film's unique, original world, potentially attracting viewers who appreciate its darkness and oddities. Megalopolis' R-rating may limit its box office potential by excluding younger audiences, but it could also pique the interest of adult viewers.
Francis Ford Coppola's passion project, Megalopolis, is set to be released this year, and though the movie's reactions are mixed, one trend of the film makes it undoubtedly better. Since the 1960s and '70s, Francis Ford Coppola's movies have been a staple of Hollywood, including iconic films like The Godfather trilogy and Apocalypse Now. Because of this, each time he debuts a new project, it is highly anticipated. Notably, he hasn't released a movie since 2013's Twixt. However,...

Francis Ford Coppola has done the seemingly impossible and secured North American distribution for his ambitious "Megalopolis." The film, which Coppola self-financed, wrote, directed, and produced, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May, but hadn't secured a North American distributor by the end of the event. Now, however, Lionsgate Studios has confirmed that it will distribute "Megalopolis" in the U.S. and Canada.
IMAX already confirmed it would show the $120 million feature, and the film had previously secured several international distribution deals. But Coppola has now secured full theatrical distribution in the U.S. and Canada too, ensuring the masses will be able to witness a film that The Telegraph desribed as "'Succession' crossed with 'Batman Forever' and a lava lamp." Lionsgate confirmed it plans to release the film theatrically on September 27, 2024, and that it will also oversee the film's distribution on home entertainment platforms.

The Rainmaker TV show could redeem Coppola's overlooked classic, even if it flops, by driving viewers to the disregarded film. Quality of the reboot may hinge on the talent of the cast, with big shoes to fill following performances by Damon and DeVito. The reboot will stick closely to Grisham's novel and Coppola's film, promising to be a legal drama with thriller elements.
The upcoming television reboot of Francis Ford Coppola's The Rainmaker can redeem the film's poor box office performance from 1997. The Rainmaker is arguably one of Coppola's most overlooked films even though it received overwhelmingly positive reviews, earning a Rotten Tomatoes score of 82%. It goes without saying that Francis Ford Coppola is one of the greatest filmmakers of all-time. His run of The Godfather, The Conversation, The Godfather: Part II, and Apocalypse Now was so successful that it ensured him a place in cinematic history forever, regardless of what he chose to do for the rest of his career. While Coppolas subsequent work was impressively no less ambitious, it was far less commercially successful, leading to significant gaps within his filmography. The critically derided 2011 film Twixt brought his career to an abrupt halt, but just before that, Coppola delivered one of his most personal films with the 2009 drama Tetro.

Above: 1980 Japanese poster for Apocalypse Now. Design by Eiko Ishioka, artwork by Haruo Takino. With Francis Ford Coppola’s long-gestated Megalopolis having premiered yesterday at Cannes, it's a good time to look back at the posters from his 60-year-long career. The only problem is that many posters for his films are either too well known or nothing to write home about. Like Coppola’s career itself, there are peaks and valleys—one of my very first posts for Notebook, almost exactly fifteen years ago, was about the gorgeous design for The Rain People (1969)—but a career retrospective of his posters seems like it might result in less than the sum of its parts. Yet of all his posters there are three rare Japanese designs that have always stood out as utterly extraordinary: two for Apocalypse Now (1979) and one for Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992).I’ve always seen these posters attributed to Eiko Ishioka,...

Francis Ford Coppola shared his thoughts on the current studio system during the Cannes Film Festival press conference for his self-financed epic “Megalopolis,” saying that they might not be around much longer.

The two hour and 20 minute dystopian drama certainly divided the audience at the Cannes Film Festival on Thursday night with its collision course of shocking scenes: a doctored sex tape featuring Adam Driver, Shia Labeouf in drag playing a Trumpian figure and Aubrey Plaza dominating her way through a slew of men.
But there was still a huge amount of respect for iconic director Coppola, who received a four-minute standing ovation upon entering the room. After the credits rolled — which included a tribute to his late wife Eleanor — and the standing ovation began, Coppola hugged Driver and Giancarlo Esposito and got emotional as he made a speech dedicating the film to hope and family.
“Thank you all so much. It is so impossible to find words to tell you how I feel,” Coppola said, then introducing his family members in the audience.

Francis Ford Coppola has revealed the first look at Megalopolis, his self-funded sci-fi epic starring Adam Driver, Giancarlo Esposito, Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza, Shia Labeouf, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Talia Shire, Jason Schwartzman, Kathryn Hunter, Grace VanderWaal, Chloe Fineman, James Remar, D.B. Sweeney, and Dustin Hoffman.
A project decades in the making, Coppola financed much of the $120 million film himself. The film is set to premiere at Cannes in May, but has yet to secure a US release.
Megalopolis is described as “a Roman Epic fable set in an imagined Modern America. The City of New Rome must change, causing conflict between Cesar Catilina, a genius artist who seeks to leap into a utopian, idealistic future, and his opposition, Mayor Franklyn Cicero, who remains committed to a regressive status quo, perpetuating greed, special interests, and partisan warfare. When most cinephiles think of Francis Ford Coppola, they think of his miracle run in the 1970s. During that decade, he directed four films, all of them five-star masterpieces: The Godfather, The Conversation, The Godfather, Part II, and Apocalypse Now. Or they think of embarrassments from his for-hire period, including the Robin Williams weepy Jack. Yet those five films hardly encapsulate the entire career of Francis Ford Coppola, which will likely end with the upcoming Megalopolis. Instead the best indication of Coppola as an artist and filmmaker might be found in the most recent movies he’s made, with Coppola having released three self-produced and self-financed pictures every two years between 2007 and 2011: Youth Without Youth, Twixt, and Tetro.
Although they vary in quality, and none top his work from the ’70s, this independent trio captures the experimental and romantic heart that lies at the center of Coppola’s overall oeuvre.

Are you ready for the return of the king? It's been 13 years since Francis Ford Coppola helmed a feature film — that would be 2011's weird horror flick "Twixt" — and now he's back in the director's chair to realize his dream project. In the 1980s, Coppola started writing "Megalopolis," an epic, sprawling drama that could very well be his biggest movie ever. He would tinker with the work over the years and finally start shooting second unit footage in 2001.
And then disaster struck, literally. The film's script dealt with the aftermath of a disaster that befalls New York City, and just as Coppola was gearing up to get "Megalopolis" off the ground, the 9/11 attacks changed everything. Realizing that no one at the time would be in the mood to watch a post-disaster movie set in New York, Coppola shelved the project — but he never forgot about it.

Francis Ford Coppola's Megalopolis is a sci-fi passion project that resembles George Lucas' Star Wars prequels, exploring a utopian NYC rebuilt after a disaster. Like Lucas, Coppola has embraced new technology in filmmaking, using innovative techniques to create his ambitious epic on LED stages. Megalopolis faces divisive reactions, with some calling it bizarre, hinting at its potential to spark mixed opinions like the Star Wars prequels.
Francis Ford Coppolas new science fiction epic Megalopolis looks like George Lucas long-time friend and former producing partner has finally made his own Star Wars movie. Megalopolis is Coppolas first film since 2011s Twixt. Its a passion project that hes been dreaming about since the 1970s, and after putting up $120 million of his own money, the Apocalypse Now director has finally made this ambitious project a reality. Megalopolis revolves around an idealistic architect who sets out to rebuild New York City after its wiped out by a disaster.

While Hollywood has several incredible horror features already, a yet-to-be-released horror movie promises no less than a thrilling horror experience by taping into the essence of Tom Cruise’s one of the most iconic movies. Directed, written, and co-produced by Zach Cregger, Weapons, is being described as tonally similar to Cruise’s 1999 drama film Magnolia.
Tom Cruise starter Magnolia (1999)
Although, the movie’s prospects certainly seem high already, what makes it even more thrilling is that similar to Cruise’s epic, Weapons too appears to be eyeing an incredible cast. After roping in the likes of Josh Brolin and Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich is the newest edition to the cast.

The 2024 Cannes Film Festival lineup was finally revealed at the sliver of dawn on Thursday, April 11. Festival director Thierry Frémaux and president Iris Knobloch unveiled this year’s crop of films across the many sections, from the Competition to Un Certain Regard, during a press conference beginning at 5 a.m. Et. See the full lineup below.
The 77th edition of Cannes comes to the Côte d’Azur May 14 through 25, and a few titles were already confirmed to be in the mix. There’s Francis Ford Coppola’s self-funded epic “Megalopolis,” which has already screened for a rarified few in the United States to much awe and speculation over what distributor might take on Coppola’s experimental vision. For his first feature since 2011’s “Twixt,” Coppola gathered a cast including Adam Driver, Nathalie Emmanuel, Shia Labeouf, Giancarlo Esposito, Aubrey Plaza, and Jason Schwartzman for a sci-fi vision of a ruined NYC-like metropolis.

After 13 years, legendary Oscar-winner Francis Ford Coppola is seemingly back with a new movie, Megalopolis, which is slated to be released in late 2024, although that could still be pushed back. After a controversial outing with 2011’s Twixt, Coppola has finished his new movie, a sci-fi epic with an ensemble cast, which has been screened for distributors in the United States. As of the time of writing, not much is known about the movie, but Deadline reports that the film’s runtime is 2 hours and 13 minutes, and that is without the credits, but as Mark Fleming Jr. writes, the runtime seems “remarkably brief,” which indicates that Coppola has indeed made a great movie.

Will Coppola's first sci-fi movie inspire success or be another flop like his recent films? Despite doubts, Driver's endorsement and Coppola's determination suggest Megalopolis could be a game-changer. With a self-funded budget and a strong ensemble cast, Megalopolis has potential to recapture Coppola's past magic.
Although Francis Ford Coppola's upcoming $120 million sci-fi movie, Megalopolis, features an ensemble cast and direction from the legendary filmmaker, his body of work from the 21st Century puts the upcoming sci-fi's success into question. Even with Adam Driver promoting Megalopolis, Coppola's absence from the film industry combined with the lukewarm-at-best reception of his more recent efforts makes the critical and commercial success of his upcoming Megalopolis less likely. Furthermore, Megalopolis will be Coppola's first sci-fi movie, which also makes the movie's margin for error far wider than if it were a crime or war drama.

Megalopolis is a wild, visionary love story with Adam Driver as Caesar, resembling Francis Ford Coppola's ideals. The film explores competing ideologies in rebuilding New York as a utopia post-disaster, led by a visionary architect. Francis Ford Coppola's long-awaited dream project, Megalopolis, features an all-star cast and is set for an IMAX release in Fall 2024.
As one of the stars of Francis Ford Coppola's anticipated epic Megalopolis, Adam Driver knows the details surrounding the mysterious sci-fi film. But don't expect him to give anything away, as his description of the film may lead to more confusion than clarity. During an interview with The Face, Driver was asked what information he could share about Megalopolis. He described the film as "kind of undefinable" but added that the description would make sense after viewing the movie.
"It's kind of undefinable, which feels very general until you watch the movie. Then my answer will be perfect.

If you could sit down with Francis Ford Coppola – one of the greatest titans and entrepreneurs in movie history – what would you ask him? His best advice for a young filmmaker? His favorite movies? Perhaps his go-to ice cream flavor? Well, the director had all that and more to share during a recent Instagram Ama session; yes, Coppola has Instagram, and yes, you can ask him anything.
First and foremost, during the Ama, Coppola was asked what his favorite movies of his daughter Sofia’s were, in which he rattled off her debut, 1999’s Virgin Suicides, 2003’s Lost in Translation, 2006’s Marie Antoinette, and 2010’s Somewhere. That’s half of her filmography – Francis is such a dad! As for his own pictures, Coppola didn’t cite The Godfather or Apocalypse Now or Jack but rather 1983’s Rumble Fish, his second S.E. Megalopolis risks repeating the failure of Driver's last sci-fi movie, 65, due to Coppola's recent lack of quality films.
