John Singleton is poised to be the next filmmaker to make the leap to television, as FX has picked up the pilot for Snowfall, a show co-created by Singleton. The press release had this summary of the series.
Los Angeles 1981. A storm is coming and its name is cocaine. Snowfall is a one-hour drama set against the infancy of the crack cocaine epidemic and its ultimate radical impact on the culture as we know it. The story follows three characters on a violent collision course: Franklin Saint, young street entrepreneur on a quest for power; Gustavo Zapata, a Mexican wrestler turned gangster in search of his American dream; and Logan Miller, a prominent family’s “black sheep” desperate to escape his father’s shadow.
Singleton will also direct the pilot.

“We had some really great footage that we just couldn’t include because it didn’t work with the story. A lot of things felt out, a lot of characters," Johnny Knoxville said last year about material cut from the hit "Bad Grandpa." "Spike Jonze played an old lady named Gloria. We had really funny stuff with Gloria but we couldn’t use it. Same with Catherine Keener, she played my wife and we couldn’t use that. There’s so much on the DVD and we are also doing a whole separate release next year with all the bits and how we made the movie, but I’m not sure how are we going to call it. We usually do 'Jackass 2.5' or 'Jackass 3.5,' so it might be 'Bad Grandpa .5.' ” And well, true to his word, "Bad Grandpa .5" is coming, and yes, Spike Jonze...

Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa was one of last year's big surprise hits, coming out of nowhere to dominate the box office. On its way to over $100 million, the comedy is coming home on Blu-ray January 28th. To usher in the release, we caught up with director Jeff Tremaine, the master chef behind all of the Jackass movies. He let us in on the making of the film itself, some of the challenges it posed and where they plan to go in the future.
Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa is interesting in that it takes a different approach than past films in the Jackass franchise. It sets up a clear narrative, with Johnny Knoxville never breaking character as the 86 year-old Irving Zisman, though most of the interactions seen in the film between him, his on-screen grandson Billy (played by the greatest child actor of his time Jackson Nicoll) and the people around them are completely real.

After Jackass 3D (and its pseudo-sequel Jackass 3.5 compiled of unused material) and the tragically unfortunate death of celebrated Jackass stunt performer Ryan Dunn, it went up in the air regarding what was next for the crew of professional pranksters. Would Jackass 3 live on as their swan song? Would they ever reunite one last time for 90 minutes of juvenile yet irresistible humor?
With Bad Grandpa we sort of have an answer, as it takes a popular sketch character from the Jackass heritage and creates a hidden camera film around a very basic story. Hey, it worked for Sacha Baron Cohen with Borat (and to a lesser extent with Bruno) so I see no harm in the Jackass crew taking a stab at it. If anything the results are the most inspired and refreshing series of gags in years from the group and a step in a direction ripe with further potential.

"X-Men" spinoff "The Wolverine" was #1 at the box office last weekend, so we know spinoffs can mean big business (not so much the unfairly maligned Elektra, of course).
Two years after "Jackass 3.5," the Jackass crew provides us with a spinoff film starring beloved 86 year-old grandpa Irving Zisman. Of course, Zisman is actually Johnny Knoxville under some Six Flags commercial style old-man makeup. "Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa" promises to mix secret-camera footage with a fictitious narrative about Zisman on a road trip with his 8 year-old grandson, Billy (Jackson Nicoll).
The brand new trailer suggests the movie will mine hilarity from child endangerment and the general awkwardness of strangers, plus the usual rough-and-tumble pratfalls and whatnot.
All of this got us to wondering: how close to 86 is Knoxville these days? Turns out he's 42! (Hey, Johnny Depp is 50.) "Knoxville" isn't his real name (his birth certificate says Philip John Clapp), but you probably knew that already.

Even after "Jackass 3D" took in $170 million, it seemed like the extra footage jambalaya that was the straight-to-dvd "Jackass 3.5" might the final entry in the "Jackass" franchise, especially after the tragic death of cast member Ryan Dunn. Maybe not. In fact, it looks like the "Jackass" gang could preparing another installment of pranks, stunts, and general testicle-abuse.
Paramount hasn't announced another sequel, per se, but are apparently registering several domain names for a sequel that will apparently named "Jackass 4: Bad Grandpa." While none of the websites are live, the studio has registered names like "badgrampa-movie.com," "jackass4badgrampa.com," "jackass4badgrampamovie.com," "jackass4badgrandpa.com," "jackass4badgrandpamovie.com" and so on covering pretty much every conceivable combinatoion. This is sad. I was just watching "Jackass 3.5" last night, and I woke up to this horrible news. "Jackass" star Ryan Dunn died early Monday morning in a car crash. He was 34.
According to reports, Dunn and another passenger died at 2:30 in the morning in West Goshen, Pennsylvania. The police report revealed that Dunn, driving a 2007 Porsche 911 GT3, slammed into a tree. (Read the press release from West Goshen Police Department right here via Hollywood Reporter)
Hours before the crash, Dunn posted a photo of himself drinking. (Check out the picture right here)
I had the privilege of meeting Dunn last year for the "Jackass 3D" junket. He was very sweet in person -- which makes this horrible news of his death much sadder :sad
Farewell Mr. Dunn, thanks for the laughs!

Think what you will of the "Jackass" series, but they are a surefire success at the box-office. A shameless display of bodily abuse that audiences eat up helping after helping. So much so that Paramount pumps out straight-to-dvd releases like "Jackass 3.5" between films in order to satisfy the craving of eager fans.
You would be hard-pressed to find someone who hasn't at least gotten one hearty chuckle from the series. With that said, we regret to inform fans of the series that one of the its stars Ryan Dunn was the victim of a fatal car crash this morning.
Authorities are pointing to alcohol as being a big factor in the death as he posted a picture of himself drinking on Twitter a few hours before the crash. There are pictures of the wreck and other things of that nature floating around the internet.

It’s just been announced that Jackass star Ryan Dunn has sadly passed away in a car accident.
Best known for his high-wire pranks and stunts in the hit series Jackass, actor, writer and performer Ryan Dunn has passed away, we’re sad to announce. Dunn died just nine days after his 34th birthday, and just one week after the UK DVD release of his latest feature, Jackass 3.5.
Dunn was reportedly killed when a car he was travelling in crashed in the West Goshen Township area of Pennsylvania. A passenger in the car was also killed. It hasn’t yet been confirmed who was driving at the time of the accident.
While Dunn had previously appeared in the low budget 1997 film Invader, it was the MTV series Jackass that propelled him and his co-stars to worldwide fame, and its mixture of dangerous practical jokes and stunts inspired a number of copycat TV shows.

We've got aliens, infidelity and cross-dressing cops in this week's DVD and Blu-ray releases, but trust me, it's not as exciting as it sounds. The Stars: Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard

The Buzz: Just slightly to the right of the “kill me now” column (see Mr. Popper’s Penguins) lies DC’s feeble attempt to answer Marvel’s mighty Thor. I am stupefied at how nerdy Reynolds looks throughout all of The Green Lantern’s marketing efforts. I can’t get over it really, and I’ve never really enjoyed Reynolds at all. Jackass films aren’t made with a shooting script and meticulous camera work. The process involves a lot of trial and error, and so for every movie, it seems there’s enough footage to make a number of films. And where the theatrical Jackass 3-D focuses on the stuff that went great, Jackass 3.5 offers the stunts that were too stupid, too lame, too familiar, or too dangerous to make the theatrical release. It’s the whole gang: Johnny Knoxville, Steve-o, Bam Margera, Ryan Dunn, Chris Pontius, Ehren McGhehey, Dave England, Preston Lacy and Wee-Man. And they’re there to celebrate their failures. Check out our review of the Blu-ray after the jump. As a fan, what I like or find fascinating about these .5 Jackass films is that by collecting all the bits that don’t work, it makes you strangely sympathetic to the film. In some cases the bits...

Jackass 3.5 Review
Premiering on MTV a few days ago was Jackass 3.5, the next piece in this epic saga of pranks, stunts and gags. Anyone familiar with Jackass 2.5 should feel right at home here. Jackass 3.5 is a sequel to Jackass 3D. The film is made up of footage that was shot for the film but never made it into the final cut, unused footage if you will. Star Johnny Knoxville originally said that they shot two movies worth of material, and it looks like he was right. With Jackass 3.5 we get a full fledged sequel that is equally as good as its predecessor and just as funny.

Because many of you have already seen these movies, and because the readers often value the Pajiba community's opinions as much as the critics, I encourage you all to weigh in with your own opinions in the comments, particularly of the Must See Titles on Netflix Instant.
And before we get into this week's regular DVD releases, we will start with those must-see titles that just hit Instant Netflix. The first is Harry Brown, which Prisco went apeshit for last year: "There's just one man, upset that his friend was murdered, taking out the trash. And goddamn is it fun to watch ... Michael Caine is simply awesome as Harry Brown. You never once doubt his character. There's more depth in...

The Film:
Like the previous films, with Jackass 3D (review here) director Jeff Tremaine and the Jackasses filmed a slew of gags, and with some much left on the cutting room floor after Jackass 3D was released, Paramount naturally crafted an entire new film in Jackass 3.5. While we see a ton of new stunts, a neat thing about 3.5 is that is doesn’t wholly feel like a new film, but feels like a denouement to Jackass 3D, something I called “a side-splitting hilarious coda to a generational gift from a few lovable idiots that balked at the notion that not everyone can keep their fifteen minutes of fame.”
While there’s plenty of great moments, the film is structured differently than most Jackass films, in where the cast and crew are candidly interviewed in-between vintages about the dangerous world of filming a Jackass movie. I liked this structure, but...

Battle: Los Angeles
There was a lot to like here: solid cast, great non-stop action, cool aliens, gritty cinematography, and yet, it’s all just overkill. Characters are one-dimensional and for all of that non-stop action, it’s a CGI bludgeoning that gets old fast. It’s Black Hawk Down meets ID4 but isn’t as cool as that sounds. (Formats: Blu-ray/DVD) Jon says: Rent Donny says: Buy

Last week there were some Blu-ray deals to note and this week there are a couple more. Here's a list of some I found particularly intriguing: The Godfather - The Coppola Restoration Giftset [Blu-ray] - $49.99 GoodFellas [Blu-ray] - $10.49 The Departed [Blu-ray] - $9.29 True Grit [Blu-ray] - $14.99 The Dark Knight [Blu-ray] - $10.99 Once Upon a Time in the West [Blu-ray] - $10.49 Avatar (3-Disc Extended Collector's Edition) [Blu-ray] - $19.99 With Father's Day coming up it only makes sense that these titles are priced to move, and with the sale items out of the way, let's have a look at this week's new crop.
Battle: Los Angeles Kevin just wrote up an entertaining review for this Blu-ray, which you can read right here. After reading it I was trying to figure out how his thoughts compared to mine when I gave the film a "C+" in my review back...

It’s another jam-packed week of DVD and Blu-ray releases, here’s the rundown of what’s available to buy from today, June 13th 2011.
Paul (DVD/Blu-ray)
For the past 60 years, an alien named Paul (voiced by Seth Rogen) has been hanging out at a top-secret military base. For reasons unknown, the space-traveling smart ass decides to escape the compound and hop on the first vehicle out of town-a rented Rv containing Earthlings Graeme Willy (Simon Pegg) and Clive Gollings (Nick Frost). Chased by federal agents and the fanatical father of a young woman that they accidentally kidnap, Graeme and Clive hatch a fumbling escape plan to return Paul to his mother ship. And as two nerds struggle to help, one little green man might just take his fellow outcasts from misfits to intergalactic heroes… Review.

If Jackass 3D was a bit too scatological for your tastes and you wish they’d get back to just launching one another off ramps or random crotch shots then you’ll find Jackass 3.5 much more satisfying. One of the series’ greatest drawbacks is that a Jackass movie will just cut from one stunt to the next and consequently the guys become little more than crash dummies and it’s easy to think of them as disposable entities. Jackass 3.5 solves this by being much more of a reflective piece with the guys you love seeing devastated talking about their favorite memories, how the stunts came to them, and which ones they actually fear doing.

I’ve decided to push all the Tracy Morgan news into a special edition section of Weekend Meme on page two. Feel free to catch up there.
As I write this, we’re less than 24 hours from the start of the Tony Awards, and our man Neil Patrick Harris has been making the interview circuit. He’s promising the “edgiest Tony’s yet” but much of that seems to depend on whether the 14-time nominated The Book of Mormon can get a song past the censors. As for Nph, he’s not going to make himself the center of the show, and you won’t see him in Spider-Man spandex. Spoilsport. Obviously, I’ll be tweet-snarking the whole thing live.
The Seattle Mariners have become the 4,785,987th baseball team to announce an It Gets Better video. Actually, I’m really happy to see them jump into the project, but I...

The age of modern warfare is clearly leading to innovative and bizarre developments in weaponry. A new, previously unreleased clip from the DVD 'Jackass 3.5' (out on June 14) has wandered its way onto the Internet, ready to introduce the world to a bawdy bit of ordnance referred to as the Dildo Launcher. And if you thought that the Jackass crew would be testing out the the device without employing some dude's bare buttocks as a target, you're clearly among the uninitiated. Has the Pentagon been informed of this? Check out the video...

Getty Jeff Tremaine and Johnny Knoxville
“Genius-level stupidity” may seem like an oxymoron, but if anything deserves that description, it’s the adventures of the cast of “Jackass.” After starting small on MTV with gross-out gags and candid-camera stunts, Jeff Tremaine and his group of guinea pigs have steadily built an empire built on pain, suffering and a whole lot of poop. Last year Tremaine and co. released “Jackass 3D” in theaters to considerable box office success; in 2011, they’re...

Being a "Jackass" ain't easy. You have to endure overwhelmingly powerful blasts from a jet engine, playing tether ball with a beehive, jumping ravines on a bicycle — not to mention going for a bungee jump in a port-o-potty filled with you know what.
Yeah, it's pretty rough stuff. Accidents happen. People get hurt. Like Johnny Knoxville in this exclusive clip from the upcoming "Jackass 3.5: The Unrated Movie," hitting Blu-ray and DVD this Tuesday (June 14). There's over 30 minutes of brand new footage on the home video release, including this little scene where Johnny gets in a bit over his head. Check it out for yourself.

Jackass is a phenomenon, each film less of a concept and more a brand name. As a film critic, I adore these documentaries. And it took me the longest time to reason out why. Jackass is reliable. When I go to see a more conventional film, the trailers promise me one thing, and more often than not, the final product turns out to be well different from the original. But not with Jackass. It's always going to be the same thing: a bunch of juvenile stunt men doing outrageous stunts. Damaging themselves with ramps and bodily functions, taunting and tormenting each other for my devious amusement. Even if I don't find a particular setup entertaining -- like Jackass 3D's fecal volcano -- there's going to be another stunt mere moments away. Deep inside me, in that primal portion of my makeup that will always find farts funny, crouches that...

Ping-pong was at the center of one of "Jackass 3-D"'s most outrageous segments, a bit we can't really go into here for reasons of good taste but which featured Bam Margera getting drilled with ping-pong balls in an unusual fashion. So it's only fitting that we're teaming with Joost to give away a set of paddles and ping-pong balls.

Sure, we've all keeled over in laughter when watching Johnny Knoxville and the rest of the Jackass crew do what they do best (We've also had to avert our eyes a few times). But what's the process like behind all those hilarious and cringe-worthy pranks and stunts? The crew sat down to talk about their latest project, Jackass 3.5, an all-new film specifically for the online world, and revealed the inspiration and philosophy behind causing your friends bodily harm in the name of a good time... Director Jeff Tremaine sums up the basics: "[We ask]: Is there any way this could possibly succeed? If there is, we throw that one away." Simple, yet genius. And naturally, fear plays a big part of...
