Season 23 of American Idol continued the audition phase on Sunday night as judges Carrie Underwood, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan traveled to New York, Los Angeles, and Nashville to find music's next superstar. The two-hour episode aired Sunday, March 23 (8 p.m. Et/Pt) with Ryan Seacrest hosting.
The night's most memorable moment belonged to Freddie McClendon, the 19-year-old son of Davis McClendon, a 46-year-old father of three who was murdered in 2023. "One of my favorite memories — I was around 15 years old and my dad took me to Nashville for the first time," Freddie said prior to his audition. "Seeing Music City and Broadway — he said, 'You know Freddie, that's gonna be you one day.' It's happening today!"
"I've been writing music since I was a freshman in high school," he told the judges. "I really started doing it seriously about a year ago when my dad passed away. My...

The reality TV shows of the early 2000s seemed to test the waters of what was appropriate television. There were bizarre dating shows like Playing It Straight, Boy Meets Boy, and I Wanna Marry 'Harry.'" Unfortunately, there were also reality shows that exploited and shamed participants, like Average Joe and Are You Hot?
What fans of reality TV of the 2000s may also remember are the controversial makeover programs that aired. These makeover shows glorified plastic surgery and, instead of focusing on helping a woman's internal struggles, it was all about physically altering their outer appearance to the extreme. This sadly led women to believe they needed to go under the knife to feel "beautiful," but it was just all so wrong.

Exclusive: Netflix on Monday morning revealed Ok, Mister as the title of its new comedy special from Deon Cole, teased back in May, announcing that it’ll premiere globally on the streamer on September 17.
Ok, Mister is Cole’s third special for Netflix on the heels of Charleen’s Boy and Cole Hearted, which were respectively released in 2022 and 2019. Ryan Polito directed the special, for which Cole, Kirsten Ames and John Irwin served as executive producers. Irwin Entertainment was the production company. Check out a sneak peek above.

And when Joe comes to, there’s a ruthless gangster in his face demanding the money he says Joe’s father owes him … or else.

Dodgeball's success was a surprise, beating out a Spielberg film at the box office. The film's humor and unique spirit helped it overcome obstacles during production. Dodgeball's blend of satire and heart make it a lasting comedy classic.
2004's Dodgeball remains a classic of early 21st-century comedy, thanks to a strong concept and a great ensemble cast. It parodies sports underdog movies and mines big laughs simply by putting grown adults in the middle of a sport largely associated with children. It follows another group of scruffy underdogs who enter the national dodgeball championship in an effort to save their beloved gym with the prize money. The film made a big splash with critics and grossed a hefty profit on a comparatively small budget. A Dodgeball sequel was announced in 2023, though there is no further word on its status as of this writing.

Reality TV shows like Kid Nation, Are You Hot?, and Average Joe would face major backlash for exploiting and shaming participants today. Programs like I Wanna Marry "Harry", The Swan, and Toddlers & Tiaras are criticized for promoting unrealistic beauty standards and pressuring children. Playing It Straight and Boy Meets Boy would be deemed insensitive for playing into stereotypes about sexual orientation and deceiving participants.
Fortunately for everyone who works on a reality TV show, the genre tends to have extremely passionate fans. After all, fans like to debate things like who the best reality TV couples are, who the most memorable reality stars are, and what the best reality competition shows are.

Look, there’s no way around this: August is a slow month for TV, and Netflix isn’t any different. Splashy fall TV is right around the corner, but August seems best designed to catch up on some of the best TV of the year so far that you may have missed.
It’s not a total wasteland, however: “Emily in Paris” returns this month for Season 4 Part 1. The internet loves to make fun of it, but the dreamed is truly one of the best brain-dead shows to watch when it’s too hot to do much of anything else. Lily Collins wears the most amazing outfits! There’s lots of kissing! Why do you think you’re better than it?! Much like other recent Netflix hits such as “Bridgerton,” “Emily in Paris” Season 4 will be divided into two parts, with Part 1 dropping August 15 and Part 2 debuting a month later.

It seems inconceivable in an age when every facet of Prince Harry’s celebrity marriage and Shakespearean sibling rivalry is meticulously scrutinized by every man and his corgi, but 10 years ago, there were apparently a dozen young American women who couldn’t pick Prince Harry out of a line-up.
That’s what the 2010s’ most intelligence-insulting reality show “I Wanna Marry Harry” — the lone season of which concluded June 11, 2014 — expected us to believe anyway. Never mind that the self-proclaimed ‘spare’ was then third in line to the throne and, thanks to his penchant for playing strip billiards in Las Vegas hotels, a long-running tabloid favorite. Just recruit a vague posh boy lookalike, dye his hair ginger, and provide a crash course in etiquette and croquet, and voila, no aspiring princess would be any the wiser.

BET wants some Emmys.
In a year where major streamers and legacy networks dominate the Emmy conversations, BET Media Group, which includes BET+ and BET Studios, has had a record-breaking year for its critically acclaimed content, such as Lee Daniels’ racy sitcom “The Ms. Pat Show,” the drama thriller “Average Joe” and the dark comedy “Diarra From Detroit.” All in all, the legacy broadcast media network has submitted in over 35 Primetime Emmy categories, the most in its history.
BET+ surprised many in 2022 and 2023 when it picked up back-to-back nominations for “The Ms. Pat Show” director Mary Lou Belli. Exclusive: BET+ has picked up darkly comedic drama series Average Joe, headlined by Deon Cole, for a second season.
Created by Robb Cullen, Average Joe was released June 26, 2023 to strong reviews (86% on Rotten Tomatoes), quickly becoming the #1 scripted drama series on BET+ in its debut week.
Season 2 is slated to begin production in late 2024 in South Africa. In an unusual move for an ongoing original series on another streamer, Season 1 of Average Joe will be made available on Netflix this summer, sources said. That would give the comedic drama exposure and raise awareness ahead of its second season on BET+.

Blue-collar plumber Joe Washington (Cole) discovers his recently deceased father lived a secret second life and stole millions of dollars from dangerous people just before he died. When an estimated 1,000 international TV buyers descend on Los Angeles for the annual TV event known as the LA Screenings, they will see a contracted market still recovering from the twin Hollywood strikes of last year and, to a somewhat lesser extent, the pandemic.
It kicks off with the LA Screenings Independents, held May 15-17 for smaller studios and distributors at the Fairmont Century Plaza Hotel, which are then followed by screenings at the major studios’ respective lots across May 18-22 where they present their latest shows. They may also host a variety of events for their clients during those days, which may include cocktail receptions and luncheons or dinners with talent and executives.
While stalled projects ramped up as soon as the strikes ended, some delays were inevitable. “A couple of months ago I was wondering if we were going to be entertaining [buyers],” says Lisa Kramer, president, International Content Licensing,...

Comedy films often rely on chaotic humor to entertain viewers, with high energy, absurd characters, and shocking physical comedy. Films like Anchorman, Airplane!, and Dodgeball deliver constant laughter with unforgettable performances from comedy legends like Will Ferrell and Ben Stiller. With hilarious dialogue, ridiculous scenarios, and unforgettable moments, these comedy films are a perfect choice for a night of uncontrollable laughter with friends or a solo movie viewing.
There are tons of great comedy films, but some contain a chaotic energy that makes them wildly entertaining from beginning to end. While some comedies center more on romance or action, others are made purely for constant laughter, with high energy, absurd characters and ideas, and shocking physical comedy. BET+ presents Average Joe, a ten-episode dark comedy thriller that delivers a captivating narrative around Joe Washington, a Pittsburgh-based plumber. The series takes a riveting turn as Joe’s seemingly ordinary life gets a chaotic makeover right after the death of his father, Teddy Washington. However, little did Joe know that his father lived a double life. While masquerading as the regular owner of a truck towing store, Teddy worked as a drug mule for Nicolai Dzhugasvili, one of the most powerful and evil Russian drug dealers.
Average Joe quickly became a fan-favorite comedy thriller, but unfortunately, it concluded as a typical formula thriller with an unnecessarily dragged-out and predictable ending. The open-ended nature of the final scenes might be intentional, possibly to set the stage for a future season. Although the release date for the next season on BET+ is yet unknown, the ending of season 1 offers ample potential...

If you're fresh off that jaw-dropping season of Average Joe, you may enjoy the vibes of Caught Up.
It promises to be a short binge that will make you laugh while contemplating your own love life; there is no judgment here. Trust and believe.
The unofficial King of BET, Tyler Perry, graces us with another one of his productions.
This new dramedy is executive produced by Tyler Perry and comedienne Jasmin Brown, not to be mistaken for Yellowjackets' Jasmin Savoy Brown, for the record.
Jasmin Brown also starred in and...

Average Joe doesn't care much about my well-being now, does it?
I kid, but also not really because the closing minutes of Average Joe Season 1 Episode 10 were jaw-dropping and would have had me clutching my pearls if I owned any.
In a day and age where so many are afraid to take risks when closing out a season, that was far from the case here, as we were left on many a cliffhanger and a deep sorrow when those end credits came rolling around.
Average Joe Season 1 has been building up to the showdown between Nicolai and Joe, as Nicolai finally came face to face with the man who killed his son.
Naturally, Joe was tied up, and Nicolai could get his shots in, but outside of that, the scene did not play out the way I thought it would.
There was much conversation between the two men, each lamenting their own fathers,...

A year ago, Joe and his friends were just a carefree bunch singing karaoke and minding their business. But as we saw in Average Joe‘s Season 1 finale, their lives have drastically changed since then.
Joe’s father stole $10 million from Russian mobsters before his death, propelling the titular character onto a haphazard journey to find the missing money. In Thursday’s season ender, ringleader Nicolai finally caught up with Joe and threatened to murder his daughter in front of him after Joe killed Nicolai’s son Dimitri.

I knew Leon Montgomery would come through when it mattered the most!
Leon and Joe were severely outnumbered when they approached Nicolai's cabin on Average Joe Season 1 Episode 9, and yet they found themselves with a significant leg up before it all went downhill.
One second, it looked like maybe they would pull off the impossible, but when it rains, it pours, and just like that, they got stuck in Nicolai's orbit, and the sociopathic mobster had the upper hand.
Not a single part of me was prepared for Leon to show up and show out the way he did, but he's always had it in him.
Leon gets put down a lot, to the point where it can feel like a running joke more than anything else, but it felt like he started to buy into it. And sure, he's had some bumbling moments, and maybe he wasn't as stone-cold as his friends,...

Now I know my eyes must have deceived me, and Joe and Leon weren't running up to Nicolai's cabin without any backup!
After getting the tipoff a lifetime (thanks to a newly sober Touch), Joe and Leon had Jennifer within their grasp during the final minutes of Average Joe Season 1 Episode 8, but they were severely outnumbered.
There's nothing like a father's love, though, and Joe couldn't stand being so close to getting Jennifer back and not doing anything about it.
Average Joe was clearly setting up for the final hours during this installment, another episode that took place over a day and saw a somewhat unlikely quintet form.
Bringing in Talford was kind of something that couldn't be avoided at this point because she knew enough, and playing dumb just wasn't an option anymore.
Joe did the right thing in asking for her help, and with Joe, Leon, Angela,...

Things just got a whole lot more interesting for Joe!
With Angela in enemy territory, the race was on to free her from Nicolai's grasp on Average Joe Season 1 Episode 7, but what should have been a pretty straightforward exchange went completely off the rails when Jennifer threw a curveball no one saw coming.
And no one will ever be the same.
Joe had about seven seconds to get excited about finding the money before his world crashed.
And it was worse than just discovering he only found 1/10th of the money!
Angela's kidnapping naturally threw him into scramble mode, and I felt for him in those moments he realized that Angela was missing. But he was heavily misplacing his anger, probably due to the sinking feeling of guilt pooling in his stomach.
Not every bad thing that happened can be placed at Joe's feet. Outside of Jennifer, all these people are grown,...
